Alberta has no provincial sales tax, so only the 5% federal GST applies. This is the lowest consumption tax burden in Canada and simplifies filing considerably. Alberta levies no employer health tax or provincial payroll tax.

For the 2025 tax year the filing and payment deadline is 30 April 2026. If you or your spouse were self-employed, the filing deadline moves to 15 June 2026, but any balance owing is still due 30 April 2026. Interest starts the day after the payment deadline, and a late-filing penalty applies on top when a return with a balance owing is filed late. File on time even with nothing owing, because income-tested benefits are recalculated from the filed return.
Sign in to CRA My Account and open the tax returns section, which lists your assessed returns, notices of assessment and reassessment, and carry-forward amounts for earlier years. You can also download a proof of income statement, request a copy by phone, or ask whoever prepared the return for you. Keep your own copy and the supporting records for six years from the end of the tax year they relate to.
Several NETFILE certified programs are free to use for straightforward returns, and the CRA publishes the certified list each filing season. If your income is modest and your return is simple, a free volunteer tax clinic can prepare and file it for you. Some people also receive a CRA invitation to file through a simplified phone or digital service. Free tools cover most employment and pension returns; self-employment, rental or foreign income usually needs more.
Most municipalities do not take credit cards for property tax directly. They accept pre-authorised debit, online or telephone banking, cheque, and in-person payment. Third-party payment processors will charge a property tax bill to a card for a service fee, which normally costs more than the rewards earned. The CRA works the same way for income tax and GST/HST: no direct card payment, but authorised third-party providers accept cards for a fee.
The federal goods and services tax is 5% in 2026, and has been since it dropped from 6% to 5% on 1 January 2008. You pay the 5% on its own in Alberta, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon. In British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Quebec it sits alongside a separate provincial tax, and in the five participating provinces it is folded into the HST rate.
The repayment period is 15 years. It normally starts the second year after the year of your first withdrawal, Temporary relief enacted in 2024 pushes that start out to the fifth year after the withdrawal year, but only for a first withdrawal made between 1 January 2022 and 31 December 2025; a first withdrawal made in 2026 falls under the standard rule, so 2028 is its first repayment year. Any shortfall in a year is added to your income.
For the 2025 tax year the payment deadline is 30 April 2026, and that date applies even to self-employed filers who have until 15 June 2026 to file the return itself. Pay by online banking, the CRA's payment service, pre-authorised debit or through a financial institution. Corporations run on their own fiscal year: the T2 is due six months after year end, with the balance due two months after year end, or three months for an eligible CCPC claiming the small business deduction.
Every province and territory sets its own income tax brackets, rates and credits, and they apply on top of the federal brackets to produce your combined marginal rate. Alberta uses fewer bands than British Columbia, for example, and most jurisdictions index their thresholds each year. Your province of residence on 31 December decides which table applies to the whole year, so look up that province's schedule for the year you are filing rather than a national figure.
A new assessed value or municipal rate applies for the tax year the municipality sets it for, not from the day you receive the notice. Provincial assessment bodies value properties as at a fixed valuation date and phase increases in over a cycle, then councils set the annual rates, which appear on the final bill rather than the interim one. A reassessment after a renovation or a change in use can be billed back to its effective date.
Only for specific purposes. Fees paid to collect or establish a right to salary, wages, a pension, severance or support amounts, and fees to object to or appeal a CRA assessment, are claimed in the deductions section of the T1, on the line the CRA's guide names. Legal costs of earning business or rental income belong on the T2125 or the rental statement. Fees to acquire property are usually added to its cost instead of deducted.
