RRSP Tax Savings Calculator

Enter your income, your planned RRSP contribution and your province to see the tax the deduction actually removes. The calculator recomputes your full federal and provincial tax with and without the contribution, so a contribution that spans a bracket edge is priced correctly. Rates are current for the 2025 tax year.

How it works. An RRSP contribution is a deduction: it comes off taxable income before the brackets apply, so the saving lands at your highest rates first. Instead of multiplying by a single marginal rate, this calculator runs the full federal and provincial calculation twice — once at your income, once at income minus the contribution — and reports the difference, surtaxes and abatements included.

2025 room accrues at 18% of 2024 earned income up to $32,490, plus anything carried forward — income at the level entered above generates roughly $0 of new room a year. Check your notice of assessment for your exact figure before contributing.

How RRSP Tax Savings Calculator Works

Contributing to an RRSP reduces taxable income dollar for dollar, so the refund arrives at your marginal rates — the highest rates your income reaches. A $10,000 contribution at a 30% combined rate returns about $3,000; the same contribution at 43% returns about $4,300. That is why the deduction is worth more in a high-income year, and why the calculator above recomputes your whole tax bill rather than assuming one flat rate: a large contribution can slide down through more than one bracket, and each slice saves at its own rate.

Contributing and deducting are also separable. A contribution made now can sit undeducted and be claimed in a later, higher-income year — the deduction carries forward indefinitely. For the 2025 tax year, contributions made up to March 2, 2026 (60 days into the new year) can still be deducted on the 2025 return.

What this calculator does not cover

It assumes you have the contribution room — room accrues at 18% of prior-year earned income up to the annual dollar limit, but pension adjustments from a workplace plan reduce it, and only your notice of assessment has the real number. Spousal RRSPs, which shift the eventual withdrawal tax to the lower-income spouse, are not modelled, and neither are over-contribution penalties: amounts more than $2,000 over your limit attract a 1% per month charge until withdrawn. To weigh this deduction against tax-free growth in a TFSA, run the RRSP vs TFSA calculator, or see our tax planning services for a contribution strategy built around your actual room and rates.

RRSP Tax Filing: Frequently Asked Questions

Your combined federal and provincial marginal rate, roughly — about $300 per $1,000 at a 30% rate, or $430 at 43%. The exact figure depends on your income and province, and drops if the contribution carries you down into a lower bracket, which is exactly what the calculator above measures by recomputing the full tax bill both ways.
New room for 2025 is 18% of your 2024 earned income, capped at $32,490. Unused room from earlier years carries forward on top of that, and pension adjustments from a workplace plan reduce it. The figure on your latest notice of assessment or in CRA My Account is the one that counts.
Yes. A contribution uses up room the moment it is made, but the deduction can be held back and claimed in any future year. That is worth doing when you expect a higher-income year ahead — the same contribution saves more when it is deducted against dollars taxed at a higher marginal rate.
Contributions made in the first 60 days of 2026 — up to March 2, 2026 — can still be deducted on your 2025 return. Anything after that counts toward 2026. The room itself does not expire, so missing the deadline only shifts which year the deduction lands in.
There is a lifetime $2,000 cushion above your limit that attracts no penalty (though it is not deductible). Beyond that, CRA charges 1% per month on the excess for every month it stays in the account, and you must file a T1-OVP return to report it. Withdrawing the excess promptly stops the charge.

Canadian income tax is built up in layers. You total your income for the year, subtract the deductions you qualify for to arrive at taxable income, then apply the federal brackets and your province's brackets to that figure. Each bracket rate applies only to the income sitting inside it, so earning more never retaxes the dollars below. Non-refundable credits, starting with the basic personal amount, come off the tax afterwards. Look up the CRA bracket table for the tax year you are filing.
Income up to the basic personal amount is effectively untaxed, because that credit offsets the federal tax on it, and each province and territory has its own equivalent amount. Both figures change every year with indexation, so look up the amount for the tax year in question. Other credits, such as the age amount, tuition, or the disability amount, lift the point where tax actually starts. Tax withheld at source below that point comes back as a refund.
Both federal and provincial tax apply, and the rates are graduated rather than flat. For 2026 the lowest federal bracket is taxed at 14%, and the federal basic personal amount of $16,452 shelters the first slice of income, so tax on $49,000 works out well below 14% of the whole amount. Your province adds its own bracket and credits, and CPP and EI also come off employment pay. Use the CRA's payroll deductions calculator.
Spousal support is deductible to the payer and taxable to the recipient when it is a periodic amount paid under a written separation agreement or court order, and both people report the same figure. Lump sum settlements, property division and legal fees to negotiate the arrangement generally do not qualify. Child support under most orders and agreements now in place is neither deductible nor taxable. Register the order with the CRA and keep every payment record.
Property tax is a municipal charge covering the calendar year, billed in instalments, often an interim bill early in the year and a final bill once council sets the rate. At closing, the statement of adjustments divides the year between seller and buyer, so you reimburse whatever the seller prepaid beyond your closing date. Buying does not itself reset your assessment, since assessed values come from the provincial assessment authority on its own cycle. Arrange your own bill or a lender-paid account right after closing.
Nothing comes back federally, because there is no federal deduction or credit for rent on your home. Some provinces do pay a benefit that takes rent into account, including Ontario, Manitoba and Quebec, and the amount turns on your income, family size, age and the rent actually paid in the year. You claim it on the provincial schedule attached to your return, so it is worth filing even in a year with little or no income.
