The Language of Toronto Tax Filing, Explained

T1 General
The personal income tax return individuals file with the CRA each year.
T2 Corporate Return
The corporate income tax return every incorporated Canadian business must file.
GST/HST Return
The sales-tax return businesses file to remit GST/HST collected, net of input tax credits.
Toronto: Our Analysis

Toronto is the densest concentration of incorporated professional and financial businesses in Canada, and that shows up in two ways at filing time. First, an Ontario corporation files a single T2 with the CRA, which also administers Ontario corporate tax, so there is no separate provincial corporate return to chase. Second, the Ontario Annual Return is no longer filed with the T2 and must be submitted separately through the Ontario Business Registry, which is the single most common compliance item Toronto corporations forget after incorporating.

A Tax Preparation Specialist's Notes on Toronto

Some of our Toronto clients come to us after a reassessment; the rest come before. These practitioner's notes on the Ontario regime are written for the second group.

What must a Toronto business get right first? In our files, the answer is nearly always the same. Ontario uses a single 13% HST administered by the CRA, so you file one combined return rather than separate federal and provincial ones. Charge it correctly, track it separately, remit it on time — in that order.

On the corporate side, the provincial rate structure shapes year-end planning. Ontario applies a 3.2% small business rate on the first $500,000 of active business income, giving a 12.2% combined federal-provincial rate. That single point drives more Toronto conversations than any other.

Hiring in Toronto adds one more line to the payroll setup. Employer Health Tax (EHT) applies above a $1,000,000 annual payroll exemption for eligible employers.

Do any of Ontario Innovation Tax Credit, Ontario Made Manufacturing Investment Tax Credit, Ontario Regional Opportunities Investment Tax Credit touch your business? The honest answer: it depends entirely on your circumstances. What we can say from the files we see is that Ontario owners far more often skip the question than receive a no. Every Toronto file we prepare starts from that reality.

Because Toronto's economy leans on finance, professional services, manufacturing, technology and healthcare, the local filing season has a recognizable shape for an income tax specialist: the same sector-driven income types, the same deduction questions, the same provincial wrinkles, year after year.

Our model is simple: the same fixed fee everywhere in Canada, and review-then-pay. Where you live affects your return; it does not affect what you are charged. That single point drives more Toronto conversations than any other.

Corporate tax and accounting in Toronto

Toronto carries the densest concentration of incorporated businesses in Canada, from Bay Street financial firms to King West tech companies and a vast small-business base across Scarborough, North York and Etobicoke. That density brings scrutiny: the CRA's largest Ontario tax services office sits here, and high-revenue corporations see more reviews than the national average.

Ontario administers corporate income tax through the federal T2, so there is no separate provincial return, but two provincial obligations catch Toronto employers. The Employer Health Tax applies once Ontario payroll passes the exemption threshold, and WSIB coverage is mandatory for most industries. We reconcile both alongside your T2 so payroll, EHT and source deductions agree to the penny.

For Toronto's professional and financial corporations, the highest-value work is usually the salary-versus-dividend mix and managing passive investment income below the $50,000 threshold that grinds down the small business deduction.

Common Questions Before Starting Toronto Tax Filing Work

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does a tax accountant in Toronto cost?

Corporate tax filing starts at $90 and monthly bookkeeping at $10, the same fixed rates we charge nationally. Toronto businesses pay no location premium, and the quote is agreed before work starts. See the full pricing breakdown.

Do I need to meet my Toronto accountant in person?

No. Everything runs through a secure portal with e-signatures, so documents never travel by mail and nothing is lost in transit. Clients across Toronto complete an entire filing without a single in-person meeting, though calls are always available.

Which tax deadlines apply to Toronto businesses?

Corporate T2 returns are due six months after your fiscal year-end, with any balance owing payable within two or three months depending on your CCPC status. Personal T1 returns are due April 30, and June 15 for the self-employed. GST/HST depends on your filing frequency.

Can you handle both my corporate and personal returns?

Yes, and doing both together is where most of the planning value sits. Salary-versus-dividend mix, shareholder loans and RRSP room interact across the two returns, and treating them separately is how owners overpay. Explore all our services.

What if my books are behind by several years?

That is routine work for us. We rebuild the ledger year by year, file the outstanding returns in sequence, and where eligible apply to the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties and interest.

Are you taking on new clients in Toronto?

Yes, we are actively taking on new corporate and personal clients in Toronto, including mid-season transfers from another accountant. Transferring is straightforward and we request the prior files on your behalf.

What industries do you serve in Toronto?

Construction, healthcare and medical practices, restaurants, e-commerce, real estate, transportation, professional services, technology startups and registered non-profits. Each carries a distinct deduction profile. See our industry specialisms.

How do I switch to your firm from my current accountant?

Tell us who currently holds your files and we handle the professional handover, including requesting working papers and prior-year returns. There is no gap in your compliance and no awkward conversation required on your side.

What is the deadline for filing corporate taxes in Toronto?

In Toronto, corporate tax returns (T2) are due within six months of the corporation's fiscal year-end. If you owe tax, the balance must be paid within 2 or 3 months of the year-end.

How much do tax accountants in Toronto charge?

Our personal tax filing services in Toronto start from $25, and corporate tax returns start from $90, offered under our 100% Risk-Free price match guarantee.

Does your accounting firm handle CRA audits for clients in Toronto?

Yes! We provide direct CRA audit defense and representation services for businesses and individuals throughout Ontario and across Canada.

Where is your Toronto office located?

Our Toronto office is at 381 Front St W, Toronto, ON M5V 3R8. Documents can also be exchanged on secure cloud software and signed electronically, so a visit is never required to get your filing done.

What sales tax does a Toronto business charge?

Ontario uses a single 13% HST administered by the CRA, so you file one combined return rather than separate federal and provincial ones. It is the first thing we walk Toronto owners through.

What should a Toronto corporation expect at tax time?

Ontario applies a 3.2% small business rate on the first $500,000 of active business income, giving a 12.2% combined federal-provincial rate. That is the backdrop for every Toronto engagement we take on.

People Also Ask About Toronto

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

Most people pay through online or telephone banking, adding the CRA as a payee and choosing the exact account and year, such as a personal balance owing or an instalment. The alternatives are CRA My Payment with a debit card, pre-authorised debit scheduled in My Account, a credit card or e-transfer through a third-party provider that charges its own fee, or paying at your bank with a remittance voucher. For the 2025 tax year the balance was due 30 April 2026.

A refund is the tax already paid minus the tax actually owed. Add the income tax withheld on your slips to any instalments you paid, work out tax payable on your total income after deductions and credits, and the difference comes back if the first figure is larger. Large refunds usually trace to over-withholding on employment income, RRSP contributions, or credits transferred to you. Run the numbers through the CRA's or a commercial estimator before you file.

The Ontario HST rate is 13% for 2026, and it has been 13% since 1 July 2010. That single rate carries a 5% federal component and an 8% Ontario component, and the CRA collects and administers all of it. Place-of-supply rules decide which province's rate applies, so goods delivered in Ontario take 13% and a delivery into Nova Scotia takes 14%. Basic groceries are zero-rated at 0%, while exempt supplies such as most long-term residential rent carry no HST and no input tax recovery.

First Nations, Inuit and Métis individuals pay the same federal and provincial taxes as everyone else, with one narrow exception. Under the Indian Act, a registered status Indian is exempt on income situated on a reserve, judged by connecting factors such as where the work is performed and where the employer is based. Off-reserve employment income is taxable. Related rules can relieve GST/HST on goods delivered to a reserve. Métis and non-status individuals do not get the exemption.

The business number is the single identifier the CRA uses for your business, with a separate programme account opened under it for each obligation: GST/HST, payroll deductions, corporate income tax, import and export. Register through Business Registration Online, by phone or by mail, or receive one automatically when you incorporate federally. You need it before you can remit payroll or file GST/HST. Provincial registration is separate in some provinces, notably Quebec, where Revenu Québec administers its own accounts.

If you are incorporated, you can take salary, dividends, or a mix of both. Salary is deductible to the corporation, builds RRSP room and CPP entitlement, and requires payroll registration and regular remittances. Dividends need no payroll but come out of after-tax corporate income and create no RRSP room. Sole proprietors and partners simply draw money and pay tax on the business profit. The right mix depends on your cash needs and the corporation's tax position, so model both.

A deposit labelled Canada Pro in Ontario is normally the Ontario Trillium Benefit, which bundles the Ontario energy and property tax credit, the Northern Ontario energy credit and the Ontario sales tax credit. One labelled Canada FED is a federal payment such as the GST/HST credit or the Canada workers benefit. Both are calculated from your filed T1, so file every year even with no income. Sign in to CRA My Account to see exactly what was paid and why.

No. A refund happens only when the tax withheld on your slips plus any instalments you paid exceed the tax you actually owe for the year. Employees often see refunds because payroll withholding ignores claims like RRSP contributions, tuition or medical expenses. People with self-employment, investment or several pension incomes frequently owe instead, because little or nothing was withheld. Filing settles the difference either way, and it is also what keeps benefit payments flowing.

Take-out and delivered prepared food is taxable in Ontario, so 13% HST normally applies. Ontario's point-of-sale rebate removes the provincial part on qualifying prepared food and beverages sold under a set dollar limit, leaving only the 5% federal part, which is why a small coffee-and-muffin order can show less tax than a large one. Basic groceries you take home, such as bread, milk and produce, are zero-rated and carry no GST/HST at all.

A ratepayer is someone who pays municipal rates, meaning property taxes and local utility charges, on property they own or occupy. The municipality sets a rate against assessed value, bills the ratepayer, and funds local services from what it collects; ratepayer associations speak for owners in an area. Property tax is municipal and quite separate from income tax, though on a rental or business property it is generally deductible against that income.

Often yes. Filing is required when you owe tax, but also when the CRA asks you to file, when you disposed of capital property, when benefits have to be repaid, and in several other situations. Even where no rule forces you, filing is how credits such as the GST/HST credit and the Canada child benefit are calculated, and how RRSP room is created. For the 2025 tax year the personal deadline was 30 April 2026.

Automobile insurance premiums in Ontario carry no HST, because insurance is treated as an exempt financial service for GST/HST purposes. Ontario also applies a provincial retail sales tax to certain insurance premiums, but automobile insurance is not one of them, so the premium the insurer quotes is the amount you pay. Group life and health benefit premiums are treated differently, so read the invoice wording carefully on those.
