The Vocabulary Behind Dauphin Tax Filing

T1 General
The personal income tax return individuals file with the CRA each year.
T2 Corporate Return
The corporate income tax return every incorporated Canadian business must file.
GST/HST Return
The sales-tax return businesses file to remit GST/HST collected, net of input tax credits.
Dauphin: Our Analysis

Dauphin anchors Manitoba's Parkland: mixed grain and cattle farms, a working main street and rural trades. Farm returns here manage AgriInvest and AgriStability reporting, zero-rated GST sales and the farm fuel exemptions, while incorporated businesses pay no provincial tax at all on their first $500,000 thanks to Manitoba's 0% small business rate. The recurring chore is the separate 7% RST return on taxable sales and equipment.

From the Desk of Your Tax Consultant

There is no generic Canadian tax return — there is a Manitoba return filed from Dauphin, with everything that implies. Here is what it implies, from a tax consultant who deals with it daily.

New Dauphin owners often assume the sales-tax setup is a formality. It isn't. Manitoba charges 5% GST plus a 7% Retail Sales Tax filed separately with Manitoba Finance. RST is not recoverable as an input tax credit. The businesses that internalize this early keep their books clean; the rest generate correction work.

The question is never just what the corporation owes — it is what the corporation should do before year-end so the answer is sensible. Manitoba applies a 0% small business rate, so the first $500,000 of active business income is taxed at only the 9% federal rate. That is the constraint a tax consultant plans around for Dauphin companies.

Hiring in Dauphin adds one more line to the payroll setup. The Health and Post-Secondary Education Tax Levy applies once annual payroll exceeds $2,250,000.

Do any of Manitoba Small Business Venture Capital Tax Credit, Manitoba Manufacturing Investment Tax Credit, Manitoba Interactive Digital Media Tax Credit touch your business? The honest answer: it depends entirely on your circumstances. What we can say from the files we see is that Manitoba owners far more often skip the question than receive a no. Every Dauphin file we prepare starts from that reality.

Because Dauphin’s economy leans toward agriculture, manufacturing, transportation and financial services, those are the engagements we prepare most for local clients.

Documents move on secure cloud software, the fee is the same across Canada, and payment follows your approval. That single point drives more Dauphin conversations than any other.

Dauphin Tax & Accounting Case Studies

See how our expert Dauphin tax and accounting services have helped Canadian businesses save money and stay compliant.

Case Study 1

Reorganisation Completed Tax-Deferred, $51,000 Saved Each Year — Moving and Storage Company, Dauphin

A moving and storage company in Dauphin, Manitoba had outgrown its structure. The visible cost was instalments still calculated on a year the business had long outgrown. The reorganisation completed tax-deferred and saves $51,000 a year.

A moving and storage company in Dauphin, Manitoba had outgrown the structure it started with. Instalments still calculated on a year the business had long outgrown was the immediate problem. The longer-term one was that the structure blocked the next step. We mapped the current structure and modelled the target. Then we separated the federal GST and MB provincial sales tax streams, reconciled both to the sales ledger, and filed the corrected provincial returns. The tax-deferred elections were filed on time and the supporting valuations documented. The reorganisation completed without triggering tax, and the new structure saves approximately $51,000 a year while removing the exposure the old one carried.

Case Study 2

$685,000 Sheltered By The Lifetime Capital Gains Exemption — Metal Fabrication Business, Dauphin

A metal fabrication business in Dauphin, Manitoba was preparing to sell. However, a shareholder loan balance that would have been picked up as income on closing disqualified the shares. Purification sheltered $685,000 under the exemption.

A metal fabrication business in Dauphin, Manitoba had an offer on the table and 30 months to close. The shares did not qualify for the capital gains exemption. A shareholder loan balance that would have been picked up as income on closing was part of the reason. We purified the corporation so the shares met the qualifying tests. We assessed and claimed Manitoba Manufacturing Investment Tax Credit alongside the federal return. All of it was done well ahead of the closing date. The sale closed on schedule with $685,000 sheltered by the lifetime capital gains exemption across the shareholders.

Case Study 3

Audit Defence Closed In 3 Weeks, $30,500 Cleared — Oilfield Services Company, Dauphin

An oilfield services company in Dauphin, Manitoba was under review. The issue was a provincial payroll levy that had never been registered for or remitted. The file closed in 3 weeks with $30,500 of proposed tax cleared.

An oilfield services company in Dauphin, Manitoba was selected for review. A provincial payroll levy that had never been registered for or remitted had shown up in the CRA's automated matching. The proposed adjustment on its MB tax and accounting file came to $30,500. We assessed and claimed Manitoba Small Business Venture Capital Tax Credit alongside the federal return. Every figure in the response traced to a source record the auditor could verify without asking a second question. The review closed with no change. $30,500 of proposed tax came off the table, and the documentation now in place makes the next review a short one.

Case Study 4

Remuneration Review Saved $44,000 Across Corporate And Personal Returns — Bus and Coach Operator, Dauphin

A remuneration review at a bus and coach operator in Dauphin, Manitoba saved $44,000 across the corporate and personal returns. It found input tax credits claimed against MB provincial tax, which is not recoverable the way GST is.

Nothing was wrong at a bus and coach operator in Dauphin, Manitoba. The filings were on time and accurate. What they were not was planned. Input tax credits claimed against MB provincial tax, which is not recoverable the way GST is had never been reviewed. We registered the provincial payroll account, caught up the outstanding remittances, and applied for relief on the penalty. We ran the numbers across both the corporate and personal returns, so the saving was real rather than deferred into someone else's hands. $44,000 came off the combined corporate and personal tax bill, and the structure holds for future years without further work.

Case Study 5

17 Months Reconciled And $18,000 Of Input Tax Recovered — Furniture Manufacturer, Dauphin

17 months of records at a furniture manufacturer in Dauphin, Manitoba had never been reconciled. That left provincial sales tax collected but never remitted on the separate MB return. Rebuilding recovered $18,000.

Nothing reconciled at a furniture manufacturer in Dauphin, Manitoba. Every filing started with 17 months of cleanup. The file was carrying provincial sales tax collected but never remitted on the separate MB return. We rebuilt from source rather than correcting on top of the existing file. We recalculated the corporate tax at the 9% combined small business rate and rebased the instalments on the current year. Then we set the routine that keeps it clean. 17 months reconciled to the bank. The close now takes 8 days, and $18,000 of previously unclaimable input tax was recovered in the process.

Case Study 6

Desk-Review Assessment Of $130,000 Vacated — Logging Contractor, Dauphin

A desk review assessed a logging contractor in Dauphin, Manitoba $130,000. The dispute was over instalments still calculated on a year the business had long outgrown. Producing the records vacated the assessment.

A logging contractor in Dauphin, Manitoba was carrying $130,000 of penalties and interest. The charges arose from instalments still calculated on a year the business had long outgrown. Much of that amount accumulated during a period the CRA itself had delayed. We separated the federal GST and MB provincial sales tax streams, reconciled both to the sales ledger, and filed the corrected provincial returns. We framed the relief application on the specific grounds the CRA guidelines recognise rather than on general hardship. The assessment was vacated. $130,000 came off the account, and the documentation now on file makes the same position straightforward to defend next time.

Your Dauphin Tax Filing Questions, Answered

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does a tax accountant in Dauphin cost?

Corporate tax filing starts at $90 and monthly bookkeeping at $10, the same fixed rates we charge nationally. Dauphin businesses pay no location premium, and the quote is agreed before work starts. See the full pricing breakdown.

Do I need to meet my Dauphin accountant in person?

No. Everything runs through a secure portal with e-signatures, so documents never travel by mail and nothing is lost in transit. Clients across Dauphin complete an entire filing without a single in-person meeting, though calls are always available.

Which tax deadlines apply to Dauphin businesses?

Corporate T2 returns are due six months after your fiscal year-end, with any balance owing payable within two or three months depending on your CCPC status. Personal T1 returns are due April 30, and June 15 for the self-employed. GST/HST depends on your filing frequency.

Can you handle both my corporate and personal returns?

Yes, and doing both together is where most of the planning value sits. Salary-versus-dividend mix, shareholder loans and RRSP room interact across the two returns, and treating them separately is how owners overpay. Explore all our services.

What if my books are behind by several years?

That is routine work for us. We rebuild the ledger year by year, file the outstanding returns in sequence, and where eligible apply to the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties and interest.

Are you taking on new clients in Dauphin?

Yes, we are actively taking on new corporate and personal clients in Dauphin, including mid-season transfers from another accountant. Transferring is straightforward and we request the prior files on your behalf.

What industries do you serve in Dauphin?

Construction, healthcare and medical practices, restaurants, e-commerce, real estate, transportation, professional services, technology startups and registered non-profits. Each carries a distinct deduction profile. See our industry specialisms.

How do I switch to your firm from my current accountant?

Tell us who currently holds your files and we handle the professional handover, including requesting working papers and prior-year returns. There is no gap in your compliance and no awkward conversation required on your side.

What is the deadline for filing corporate taxes in Dauphin?

In Dauphin, corporate tax returns (T2) are due within six months of the corporation's fiscal year-end. If you owe tax, the balance must be paid within 2 or 3 months of the year-end.

How much do tax accountants in Dauphin charge?

Our personal tax filing services in Dauphin start from $25, and corporate tax returns start from $90, offered under our 100% Risk-Free price match guarantee.

Does your accounting firm handle CRA audits for clients in Dauphin?

Yes! We provide direct CRA audit defense and representation services for businesses and individuals throughout Manitoba and across Canada.

Do you have an office in Dauphin?

We do not have a storefront in Dauphin. Documents are exchanged on secure cloud software and everything is signed electronically, and the fee is the same in Dauphin as anywhere else in Canada, with no location premium. Our head office is at 381 Front St W, Toronto, and you can reach the team on +1-416-619-0068.

What sales tax does a Dauphin business charge?

Manitoba charges 5% GST plus a 7% Retail Sales Tax filed separately with Manitoba Finance. RST is not recoverable as an input tax credit. It is usually the first correction we make on a new Dauphin file.

What should a Dauphin corporation expect at tax time?

Manitoba applies a 0% small business rate, so the first $500,000 of active business income is taxed at only the 9% federal rate. Most Dauphin owners meet this rule for the first time at their first year-end with us.

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

Multiply the assessed value of the property by the tax rate for its property class. Assessment is set by a provincial assessment authority on its own cycle and increases are often phased in, so the value lags the market. The rate is set each year by the municipality out of its budget, with an education portion added by the province. Both figures appear on your notice, which is why identical homes in different municipalities carry different bills.

Pay through your bank's online banking by adding the CRA as a payee and choosing the right account and year, through My Payment with a debit card, by pre-authorised debit scheduled in My Account, by credit card through a third-party provider that charges its own fee, or at a bank counter with a remittance voucher. For 2025 personal returns the payment deadline was 30 April 2026, including for the self-employed, and interest runs daily on anything unpaid after that.

Several NETFILE certified programs are free to use for straightforward returns, and the CRA publishes the certified list each filing season. If your income is modest and your return is simple, a free volunteer tax clinic can prepare and file it for you. Some people also receive a CRA invitation to file through a simplified phone or digital service. Free tools cover most employment and pension returns; self-employment, rental or foreign income usually needs more.

Claim everything you are entitled to, and file on time. Gather every slip and receipt, use My Account to confirm the CRA holds the same slips you do, and claim RRSP contributions, tuition, medical expenses, child care, moving costs and employment expenses where they apply. Couples should compare who claims transferable credits and pooled expenses. If you are self-employed, deduct real business costs on the T2125. Contributing to an RRSP or FHSA before the deadline reduces taxable income directly.

File T5 slips and the related summary electronically through the CRA's internet file transfer or web forms service, reached from My Business Account, and give each recipient a copy of their own slip. The filing is due by the end of February for the previous calendar year. Web forms suits a handful of slips; internet file transfer suits an XML file exported from accounting software. Late slips draw a penalty that scales with slip count and lateness.

Compare the tax deducted shown on your slips, plus any instalments, with the total tax payable on your notice of assessment. If what you paid exceeds what you owed, the difference comes back as a refund and the notice shows it. Common causes are working only part of the year, two employers each withholding as though they were your only one, or credits and deductions you did not claim. Missed claims can be corrected with a T1-ADJ.

Income tax on a business is charged on net profit, meaning revenue less reasonable business expenses, not on gross sales. A sole proprietor reports that on the T2125 and a corporation on its T2. Other taxes do not work that way: GST/HST applies to your taxable sales whatever the profit, and payroll remittances follow wages paid. A business loss can usually be applied against other income or carried forward to a later year.

There is no single figure, because tax is built band by band on your own income. For 2026 the federal rates start at 14% and rise through 20.5%, 26% and 29% to 33%, each applying only to the income inside that band, and your province adds its own brackets on top. A federal basic personal amount of $16,452 for 2026 shelters the first slice, tapering to $14,829 at higher net income. Deductions and credits reduce the result further.

Sign in to CRA My Account and open the tax year: a filed return shows as received or assessed, and the notice of assessment appears there once processing finishes. Filing software also keeps a confirmation number from the moment it transmitted the return. If nothing appears in My Account and no notice arrived by post, the return was most likely never filed, and it can still be filed now. The CRA's individual enquiries line can confirm what is on record.

Payroll withholding is only an estimate. Your employer taxes each pay period as though the year continues unchanged, using nothing but the credits on your TD1. Anything payroll cannot take into account — RRSP contributions, donations, medical costs, a second job, a mid-year job change — settles only when you file, and a bonus can leave a gap as well, because the tax withheld on it is only an estimate of what the extra income will ultimately attract. Over-withholding gives you a refund; under-withholding leaves a balance owing. A refund is your own money coming back.

Manitoba's retail sales tax is 7% for 2026, charged on top of the 5% federal GST, so a taxable sale carries 12% in total. You register separately for each, with the CRA for GST and Manitoba Finance for RST, and file on different schedules. Retail sales tax paid on business purchases is generally a cost rather than a recoverable credit, unlike GST input tax credits, so it feeds straight into your pricing.

Periodic spousal support paid under a written separation agreement or a court order is taxable to the person who receives it and deductible to the person who pays it. Child support under most current orders is neither taxable nor deductible, and lump-sum settlements generally attract no deduction. Both former spouses should report matching figures and keep the order on file, because mismatched claims are a common review trigger.
