Niagara: Our Analysis

Observations From Our Niagara Files

A return prepared in Niagara carries Ontario rules on top of the federal ones, and the provincial layer is where corners get cut. These notes exist so yours don't.

Before anything else, sales tax: Ontario uses a single 13% HST administered by the CRA, so you file one combined return rather than separate federal and provincial ones. Most Niagara owners meet this rule for the first time at their first year-end with us.

The question is never just what the corporation owes — it is what the corporation should do before year-end so the answer is sensible. Ontario applies a 3.2% small business rate on the first $500,000 of active business income, giving a 12.2% combined federal-provincial rate. That is the constraint a tax consultant plans around for Niagara companies.

Employer Health Tax (EHT) applies above a $1,000,000 annual payroll exemption for eligible employers. If you are hiring in Niagara, that sentence belongs in your staffing plan, not just your tax file — it changes what each additional employee actually costs.

Ontario runs its own incentive programs — Ontario Innovation Tax Credit, Ontario Made Manufacturing Investment Tax Credit, Ontario Regional Opportunities Investment Tax Credit among them — and a year-end review is the only way to know which apply. It shapes how we scope every Niagara file.

Local knowledge in tax work is really sector knowledge. Niagara runs on finance, professional services, manufacturing, technology and healthcare, so that is where an accountant's pattern recognition gets built — and where it pays off on your return.

The thing your postal code will never change is our price. We serve all of Canada at the same fixed fee — no location premium — and payment only happens after you have reviewed the finished work. It is the first thing we walk Niagara owners through.

Common Questions About Niagara Tax Filing

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does a tax accountant in Niagara cost?

Corporate tax filing starts at $90 and monthly bookkeeping at $10, the same fixed rates we charge nationally. Niagara businesses pay no location premium, and the quote is agreed before work starts. See the full pricing breakdown.

Do I need to meet my Niagara accountant in person?

No. Everything runs through a secure portal with e-signatures, so documents never travel by mail and nothing is lost in transit. Clients across Niagara complete an entire filing without a single in-person meeting, though calls are always available.

Which tax deadlines apply to Niagara businesses?

Corporate T2 returns are due six months after your fiscal year-end, with any balance owing payable within two or three months depending on your CCPC status. Personal T1 returns are due April 30, and June 15 for the self-employed. GST/HST depends on your filing frequency.

Can you handle both my corporate and personal returns?

Yes, and doing both together is where most of the planning value sits. Salary-versus-dividend mix, shareholder loans and RRSP room interact across the two returns, and treating them separately is how owners overpay. Explore all our services.

What if my books are behind by several years?

That is routine work for us. We rebuild the ledger year by year, file the outstanding returns in sequence, and where eligible apply to the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties and interest.

Are you taking on new clients in Niagara?

Yes, we are actively taking on new corporate and personal clients in Niagara, including mid-season transfers from another accountant. Transferring is straightforward and we request the prior files on your behalf.

What industries do you serve in Niagara?

Construction, healthcare and medical practices, restaurants, e-commerce, real estate, transportation, professional services, technology startups and registered non-profits. Each carries a distinct deduction profile. See our industry specialisms.

How do I switch to your firm from my current accountant?

Tell us who currently holds your files and we handle the professional handover, including requesting working papers and prior-year returns. There is no gap in your compliance and no awkward conversation required on your side.

What is the deadline for filing corporate taxes in Niagara?

In Niagara, corporate tax returns (T2) are due within six months of the corporation's fiscal year-end. If you owe tax, the balance must be paid within 2 or 3 months of the year-end.

How much do tax accountants in Niagara charge?

Our personal tax filing services in Niagara start from $25, and corporate tax returns start from $90, offered under our 100% Risk-Free price match guarantee.

Does your accounting firm handle CRA audits for clients in Niagara?

Yes! We provide direct CRA audit defense and representation services for businesses and individuals throughout Ontario and across Canada.

Do you have an office in Niagara?

We do not have a storefront in Niagara. Documents are exchanged on secure cloud software and everything is signed electronically, and the fee is the same in Niagara as anywhere else in Canada, with no location premium. Our head office is at 381 Front St W, Toronto, and you can reach the team on +1-416-619-0068.

What sales tax does a Niagara business charge?

Ontario uses a single 13% HST administered by the CRA, so you file one combined return rather than separate federal and provincial ones. For a Niagara business, that is the ground floor of the filing.

What corporate tax rates apply to a Niagara corporation?

Ontario applies a 3.2% small business rate on the first $500,000 of active business income, giving a 12.2% combined federal-provincial rate. We build every Niagara engagement around that fact.

People Also Ask About Niagara

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

Ontario charges land transfer tax on the value of the consideration, normally the purchase price, when the transfer is registered. The rates are graduated: each band of the price is taxed at its own rate, so the bill rises faster than the price. Toronto adds a second municipal land transfer tax on top. First-time buyers may claim a rebate, and buyers who are neither citizens nor permanent residents can face an extra non-resident charge. Run your actual price through the province's calculator before closing.

Divide the total by one plus the tax rate, then subtract that result from the total to get the tax. In Ontario at 13% HST divide by 1.13; in Nova Scotia at 14% from 1 April 2025 divide by 1.14; where only 5% GST applies divide by 1.05. Quebec is layered, because QST of 9.975% applies to the pre-GST price, giving a combined 14.975%, so divide by 1.14975 to reach the pre-tax amount.

Severance is employment income in the year you receive it, taxed at your marginal rate like salary. Your employer withholds tax at source using lump-sum withholding rates, which are often lower than your final rate, so a balance can come due at filing. A retiring allowance can sometimes be transferred directly to an RRSP, sheltering it until withdrawal. Legal fees to collect severance may be deductible. Check the CRA's retiring allowances guidance before signing.

Yes. Meals and drinks served in an Ontario restaurant are taxable at 13% HST, unlike basic groceries, which are zero-rated. Ontario also gives a point-of-sale rebate of the provincial part of the HST on qualifying prepared food and beverages sold under a set price, so those items end up carrying only the 5% federal portion. The CRA's point-of-sale rebate guidance lists the qualifying items and the current price limit.

Usually yes. The CRA assesses the return first, issues the notice of assessment, then releases any refund, so the notice appears in My Account at or just before the deposit. Sometimes the money lands a day or two ahead of a paper notice arriving in the mail. For a return filed online, expect about two weeks from filing to refund. My Account shows the assessment date and the deposit.

A voluntary tip you choose to leave is not subject to HST, because it is not part of the price of the meal. A mandatory service charge the restaurant adds to the bill, such as the automatic gratuity on a large table, forms part of what you pay for the meal, so Ontario's 13% HST applies to it. Check the bill: tax belongs on the food and any compulsory charge, not on a tip you decided yourself.

Yes, where the underlying expense is deductible for the business. A tip on a client meal follows the meals and entertainment rule, so only a portion of the total, tip included, is deductible. A tip on a deductible taxi, delivery or hotel charge is deductible in full as part of that cost. Keep the receipt showing the amount and note the business purpose, since cash tips with no record are the first thing a reviewer removes.

Yes. Footwear is a taxable supply, so Ontario's 13% HST applies to adult shoes, and GST at 5% plus any provincial tax applies elsewhere. Children's footwear is treated differently in Ontario: a point-of-sale rebate removes the provincial part of the HST for children's shoes up to a specified size, leaving the 5% federal part. Retailers apply that rebate at the till. The CRA's point-of-sale rebate guidance sets out which sizes qualify.

Employment income is your gross pay before deductions. Box 14 of your T4 shows the full amount your employer paid you, while income tax, CPP and EI withheld appear in separate boxes rather than being subtracted from it. You report the gross figure on your T1, and the tax withheld is then credited against the tax calculated on your return, which is why the same withholding appears again further down.

You stay responsible. The CRA assesses penalties and interest against the taxpayer, not the preparer. File as soon as possible to stop the penalty growing, then ask the CRA to cancel or waive the penalties and interest with a taxpayer relief request on form RC4288, explaining what happened. Relief is discretionary and is refused more often where the taxpayer never followed up on the missed deadline. Recovering anything from the preparer is a separate matter between you and them.

HST applies only in Ontario at 13%, Nova Scotia at 14% since 1 April 2025, and New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island at 15%. Everywhere else the federal GST of 5% applies on its own or beside a separate provincial tax: British Columbia PST 7%, Saskatchewan 6%, Manitoba RST 7%, and Quebec QST 9.975% charged on the pre-GST price. Alberta and the three territories charge GST only.

T4 slips must be filed with the CRA and given to employees by the last day of February following the calendar year the slips cover. Where that day falls on a weekend or a public holiday, the next business day applies. Filing late brings a penalty that grows with the number of slips and how late they are. An employee who never receives a slip can usually view it in CRA My Account.
