T1 General

T1 Personal Income Tax Return: Our Analysis

The T1 General bundles federal and provincial tax in one filing, and missing the April 30 deadline costs 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per full month late. CRA interest on unpaid balances compounds daily at the prescribed rate plus 4%, which is why filing on time matters even when you cannot pay yet. We quote t1 personal income tax return as one low-cost fixed price — the budget-friendly alternative to hourly billing.

What a Tax Practitioner Checks First in T1 Personal Income Tax Return

These notes are written the way a tax practitioner would explain T1 Personal Income Tax Return across a desk: no theory, just the points that decide real files.

Start with the rule that decides most files: T1 returns are due April 30, and June 15 for the self-employed — but any balance owing is due April 30 regardless, with interest compounding daily from that date. The June deadline misleads a great many self-employed filers into paying two months late without realising it.

The second point is quieter but costs more when missed. A disposition of a principal residence has to be reported and the designation made, even where the entire gain is exempt. The exemption is not lost by silence, but a late designation carries its own penalty. The CRA now has the sale data from other sources. One more rule deserves attention, mostly because ignoring it is expensive in ways that only show up later. Charitable donations can be carried forward for up to five years and claimed by either spouse. The credit rate steps up above the first $200 of total gifts in a year. Small receipts claimed one year at a time sit in the low tier every time.

None of this is exotic — but each point has to be applied to your facts, which is exactly what you are paying a tax advisor to do. Every t1 personal income tax return file rests on documentation, so start by collecting.

Start whenever suits you; the structure is already set. You will know the fixed fee before work begins, approve the file before it is filed, and pay only once the service is delivered.

Case Study 1

Filed On Time From A Standing Start, $123,000 Penalty Avoided — US-Dividend Investor, Brampton

A taxpayer with US-source dividends in Brampton, Ontario was 8 weeks from a deadline. The file also carried RRSP room accumulated over eight years and never used in a high-income year. Filing complete and on time avoided roughly $123,000 in penalties.

A taxpayer with US-source dividends in Brampton, Ontario came to us 8 weeks before its filing deadline. The file came with RRSP room accumulated over eight years and never used in a high-income year. A late filing would have triggered a penalty of roughly $123,000 before interest. We worked backwards from the deadline. We filed the outstanding T1135 disclosures under the voluntary disclosure route before the CRA raised them. We prioritised the items that actually gated the filing and deferred everything that did not. The return was filed on time and complete. The $123,000 penalty never arose, and the compliance calendar we set means the next deadline is scheduled rather than discovered.

Case Study 2

Notice Of Objection Allowed In Full, $45,000 Reversed — Disability Amount Claimant, Lethbridge

A $45,000 reassessment landed at a taxpayer claiming a dependant's transferred disability amount in Lethbridge, Alberta. It rested on foreign accounts that had crossed the T1135 threshold two years earlier. The objection was allowed in full.

A taxpayer claiming a dependant's transferred disability amount in Lethbridge, Alberta had been reassessed for $45,000. 6 days were left on the objection deadline. The reassessment rested on foreign accounts that had crossed the T1135 threshold two years earlier. We filed the objection inside the deadline with a complete submission rather than a placeholder. Alongside it, we obtained the signed T2200 and rebuilt the employment-expense claim on the prescribed form with the supporting records attached to the file. The appeals officer allowed the objection in full. $45,000 was reversed and the account returned to a nil balance.

Case Study 3

$78,000 Credit Claim Filed And Accepted Without Adjustment — Mid-Year Interprovincial Mover, Halifax

An employee who moved provinces mid-year in Halifax, Nova Scotia had never tested its work against the eligibility rules. The resulting $78,000 claim was accepted without adjustment.

An employee who moved provinces mid-year in Halifax, Nova Scotia assumed the credits did not apply to a business its size. Medical expenses claimed on a calendar-year basis when a shifted window was worth far more meant they had applied all along. We identified the qualifying activity and built the documentation to support it. Then we reset the medical expense claim window, transferred credits between spouses, and applied the tuition and disability amounts to the return that used them. $78,000 recovered. Because the eligibility analysis is on file, the same claim can be repeated each year with a fraction of the effort.

Case Study 4

Audit Defence Closed In 9 Weeks, $53,000 Cleared — Two-Income Landlord Household, Moncton

A two-income household with rental property in Moncton, New Brunswick was under review. The issue was years of small donation receipts claimed one at a time instead of pooled onto a single return. The file closed in 9 weeks with $53,000 of proposed tax cleared.

A two-income household with rental property in Moncton, New Brunswick was selected for review. Years of small donation receipts claimed one at a time instead of pooled onto a single return had shown up in the CRA's automated matching. The proposed adjustment on T1 personal income tax return came to $53,000. We reported the disposition and filed the principal residence designation for the year of sale, closing the late-designation exposure before the CRA raised it. Every figure in the response traced to a source record the auditor could verify without asking a second question. The review closed with no change. $53,000 of proposed tax came off the table, and the documentation now in place makes the next review a short one.

Case Study 5

Month-End Close Cut From 12 Weeks To 10 Days — Recently Separated Taxpayer, Ottawa

Closing the books at a recently separated taxpayer in Ottawa, Ontario took 12 weeks. The cause was employment expenses claimed with no signed T2200 from the employer to support them. It now takes 10 days.

The accounting file at a recently separated taxpayer in Ottawa, Ontario had a weak foundation. It was built on employment expenses claimed with no signed T2200 from the employer to support them. The year-end had taken 12 weeks each of the last three years. We recalculated the instalments on the current year’s expected income rather than the prior year’s, which stopped the instalment interest from growing. We also moved the reconciliations into the monthly cycle, so the year-end stopped being a rebuild. The file reconciles. Month-end closes in 10 days instead of 12 weeks, and the year-end is a review rather than a reconstruction.

Case Study 6

Remuneration Review Saved $18,500 Across Corporate And Personal Returns — First-Time Home Buyer, Kitchener

A remuneration review at a first-time home buyer in Kitchener, Ontario saved $18,500 across the corporate and personal returns. It found three years of returns filed without the slips that had been mailed to an old address.

Nothing was wrong at a first-time home buyer in Kitchener, Ontario. The filings were on time and accurate. What they were not was planned. Three years of returns filed without the slips that had been mailed to an old address had never been reviewed. We carried the capital loss back against gains reported in the prior three years and generated a refund rather than a carry-forward balance. We ran the numbers across both the corporate and personal returns, so the saving was real rather than deferred into someone else's hands. $18,500 came off the combined corporate and personal tax bill, and the structure holds for future years without further work.

Before You Call: T1 Personal Income Tax Return FAQs

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does T1 Personal Income Tax Return cost in Canada?

T1 Personal Income Tax Return starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for T1 Personal Income Tax Return?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does T1 Personal Income Tax Return take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We serve clients in every province and territory at the same fixed fees, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for T1 Personal Income Tax Return?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes T1 Personal Income Tax Return different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in T1 Personal Income Tax Return services?

Our t1 personal income tax return services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with T1 Personal Income Tax Return services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

What records do I need before starting t1 personal income tax return?

The honest answer comes down to one rule. A disposition of a principal residence has to be reported and the designation made, even where the entire gain is exempt. The exemption is not lost by silence, but a late designation carries its own penalty. The CRA now has the sale data from other sources. That is the part we verify before anything is filed.

What goes wrong most often with t1 personal income tax return?

Our answer starts where the legislation starts. Charitable donations can be carried forward for up to five years and claimed by either spouse. The credit rate steps up above the first $200 of total gifts in a year. Small receipts claimed one year at a time sit in the low tier every time. From there it is a matter of applying it to your year — and that application, not the rule itself, is where an accounting firm earns the fee.

Searched Questions About T1 Personal Income Tax Return

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

For the 2025 tax year the filing and payment deadline is 30 April 2026. If you or your spouse were self-employed, the filing deadline moves to 15 June 2026, but any balance owing is still due 30 April 2026. Interest starts the day after the payment deadline, and a late-filing penalty applies on top when a return with a balance owing is filed late. File on time even with nothing owing, because income-tested benefits are recalculated from the filed return.

For the 2025 tax year the filing and payment deadline is 30 April 2026. If you or your spouse carried on a business, the return itself is due 15 June 2026, but any balance owing is still due 30 April 2026. Interest runs on unpaid amounts after the payment deadline, and a late-filed return with a balance owing also attracts a late-filing penalty. Filing on time keeps benefit and credit payments flowing.

A refund is the tax already paid minus the tax actually owed. Add the income tax withheld on your slips to any instalments you paid, work out tax payable on your total income after deductions and credits, and the difference comes back if the first figure is larger. Large refunds usually trace to over-withholding on employment income, RRSP contributions, or credits transferred to you. Run the numbers through the CRA's or a commercial estimator before you file.

If you owe nothing, no penalty applies, but a refund and benefit payments such as the Canada child benefit and the GST/HST credit are held up until the return is processed. If you owe, a late-filing penalty is charged and interest runs on the balance and compounds daily from the day after the due date. For the 2025 tax year the deadline was 30 April 2026. File even if you cannot pay, because the penalty is driven by filing, not payment.

Pay through your bank's online banking by adding the CRA as a payee and choosing the right account and year, through My Payment with a debit card, by pre-authorised debit scheduled in My Account, by credit card through a third-party provider that charges its own fee, or at a bank counter with a remittance voucher. For 2025 personal returns the payment deadline was 30 April 2026, including for the self-employed, and interest runs daily on anything unpaid after that.

A non-refundable credit reduces the tax you owe to zero but no further, so any unused part is lost, carried forward, or transferred to a spouse or parent where the rule allows it. A refundable credit is paid to you even when no tax is owed, which is how benefit-style payments reach people with little or no income. Most personal credits on the federal return, including the basic personal amount, are non-refundable.

Claim eligible child care costs as a deduction on the child care expenses form filed with your T1 return. You need a receipt from each provider showing the amount paid, which child it was for and the period covered; a receipt from an individual, including someone caring for the child in their own home, must also show their social insurance number. Generally the spouse or partner with the lower net income makes the claim, so decide that before either return is filed.

The CRA mails an income tax package to people who filed on paper the year before, usually in February. Anyone else can order one online or by phone, or download and print the forms. Filing online is faster: a refund on an electronically filed return usually arrives in about two weeks. Slips such as T4 and T5 come from your employer or financial institution, not from the CRA, though filed copies show in CRA My Account.

A write-off is an expense deducted from income so that tax applies to a smaller amount. It is not a refund of what you spent: the saving equals the expense multiplied by your marginal rate. Employees may deduct very little, while a business or self-employed person can deduct reasonable costs incurred to earn income, though categories such as meals and entertainment, vehicles and home office are restricted. Keep receipts, because the CRA can ask for them years later.

Yes. Rent received is taxable and goes on your T1 for the year, supported by a statement of rental revenue and expenses. Report the gross rent, then deduct the costs of earning it: mortgage interest, property tax, insurance, utilities you pay, repairs, condo fees, management and advertising. Capital cost allowance on the building is optional and often skipped. Report gross rent and expenses separately, not just the profit, and keep records six years.

A lump sum severance is employment income in the year it is received. The payer applies a flat lump-sum withholding rate that steps up with the size of the payment, and Quebec residents have separate provincial withholding. The amount is then added to your other income on the return and taxed at your marginal rate, so the withholding is often short and leaves a balance owing. Using available RRSP room, or an eligible retiring allowance transfer, can soften that.

The address depends on where you live and on what you are sending, because the CRA splits the work across several tax centres. The current one is printed in the paper return package and listed on canada.ca under where to mail your return, and any letter from the CRA shows the centre holding your file. Reply to the address on that letter. Filing online removes the question and shortens the assessment time.
