Terms You'll Hear During Financial Services & Insurance Filing

T1 General
The personal income tax return individuals file with the CRA each year.
T2 Corporate Return
The corporate income tax return every incorporated Canadian business must file.
GST/HST Return
The sales-tax return businesses file to remit GST/HST collected, net of input tax credits.
Financial Services & Insurance: Our Analysis

Financial services sit in a GST/HST blind spot: most supplies are exempt, so input tax credits on rent, software and marketing are largely unrecoverable and pricing has to absorb the tax. Commission income arrives on T4A slips the CRA auto-matches, licensed advisors juggle corporation rules that differ by regulator, and fintechs straddle exempt financial services and taxable software — a classification question worth real money. We keep the classifications, the T2 and the payroll straight at a low-cost fixed fee.

An Income Tax Specialist's Notes on Financial Services & Insurance

There is a version of financial services & insurance accounting that treats the sector like any other business. It files on time and misses everything that matters. These notes are about the other version.

First, the rule that sorts straightforward files from complicated ones: The CRA expects the trial balance behind a T2 to reconcile to the GIFI schedules filed with it. A statement set that does not tie to the return is the first thing a reviewer notices.

That rule rarely travels alone; alongside it sits another: Compilation engagements follow CSRS 4200, which requires a basis-of-accounting note describing exactly how the statements were prepared. Lenders read that note, and an omitted one is the fastest way to have a financing package sent back.

We would rather earn the Financial Services & Insurance engagement than pitch it. So the structure removes your risk: the fixed fee is settled first, the review is yours before payment, and the sector experience shows up in the work itself.

Case Study 1

Reorganisation Completed Tax-Deferred, $46,000 Saved Each Year — Financial Planning Practice, Toronto

A financial planning practice in Toronto, Ontario had outgrown its structure. The visible cost was a previous accountant with no experience of this sector. The reorganisation completed tax-deferred and saves $46,000 a year.

A financial planning practice in Toronto, Ontario had outgrown the structure it started with. A previous accountant with no experience of this sector was the immediate problem. The longer-term one was that the structure blocked the next step. We mapped the current structure and modelled the target. Then we reassigned the asset classes on the CCA schedule and corrected the opening balances. The tax-deferred elections were filed on time and the supporting valuations documented. The reorganisation completed without triggering tax, and the new structure saves approximately $46,000 a year while removing the exposure the old one carried.

Case Study 2

Scaled To 61 Staff With $57,000 Of Working Capital Freed — Wealth Management Practice, Winnipeg

Growth at a wealth management practice in Winnipeg, Manitoba had outrun the back office. A chart of accounts that told the owner nothing about financial services & insurance margin broke first. Headcount reached 61 with $57,000 of cash freed.

A wealth management practice in Winnipeg, Manitoba was growing fast, with headcount reaching 61 in eighteen months. The back office had not kept up. A chart of accounts that told the owner nothing about financial services & insurance margin was the first thing to break. We documented the positions to the standard the CRA applies to this sector specifically. We built the compliance calendar for the size the business was becoming rather than the size it had been. The business reached 61 staff with no missed remittance and no late filing. $57,000 of working capital was freed in the process.

Case Study 3

$84,000 Of Penalties And Interest Cancelled On Relief — Private Lending Business, Burnaby

A private lending business in Burnaby, British Columbia was carrying $84,000 of penalties and interest. The charges arose from industry-specific reporting obligations nobody had flagged. A relief application cancelled that amount.

An assessment of $84,000 landed at a private lending business in Burnaby, British Columbia following a desk review. It turned on industry-specific reporting obligations nobody had flagged. The auditor had not seen the records behind it. We rebuilt the chart of accounts around how a financial services & insurance business actually earns and spends. We then set out the legislative basis for the position alongside the documents supporting it. $84,000 of penalties and interest was cancelled under the taxpayer relief provisions, and the underlying assessment was adjusted to match the filed position.

Case Study 4

$26,000 Reassessment Reduced To Nil On Review — Investment Advisory Firm, Windsor

A $26,000 reassessment was proposed against an investment advisory firm in Windsor, Ontario. It followed seasonal revenue reported without matching the costs that produced it. The documented response reduced it to nil.

A review notice arrived at an investment advisory firm in Windsor, Ontario, covering financial services & insurance accounting and tax for two tax years. The auditor's working position was an adjustment of $26,000. It was driven by seasonal revenue reported without matching the costs that produced it. Rather than negotiate, we rebuilt the record. We aligned the reporting calendar with the sector’s own seasonal cycle rather than a generic year-end. We then submitted a point-by-point response that answered each proposed adjustment with the document behind it. The auditor accepted the documented position and closed the review without adjustment, protecting $26,000 and leaving the prior filings undisturbed.

Case Study 5

5-Week Turnaround Beat The Deadline And Saved $33,500 — Insurance Brokerage, Calgary

A 5-week rebuild at an insurance brokerage in Calgary, Alberta got the filing in with 6 days to spare. That avoided $33,500 in penalties.

An insurance brokerage in Calgary, Alberta was weeks away from the deadline for financial services & insurance accounting and tax. Behind that sat sector deductions claimed on a general-business basis rather than the financial services & insurance rules. The exposure if the date slipped was around $33,500. We reviewed every sector-specific deduction against the current rules and claimed the ones that had been missed. The filing went in complete rather than provisional, so there was no amended return to follow. Filed with 6 days to spare. $33,500 in late-filing penalties avoided, and the working papers are ready for the following year.

Case Study 6

Incentive Review Recovered $127,000 Across 3 Open Years — Benefits Consultancy, Hamilton

An incentive review at a benefits consultancy in Hamilton, Ontario recovered $127,000 across 3 open years. It found provincial credits left unclaimed alongside every federal filing.

An incentive review at a benefits consultancy in Hamilton, Ontario started from a simple question: what has never been claimed? The answer ran to 3 years. It was driven by provincial credits left unclaimed alongside every federal filing. We reassigned the asset classes on the CCA schedule and corrected the opening balances. We documented eligibility to the standard a reviewer would apply rather than the standard a claim form requires. The credits produced $127,000 across the open years. The tracking now in place means the following year's claim is documented as the work happens rather than reconstructed afterwards.

Before You Call: Financial Services & Insurance FAQs

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does accounting for financial services & insurance businesses cost?

Corporate tax filing starts at $90 and bookkeeping at $10 per month, quoted as a fixed fee before work begins. Sector complexity does not trigger a surcharge. Review the full price list.

Do financial services & insurance businesses need to register for GST/HST?

Registration is mandatory once taxable revenue exceeds $30,000 over four consecutive quarters. Registering voluntarily below that threshold is often worthwhile, because it lets you recover input tax credits on startup and equipment purchases.

Should I incorporate my financial services & insurance business?

Incorporation usually pays off once profit consistently exceeds what you draw personally, because retained earnings are taxed at the small business rate rather than your marginal rate. Below that point the added compliance cost often outweighs the benefit. We model both before you decide.

What records do financial services & insurance businesses need to keep?

The CRA requires six years of books and records from the end of the tax year they relate to: invoices, receipts, bank statements, payroll records and contracts. Digital copies are acceptable provided they are legible and complete.

How do you handle payroll for financial services & insurance businesses?

We run the cycle, remit source deductions on schedule, and issue T4s ahead of the February deadline. Late remittances draw a penalty of up to 10% and repeat lateness raises it to 20%, so timing is the whole game. See our payroll service.

Can you work with my existing bookkeeping software?

Yes. We work in QuickBooks, Xero, Wave, Sage, spreadsheets, and plain scanned documents. You are not required to migrate systems to become a client, and we never charge a conversion fee.

What if my financial services & insurance business operates in more than one province?

Multi-province operations allocate taxable income by permanent establishment and payroll, and sales tax rules differ by jurisdiction. We handle the allocation schedules and the differing GST, HST, PST and QST obligations in one engagement.

When should a financial services & insurance business register for GST/HST?

Registration becomes mandatory once taxable supplies pass $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters, and the obligation starts almost immediately rather than at the next year-end. Registering voluntarily below that threshold is often worthwhile when you are buying equipment, because it makes the tax on those purchases recoverable.

When are tax returns due in Canada for Financial Services & Insurance businesses?

For corporations in the financial services & insurance sector, T2 tax filings are due within 6 months of the fiscal year-end. Personal returns for sole proprietors are due June 15, with balances payable by April 30.

What tax deductions are available for Financial Services & Insurance companies?

Common write-offs include operating expenses, inventory costs, technology software licenses, marketing, employee wages, home workspace allocation, and capital assets depreciation.

Why choose Tax Filings Canada for Financial Services & Insurance accounting?

We provide specialized bookkeeping, corporate compliance, and strategic planning with a 100% Satisfaction Guarantee and Pay After Service model.

What records should a financial services & insurance operation be keeping through the year?

Let us give you the substance first and the caveats second. Shareholder loan balances must be repaid within one year of the corporation’s following year-end. If they are not, the amount is included in the shareholder’s personal income under subsection 15(2). The caveat is simply that facts on your file can shift the outcome, so treat this as the baseline rather than the final word.

When should a financial services & insurance business bring in a specialist instead of a generalist?

An accounting firm answers this differently than a search engine, because the rule has edges. Accrued but unbilled revenue belongs in income in the year the work was performed. Deferring it to the invoice date understates taxable income and is a standard reassessment adjustment. Where your business sits relative to those edges is what we establish in the first meeting.

A T4E is the statement of Employment Insurance and other benefits. Service Canada issues one for each year in which EI was paid, covering regular, sickness, maternity, parental, caregiving or fishing benefits, and it shows the total received, the income tax already withheld and any amount to be repaid. Those figures go on the personal return for that year. Benefits paid under a different program come on their own slip.

Usually because the pay for that period is low enough that the basic personal amount covers it. Payroll annualises each cheque, so part-time or irregular hours can produce zero income tax while CPP and EI still come off. Other causes are a TD1 claiming large credits, a claim of exemption from withholding, or being paid as a contractor rather than an employee, in which case nothing is withheld and the tax is yours to set aside and remit.

Payroll treats each cheque as though you earned that amount every period, so a bonus, overtime, retroactive raise or an extra shift makes the cheque look like a higher annual income and more tax comes off it. A change in pay frequency, a new TD1, or a taxable benefit added mid-year does the same. CPP and EI stop for the year once their maximums are reached, so take-home often rises later on. Your return reconciles the total.

A write-off is an expense deducted from income so that tax applies to a smaller amount. It is not a refund of what you spent: the saving equals the expense multiplied by your marginal rate. Employees may deduct very little, while a business or self-employed person can deduct reasonable costs incurred to earn income, though categories such as meals and entertainment, vehicles and home office are restricted. Keep receipts, because the CRA can ask for them years later.

Start in My Account, My Business Account or Represent a Client, where balances, slips, returns, mail and secure messages already sit. For anything the portals cannot do, use the enquiries lines on the CRA's Contact the CRA page, which are toll-free within Canada, or write to the tax centre named on your notice. When the lines are busy the phone system sometimes offers an automated call-back instead of holding.

No. The fuel charge applies to fuels, not tobacco. Cigarettes carry federal excise duty, a provincial or territorial tobacco tax, and GST or HST on the shelf price, which is why tax makes up most of what you pay. Duty and tobacco tax rates move with budgets and some federal rates are adjusted annually, so check the CRA excise duty rates page and your province's tobacco tax page rather than an older figure.

Land transfer tax is provincial and is charged on the purchase price, usually on a graduated scale, so the cost depends on the province and the price. Buyers in Toronto pay a municipal land transfer tax on top of Ontario's. Alberta, Saskatchewan and the territories charge registration or transfer fees instead of a full tax. Several provinces offer first-time buyer rebates, and non-resident buyers can face extra tax. Use your province's own calculator before closing.

Several taxes stack on a litre: a federal excise tax on gasoline, a provincial fuel tax that varies by province, a local transit levy in some regions, any carbon levy that applies there, and GST or HST charged on the total, so sales tax is calculated on the other taxes as well. The share of the pump price that is tax therefore depends on your province and on the day's crude and refining costs. Each province publishes its own fuel tax rate.

Yes, indirectly. Provincial assessment authorities value a home from its characteristics, including lot size, living area, age, construction quality, bedrooms and bathrooms, and recent sales of comparable homes nearby. Your municipality then multiplies that assessed value by its rate. So a bigger lot or more finished square footage generally means a higher assessment and a higher bill, while bedroom count alone matters less than total area. Your assessment notice lists the details on record.

There is no set number of months. Property tax is handled as a closing adjustment: your lawyer prorates the year's tax to the closing date, so you reimburse the seller for any paid period falling after closing, or take a credit for tax the seller has left unpaid. Where the lender collects tax with the mortgage payment, it may also want an opening cushion. The statement of adjustments shows the exact amount for your deal.

Yes, in three separate layers. Federal excise duty is built into the price before the product reaches the shelf, each province or territory adds its own tobacco tax, and GST/HST then applies to the selling price including those taxes. The duty and the provincial tax are charged by quantity of product rather than as a percentage of price, which is why the shelf price differs so much between provinces.

Tax makes up a large share of the retail price, and the exact share depends on the province. Three layers stack: federal excise duty on the tobacco, a provincial tobacco tax, and then GST or HST charged on the selling price. Provinces change their tobacco tax with almost every budget, so take the figures from your province's tobacco tax page and the federal excise duty rate schedule rather than from a general article.
