Nunavut levies no territorial sales tax, so only the 5% federal GST applies. Residents who live there for at least six consecutive months beginning or ending in the year can also claim the Zone A northern residents deduction. Nunavut levies a 2% payroll tax on employee remuneration, withheld from wages and remitted by the employer.

Paper returns go to the CRA tax centre that serves your province or territory of residence, not to one national address. The correct address is printed in the paper return package and listed on canada.ca under mailing addresses for individual returns, and it differs for non-residents and for business returns. Filing electronically is much faster: for the 2025 tax year the CRA aims to issue a refund on an online return in about two weeks, against a considerably longer standard on paper.
Download them from the forms and publications section of canada.ca, where current and prior-year federal and provincial forms sit as printable PDFs. During filing season paper packages are also stocked at some Canada Post and Service Canada outlets, and the CRA will post a package if you order one by phone. Filing software completes the same forms behind the scenes, so most people never need the printed version at all.
Canada taxes residents on their worldwide income for the calendar year, reported by the taxpayer on a T1 return. Employers and other payers withhold tax through the year, and the return reconciles what was withheld against what is owed, producing a refund or a balance to pay. Rates are progressive and layered, federal plus provincial. Deductions lower taxable income and credits lower the tax itself. The 2025 return was due 30 April 2026.
Alberta is generally the lowest-tax province: it charges no provincial sales tax and its provincial income tax rates sit at or near the bottom of the range. The highest combined personal rates are found in Quebec and the Atlantic provinces. Any comparison depends on more than headline rates, though. Sales tax, property tax, payroll levies, health premiums and the credits you qualify for all move the real burden, so compare your own total rather than the top bracket.
Start with the assessment, because the bill is assessed value times the municipal rate and only the assessment is open to challenge. Ask the provincial assessment authority to reconsider your value, and if that does not work appeal to the assessment appeal tribunal in your province by the deadline printed on your notice. Also check the rebate, exemption and deferral programmes your municipality runs, and confirm the property class and recorded features are correct.
No single figure describes it, because the total turns on income, province of residence, family situation and the credits claimed. A typical household pays federal and provincial income tax, Canada Pension Plan or Quebec Pension Plan and Employment Insurance contributions, GST or HST on most purchases, municipal property tax directly or through rent, plus fuel and excise taxes. Your own income tax for a year is set out on the notice of assessment the CRA issues.
CPP2 is a second contribution on higher earnings. For 2026 it is 4% from the employee and 4% from the employer on the slice of pensionable earnings between $74,600 and $85,000, so a maximum of $416 each. There is no basic exemption on that slice, and nothing is owed above $85,000. Payroll software applies it automatically once regular CPP contributions reach their ceiling.
No. TFSA withdrawals are not taxable and are not reported as income, however much the account has earned, and that is still true for 2026. The amount you take out is added back to your contribution room, but only on 1 January of the following year. Putting it back in the same calendar year without room to cover it creates an excess taxed at 1% per month. Withdrawals do not affect income-tested benefits.
Property tax is municipal. Your city, town or rural municipality sets the annual rate and issues the bill, inside a framework the province sets: provinces create municipalities, run the assessment bodies that value properties, and add the education or school-support levy that appears on the same bill. The federal government has no role in property tax at all, so neither the CRA nor your income tax return is where a property tax dispute is settled. The municipality is.
Only for specific purposes. Fees paid to collect or establish a right to salary, wages, a pension, severance or support amounts, and fees to object to or appeal a CRA assessment, are claimed in the deductions section of the T1, on the line the CRA's guide names. Legal costs of earning business or rental income belong on the T2125 or the rental statement. Fees to acquire property are usually added to its cost instead of deducted.
