Moncton: Our Analysis

New Brunswick is harmonized at 15% HST, so Moncton businesses file one sales-tax return with the CRA. Moncton's position as a distribution and contact-centre hub for Atlantic Canada creates a specific issue: businesses shipping into other provinces must charge the destination province's rate, so a single Moncton company may be charging 15% locally and 5% into Alberta on the same day. Getting place-of-supply rules right is the most common HST correction we make for Moncton distributors.

Moncton: Notes From Our Practice

If you run a business in Moncton, your filings answer to both the federal rules and New Brunswick's own. The notes below walk through the provincial half — the part owners most often learn about the hard way.

What must a Moncton business get right first? In our files, the answer is nearly always the same. New Brunswick uses a single 15% HST administered by the CRA, filed on one combined return. Charge it correctly, track it separately, remit it on time — in that order.

If you incorporate in New Brunswick, this is the fact to keep taped above the desk. New Brunswick applies a 2.5% small business rate, producing an 11.5% combined rate. It quietly directs the remuneration mix, purchase timing, and retained-earnings decisions that make up real year-end planning. We build every Moncton engagement around that fact.

On payroll, New Brunswick has its own levy to plan for. New Brunswick levies no employer health tax. Moncton clients feel this one directly on the first return we file together.

Provincial programs rarely announce themselves; you claim them or you don't. In New Brunswick, the ones worth putting on the review agenda include New Brunswick Small Business Investor Tax Credit, New Brunswick Research and Development Tax Credit — a short conversation with a tax advisor settles whether any are relevant to your year. For a Moncton business, that is the ground floor of the filing.

The Moncton roster a tax specialist carries reads like the local economy: forestry, energy, food processing, information technology and logistics. That concentration is useful — it means the judgment calls on your file have been made many times before, on files that look like yours.

We serve Moncton at the same fixed fee as everywhere else in Canada, with no location premium, and you pay only after your filing is done.

Corporate tax and accounting in Moncton

Moncton is Atlantic Canada's transportation and distribution hub, with strong logistics, contact-centre, retail and cross-border activity given its position near the Nova Scotia and US markets. That trade orientation shapes its tax profile.

New Brunswick applies a single 15% HST under the place-of-supply rules, so a Moncton business serving customers in several provinces must charge each customer's provincial rate rather than its own. Contractors and service firms working across the nearby US border face the additional question of dual reporting: without treaty coordination and foreign tax credits, the same income can be taxed on both sides.

New Brunswick administers corporate income tax through the federal T2, so there is no separate provincial return. We apply place-of-supply HST correctly, structure any cross-border filing to eliminate double taxation, and reconcile it all with your corporate return.

Frequently Asked Questions on Moncton Tax Filing

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does a tax accountant in Moncton cost?

Corporate tax filing starts at $90 and monthly bookkeeping at $10, the same fixed rates we charge nationally. Moncton businesses pay no location premium, and the quote is agreed before work starts. See the full pricing breakdown.

Do I need to meet my Moncton accountant in person?

No. Everything runs through a secure portal with e-signatures, so documents never travel by mail and nothing is lost in transit. Clients across Moncton complete an entire filing without a single in-person meeting, though calls are always available.

Which tax deadlines apply to Moncton businesses?

Corporate T2 returns are due six months after your fiscal year-end, with any balance owing payable within two or three months depending on your CCPC status. Personal T1 returns are due April 30, and June 15 for the self-employed. GST/HST depends on your filing frequency.

Can you handle both my corporate and personal returns?

Yes, and doing both together is where most of the planning value sits. Salary-versus-dividend mix, shareholder loans and RRSP room interact across the two returns, and treating them separately is how owners overpay. Explore all our services.

What if my books are behind by several years?

That is routine work for us. We rebuild the ledger year by year, file the outstanding returns in sequence, and where eligible apply to the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties and interest.

Are you taking on new clients in Moncton?

Yes, we are actively taking on new corporate and personal clients in Moncton, including mid-season transfers from another accountant. Transferring is straightforward and we request the prior files on your behalf.

What industries do you serve in Moncton?

Construction, healthcare and medical practices, restaurants, e-commerce, real estate, transportation, professional services, technology startups and registered non-profits. Each carries a distinct deduction profile. See our industry specialisms.

How do I switch to your firm from my current accountant?

Tell us who currently holds your files and we handle the professional handover, including requesting working papers and prior-year returns. There is no gap in your compliance and no awkward conversation required on your side.

What is the deadline for filing corporate taxes in Moncton?

In Moncton, corporate tax returns (T2) are due within six months of the corporation's fiscal year-end. If you owe tax, the balance must be paid within 2 or 3 months of the year-end.

How much do tax accountants in Moncton charge?

Our personal tax filing services in Moncton start from $25, and corporate tax returns start from $90, offered under our 100% Risk-Free price match guarantee.

Does your accounting firm handle CRA audits for clients in Moncton?

Yes! We provide direct CRA audit defense and representation services for businesses and individuals throughout New Brunswick and across Canada.

Where is your Moncton office located?

Our Moncton office is at 860 Main St, Moncton, NB E1C 1G2. Documents can also be exchanged on secure cloud software and signed electronically, so a visit is never required to get your filing done.

Which sales-tax return does a Moncton business file?

New Brunswick uses a single 15% HST administered by the CRA, filed on one combined return. It shapes how we scope every Moncton file.

What does New Brunswick’s corporate rate structure mean for a Moncton company?

New Brunswick applies a 2.5% small business rate, producing an 11.5% combined rate. That single point drives more Moncton conversations than any other.

Commonly Searched Moncton Questions

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

CRA online filing for 2025 returns opened 23 February 2026 and closes 29 January 2027. Most people file between late February and the 30 April 2026 deadline, and that stretch is what tax season refers to. You can gather documents and prepare a return earlier, but it cannot be sent electronically before the system opens. Employment and investment slips such as T4 and T5 are issued by payers early in the year, and the CRA's Auto-fill service can pull the ones it already holds once you have set up My Account.

CRA online filing for 2025 returns opened on 23 February 2026 and stays open until 29 January 2027. You can prepare a return before the service opens, but it cannot be transmitted, and slips such as T4s and T5s often arrive only in late February. Filing early makes sense if you expect a refund. If you expect a balance owing, you can still file early and pay by 30 April 2026.

As the rules stand for the 2025 tax year filed in 2026, the late-filing penalty is 5% of the balance owing plus 1% of that balance for each full month the return is late, to a maximum of 12 months, so 17% at worst. It rises to 10% plus 2% per month for up to 20 months, a 50% maximum, but only where the CRA formally demanded the return and had already charged a late-filing penalty for any of the three preceding tax years. Interest compounds daily.

Sign in to CRA My Account and open the tax returns section, which lists your assessed returns, notices of assessment and reassessment, and carry-forward amounts for earlier years. You can also download a proof of income statement, request a copy by phone, or ask whoever prepared the return for you. Keep your own copy and the supporting records for six years from the end of the tax year they relate to.

Sign in to My Account and open the sections for filed returns and notices, where past returns, notices of assessment, slips and carry-forward amounts can be viewed, printed or saved. Without online access, ask the CRA by phone or in writing at the tax centre shown on your notice, or ask whoever prepared the return for their copy. Keep your own records six years from the end of the last tax year they relate to.

A tax specialist prepares and files returns, works out how the rules apply to your particular facts, and deals with the CRA on reviews, audits and objections. On the planning side that covers timing income, choosing between salary and dividends, structuring a sale of a business, or correcting a filed year through an adjustment request. Fees vary with complexity, so get the price in writing before work starts and confirm whether CRA follow-up is included.

Several receipts fall outside income entirely: lottery and casual gambling winnings, GST/HST credit and Canada child benefit payments, most gifts and inheritances, life insurance death benefits, growth and withdrawals inside a TFSA, and the gain on a home that qualifies as your principal residence. Strike pay and most personal injury damages are also excluded. Nearly everything else is taxable, including tips, side income and crypto gains. The CRA publishes a list of amounts that are not taxed.

Sign in to CRA My Account and check the uncashed cheques list, your balance, and whether any returns are still outstanding, since a refund is only issued once a return is assessed. Missing returns also stop benefit and credit payments. An old CRA cheque never expires; you ask for it to be reissued. Forgotten bank, insurance or pension balances sit with provincial unclaimed-property registries rather than the CRA, so check those separately.

The Canada child benefit follows whoever is primarily responsible for the child's daily care, so the change is made by updating that with the CRA, not by signing the benefit over. The parent who should receive it applies for child benefits and both parents confirm the date care changed; the CRA may ask for supporting letters. Where custody is shared roughly equally, the CRA splits the payments. Provincial and territorial amounts follow the same determination.

Yes. Once eligibility is established the CRA pays the Canada child benefit retroactively, so a late application or a return filed years behind can produce a lump-sum catch-up, though retroactive periods reach back only so far and the oldest months need a written request for relief. Entitlement is recalculated each July from the prior year's returns, and both parents must file for payments to continue. The benefit itself is not taxable, but any overpayment is recovered from future payments.

Yes, in more than one way. Municipalities charge annual property tax on land and any buildings on it, based on assessed value. Selling land can trigger tax on the gain, with one-half of a capital gain included in income for 2025 and 2026, or full business income if you were effectively trading in land. GST/HST often applies when a business sells vacant land, while a sale of personal-use land by an individual is frequently exempt. Provincial land transfer tax normally falls on the buyer.

Start with the notice itself and match each line to your slips, to confirm the error is the CRA's and not a slip you missed. Straightforward corrections can be handled by phone or through change my return in My Account. If you disagree with the assessment itself, file a notice of objection by the deadline printed on the notice. Service problems, such as wrong information or long delays, go to the CRA's service feedback process instead.
