T1 General

GST/HST Return
The sales-tax return businesses file to remit GST/HST collected, net of input tax credits.
Selkirk: Our Analysis

Selkirk's steel mill anchors its economy: shift-premium T4s with union dues, maintenance contractors managing T5018 reporting, and suppliers absorbing Manitoba's 7% RST on parts — which, unlike GST, returns no input credits. Manitoba's 0% small business rate means incorporated contractors pay only federal tax on their first $500,000, and the catfish-fishing tourism season adds small seasonal files.

Field Notes: Selkirk

Some of our Selkirk clients come to us after a reassessment; the rest come before. These practitioner's notes on the Manitoba regime are written for the second group.

New Selkirk owners often assume the sales-tax setup is a formality. It isn't. Manitoba charges 5% GST plus a 7% Retail Sales Tax filed separately with Manitoba Finance. RST is not recoverable as an input tax credit. The businesses that internalize this early keep their books clean; the rest generate correction work.

On the corporate side, the provincial rate structure shapes year-end planning. Manitoba applies a 0% small business rate, so the first $500,000 of active business income is taxed at only the 9% federal rate. That single point drives more Selkirk conversations than any other.

Hiring in Selkirk adds one more line to the payroll setup. The Health and Post-Secondary Education Tax Levy applies once annual payroll exceeds $2,250,000.

Do any of Manitoba Small Business Venture Capital Tax Credit, Manitoba Manufacturing Investment Tax Credit, Manitoba Interactive Digital Media Tax Credit touch your business? The honest answer: it depends entirely on your circumstances. What we can say from the files we see is that Manitoba owners far more often skip the question than receive a no. Every Selkirk file we prepare starts from that reality.

Because Selkirk's economy leans on agriculture, manufacturing, transportation and financial services, the local filing season has a recognizable shape for an accountant: the same sector-driven income types, the same deduction questions, the same provincial wrinkles, year after year.

Our model is simple: the same fixed fee everywhere in Canada, and review-then-pay. Where you live affects your return; it does not affect what you are charged. That single point drives more Selkirk conversations than any other.

Case Study 1

$102,000 Proposed Adjustment Withdrawn In Full — Millwork Shop, Selkirk

A millwork shop in Selkirk, Manitoba faced a $102,000 proposed reassessment. It came after sector-specific exposure the previous accountant had not seen before. We rebuilt the documentation and the adjustment was withdrawn in full.

A millwork shop in Selkirk, Manitoba received a proposal letter opening a review of its MB tax and accounting file. The CRA had identified sector-specific exposure the previous accountant had not seen before. It proposed an adjustment of $102,000, with 30 days to respond. We treated the response as an evidence exercise rather than an argument. We assessed and claimed Manitoba Manufacturing Investment Tax Credit alongside the federal return. We then indexed every supporting document against the specific line the auditor had questioned. The proposed adjustment was withdrawn in full — all $102,000 of it. The file closed in 4 weeks with no change to the assessed amounts and no penalty.

Case Study 2

Growth Handled Without A Missed Filing, $72,000 Freed — Plastics Moulder, Selkirk

A plastics moulder in Selkirk, Manitoba was scaling. The growth exposed a provincial payroll levy that had never been registered for or remitted. The back office was rebuilt to match, freeing $72,000.

A plastics moulder in Selkirk, Manitoba was opening in a second province. That meant different filing obligations and a different payroll regime. A provincial payroll levy that had never been registered for or remitted already sat in the file. We assessed and claimed Manitoba Small Business Venture Capital Tax Credit alongside the federal return. We then put monthly reporting in place. That let the owner see the cash effect of growth while there was still time to act on it. Growth was absorbed without a compliance failure. $72,000 of cash was released, and the monthly reporting now flags a problem while it is still small.

Case Study 3

$43,000 Saved By Correcting What Prior Filings Had Missed — Fishing Enterprise, Selkirk

A second opinion for a fishing enterprise in Selkirk, Manitoba recovered $43,000 a year. It found input tax credits claimed against MB provincial tax, which is not recoverable the way GST is in prior filings.

A fishing enterprise in Selkirk, Manitoba asked for a second opinion on its MB tax and accounting file. That followed three years of rising tax. The review found input tax credits claimed against MB provincial tax, which is not recoverable the way GST is. We built the comparison first: current structure against two alternatives. Then we registered the provincial payroll account, caught up the outstanding remittances, and applied for relief on the penalty. First-year saving of $43,000, with the same benefit recurring. Every position taken is documented and supported in the file.

Case Study 4

Remittance Schedule Corrected, $81,000 Refunded — Greenhouse Grower, Selkirk

Remittances at a greenhouse grower in Selkirk, Manitoba were chronically late. It came down to provincial sales tax collected but never remitted on the separate MB return. Fixing the schedule refunded $81,000.

Remittances at a greenhouse grower in Selkirk, Manitoba were consistently late by a few days. That was enough to trigger penalties every quarter. Behind it sat provincial sales tax collected but never remitted on the separate MB return. We recalculated the corporate tax at the 9% combined small business rate and rebased the instalments on the current year. Then we moved the remittance dates into a scheduled process rather than a monthly decision. Penalties stopped from the following remittance onwards, and $81,000 of overpaid instalments was refunded.

Case Study 5

Month-End Close Cut From 12 Weeks To 7 Days — Rideshare Fleet Owner, Selkirk

Closing the books at a rideshare fleet owner in Selkirk, Manitoba took 12 weeks. The cause was instalments still calculated on a year the business had long outgrown. It now takes 7 days.

The accounting file at a rideshare fleet owner in Selkirk, Manitoba had a weak foundation. It was built on instalments still calculated on a year the business had long outgrown. The year-end had taken 12 weeks each of the last three years. We separated the federal GST and MB provincial sales tax streams, reconciled both to the sales ledger, and filed the corrected provincial returns. We also moved the reconciliations into the monthly cycle, so the year-end stopped being a rebuild. The file reconciles. Month-end closes in 7 days instead of 12 weeks, and the year-end is a review rather than a reconstruction.

Case Study 6

$122,000 Late-Filing Penalty Cancelled On Relief Application — Last-Mile Delivery Company, Selkirk

A last-mile delivery company in Selkirk, Manitoba had already been penalised. The issue was sector-specific exposure the previous accountant had not seen before. A relief application cancelled $122,000 of that penalty.

A last-mile delivery company in Selkirk, Manitoba had already missed one deadline and was about to miss a second. Behind it sat sector-specific exposure the previous accountant had not seen before. A penalty of $122,000 was accruing. We split the work into what had to happen before the deadline and what could follow it. Then we assessed and claimed Manitoba Manufacturing Investment Tax Credit alongside the federal return. The outstanding return was accepted as filed, and the taxpayer relief application cancelled $122,000 of the penalty already assessed on the earlier year.

Common Questions About Selkirk Tax Filing

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does a tax accountant in Selkirk cost?

Corporate tax filing starts at $90 and monthly bookkeeping at $10, the same fixed rates we charge nationally. Selkirk businesses pay no location premium, and the quote is agreed before work starts. See the full pricing breakdown.

Do I need to meet my Selkirk accountant in person?

No. Everything runs through a secure portal with e-signatures, so documents never travel by mail and nothing is lost in transit. Clients across Selkirk complete an entire filing without a single in-person meeting, though calls are always available.

Which tax deadlines apply to Selkirk businesses?

Corporate T2 returns are due six months after your fiscal year-end, with any balance owing payable within two or three months depending on your CCPC status. Personal T1 returns are due April 30, and June 15 for the self-employed. GST/HST depends on your filing frequency.

Can you handle both my corporate and personal returns?

Yes, and doing both together is where most of the planning value sits. Salary-versus-dividend mix, shareholder loans and RRSP room interact across the two returns, and treating them separately is how owners overpay. Explore all our services.

What if my books are behind by several years?

That is routine work for us. We rebuild the ledger year by year, file the outstanding returns in sequence, and where eligible apply to the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties and interest.

Are you taking on new clients in Selkirk?

Yes, we are actively taking on new corporate and personal clients in Selkirk, including mid-season transfers from another accountant. Transferring is straightforward and we request the prior files on your behalf.

What industries do you serve in Selkirk?

Construction, healthcare and medical practices, restaurants, e-commerce, real estate, transportation, professional services, technology startups and registered non-profits. Each carries a distinct deduction profile. See our industry specialisms.

How do I switch to your firm from my current accountant?

Tell us who currently holds your files and we handle the professional handover, including requesting working papers and prior-year returns. There is no gap in your compliance and no awkward conversation required on your side.

What is the deadline for filing corporate taxes in Selkirk?

In Selkirk, corporate tax returns (T2) are due within six months of the corporation's fiscal year-end. If you owe tax, the balance must be paid within 2 or 3 months of the year-end.

How much do tax accountants in Selkirk charge?

Our personal tax filing services in Selkirk start from $25, and corporate tax returns start from $90, offered under our 100% Risk-Free price match guarantee.

Does your accounting firm handle CRA audits for clients in Selkirk?

Yes! We provide direct CRA audit defense and representation services for businesses and individuals throughout Manitoba and across Canada.

Do you have an office in Selkirk?

We do not have a storefront in Selkirk. Documents are exchanged on secure cloud software and everything is signed electronically, and the fee is the same in Selkirk as anywhere else in Canada, with no location premium. Our head office is at 381 Front St W, Toronto, and you can reach the team on +1-416-619-0068.

What sales tax does a Selkirk business charge?

Manitoba charges 5% GST plus a 7% Retail Sales Tax filed separately with Manitoba Finance. RST is not recoverable as an input tax credit. That single point drives more Selkirk conversations than any other.

What should a Selkirk corporation expect at tax time?

Manitoba applies a 0% small business rate, so the first $500,000 of active business income is taxed at only the 9% federal rate. It shapes how we scope every Selkirk file.

More Selkirk Questions Canadians Ask

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

Paper returns go to the CRA tax centre that serves your province or territory of residence, not to one national address. The correct address is printed in the paper return package and listed on canada.ca under mailing addresses for individual returns, and it differs for non-residents and for business returns. Filing electronically is much faster: for the 2025 tax year the CRA aims to issue a refund on an online return in about two weeks, against a considerably longer standard on paper.

Most enquiries are settled without a phone call in My Account, My Business Account or Represent a Client, where assessments, balances, slips and CRA mail all sit. When you need a person, use the enquiries line for your programme from the contact page on canada.ca, and have your social insurance or business number plus a figure from a recent return ready for identity checks. Written enquiries go to the tax centre named on your notice of assessment.

Payroll treats each cheque as though you earned that amount every period, so a bonus, overtime, retroactive raise or an extra shift makes the cheque look like a higher annual income and more tax comes off it. A change in pay frequency, a new TD1, or a taxable benefit added mid-year does the same. CPP and EI stop for the year once their maximums are reached, so take-home often rises later on. Your return reconciles the total.

Manitoba residents pay federal income tax plus Manitoba provincial income tax on one T1 return, with the provincial share set by its own brackets and credits. On purchases you pay federal GST plus the Manitoba retail sales tax, charged as a separate provincial tax rather than blended into a single harmonised rate. Property owners also face municipal property tax and education levies. Rates move with each provincial budget, so confirm the current ones before pricing or budgeting.

An exempt supply is a sale that GST/HST does not apply to at all, and the supplier cannot claim input tax credits on the costs of making it. Typical examples are long-term residential rent, most financial services including interest and insurance, many health and dental services, child care, and most services provided by public sector bodies. Exempt sales also stay outside the $30,000 small-supplier threshold test, which for 2026 counts taxable revenue only.

Online filing for the 2025 tax year opened on 23 February 2026 and stays open until 29 January 2027. You can gather documents and prepare the return earlier, but the CRA will not accept an electronic return before it opens, and employer and investment slips are often not all issued until late February or March. The deadline was 30 April 2026, or 15 June 2026 if you or your spouse were self-employed, with payment still due 30 April.

Yes. Tips are income whether they arrive as cash, on a card or through an app. Card tips normally pass through the employer, so they are usually controlled tips: run through payroll, subject to deductions and included on your T4. Tips customers hand you and you keep are direct tips, still taxable, but reported by you because no slip shows them. Keep a daily record either way, since the CRA can ask you to support the amount.

A pension paid out as a lump sum is taxable in the year you receive it, added to your other income and taxed at your graduated rates, with tax withheld when the payment is made. That withholding is only an instalment, so a large payment can still leave a balance owing in April. A direct transfer of an eligible amount to an RRSP or RRIF defers the tax until withdrawal. Retiring allowances have their own limited transfer room.

The basic Canada Education Savings Grant pays 20% of your RESP contributions, to a maximum of $500 a year per child and $7,200 over that child's lifetime, and those are the 2026 figures. Twenty per cent of $2,500 gives the full $500. Unused grant room carries forward, so a catch-up year can draw up to $1,000. Grant can be paid up to and including the end of the calendar year the child turns 17, but for the years the child turns 16 and 17 it is paid only where the plan already has a savings history — at least $2,000 contributed and not withdrawn before the end of the year the child turned 15, or at least $100 contributed in each of any four earlier years — so opening an RESP late can forfeit the last two years of grant.

Largely no. PST in British Columbia and Saskatchewan and RST in Manitoba are retail sales taxes, not value-added taxes, so PST paid on business purchases is generally a cost rather than a credit. Relief comes from claiming an exemption at the time of purchase, such as goods bought for resale or certain production equipment, not from a return. Quebec's QST, 9.975% for 2025 and 2026, is different and is recoverable through input tax refunds, Quebec's equivalent of input tax credits.

All of it. No threshold lets cash go unreported: tips, side jobs, weekend work and cash sales are income the moment you earn them, and the CRA can reassess unreported amounts with penalties and interest. Keep a log of dates, amounts and payers, and deposit takings so records reconcile. Self-employed cash earnings go on Form T2125 with your T1 return; cash tips earned as an employee are employment income, not business income, and belong on the other-employment-income line of the T1 instead.

The CRA charges compound daily interest on an unpaid balance starting the day after the payment deadline, at the prescribed arrears rate it sets each quarter. Because that rate is reset quarterly, check the current figure on the CRA site rather than relying on one you saw last year. The same interest applies to late instalments and to penalties already charged. Paying part of the balance now reduces the interest accruing on the rest.
