ERP and Accounting System Selection: Our Analysis

A fractional CFO typically costs a fraction of a $200,000-plus full-time hire while still covering forecasting, banking and pricing decisions. We quote erp and accounting system selection as one budget-friendly fixed price — the budget-friendly alternative to hourly billing.

ERP and Accounting System Selection: Notes From Our Practice

After years of preparing erp and accounting system selection files week in and week out, a tax filing specialist starts to see the same handful of decisions shape almost every outcome. These notes cover the ones that matter for ERP and Accounting System Selection.

First, the rule that sorts straightforward files from complicated ones: Working capital, not profit, is what constrains growth. A business scaling receivables faster than it collects them runs out of cash while the income statement looks healthy.

Then comes the detail that separates a clean file from an expensive one: Bank covenants are tested on ratios, not on profit. A business can be comfortably profitable and still breach a working-capital covenant. One more rule deserves attention, mostly because ignoring it is expensive in ways that only show up later. A fractional CFO covers forecasting, banking relationships and pricing decisions for a fraction of what a full-time hire costs.

The common thread in these rules is that they punish assumptions and reward verification. Engaging a tax filing specialist for erp and accounting system selection is, at bottom, a way of replacing assumptions with checked answers. The engagement goes fastest when last year’s filings and the current ledger arrive together.

We keep the commercial side simple. The fee is fixed and agreed in advance, the file is reviewed with you before filing, and you pay after the service — in that order, every time.

ERP and Accounting System Selection Tax & Accounting Case Studies

See how our expert ERP and Accounting System Selection tax and accounting services have helped Canadian businesses save money and stay compliant.

Case Study 1

$665,000 Sheltered By The Lifetime Capital Gains Exemption — Corporation Facing Covenant Test, Toronto

A corporation approaching a covenant test date in Toronto, Ontario was preparing to sell. However, a shareholder loan balance that would have been picked up as income on closing disqualified the shares. Purification sheltered $665,000 under the exemption.

A corporation approaching a covenant test date in Toronto, Ontario had an offer on the table and 22 months to close. The shares did not qualify for the capital gains exemption. A shareholder loan balance that would have been picked up as income on closing was part of the reason. We purified the corporation so the shares met the qualifying tests. We added the balance sheet and a cash view to the monthly package, so the owner saw working capital move rather than only profit. All of it was done well ahead of the closing date. The sale closed on schedule with $665,000 sheltered by the lifetime capital gains exemption across the shareholders.

Case Study 2

Collections Halted And $56,000 Cut From A 5-Year Backlog — Practice Adding Partners, Lethbridge

Collections had begun against a professional practice adding partners in Lethbridge, Alberta over 5 years of unfiled returns. Bringing them current cut $56,000 from the balance.

By the time a professional practice adding partners in Lethbridge, Alberta called, 5 years were outstanding. The CRA had assessed on estimates. Underneath it sat a covenant breach discovered only when the bank called. We reconstructed the records year by year. We separated customer prepayments from earned revenue in the reporting, so the cash position and the tax position were visible at the same time. Each filing replaced an arbitrary assessment with a real one. The account is current. Filing on real numbers rather than CRA estimates reduced the balance by $56,000, and a relief application addressed part of the accumulated interest.

Case Study 3

Corporate Structure Rebuilt For $15,500 Of Annual Savings — Pre-Raise Technology Company, Guelph

The structure at a technology company preparing to raise in Guelph, Ontario no longer fitted the business. A monthly report that stopped at the income statement, with no balance sheet and no cash view showed it. Rebuilding it saves $15,500 a year.

The structure at a technology company preparing to raise in Guelph, Ontario dated from years earlier. It had been set up for a business that no longer existed. A monthly report that stopped at the income statement, with no balance sheet and no cash view had become expensive. We modelled the covenant ratios monthly and restructured the debt before the next test date rather than after it. The reorganisation used the rollover provisions rather than a taxable transfer, so no tax fell due on the restructuring itself. $15,500 of annual saving, achieved on a tax-deferred basis. The minute book, elections and valuations are all in the file.

Case Study 4

Desk-Review Assessment Of $30,500 Vacated — First Finance Hire, Kelowna

A desk review assessed a company hiring its first finance staff in Kelowna, British Columbia $30,500. The dispute was over an owner making hiring decisions on last quarter’s bank balance. Producing the records vacated the assessment.

A company hiring its first finance staff in Kelowna, British Columbia was carrying $30,500 of penalties and interest. The charges arose from an owner making hiring decisions on last quarter’s bank balance. Much of that amount accumulated during a period the CRA itself had delayed. We built a rolling thirteen-week cash-flow model, tightened collections, and renegotiated supplier terms so the growth stopped consuming the bank balance. We framed the relief application on the specific grounds the CRA guidelines recognise rather than on general hardship. The assessment was vacated. $30,500 came off the account, and the documentation now on file makes the same position straightforward to defend next time.

Case Study 5

$55,000 Late-Filing Penalty Cancelled On Relief Application — Contractor Scaling Bids, Barrie

A construction company bidding larger contracts in Barrie, Ontario had already been penalised. The issue was revenue up 40% year over year and a bank balance that kept falling. A relief application cancelled $55,000 of that penalty.

A construction company bidding larger contracts in Barrie, Ontario had already missed one deadline and was about to miss a second. Behind it sat revenue up 40% year over year and a bank balance that kept falling. A penalty of $55,000 was accruing. We split the work into what had to happen before the deadline and what could follow it. Then we set a quarterly tax provision, so the instalments and the year-end balance were funded before they came due. The outstanding return was accepted as filed, and the taxpayer relief application cancelled $55,000 of the penalty already assessed on the earlier year.

Case Study 6

Month-End Close Cut From 6 Weeks To 9 Days — Succession-Planning Family Business, Moncton

Closing the books at a family business planning succession in Moncton, New Brunswick took 6 weeks. The cause was a growth plan with no forecast behind it and no financing lined up. It now takes 9 days.

The accounting file at a family business planning succession in Moncton, New Brunswick had a weak foundation. It was built on a growth plan with no forecast behind it and no financing lined up. The year-end had taken 6 weeks each of the last three years. We traced each borrowing to what it actually funded and kept the interest deduction on the portion used to earn business income. We also moved the reconciliations into the monthly cycle, so the year-end stopped being a rebuild. The file reconciles. Month-end closes in 9 days instead of 6 weeks, and the year-end is a review rather than a reconstruction.

Straight Answers on ERP and Accounting System Selection Filing

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does ERP and Accounting System Selection cost in Canada?

ERP and Accounting System Selection starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for ERP and Accounting System Selection?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does ERP and Accounting System Selection take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We serve clients in every province and territory at the same fixed fees, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for ERP and Accounting System Selection?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes ERP and Accounting System Selection different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in ERP and Accounting System Selection services?

Our erp and accounting system selection services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with ERP and Accounting System Selection services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

What goes wrong most often when owners handle erp and accounting system selection themselves?

Here is what the rules actually say, stripped of the folklore: Bank covenants are tested on ratios, not on profit. A business can be comfortably profitable and still breach a working-capital covenant. Our role as your tax consultant is to apply that cleanly to your situation rather than to a hypothetical one.

What will you need from me to get erp and accounting system selection started?

We get this one a lot, and the answer is more concrete than people expect. Working capital, not profit, is what constrains growth. A business scaling receivables faster than it collects them runs out of cash while the income statement looks healthy. Bring your documents and we will show you where it lands in your numbers.

ERP and Accounting System Selection: The Questions People Search

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

File a T1 return for the year, sending it electronically with CRA-certified software or mailing a paper return. Gather your slips and receipts first and check them against the ones listed in My Account. For the 2025 tax year the filing and payment deadline was 30 April 2026, or 15 June 2026 to file if you or your spouse were self-employed, with payment still due 30 April 2026. CRA online filing for 2025 returns closes 29 January 2027.

Most people pay through online or telephone banking, adding the CRA as a payee and choosing the exact account and year, such as a personal balance owing or an instalment. The alternatives are CRA My Payment with a debit card, pre-authorised debit scheduled in My Account, a credit card or e-transfer through a third-party provider that charges its own fee, or paying at your bank with a remittance voucher. For the 2025 tax year the balance was due 30 April 2026.

Paper returns go to the CRA tax centre that serves your province or territory of residence, not to one national address. The correct address is printed in the paper return package and listed on canada.ca under mailing addresses for individual returns, and it differs for non-residents and for business returns. Filing electronically is much faster: for the 2025 tax year the CRA aims to issue a refund on an online return in about two weeks, against a considerably longer standard on paper.

There is no single percentage. Your employer applies the federal withholding table plus the table for your province or territory, using pay frequency, your annual rate of pay and the amounts claimed on your federal and provincial TD1 forms, then adds CPP contributions and EI premiums until the annual maximums are met. Pension contributions, union dues and benefit premiums come off separately. The CRA's Payroll Deductions Online Calculator reproduces the exact figures shown on your stub.

Provincial and territorial tax is worked out separately on the same taxable income and then added to your federal tax; the two sets of brackets never merge. So for 2026 an Ontario resident pays the federal rate for their band plus Ontario's rate for its band, and the two added together give the combined marginal rate. Take the current top combined figure from the CRA's Ontario tax page rather than quoting it from memory. Quebec residents file a separate provincial return; everyone else files one return covering both.

For the 2025 tax year, most people had to file and pay by 30 April 2026. If you or your spouse were self-employed, the filing deadline moved to 15 June 2026, but any balance owing was still due 30 April 2026. Corporations work on their own fiscal year: the T2 is due six months after year end, with the balance due two months after year end, or three months for an eligible CCPC claiming the small business deduction.

Line 23400 is net income before adjustments. Start from total income on line 15000, then subtract the deductions claimed in the next section of the return, which total on line 23300 - items such as RRSP contributions, union dues, child care, moving expenses and employment expenses. The result feeds line 23500 for any social benefits repayment, giving net income on line 23600. Tax software calculates it once your entries are in.

All of it, at your own marginal rate rather than a special tip rate. Tips are added to your other income, so the tax depends on the bracket that income falls into: federal rates for 2026 start at 14% and rise through 20.5%, 26% and 29% to 33%, with provincial tax on top. Controlled tips paid through payroll already have income tax, CPP and EI withheld; tips received directly you report yourself.

Property tax funds municipal services: roads, water and waste collection, transit, fire and police, parks, libraries and local administration. In most provinces the bill also carries a separate education portion collected for the province's school system. None of it goes to the CRA, and it is not income tax. Property tax on the home you live in is not deductible on your T1, while property tax on a rental or a business property is a deductible expense.

Tips you pay are deductible on the same terms as the expense they attach to. A tip on a business meal forms part of the meal cost and falls under the same partial deduction limit that applies to meals and entertainment. A tip to a courier, a mover or a tradesperson serving the business is fully deductible if it is reasonable and recorded. Tips you receive are taxable income and must be reported even when paid in cash.

The GST/HST credit is paid quarterly and there is no fixed clock time. A direct deposit is released on the payment date and most banks post it that morning, though some show it overnight before and others later in the day. Cheques take longer in the mail. The year's payment dates are on the CRA's benefit payment dates page, and My Account shows your next amount. Wait a few business days before reporting a missing payment.

Investing retained profits defers personal tax rather than avoiding it: the corporation pays tax first, and you pay personal tax when the money comes out as salary or dividends. Investment income inside the corporation is taxed at a high rate with a refundable portion, and passive earnings shrink the federal small business deduction. For the 2025 and 2026 tax years the federal business limit falls by $5 for every $1 of adjusted aggregate investment income above $50,000 and disappears at $150,000. Ontario and some provinces do not apply that grind.
