CRA Audit Representation: Our Analysis

CRA reviews are won on documentation: every figure filed should trace to a source document, and deadlines — 90 days for an objection — are unforgiving. A notice of objection is generally due 90 days from the notice of assessment, and individuals have a further year to apply for an extension. Because the fee is fixed and economical, the economics stay predictable whether your file is simple or messy.

Reading Between the Lines on CRA Audit Representation

If you handle CRA Audit Representation once a year, everything looks equally important. Handle it weekly, as a tax professional does, and a clear hierarchy emerges; these notes follow that hierarchy.

If you remember one thing from this page, make it this: The late-filing penalty is 5% of the balance owing plus 1% for each full month late, to a maximum of twelve months. A second late filing within three years doubles both figures. The penalty is calculated on the balance owing, so a late return with nothing owing costs nothing — which is why filing on time matters even when you cannot pay.

That rule rarely travels alone; alongside it sits another: The VDP can waive gross-negligence penalties and part of the interest on unreported income or unfiled returns — but only while the disclosure is genuinely voluntary. The window closes the moment the CRA makes contact about the issue. Acting before that letter arrives is worth real money. The last of the major rules is about when, not what. A review is won on documentation created at the time, not on explanations offered afterwards. The CRA asks for the source records behind a figure, and an unsupported claim is simply disallowed. Most reassessments we reverse are not the result of a wrong position — they are the result of a correct position with no contemporaneous paper trail behind it.

None of this requires you to become an expert — that is what engaging a tax specialist is for. What it does require is recognizing that cra audit representation will reward preparation over improvisation. The engagement goes fastest when last year’s filings and the current ledger arrive together.

You see the completed work before you pay for it — the quote is locked up front and nothing is filed until you approve it.

Case Study 1

$127,000 Late-Filing Penalty Cancelled On Relief Application — Restaurant Under Net-Worth Audit, Red Deer

Case Study 2

$435,000 Sheltered By The Lifetime Capital Gains Exemption — Employer Under Payroll Review, Victoria

A company facing a payroll trust examination in Victoria, British Columbia was preparing to sell, but no valuation on file to support the price the parties had agreed disqualified the shares. Purification sheltered $435,000 under the exemption.

Case Study 3

$19,500 Cut From The Annual Tax Bill — Assessed Shareholder, Windsor

A shareholder assessed on a taxable benefit in Windsor, Ontario was filing correctly and still overpaying because of a net-worth assessment built on unexplained deposits that were actually loan proceeds. Restructuring the position cut $19,500 from the annual bill.

Case Study 4

Desk-Review Assessment Of $129,000 Vacated — Director Facing Assessment, Moncton

A desk review assessed a business owner with a director liability assessment in Moncton, New Brunswick $129,000 over a proposal letter with a 30-day response window and no supporting records assembled. Producing the records vacated it.

Case Study 5

Incentive Review Recovered $48,000 Across 7 Open Years — Late-Objection Taxpayer, Barrie

An incentive review at a taxpayer whose objection window has closed in Barrie, Ontario found an audit conducted over the phone, with nothing on file showing what had been provided or when and recovered $48,000 across 7 open years.

Case Study 6

$64,000 Of Working Capital Freed From The Tax Cycle — Long-Term Non-Filer, Kelowna

A taxpayer with eight years of unfiled returns in Kelowna, British Columbia was profitable and permanently short of cash, with a waiver signed at the counter that kept an otherwise closed year open with no end date behind the gap. Restructuring the tax cycle freed $64,000.

CRA Audit Representation: Straight Answers to Common Questions

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does CRA Audit Representation cost in Canada?

CRA Audit Representation starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for CRA Audit Representation?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does CRA Audit Representation take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We are a cloud-based practice serving every province and territory, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for CRA Audit Representation?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes CRA Audit Representation different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in CRA Audit Representation services?

Our cra audit representation services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with CRA Audit Representation services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

What does a tax services provider actually check during cra audit representation?

Collections action can proceed while an objection is outstanding for GST/HST and payroll amounts, which is why a filed objection is not by itself protection against a bank freeze. That is the part most owners have not heard before they sit down with us, and it usually changes what they do next.

What records should I gather before starting cra audit representation?

The short answer comes straight from our working notes: A review is won on documentation created at the time, not explanations offered afterwards. An unsupported claim is simply disallowed, however correct it was. How that plays out on your file depends on the specifics, which is exactly what the engagement is for.

CRA Audit Representation: The Questions People Search

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

A tax return is the annual filing that reports your income, deductions and credits to the CRA so the final tax for the year can be settled. Payers withhold tax during the year and the return reconciles that against what you actually owe, producing either a refund or a balance to pay. For 2025 returns filed in 2026, refunds usually arrive in about two weeks for an online return, while a paper return runs on a considerably longer standard because it is handled manually.

If you owe nothing, no penalty applies, but a refund and benefit payments such as the Canada child benefit and the GST/HST credit are held up until the return is processed. If you owe, a late-filing penalty is charged and interest runs on the balance and compounds daily from the day after the due date. For the 2025 tax year the deadline was 30 April 2026. File even if you cannot pay, because the penalty is driven by filing, not payment.

Pay through your bank's online banking by adding the CRA as a payee and choosing the right account and year, through My Payment with a debit card, by pre-authorised debit scheduled in My Account, by credit card through a third-party provider that charges its own fee, or at a bank counter with a remittance voucher. For 2025 personal returns the payment deadline was 30 April 2026, including for the self-employed, and interest runs daily on anything unpaid after that.

Sign in to My Account and open the sections for filed returns and notices, where past returns, notices of assessment, slips and carry-forward amounts can be viewed, printed or saved. Without online access, ask the CRA by phone or in writing at the tax centre shown on your notice, or ask whoever prepared the return for their copy. Keep your own records six years from the end of the last tax year they relate to.

Pay it the same way you pay any CRA balance: through your financial institution's online banking using the CRA as a payee, through My Account or My Business Account, by pre-authorised debit, by debit or credit through a third-party provider, or at a bank counter with a remittance voucher. Choose the correct account and tax year so it is applied properly. If the penalty came from circumstances beyond your control, form RC4288 asks the CRA to cancel or waive it.

No. The CRA's agent-staffed phone lines run on set weekday hours, with extended hours during the personal filing season, and they close on public holidays; the exact times for each line are published on the CRA's Contact us page. Some automated telephone services, along with My Account, My Business Account and Represent a Client, are available around the clock, so you can check a balance, a benefit payment or a notice without speaking to anyone.

For your own tax information, ask for a personal information request through the federal ATIP online portal, or submit the government's request form to the CRA's access to information office. Name the years and the type of record - notices of assessment, audit working papers, collections notes - because a narrow request is answered faster. Check CRA My Account first: slips, notices and account balances are already there at no cost.

Yes. Realty tax, real property tax, real estate tax and municipal tax all describe the same annual charge your city or town levies on assessed property value. A bill often splits it into a municipal portion and an education or school portion, which is why wording differs between notices. It is not land transfer tax, which is a one-time charge on purchase, and not the federal Underused Housing Tax, which is a separate filing regime.

A rental property can reduce tax, but only through real expenses. Mortgage interest, property tax, insurance, utilities you pay, repairs, condo fees and management costs are deductible against rent, and capital cost allowance on the building may be claimed at your option. A net rental loss can offset other income. Claiming capital cost allowance often comes back later as recaptured income when you sell, and half of the eventual capital gain is taxable for 2025 and 2026.

Only in specific cases. Rent is not deductible for most Canadian tenants. It helps if you live in a province with a rent-based credit, such as Ontario's energy and property tax credit, Manitoba's renters credit or Quebec's solidarity credit, all of which use rent paid. It also helps if you run a business or work from home and can claim the share of rent tied to your workspace. Keep receipts and your landlord's details either way.

The CRA does not offer a general public chat line for tax advice. Account-specific service runs through its telephone lines, My Account or My Business Account, and mail, and the Contact the CRA page on canada.ca lists what each option covers, including automated lines for balances and benefit dates. Treat any chat window on a site that is not canada.ca as a phishing risk and never type your social insurance number into one.

A true operating lease is deducted as a current expense over the period it covers. An arrangement that is really a financed purchase is capitalised instead, and you claim capital cost allowance on the asset plus the interest portion of the payments. Passenger vehicle and some equipment leases face separate deduction limits. Accounting standards may put a lease on the balance sheet even where tax still treats it as rent, so the two figures differ. Check the CRA's business expense guidance.
