The Vocabulary Behind Cryptocurrency Tax Return

T1 General
The personal income tax return individuals file with the CRA each year.
T2 Corporate Return
The corporate income tax return every incorporated Canadian business must file.
GST/HST Return
The sales-tax return businesses file to remit GST/HST collected, net of input tax credits.
Cryptocurrency Tax Return: Our Analysis

The CRA distinguishes capital gains from business income by pattern of activity, and adventure-in-the-nature-of-trade rules can tax frequent trading in full. CRA interest on unpaid balances compounds daily at the prescribed rate plus 4%, which is why filing on time matters even when you cannot pay yet. Because the fee is fixed and pocket-friendly, the economics stay predictable whether your file is simple or messy.

Reading Between the Lines on Cryptocurrency Tax Return

Most of what goes wrong with cryptocurrency tax return goes wrong before anyone opens the software. As a tax services provider, that is where these notes on Cryptocurrency Tax Return begin.

Everything in cryptocurrency tax return hangs off a single anchor. An expense is deductible where it was incurred to earn income and is reasonable in the circumstances. The business-use portion must be supported, which for vehicles means a logbook. The CRA rarely argues that an expense category is wrong; it argues that the proportion claimed was never substantiated.

The second point follows directly from the first. A T1 adjustment can reach back ten calendar years, and ReFILE handles most changes without a paper T1-ADJ. Most missed refunds are still recoverable years later. Very few taxpayers go back and look. Then there is the matter of timing, which forgives very little: T1 returns are due April 30, and June 15 for the self-employed — but any balance owing is due April 30 regardless, with interest compounding daily from that date. The June deadline misleads a great many self-employed filers into paying two months late without realising it.

The practical upshot is simple: every one of these rules has a version that helps you and a version that costs you, and which one applies depends on choices made before filing. That is precisely the ground a tax services provider covers. Think of this list as the raw material a tax services provider works from on cryptocurrency tax return.

You see the completed work before you pay for it — the quote is locked up front and nothing is filed until you approve it.

Cryptocurrency Tax Return: Straight Answers to Common Questions

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does Cryptocurrency Tax Return cost in Canada?

Cryptocurrency Tax Return starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for Cryptocurrency Tax Return?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does Cryptocurrency Tax Return take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We are a cloud-based practice serving every province and territory, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for Cryptocurrency Tax Return?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes Cryptocurrency Tax Return different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in Cryptocurrency Tax Return services?

Our cryptocurrency tax return services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with Cryptocurrency Tax Return services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

What records do I need before starting cryptocurrency tax return?

The short answer comes straight from our working notes: A T1 adjustment can reach back ten calendar years, and ReFILE handles most changes without a paper T1-ADJ. Most missed refunds are still recoverable years later. Very few taxpayers go back and look. How that plays out on your file depends on the specifics, which is exactly what the engagement is for.

How long does cryptocurrency tax return usually take from start to finish?

An expense is deductible where it was incurred to earn income and is reasonable in the circumstances. The business-use portion must be supported, which for vehicles means a logbook. The CRA rarely argues that an expense category is wrong; it argues that the proportion claimed was never substantiated. That is the part most owners have not heard before they sit down with us, and it usually changes what they do next.

More Cryptocurrency Tax Return Questions Canadians Ask

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

If you owe nothing, no penalty applies, but a refund and benefit payments such as the Canada child benefit and the GST/HST credit are held up until the return is processed. If you owe, a late-filing penalty is charged and interest runs on the balance and compounds daily from the day after the due date. For the 2025 tax year the deadline was 30 April 2026. File even if you cannot pay, because the penalty is driven by filing, not payment.

The basic personal amount is a non-refundable credit that shelters a base level of income from federal tax, so income below it carries no federal tax. The amount is indexed every year, and the enhanced portion is phased out across the second-highest federal bracket, so taxpayers in the top bracket receive only the base amount. Each province and territory sets its own version. On Form TD1 you claim it so your employer withholds less; claim it with one employer only, or too little tax is withheld.

Several NETFILE certified programs are free to use for straightforward returns, and the CRA publishes the certified list each filing season. If your income is modest and your return is simple, a free volunteer tax clinic can prepare and file it for you. Some people also receive a CRA invitation to file through a simplified phone or digital service. Free tools cover most employment and pension returns; self-employment, rental or foreign income usually needs more.

There is no single figure. Each program sets its own income test, and most work from family net income with the amount reducing as income rises, so the GST/HST credit, the Canada child benefit, the Canada workers benefit and provincial credits all use different thresholds and adjust for family size. Free volunteer tax clinics publish their own suggested income limits. Look up the specific benefit page on canada.ca for the year in question rather than a general definition.

Contact your municipality’s tax or revenue office and ask for a reissued bill; most cities also let you view and pay it in an online property tax account set up with your roll number. Not receiving the bill does not cancel the obligation or stop late-payment charges, so ask for the amount and due dates straight away. Update your mailing address, and check whether your lender already pays the tax through your mortgage.

Gather your slips first — T4, T4A, T5, and your own figures for a T2125 if you are self-employed — then use tax software approved for filing electronically to the CRA. Sign in to My Account through the software so slips and carryforward amounts load automatically. Enter income, then deductions, then credits, and read the summary before you transmit. For the 2025 tax year filing was due 30 April 2026, or 15 June 2026 if self-employed, with payment still due 30 April.

Usually because income moved into a higher band, or a second job, bonus or RRSP withdrawal was withheld at a flat rate that ignored your total income. Federal rates for 2026 run from 14% through 20.5%, 26% and 29% to 33%, and only the income inside each band pays that band's rate. Check the tax deducted on your pay stubs against your notice of assessment, and confirm you claimed the credits and deductions available to you.

The rate follows the province where the goods are delivered. GST is 5% everywhere, and HST provinces bundle it into one rate: Ontario 13%, Nova Scotia 14% since 1 April 2025, and 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island. Elsewhere GST applies plus a provincial tax — British Columbia 7%, Saskatchewan 6%, Manitoba 7%, and Quebec 9.975% charged on the pre-GST price. Alberta and the territories have GST only. Basic groceries are zero-rated.

No. Insurance is treated as a financial service for GST/HST purposes, so the premium on an auto policy is exempt and carries no GST or HST. Some provinces charge their own tax on certain insurance premiums, which is why a policy can still show a tax line. GST/HST does apply to related taxable supplies such as repair labour, parts and a rental car, even when the insurer pays the invoice. The CRA's financial services guidance sets out the boundary.

Not automatically. Rates change only when Parliament or a legislature enacts a change, and recent movement has gone both ways: the federal bottom bracket rate is 14% for 2026, and Ontario's small business rate falls from 3.2% to 2.2% effective 1 July 2026. What does change every year is bracket and credit indexing to inflation, which lifts the income thresholds. Check the CRA's rates page for the year you are filing.

Taxable revenue is your worldwide revenue from supplies made in Canada that are taxable or zero-rated, measured before expenses. It leaves out exempt supplies such as residential rent and most health services, and it leaves out proceeds from selling capital property. This is the figure tested against the $30,000 small-supplier threshold over four consecutive calendar quarters or within a single quarter; going over in one quarter ends small-supplier status on the sale that takes you past it.
