Construction Contractor Tax Services: Our Analysis

A Tax Advisor's Notes on Construction Contractor Tax Services

Good construction contractor tax services work is mostly about sequencing: which questions to settle before which. These notes lay out the sequence a tax advisor follows on Construction Contractor Tax Services engagements.

First, the rule that sorts straightforward files from complicated ones: The claim has to identify each project on the prescribed form by the reporting deadline. An amended claim that adds a project the original did not mention is not accepted, even where the original claim itself was filed on time.

Layer a second constraint on top and the picture sharpens: Planning has to be in place before the transaction. The salary-versus-dividend mix, the timing of a capital purchase and the choice of year-end all change the outcome, but only prospectively. Almost every planning opportunity we see missed was available and simply not taken in time; very few are recoverable after year-end. Then there is the matter of timing, which forgives very little: Depreciable property is written off through capital cost allowance at a rate set by its class, and the half-year rule limits the first-year claim unless immediate expensing applies. Class selection is where the money is. The same asset placed in the wrong class can delay the deduction by years, and the error repeats every year until corrected.

The common thread in these rules is that they punish assumptions and reward verification. Engaging a tax advisor for construction contractor tax services is, at bottom, a way of replacing assumptions with checked answers. Gather whatever records touch the numbers — statements, ledgers, prior-year filings — and we take it from there.

As with everything we file: fixed fee agreed first, your review before submission, payment after service.

Case Study 1

Second-Province Expansion Handled, $128,000 Of Cash Released — Reformulating Food Producer, Burnaby

A food producer reformulating its product line in Burnaby, British Columbia expanded into a second province. The file already carried a claim filed at the 15% non-refundable rate when CCPC status supported 35% refundable. Every obligation was set up in advance and $128,000 of cash released.

Revenue at a food producer reformulating its product line in Burnaby, British Columbia was up sharply and cash was tighter than ever. Underneath it sat a claim filed at the 15% non-refundable rate when CCPC status supported 35% refundable. We confirmed CCPC status and refiled at the enhanced 35% refundable rate. Every new obligation was set up before it was triggered, not after. That covered registration, remittance frequency and provincial filing. $128,000 of cash was released from the working capital cycle. The expansion completed with every registration and filing obligation covered from day one.

Case Study 2

Books Rebuilt From Source, $12,500 In Unclaimed Input Tax Found — Equipment-Investing Manufacturer, Victoria

The ledger at a manufacturer investing in new production equipment in Victoria, British Columbia could not support its own filings. The reason was a provincial credit left unclaimed alongside a successful federal SR&ED claim. Rebuilding it surfaced $12,500 in unclaimed input tax.

A manufacturer investing in new production equipment in Victoria, British Columbia could not answer basic questions about its own numbers. A provincial credit left unclaimed alongside a successful federal SR&ED claim sat between the bank statements and the ledger. We filed the complete project list on the original claim rather than holding projects back for an amendment that could not be made. We then documented the process so the work does not depend on any one person remembering how it was done. Records rebuilt and reconciled, $12,500 recovered in input tax credits that the old file could not support, and a documented monthly process now in place.

Case Study 3

Reorganisation Completed Tax-Deferred, $28,000 Saved Each Year — Digital Media Game Studio, Guelph

A game studio claiming digital media credits in Guelph, Ontario had outgrown its structure. The visible cost was a filing deadline missed by three weeks, extinguishing the entire claim. The reorganisation completed tax-deferred and saves $28,000 a year.

A game studio claiming digital media credits in Guelph, Ontario had outgrown the structure it started with. A filing deadline missed by three weeks, extinguishing the entire claim was the immediate problem. The longer-term one was that the structure blocked the next step. We mapped the current structure and modelled the target. Then we identified the eligible projects, documented the technological uncertainty and systematic investigation for each, and filed a claim that survived review without adjustment. The tax-deferred elections were filed on time and the supporting valuations documented. The reorganisation completed without triggering tax, and the new structure saves approximately $28,000 a year while removing the exposure the old one carried.

Case Study 4

$133,000 In Credits Claimed That Prior Filings Had Missed — Process-Developing Manufacturer, Mississauga

4 years of filings at a manufacturer developing a production process in Mississauga, Ontario had never claimed the incentives the work qualified for. The review recovered $133,000.

A manufacturer developing a production process in Mississauga, Ontario had been filing for 4 years. In that time, the incentives its activity qualified for were never claimed. Behind that sat a provincial grant for the same project left in place while the federal claim was made on the gross spend. We tested each activity against the eligibility criteria rather than the description on the invoice. Then we layered the applicable provincial credit onto the federal claim in the same filing. $133,000 in credits claimed, with the open prior years adjusted as well. The claim passed review without adjustment.

Case Study 5

Remuneration Review Saved $60,000 Across Corporate And Personal Returns — First-Time SR&ED Claimant, Surrey

A remuneration review at a first-time SR&ED claimant in Surrey, British Columbia saved $60,000 across the corporate and personal returns. It found an amended claim adding two projects after the reporting deadline had already passed.

Nothing was wrong at a first-time SR&ED claimant in Surrey, British Columbia. The filings were on time and accurate. What they were not was planned. An amended claim adding two projects after the reporting deadline had already passed had never been reviewed. We sat with the technical staff to write each project description around the uncertainty they actually faced and the tests they ran. We ran the numbers across both the corporate and personal returns, so the saving was real rather than deferred into someone else's hands. $60,000 came off the combined corporate and personal tax bill, and the structure holds for future years without further work.

Case Study 6

11-Week Turnaround Beat The Deadline And Saved $72,000 — Medical Device Developer, Brampton

An 11-week rebuild at a medical device developer in Brampton, Ontario got the filing in with 17 days to spare. That avoided $72,000 in penalties.

A medical device developer in Brampton, Ontario was weeks away from the deadline for construction contractor tax services. Behind that sat technical narratives written by the finance team with no input from the people who ran the experiments. The exposure if the date slipped was around $72,000. We put contemporaneous tracking in place — project logs tied to time records — so the following year’s claim was defensible by construction. The filing went in complete rather than provisional, so there was no amended return to follow. Filed with 17 days to spare. $72,000 in late-filing penalties avoided, and the working papers are ready for the following year.

Questions Owners Ask About Construction Contractor Tax Services

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does Construction Contractor Tax Services cost in Canada?

Construction Contractor Tax Services starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for Construction Contractor Tax Services?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does Construction Contractor Tax Services take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We serve clients in every province and territory at the same fixed fees, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for Construction Contractor Tax Services?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes Construction Contractor Tax Services different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in Construction Contractor Tax Services?

Our construction contractor tax services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with Construction Contractor Tax Services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

How do you price construction contractor tax services for a small business?

Our answer starts where the legislation starts. A CCPC can claim SR&ED at the enhanced 35% refundable rate on the first $6 million of qualified expenditures (tax years beginning after 15 December 2024; $3 million before). A non-CCPC gets 15% non-refundable. From there it is a matter of applying it to your year — and that application, not the rule itself, is where a tax expert earns the fee.

What goes wrong most often when owners handle construction contractor tax services themselves?

The honest answer comes down to one rule. Contemporaneous documentation is what carries a SR&ED claim through review. Project notes, test logs and version histories created during the work outweigh a narrative written a year later. That is the part we verify before anything is filed.

Construction Contractor Tax Services: The Questions People Search

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

HST combines the 5% federal GST with a provincial component in five participating provinces. For 2026 the combined rates are 13% in Ontario, 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island, and 14% in Nova Scotia since 1 April 2025. Elsewhere you charge the 5% GST alone, or GST plus a separate provincial tax. The rate follows the province of supply, not where your business sits.

For the 2025 tax year the filing and payment deadline is 30 April 2026. If you or your spouse were self-employed, the filing deadline moves to 15 June 2026, but any balance owing is still due 30 April 2026. Interest starts the day after the payment deadline, and a late-filing penalty applies on top when a return with a balance owing is filed late. File on time even with nothing owing, because income-tested benefits are recalculated from the filed return.

There is no single rate. Federal personal income tax for 2026 runs through five brackets: 14%, then 20.5%, 26%, 29% and 33% on the highest band, and your province's brackets stack on top, so your combined marginal rate is the federal rate plus the provincial one. The 2026 federal basic personal amount is $16,452, tapering to $14,829 as net income rises from $181,440 to $258,482. Capital gains and Canadian dividends are taxed on a different basis.

Canada runs three systems. The federal GST is 5% for 2026 and applies nationally. Five participating provinces fold a provincial share into one harmonised rate: 13% in Ontario, 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island, and 14% in Nova Scotia since 1 April 2025. Others add their own tax to the 5% GST, giving 12% in British Columbia and Manitoba, 11% in Saskatchewan and 14.975% in Quebec. Alberta and the territories charge 5% only.

Multiply the pre-tax price by the combined sales tax rate for the province where the sale takes place, then add that amount to the price. In HST provinces it is one rate; elsewhere GST and the provincial tax are applied separately, and in Quebec the QST is calculated on the price before GST rather than on a GST-included amount. Zero-rated and exempt items get nothing added. The place of supply decides the rate, not where your business is based.

Rent is not deductible against employment income, so most tenants claim nothing for it directly. It can still matter. Ontario tenants may report rent paid toward the Ontario energy and property tax credit on the provincial benefits schedule, and Quebec and Manitoba have their own renter measures. If you are self-employed or required to work from home, a reasonable share of rent based on workspace area is deductible. Keep receipts, the amounts paid and your landlord's details.

A Canadian business can face corporate income tax federally and provincially, GST/HST or provincial sales tax on what it sells, payroll withholding with employer CPP and EI, property tax on premises it owns, and payroll or health levies in some provinces. An unincorporated business reports its profit on a T2125 with the owner's T1 instead of paying corporate tax. Which ones apply depends on structure, where you operate, and whether you have employees.

Most are. CPP, Old Age Security, employer pensions, annuity and RRIF payments and RRSP withdrawals all go into income at your marginal rate. TFSA withdrawals are not taxable and do not affect benefits. OAS is clawed back once net income passes a threshold set each year, so check the current figure on the CRA site. Pension income splitting with a spouse and the pension income credit can cut the total, and tax can be withheld at source.

Yes. Social assistance is reported on a slip and included in income, then offset by a matching deduction, so it does not create tax, but it does count when benefits are calculated. Filing is how you receive refundable amounts: the GST/HST credit, the Canada child benefit, provincial credits, and any tax withheld on other income during the year. Many people on assistance get money back only because they filed, so file every year even with no tax payable.

A transmitter number identifies whoever sends information returns, such as T4 or T5 slips, to the CRA electronically. Many filers never need one, because internet file transfer accepts a web access code tied to the business number on the return. If you transmit for several businesses or use software that demands the identifier, request it through the CRA's electronic services helpdesk. Start from the CRA's pages on filing information returns electronically, which set out what each return type requires.

Your T5 comes from the bank, credit union or payer that paid the investment income, so ask the issuer first. Copies the CRA has received also appear under tax information slips in My Account, usually once the issuer has filed them. If a slip never arrives, report the income from your own statements rather than leaving it off, and the CRA will match its own copy when the return is assessed.

Yes. For an unpaid tax debt the CRA can issue a requirement to pay straight to your employer, bank or a client who owes you money, without a court order, and the recipient must send part of what they owe you to the CRA until the debt clears. The CRA is expected to try to reach you first. Once it is issued, the way out is to pay the balance, file any outstanding returns, or negotiate a payment arrangement.
