Decoding Halifax Tax Filing Jargon

T1 General

GST/HST Return
The sales-tax return businesses file to remit GST/HST collected, net of input tax credits.
Halifax: Our Analysis

Nova Scotia is a harmonized province, so Halifax businesses file a single 15% HST return with the CRA rather than separate federal and provincial sales taxes. The higher rate changes cash flow more than most owners expect: on the same invoice, a Halifax business collects and remits materially more sales tax than an Alberta counterpart, so HST set-aside discipline matters. Halifax's ocean, defence and university-linked economy also produces a high share of research contracts, where SR&ED eligibility is frequently missed.

Working Notes From Our Halifax Files

What actually changes when your business is in Halifax? Mostly the provincial layer — and it is worth getting right.

Before payroll, before year-end, before anything with a deadline attached: sort out sales tax. Nova Scotia reduced its HST from 15% to 14% effective 1 April 2025, so returns spanning that date require careful rate splitting. We treat this as the entry ticket for doing business in Halifax.

What does incorporating actually change here? The provincial half of the answer: Nova Scotia applies a 1.5% small business rate, giving a 10.5% combined rate on the first $500,000. We revisit it with every Halifax client before their fiscal year closes, because the right moves have to happen before the year-end date, not after.

Hiring in Halifax adds one more line to the payroll setup. Nova Scotia levies no employer health tax.

A complete Nova Scotia filing review looks past what you owe to what you might have missed. That means holding your year up against programs such as Nova Scotia Innovation Equity Tax Credit, Nova Scotia Digital Media Tax Credit, Nova Scotia Capital Investment Tax Credit — no assumptions about eligibility, just the discipline of actually checking. We build every Halifax engagement around that fact.

Halifax's business mix runs through ocean industries, tourism, agriculture, defence and financial services, and each of those sectors files differently. A tax professional working locally learns those patterns quickly, because they arrive in the inbox every week.

Our model is simple: the same fixed fee everywhere in Canada, and review-then-pay. Where you live affects your return; it does not affect what you are charged. It is usually the first correction we make on a new Halifax file.

Corporate tax and accounting in Halifax

Halifax anchors Atlantic Canada's economy, combining shipping and the port, defence, financial services, healthcare and a growing technology sector. Nova Scotia is a harmonised province, so sales tax is simpler, but the place-of-supply rules still catch businesses that serve clients across provinces.

Nova Scotia applies a single 15% HST, but the rate you charge follows the customer's location, not yours. A Halifax firm billing clients across the Atlantic provinces and beyond must apply the place-of-supply rules, charging the destination province's rate rather than its own. Under-collecting on one province and over-collecting on another is a common error that surfaces in a CRA review.

Nova Scotia administers corporate income tax through the federal T2, so there is no separate provincial return. We apply the place-of-supply rules correctly across your invoices and reconcile HST with your corporate filing.

Answers to Frequent Halifax Tax Filing Questions

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does a tax accountant in Halifax cost?

Corporate tax filing starts at $90 and monthly bookkeeping at $10, the same fixed rates we charge nationally. Halifax businesses pay no location premium, and the quote is agreed before work starts. See the full pricing breakdown.

Do I need to meet my Halifax accountant in person?

No. Everything runs through a secure portal with e-signatures, so documents never travel by mail and nothing is lost in transit. Clients across Halifax complete an entire filing without a single in-person meeting, though calls are always available.

Which tax deadlines apply to Halifax businesses?

Corporate T2 returns are due six months after your fiscal year-end, with any balance owing payable within two or three months depending on your CCPC status. Personal T1 returns are due April 30, and June 15 for the self-employed. GST/HST depends on your filing frequency.

Can you handle both my corporate and personal returns?

Yes, and doing both together is where most of the planning value sits. Salary-versus-dividend mix, shareholder loans and RRSP room interact across the two returns, and treating them separately is how owners overpay. Explore all our services.

What if my books are behind by several years?

That is routine work for us. We rebuild the ledger year by year, file the outstanding returns in sequence, and where eligible apply to the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties and interest.

Are you taking on new clients in Halifax?

Yes, we are actively taking on new corporate and personal clients in Halifax, including mid-season transfers from another accountant. Transferring is straightforward and we request the prior files on your behalf.

What industries do you serve in Halifax?

Construction, healthcare and medical practices, restaurants, e-commerce, real estate, transportation, professional services, technology startups and registered non-profits. Each carries a distinct deduction profile. See our industry specialisms.

How do I switch to your firm from my current accountant?

Tell us who currently holds your files and we handle the professional handover, including requesting working papers and prior-year returns. There is no gap in your compliance and no awkward conversation required on your side.

What is the deadline for filing corporate taxes in Halifax?

In Halifax, corporate tax returns (T2) are due within six months of the corporation's fiscal year-end. If you owe tax, the balance must be paid within 2 or 3 months of the year-end.

How much do tax accountants in Halifax charge?

Our personal tax filing services in Halifax start from $25, and corporate tax returns start from $90, offered under our 100% Risk-Free price match guarantee.

Does your accounting firm handle CRA audits for clients in Halifax?

Yes! We provide direct CRA audit defense and representation services for businesses and individuals throughout Nova Scotia and across Canada.

Where is your Halifax office located?

Our Halifax office is at 1801 Hollis St, Halifax, NS B3J 3N4. Documents can also be exchanged on secure cloud software and signed electronically, so a visit is never required to get your filing done.

How does sales tax work for businesses in Halifax?

Nova Scotia reduced its HST from 15% to 14% effective 1 April 2025, so returns spanning that date require careful rate splitting. It is the first thing we walk Halifax owners through.

What corporate tax rates apply to a Halifax corporation?

Nova Scotia applies a 1.5% small business rate, giving a 10.5% combined rate on the first $500,000. That is the backdrop for every Halifax engagement we take on.

More Halifax Questions Canadians Ask

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

For the 2025 tax year the filing and payment deadline is 30 April 2026. If you or your spouse were self-employed, the filing deadline moves to 15 June 2026, but any balance owing is still due 30 April 2026. Interest starts the day after the payment deadline, and a late-filing penalty applies on top when a return with a balance owing is filed late. File on time even with nothing owing, because income-tested benefits are recalculated from the filed return.

For the 2025 tax year the filing and payment deadline is 30 April 2026. If you or your spouse carried on a business, the return itself is due 15 June 2026, but any balance owing is still due 30 April 2026. Interest runs on unpaid amounts after the payment deadline, and a late-filed return with a balance owing also attracts a late-filing penalty. Filing on time keeps benefit and credit payments flowing.

Online banking is the simplest route: add the CRA as a payee, select the account and tax year precisely, and pay from your chequing account. CRA My Payment takes debit card payments, and pre-authorised debit can be scheduled in My Account or My Business Account for a single amount or a run of instalments. Corporations and GST/HST registrants use the same channels under their business number. Keep the confirmation number and allow several days for the payment to post.

Most tax saving comes from a short list of levers: contributing to an RRSP or a spousal RRSP, holding investments inside a TFSA, FHSA or RESP so growth is sheltered, claiming every deduction and credit you actually qualify for, and splitting income where the rules allow, such as pension income splitting. Business owners add expense timing and salary versus dividend planning. Order matters, so decide before year end rather than at filing time.

Multiply the pre-tax price by the rate for the province of supply. On a $100 purchase in 2026 that is $13.00 in Ontario (13%), $14.00 in Nova Scotia (14%), and $15.00 in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador or Prince Edward Island (15%). In the non-participating provinces and the three territories only the 5% GST applies, so $5.00, plus any provincial sales tax billed separately.

EI benefits are taxable income. Service Canada withholds income tax before each payment reaches you, and the total benefits plus the tax withheld appear on your T4E for the year. That withholding follows a basic calculation rather than your full marginal rate, so people who also worked during the year often end up with a balance owing at filing. Asking Service Canada to withhold more, or setting money aside yourself, avoids a surprise. Higher-income claimants can also have to repay part of their regular benefits through the return.

The Canada Child Benefit is a tax-free monthly payment, and the amount depends on how many children you have, their ages, and your family adjusted net income from the previous tax year. Maximum amounts are set each July and are reduced as family income rises, so two households with the same number of children can receive very different deposits. Check your own entitlement in CRA My Account or with the CRA child and family benefits calculator.

Possibly, but not through the CRA. Property tax is municipal and is based on the assessed value set by your province's assessment authority. Adding solar can raise assessed value if it is treated as an improvement, and some provinces exempt or partly exempt residential rooftop systems. Ask your assessment authority and municipality before installing. Income tax is separate: panels on a rental or business property may qualify for capital cost allowance.

The notice of assessment is issued the moment the CRA finishes assessing your return, so its timing tracks the assessment: about two weeks for a 2025 personal return filed online, up to sixteen weeks for a non-resident return, and a considerably longer standard on paper. It appears in CRA My Account first, ahead of any paper copy. Turn on email notifications so you know when it lands, and read it against what you filed.

Four things come off: federal income tax, Nova Scotia provincial income tax, CPP and EI. For 2026, CPP is 5.95% of pensionable earnings between the $3,500 exemption and $74,600, with CPP2 at 4% on earnings up to $85,000, and EI is $1.63 per $100 of insurable earnings to a $68,900 maximum. Income tax withheld depends on your pay and the credits you claimed on the personal tax credits return you gave your employer.

No fixed multiplier works, because income tax is progressive and CPP and EI stop at annual ceilings, so the deduction rate changes as pay rises. The practical method is iterative: pick a gross figure, run it through the CRA's payroll deductions online calculator, compare the net to your target and adjust until they meet. Payroll software runs the same loop automatically. Where an employer guarantees a fixed net amount, the employer absorbs the tax and the calculation is redone each period.

Not always, but filing every year is usually the better choice. A return is required when you owe tax, when the CRA asks for one, and in situations such as disposing of property or repaying certain benefits. Even with no tax payable, filing keeps benefit and credit payments flowing, builds RRSP room and records tuition amounts or capital losses you can carry forward. Personal returns for the 2025 tax year were due 30 April 2026.
