Lacombe: Our Analysis

Lacombe's agricultural research heritage sits amid working grain and cattle country. Farm files use livestock deferral elections in dry years, machinery-heavy capital cost allowance, and intergenerational rollovers with the qualified farm property exemption; research professionals add consulting income to employment returns. Incorporated operators pay about 11% combined under Alberta's 2% small business rate, filing the AT1 beside the T2.

Practitioner Notes on Lacombe

Before we quote a fee or open a file, we walk Lacombe clients through the same provincial checklist. This page is that checklist, written out.

Before payroll, before year-end, before anything with a deadline attached: sort out sales tax. Alberta has no provincial sales tax, so only the 5% federal GST applies. This is the lowest consumption tax burden in Canada and simplifies filing considerably. We treat this as the entry ticket for doing business in Lacombe.

What does incorporating actually change here? The provincial half of the answer: Alberta applies a 2% small business rate and an 8% general rate, the lowest general corporate rate in the country. We revisit it with every Lacombe client before their fiscal year closes, because the right moves have to happen before the year-end date, not after.

Before a Lacombe business runs its first pay cycle, we check the provincial levy position. Alberta levies no employer health tax or provincial payroll tax. Knowing where you stand against it determines how the payroll accounts get set up.

When we take over a Alberta file, an early question is what was never claimed. Alberta Innovation Employment Grant, Alberta Agri-Processing Investment Tax Credit — these come up in that review again and again, not because everyone qualifies, but because almost no one had checked. That is the backdrop for every Lacombe engagement we take on.

Because Lacombe’s economy leans toward energy, agriculture, logistics, construction and technology, those are the engagements we prepare most for local clients.

Documents move on secure cloud software, the fee is the same across Canada, and payment follows your approval. Lacombe clients feel this one directly on the first return we file together.

Lacombe Tax & Accounting Case Studies

Case Study 1

$45,000 Of Working Capital Freed From The Tax Cycle — Mechanical and HVAC Contractor, Lacombe

A mechanical and HVAC contractor in Lacombe, Alberta was profitable and permanently short of cash. Behind the gap sat instalments still calculated on a year the business had long outgrown. Restructuring the tax cycle freed $45,000.

A mechanical and HVAC contractor in Lacombe, Alberta was profitable on paper and short of cash every month. Instalments still calculated on a year the business had long outgrown explained most of the gap. We recalculated the corporate tax at the 11% combined small business rate and rebased the instalments on the current year. We also built a thirteen-week cash view so tax payments stopped competing with payroll for the same dollars. $45,000 was released back into working capital. Remittances have been on time every period since, and the forecast shows the tax outflow before it lands.

Case Study 2

8-Week Turnaround Beat The Deadline And Saved $142,000 — Logging Contractor, Lacombe

An 8-week rebuild at a logging contractor in Lacombe, Alberta got the filing in with 8 days to spare. That avoided $142,000 in penalties.

A logging contractor in Lacombe, Alberta was weeks away from the deadline for its AB tax and accounting file. Behind that sat a registration threshold crossed on out-of-province sales that nobody was tracking. The exposure if the date slipped was around $142,000. We registered for the out-of-province obligations that had been triggered, then reconciled the GST filings to the sales ledger province by province. The filing went in complete rather than provisional, so there was no amended return to follow. Filed with 8 days to spare. $142,000 in late-filing penalties avoided, and the working papers are ready for the following year.

Case Study 3

Holding Structure Added, $58,000 Saved Annually — Custom Home Builder, Lacombe

A custom home builder in Lacombe, Alberta needed a holding structure. It had to deal with sector-specific exposure the previous accountant had not seen before. The reorganisation was tax-neutral and removed $58,000 of annual exposure.

The structure at a custom home builder in Lacombe, Alberta needed fixing. The file was carrying sector-specific exposure the previous accountant had not seen before. Every option for fixing it ran through a reorganisation that had to be done without triggering tax. We worked with the client's lawyer. Together, we assessed and claimed Alberta Agri-Processing Investment Tax Credit alongside the federal return. We also prepared the elections, resolutions and valuations the structure needed to stand up. The structure now matches the business. Annual saving of $58,000, and the reorganisation itself was tax-neutral.

Case Study 4

Intergenerational Transfer Completed With $335,000 Deferred — Solar Installation Company, Lacombe

A family transfer at a solar installation company in Lacombe, Alberta would have been fully taxable. The reason was no valuation on file to support the price the parties had agreed. Restructuring deferred $335,000.

A generational transfer at a solar installation company in Lacombe, Alberta had been discussed for years without a plan. No valuation on file to support the price the parties had agreed meant the transfer as contemplated would have been fully taxable. We assessed and claimed Alberta Innovation Employment Grant alongside the federal return. We sequenced the steps so each one was complete and documented before the next depended on it. $335,000 of tax was deferred through the transfer, and the successor generation took over a corporation whose records stood up to review.

Case Study 5

$88,000 Proposed Adjustment Withdrawn In Full — Concrete and Forming Crew, Lacombe

A concrete and forming crew in Lacombe, Alberta faced an $88,000 proposed reassessment. It came after payroll obligations from another province applied to local staff by an out-of-province provider. We rebuilt the documentation and the adjustment was withdrawn in full.

A concrete and forming crew in Lacombe, Alberta received a proposal letter opening a review of its AB tax and accounting file. The CRA had identified payroll obligations from another province applied to local staff by an out-of-province provider. It proposed an adjustment of $88,000, with 30 days to respond. We treated the response as an evidence exercise rather than an argument. We recalculated the corporate tax at the 11% combined small business rate and rebased the instalments on the current year. We then indexed every supporting document against the specific line the auditor had questioned. The proposed adjustment was withdrawn in full — all $88,000 of it. The file closed in 11 weeks with no change to the assessed amounts and no penalty.

Case Study 6

$32,000 Saved By Correcting What Prior Filings Had Missed — Cattle Ranch, Lacombe

A second opinion for a cattle ranch in Lacombe, Alberta recovered $32,000 a year. It found instalments still calculated on a year the business had long outgrown in prior filings.

A cattle ranch in Lacombe, Alberta asked for a second opinion on its AB tax and accounting file. That followed three years of rising tax. The review found instalments still calculated on a year the business had long outgrown. We built the comparison first: current structure against two alternatives. Then we registered for the out-of-province obligations that had been triggered, then reconciled the GST filings to the sales ledger province by province. First-year saving of $32,000, with the same benefit recurring. Every position taken is documented and supported in the file.

Lacombe Tax Filing Questions We Hear Most Often

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does a tax accountant in Lacombe cost?

Corporate tax filing starts at $90 and monthly bookkeeping at $10, the same fixed rates we charge nationally. Lacombe businesses pay no location premium, and the quote is agreed before work starts. See the full pricing breakdown.

Do I need to meet my Lacombe accountant in person?

No. Everything runs through a secure portal with e-signatures, so documents never travel by mail and nothing is lost in transit. Clients across Lacombe complete an entire filing without a single in-person meeting, though calls are always available.

Which tax deadlines apply to Lacombe businesses?

Corporate T2 returns are due six months after your fiscal year-end, with any balance owing payable within two or three months depending on your CCPC status. Personal T1 returns are due April 30, and June 15 for the self-employed. GST/HST depends on your filing frequency.

Can you handle both my corporate and personal returns?

Yes, and doing both together is where most of the planning value sits. Salary-versus-dividend mix, shareholder loans and RRSP room interact across the two returns, and treating them separately is how owners overpay. Explore all our services.

What if my books are behind by several years?

That is routine work for us. We rebuild the ledger year by year, file the outstanding returns in sequence, and where eligible apply to the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties and interest.

Are you taking on new clients in Lacombe?

Yes, we are actively taking on new corporate and personal clients in Lacombe, including mid-season transfers from another accountant. Transferring is straightforward and we request the prior files on your behalf.

What industries do you serve in Lacombe?

Construction, healthcare and medical practices, restaurants, e-commerce, real estate, transportation, professional services, technology startups and registered non-profits. Each carries a distinct deduction profile. See our industry specialisms.

How do I switch to your firm from my current accountant?

Tell us who currently holds your files and we handle the professional handover, including requesting working papers and prior-year returns. There is no gap in your compliance and no awkward conversation required on your side.

What is the deadline for filing corporate taxes in Lacombe?

In Lacombe, corporate tax returns (T2) are due within six months of the corporation's fiscal year-end. If you owe tax, the balance must be paid within 2 or 3 months of the year-end.

How much do tax accountants in Lacombe charge?

Our personal tax filing services in Lacombe start from $25, and corporate tax returns start from $90, offered under our 100% Risk-Free price match guarantee.

Does your accounting firm handle CRA audits for clients in Lacombe?

Yes! We provide direct CRA audit defense and representation services for businesses and individuals throughout Alberta and across Canada.

Do you have an office in Lacombe?

We do not have a storefront in Lacombe. Documents are exchanged on secure cloud software and everything is signed electronically, and the fee is the same in Lacombe as anywhere else in Canada, with no location premium. Our head office is at 381 Front St W, Toronto, and you can reach the team on +1-416-619-0068.

How does sales tax work for businesses in Lacombe?

Alberta has no provincial sales tax, so only the 5% federal GST applies. This is the lowest consumption tax burden in Canada and simplifies filing considerably. That single point drives more Lacombe conversations than any other.

What should a Lacombe corporation expect at tax time?

Alberta applies a 2% small business rate and an 8% general rate, the lowest general corporate rate in the country. Most Lacombe owners meet this rule for the first time at their first year-end with us.

People Also Ask About Lacombe

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

For the 2025 tax year the filing and payment deadline is 30 April 2026. If you or your spouse were self-employed, the filing deadline moves to 15 June 2026, but any balance owing is still due 30 April 2026. Interest starts the day after the payment deadline, and a late-filing penalty applies on top when a return with a balance owing is filed late. File on time even with nothing owing, because income-tested benefits are recalculated from the filed return.

Canadian income tax is built up in layers. You total your income for the year, subtract the deductions you qualify for to arrive at taxable income, then apply the federal brackets and your province's brackets to that figure. Each bracket rate applies only to the income sitting inside it, so earning more never retaxes the dollars below. Non-refundable credits, starting with the basic personal amount, come off the tax afterwards. Look up the CRA bracket table for the tax year you are filing.

Pay through your bank's online banking by adding the CRA as a payee and choosing the right account and year, through My Payment with a debit card, by pre-authorised debit scheduled in My Account, by credit card through a third-party provider that charges its own fee, or at a bank counter with a remittance voucher. For 2025 personal returns the payment deadline was 30 April 2026, including for the self-employed, and interest runs daily on anything unpaid after that.

There is no single percentage. Canada uses graduated brackets, so the rate climbs as income climbs and each rate applies only to the income falling inside its own bracket. Your total combines a federal bracket with your province's bracket and is then reduced by credits, which is why two people on the same salary in different provinces pay different amounts. The share withheld from a paycheque also covers CPP or QPP and EI. Check the CRA bracket table for the year concerned.

For 2026 the CPP contribution rate is 5.95% for the employee and 5.95% for the employer, charged on pensionable earnings between the $3,500 basic exemption and the year's maximum pensionable earnings of $74,600. That caps each side at $4,230.45. Self-employed people pay both halves, up to $8,460.90 for 2026. Earnings above $74,600 attract a separate second contribution instead. The CRA resets these amounts every January, so always check the current year.

Net tax owing is your total tax payable for the year minus tax already withheld at source and certain credits, so it is roughly the balance left to pay when the return is filed. The CRA uses it to decide whether you must pay quarterly instalments, comparing the current year against the two before it. Cross the limit and instalment reminders follow. The current threshold and the calculation are set out on the CRA's instalment payments page.

Total your income, subtract deductions such as RRSP contributions and child care, apply your credits, then compare the resulting tax with the tax already withheld on your slips and any instalments paid. Tax software runs that comparison as you enter slips and shows a running balance before you submit. After filing, the notice of assessment confirms the figure, and CRA My Account shows the refund or amount owing and where it stands.

Sign in to CRA My Account and check the uncashed cheques list, your balance, and whether any returns are still outstanding, since a refund is only issued once a return is assessed. Missing returns also stop benefit and credit payments. An old CRA cheque never expires; you ask for it to be reissued. Forgotten bank, insurance or pension balances sit with provincial unclaimed-property registries rather than the CRA, so check those separately.

Sometimes. The CRA pays refund interest when it holds your overpayment beyond the point its rules set, broadly the latest of the day after the balance-due date, the day you filed the return, and the day the overpayment arose. No interest is paid on a refund issued promptly after an on-time return, and an online return is usually processed in about two weeks. Refund interest received is itself taxable income.

Tax compliance status describes whether every return you are required to file has been filed and every balance paid. The CRA does not publish a score, but your filing and balance history sits in My Account or My Business Account. Lenders, government contract programs and some licensing bodies ask for confirmation, and the CRA can verify compliance on request. Clear unfiled returns and arrears first, because a single missing return blocks confirmation.

Yes. CRA My Account holds your notices of assessment and reassessment, lets you view returns for a number of prior years, and lists the slips the CRA received, such as T4, T4A and T5. Keep in mind these are the CRA's records of what was assessed, not the file your software produced, so figures can differ if the return was adjusted. Records supporting a return should be kept six years from the end of the last tax year they relate to.

In most Canadian municipalities the property tax year is the calendar year, so the levy covers the whole of that year even when the bill arrives months later. Assessment runs on its own cycle: a provincial assessment authority values your property as of a fixed valuation date, and that value is then applied for one or more tax years. When a property changes hands mid-year, the lawyers adjust the tax between buyer and seller on closing.
