GST/HST Registration: Our Analysis

Registration becomes mandatory once taxable supplies pass $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters. Because the fee is fixed and affordable, the economics stay predictable whether your file is simple or messy.

What We Notice Preparing GST/HST Registration Files

After years of preparing gst/hst registration files week in and week out, a tax filing specialist starts to see the same handful of decisions shape almost every outcome. These notes cover the ones that matter for GST/HST Registration.

If you remember one thing from this page, make it this: Registration is mandatory once taxable supplies pass $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters. Input tax credits require documentation that scales with invoice size. Unmatched input tax credits are the first thing disallowed in a sales-tax review, and the assessment covers every period reviewed.

Then comes the detail that separates a clean file from an expensive one: A sale of real property is taxable unless an exemption applies, and the vendor not being registered does not make it tax free. Where the purchaser is a registrant acquiring the property for use in a commercial activity, the tax is self-assessed by the purchaser on its own return instead of being paid to the vendor. The last of the major rules is about when, not what. Closely related registrants can elect under section 156 to treat supplies between them as made for nil consideration, but the election has to be filed with the CRA rather than signed and left in the minute book. An unfiled election means the inter-company charges were taxable all along.

The common thread in these rules is that they punish assumptions and reward verification. Engaging a tax filing specialist for gst/hst registration is, at bottom, a way of replacing assumptions with checked answers. Before the first meeting, it helps to pull together the records that let a tax filing specialist see your situation whole.

Every file we prepare is reviewed with you before anything is filed, the fee is fixed and agreed up front, and you pay only after the service is delivered. If gst/hst registration is on your list, the conversation costs nothing to start.

Questions GST/HST Registration Clients Ask, With Our Answers

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does GST/HST Registration cost in Canada?

GST/HST Registration starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for GST/HST Registration?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does GST/HST Registration take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We are a cloud-based practice serving every province and territory, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for GST/HST Registration?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes GST/HST Registration different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in GST/HST Registration services?

Our gst/hst registration services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with GST/HST Registration services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

What records do I need before starting gst/hst registration?

In our files, this is the deciding factor: Place-of-supply rules decide the rate: for most services it follows the customer’s address on file, so a supplier in a 5% GST province can owe 15% HST on a sale to Atlantic Canada. A tax services provider applies it to your numbers before submission.

How long does gst/hst registration usually take from start to finish?

The honest answer comes down to one rule. Input tax credits generally have a four-year claim window for smaller registrants, but the documentation the CRA requires scales with the invoice amount. That is the part we verify before anything is filed.

GST/HST Registration: The Questions People Search

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

No. Ontario folded its former retail sales tax into the harmonised sales tax, so a single HST replaces the old GST plus PST pair on most sales, and registered businesses charge it, remit it and claim input tax credits on their own purchases. A narrow provincial retail sales tax still applies in a few places, notably certain insurance premiums and benefit plans and private vehicle sales between individuals. Those are administered by Ontario rather than the CRA.

Tax exempt describes an amount or a transaction that tax does not apply to at all, which is different from a deduction or credit that merely reduces tax. Common examples are supplies that are exempt or zero-rated for GST/HST, investment income earned inside a TFSA, and specific receipts Parliament has excluded from income. Registered charities and non-profits can be exempt from income tax while still carrying filing duties. Exemption is never automatic; the rule must fit your facts.

The HST is a single sales tax blending the federal 5% GST with a participating province's own sales tax, collected and administered by the CRA. For 2026 it is 13% in Ontario, 14% in Nova Scotia since 1 April 2025, and 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island. A registrant charges HST on taxable supplies, claims input tax credits on its purchases, and remits the difference on one return. Elsewhere you charge the 5% GST plus any separate provincial tax.

Divide the total by one plus the tax rate, then subtract that result from the total to get the tax. In Ontario at 13% HST divide by 1.13; in Nova Scotia at 14% from 1 April 2025 divide by 1.14; where only 5% GST applies divide by 1.05. Quebec is layered, because QST of 9.975% applies to the pre-GST price, giving a combined 14.975%, so divide by 1.14975 to reach the pre-tax amount.

Yes. Realty tax, real property tax, real estate tax and municipal tax all describe the same annual charge your city or town levies on assessed property value. A bill often splits it into a municipal portion and an education or school portion, which is why wording differs between notices. It is not land transfer tax, which is a one-time charge on purchase, and not the federal Underused Housing Tax, which is a separate filing regime.

A tax preparer or adviser collects your slips and records, prepares and files the return, claims the deductions and credits you qualify for, and handles CRA questions or a review afterwards. Look for someone who works regularly in your situation, whether employment, self-employment, rental or cross-border, who quotes a fixed fee before starting and explains their reasoning. We agree the fee before any work begins, and you pay after the service.

HST is not a fee the business keeps. It is the harmonised sales tax, a combined federal and provincial sales tax the supplier collects on your behalf and remits to the CRA. On a bill it appears as a percentage of the pre-tax subtotal at the rate of the province of supply, 13% in Ontario. A registered supplier must show the tax, or state that it is included, and give their GST/HST registration number on request.

Taxation is a government collecting compulsory payments from people and businesses to fund public spending. In Canada that covers income tax on earnings and profits, GST/HST on most goods and services, payroll contributions, and property tax charged by municipalities. Doing your taxes means filing a return that reports your income and claims your deductions and credits, so the amounts already withheld at source or paid by instalment are settled against what you actually owe for the year.

Start with the proceeds of disposition, then subtract the adjusted cost base of the property and the costs of selling it. The result is your capital gain. Only part of that gain, set by the inclusion rate for the year, is added to taxable income and taxed at your marginal rate, so there is no separate capital gains rate to look up. Confirm the inclusion rate in effect for the year of sale and keep the records that support your adjusted cost base.

Sign in to CRA My Account and open the carryover amounts section, which lists unused amounts the CRA has on file, such as tuition, RRSP room, capital and non-capital losses, and donations carried forward. The same figures appear on your latest notice of assessment. Use the CRA's numbers rather than your software's, because a reassessment can change them. If a carryforward you expected is missing, the year it arose may need adjusting first.

Yes. The GST/HST credit is based on family net income, and a nil or very low income generally means the largest payment, not none. You must file a return to get it: the CRA cannot assess entitlement without one, and it is recalculated each July from the prior year's return. There are also age and family conditions to meet. Amounts and income thresholds are set out on the CRA's GST/HST credit page.

GST is the Goods and Services Tax, the federal value-added tax on most goods and services sold in Canada, charged at 5% for 2025 and 2026. Basic groceries, most residential rent and many health and education services are zero-rated or exempt. A registered business charges it, claims input tax credits for the GST it paid on purchases, and remits the difference. In the five harmonized provinces it is folded into the HST instead.
