Saskatoon: Our Analysis

Saskatchewan applies its own 6% PST on top of 5% GST, and its PST base is broader than most provinces, reaching many services that are untaxed elsewhere. For Saskatoon's agriculture, mining and construction businesses, the practical risk is under-collecting PST on services rather than goods. Agricultural operations add a further distinction: farming income is taxed under its own rules, including cash-basis reporting available to farmers, which is unavailable to almost every other type of business.

Reading Between the Lines on Saskatoon

Every province writes its own fine print, and Saskatchewan is no exception. Here is how a tax preparation specialist working with Saskatoon owners reads that fine print in practice.

Here is the regime your invoices live under. Saskatchewan charges 5% GST plus 6% PST filed separately with the province. PST applies to some services that are GST-exempt, which is a common source of assessment errors. If a Saskatoon business gets only one thing right in its opening months, it should be this.

On the corporate side, the provincial rate structure shapes year-end planning. Saskatchewan applies a 1% small business rate on the first $600,000 of active business income — a higher threshold than the federal $500,000 limit. It is the first thing we walk Saskatoon owners through.

Before a Saskatoon business runs its first pay cycle, we check the provincial levy position. Saskatchewan levies no employer health tax. Knowing where you stand against it determines how the payroll accounts get set up.

Ask your tax preparation specialist to walk the provincial program list against your year. Programs such as Saskatchewan Technology Start-up Incentive, Saskatchewan Manufacturing and Processing Exporter Tax Incentive exist precisely for activities many Saskatchewan businesses already do; the only way to know whether yours qualify is to check. Most Saskatoon owners meet this rule for the first time at their first year-end with us.

If you work in or around agriculture, potash and uranium mining, energy and manufacturing, your return has cousins all over Saskatoon — an income tax specialist filing here has usually seen your exact fact pattern before, which is precisely the advantage you want at tax time.

Our model is simple: the same fixed fee everywhere in Canada, and review-then-pay. Where you live affects your return; it does not affect what you are charged. For a Saskatoon business, that is the ground floor of the filing.

Corporate tax and accounting in Saskatoon

Saskatoon's economy is built on agriculture, mining, construction and the professional and technical services that support them. Saskatchewan applies its provincial sales tax more broadly than most provinces, which is where local businesses most often trip.

Saskatchewan PST reaches a wider range of services and, critically, construction and real-property contracts, where the contractor is often the consumer of materials rather than a reseller. Applying an out-of-province approach to these contracts creates real exposure. Saskatchewan's agriculture and mining-supply corporations also carry equipment-heavy capital cost allowance schedules where classification drives the deduction.

Saskatchewan administers corporate income tax through the federal T2, so there is no separate provincial return, but the PST treatment of contracts and services is genuinely provincial and easy to get wrong. We determine the correct PST treatment for your contracts and reconcile it with your corporate filing.

Before You Call: Saskatoon Tax Filing FAQs

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does a tax accountant in Saskatoon cost?

Corporate tax filing starts at $90 and monthly bookkeeping at $10, the same fixed rates we charge nationally. Saskatoon businesses pay no location premium, and the quote is agreed before work starts. See the full pricing breakdown.

Do I need to meet my Saskatoon accountant in person?

No. Everything runs through a secure portal with e-signatures, so documents never travel by mail and nothing is lost in transit. Clients across Saskatoon complete an entire filing without a single in-person meeting, though calls are always available.

Which tax deadlines apply to Saskatoon businesses?

Corporate T2 returns are due six months after your fiscal year-end, with any balance owing payable within two or three months depending on your CCPC status. Personal T1 returns are due April 30, and June 15 for the self-employed. GST/HST depends on your filing frequency.

Can you handle both my corporate and personal returns?

Yes, and doing both together is where most of the planning value sits. Salary-versus-dividend mix, shareholder loans and RRSP room interact across the two returns, and treating them separately is how owners overpay. Explore all our services.

What if my books are behind by several years?

That is routine work for us. We rebuild the ledger year by year, file the outstanding returns in sequence, and where eligible apply to the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties and interest.

Are you taking on new clients in Saskatoon?

Yes, we are actively taking on new corporate and personal clients in Saskatoon, including mid-season transfers from another accountant. Transferring is straightforward and we request the prior files on your behalf.

What industries do you serve in Saskatoon?

Construction, healthcare and medical practices, restaurants, e-commerce, real estate, transportation, professional services, technology startups and registered non-profits. Each carries a distinct deduction profile. See our industry specialisms.

How do I switch to your firm from my current accountant?

Tell us who currently holds your files and we handle the professional handover, including requesting working papers and prior-year returns. There is no gap in your compliance and no awkward conversation required on your side.

What is the deadline for filing corporate taxes in Saskatoon?

In Saskatoon, corporate tax returns (T2) are due within six months of the corporation's fiscal year-end. If you owe tax, the balance must be paid within 2 or 3 months of the year-end.

How much do tax accountants in Saskatoon charge?

Our personal tax filing services in Saskatoon start from $25, and corporate tax returns start from $90, offered under our 100% Risk-Free price match guarantee.

Does your accounting firm handle CRA audits for clients in Saskatoon?

Yes! We provide direct CRA audit defense and representation services for businesses and individuals throughout Saskatchewan and across Canada.

Where is your Saskatoon office located?

Our Saskatoon office is at 409 3rd Ave S, Saskatoon, SK S7K 5R5. Documents can also be exchanged on secure cloud software and signed electronically, so a visit is never required to get your filing done.

What sales tax does a Saskatoon business charge?

Saskatchewan charges 5% GST plus 6% PST filed separately with the province. PST applies to some services that are GST-exempt, which is a common source of assessment errors. It is the first thing we walk Saskatoon owners through.

What should a Saskatoon corporation expect at tax time?

Saskatchewan applies a 1% small business rate on the first $600,000 of active business income — a higher threshold than the federal $500,000 limit. That is the backdrop for every Saskatoon engagement we take on.

File a T1 return for the year, sending it electronically with CRA-certified software or mailing a paper return. Gather your slips and receipts first and check them against the ones listed in My Account. For the 2025 tax year the filing and payment deadline was 30 April 2026, or 15 June 2026 to file if you or your spouse were self-employed, with payment still due 30 April 2026. CRA online filing for 2025 returns closes 29 January 2027.

For the 2025 tax year the filing and payment deadline is 30 April 2026. If you or your spouse carried on a business, the return itself is due 15 June 2026, but any balance owing is still due 30 April 2026. Interest runs on unpaid amounts after the payment deadline, and a late-filed return with a balance owing also attracts a late-filing penalty. Filing on time keeps benefit and credit payments flowing.

Online banking is the simplest route: add the CRA as a payee, select the account and tax year precisely, and pay from your chequing account. CRA My Payment takes debit card payments, and pre-authorised debit can be scheduled in My Account or My Business Account for a single amount or a run of instalments. Corporations and GST/HST registrants use the same channels under their business number. Keep the confirmation number and allow several days for the payment to post.

If you owe nothing, no penalty applies, but a refund and benefit payments such as the Canada child benefit and the GST/HST credit are held up until the return is processed. If you owe, a late-filing penalty is charged and interest runs on the balance and compounds daily from the day after the due date. For the 2025 tax year the deadline was 30 April 2026. File even if you cannot pay, because the penalty is driven by filing, not payment.

Yes, and usually you should. A return with no income is how the CRA works out the GST/HST credit, the Canada child benefit and provincial credits, all of which depend on a filed return. It also keeps carryforward amounts such as unused tuition on record and gets back any tax withheld. Skipping a year can pause benefit payments until you file, and there is no penalty for filing a nil return.

Once you stop being a small supplier. That happens when your taxable revenue passes $30,000 measured over four consecutive calendar quarters, or within a single calendar quarter - and if you cross the threshold inside one quarter, you must charge GST/HST on the very sale that takes you over. You then register and file returns for the assigned period. You can also register voluntarily below the threshold to recover input tax credits.

Yes. A bank or other payer that issues you a T5 also files a copy with the Canada Revenue Agency, so your investment income is on file whether or not the slip reaches you. Issued slips generally show up in My Account, which is worth checking before you file. Report the income even when a slip is missing or late, because omitting it invites a reassessment with interest, and interest income is taxable in full at your marginal rate.

Cash tips are taxable income, so leaving them off your T1 understates income and the CRA can reassess the year, charge interest and add a penalty. Where slips are missing it can estimate earnings from deposits, industry norms and lifestyle, which usually costs more than reporting honestly would have. Report the total even though it appears on no slip, and keep a daily tip log so your figure can be supported.

The Canada Revenue Agency is the federal body that administers income tax, GST/HST, payroll deductions and most benefit payments, including the Canada child benefit and the GST/HST credit. It processes returns, issues assessments and refunds, collects amounts owing, and runs reviews and audits. Provinces set their own rates, but the CRA collects personal and corporate tax for every province except Quebec, which administers its own returns through Revenu Quebec. You reach it by phone or through CRA My Account.

Saskatchewan residents pay federal income tax plus Saskatchewan provincial income tax, filed together on one T1 return, with the provincial share set by its own brackets and credits. Purchases carry federal GST plus the Saskatchewan provincial sales tax, applied separately rather than blended into a harmonised rate, and businesses register for and remit each one separately. Property tax and education levies are billed municipally. Confirm current rates against the latest provincial budget before quoting them.

Yes. The CRA does telephone individuals and businesses about balances owing, missing returns, audits and benefit reviews, and an agent may leave a voicemail asking you to call back. It will not threaten arrest or deportation, demand payment by gift card, e-transfer or crypto, or pressure you to stay on the line. Check My Account for the same message before acting, and call the CRA back on a number from canada.ca.

Filing a GST/HST return late while money is owing brings a penalty calculated from the balance owing and the number of months the return is overdue, plus interest compounded daily. Filing late with nothing owing normally carries no penalty, though a return the CRA formally demanded does. File even when you cannot pay: filing stops the late-filing side from growing while you arrange the balance or a payment plan.
