Business Number (BN)

Corporate

A Business Number is the unique nine-digit identifier the CRA assigns to a business, to which program accounts like GST/HST, payroll and corporate income tax are attached.

The Business Number is your company's single identifier with the CRA and many other government programs. To the nine-digit BN, you add two-letter program account identifiers: RT for GST/HST, RP for payroll, RC for corporate income tax, and others for import/export.

Registering for a BN is the first step in setting up most of a business's CRA obligations. A corporation receives one on incorporation or when it first needs a program account; a sole proprietor registers when they need GST/HST or payroll accounts.

Example

A new corporation gets Business Number 123456789. It adds an RT account for HST, an RP account for payroll, and an RC account for its T2, all under the same nine-digit BN.

A tax deduction is an amount subtracted from your income before tax is worked out, so it reduces the income being taxed rather than the tax bill directly. Its worth depends on your marginal rate: the higher the rate, the more the deduction saves. Common examples are RRSP contributions, child care costs, union dues, moving expenses and business expenses. Credits work the other way, reducing the tax calculated on that income.

The GST rate is 5%, unchanged since 1 January 2008 and current for 2025 and 2026. It reaches every province and territory, but in five provinces it is folded into the HST: you charge 13% in Ontario, 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island, and 14% in Nova Scotia, down from 15% on 1 April 2025. In Alberta, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon, 5% applies alone.

Taxation is the compulsory collection of money by government to pay for public services. In Canada it operates at three levels: federal and provincial income and sales taxes, and municipal property taxes. Income tax is self-assessed, meaning you report your own income and claim your own deductions, and the CRA verifies afterwards through assessment and review. Rates are progressive, so later slices of income are taxed more heavily while the earlier slices stay at lower rates.

Open the forms and publications section of canada.ca, search by form number or title, and choose the PDF for the tax year you need, because forms change from year to year and prior-year versions stay available in the same place. Most personal filers need no printed forms at all, since software approved for NETFILE builds the T1 and transmits it. Paper filers should print the version for their province or territory of residence.
