GST/HST Return Correction: Our Analysis

Registration becomes mandatory once taxable supplies pass $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters. Our gst/hst return correction engagement is priced as a economical flat fee, so the cost is known before the work starts.

A Tax Expert's Notes on GST/HST Return Correction

A few notes from the files we actually work on, because gst/hst return correction is decided by details that never make it into a brochure.

Before anything else, one rule sets the frame. Registration is mandatory once taxable supplies pass $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters. Input tax credits require documentation that scales with invoice size. Unmatched input tax credits are the first thing disallowed in a sales-tax review, and the assessment covers every period reviewed.

There is a companion rule that changes how the first one plays out in practice: The rate charged follows the customer's province, not the seller's: 13% into Ontario, 15% into New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and PEI, 14% into Nova Scotia (since 1 April 2025), 5% plus provincial tax elsewhere. A seller charging its own province's rate nationally is under-collecting on some sales and over-collecting on others, and owes the difference on the under-collected ones. One more rule deserves attention, mostly because ignoring it is expensive in ways that only show up later. British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba run their own sales taxes alongside GST, filed separately, and unlike GST they are generally not recoverable as input credits. Businesses expanding into a PST province routinely register late, and the province assesses from the date the obligation started, not the date of registration.

None of this requires you to become an expert — that is what engaging a tax preparation specialist is for. What it does require is recognizing that gst/hst return correction will reward preparation over improvisation. A productive gst/hst return correction engagement starts with paperwork, and the list below covers what to gather.

Every gst/hst return correction engagement carries the same commitments: a fixed fee settled before we begin, your sign-off before anything is filed, and payment only after the service is complete.

Case Study 1

Intergenerational Transfer Completed With $605,000 Deferred — Interprovincial Marketing Agency, Windsor

Case Study 2

Remuneration Review Saved $49,000 Across Corporate And Personal Returns — Used-Equipment Dealer, Surrey

A remuneration review at a used-equipment dealer in Surrey, British Columbia found export sales zero-rated with no shipping documentation behind them and saved $49,000 across the corporate and personal returns.

Case Study 3

$41,000 Of Penalties And Interest Cancelled On Relief — Restaurant Group, Guelph

A restaurant group in Guelph, Ontario was carrying $41,000 of penalties and interest from a commercial property purchase closed on the assumption no tax applied because the vendor was not registered. A relief application cancelled it.

Case Study 4

$123,000 Credit Claim Filed And Accepted Without Adjustment — Freight Brokerage, Burnaby

A freight brokerage in Burnaby, British Columbia had never tested its work against the eligibility rules. The resulting $123,000 claim was accepted without adjustment.

Case Study 5

Remittance Schedule Corrected, $22,000 Refunded — US-Bound Exporter, Vancouver

Remittances at a manufacturer exporting to the US in Vancouver, British Columbia were chronically late because of a sales tax account filed annually while the CRA had moved the business to quarterly. Fixing the schedule refunded $22,000.

Case Study 6

Holding Structure Added, $61,000 Saved Annually — Mixed-Supply Practice, Red Deer

A professional practice with exempt and taxable supplies in Red Deer, Alberta needed a holding structure to deal with nil periods left unfiled, which held up the refund on the one period that mattered. The reorganisation was tax-neutral and removed $61,000 of annual exposure.

GST/HST Return Correction Frequently Asked Questions

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does GST/HST Return Correction cost in Canada?

GST/HST Return Correction starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for GST/HST Return Correction?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does GST/HST Return Correction take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We are a cloud-based practice serving every province and territory, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for GST/HST Return Correction?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes GST/HST Return Correction different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in GST/HST Return Correction services?

Our gst/hst return correction services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with GST/HST Return Correction services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

What will you need from me to get gst/hst return correction started?

The honest starting point is this: Registration is mandatory once taxable supplies pass $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters. Input tax credits require documentation that scales with invoice size. Unmatched input tax credits are the first thing disallowed in a sales-tax review, and the assessment covers every period reviewed. Everything else we would tell you is tailoring, and tailoring requires seeing your file.

How do I know if my business actually needs gst/hst return correction?

The rate charged follows the customer's province, not the seller's: 13% into Ontario, 15% into New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and PEI, 14% into Nova Scotia (since 1 April 2025), 5% plus provincial tax elsewhere. A seller charging its own province's rate nationally is under-collecting on some sales and over-collecting on others, and owes the difference on the under-collected ones. We flag this early with every client it touches, because finding it out at filing time leaves you far fewer options than finding it out now.

GST/HST Return Correction: The Questions People Search

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

Canada runs three systems. The federal GST is 5% for 2026 and applies nationally. Five participating provinces fold a provincial share into one harmonised rate: 13% in Ontario, 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island, and 14% in Nova Scotia since 1 April 2025. Others add their own tax to the 5% GST, giving 12% in British Columbia and Manitoba, 11% in Saskatchewan and 14.975% in Quebec. Alberta and the territories charge 5% only.

Nova Scotia charges HST, a single combined tax covering the federal and provincial parts, collected and reported on one GST/HST return. Residents also pay Nova Scotia income tax in graduated brackets on top of federal tax, and property tax is set by the municipality rather than the province. The provincial share of the HST rate has been changed in recent years, so confirm the current combined rate on canada.ca before quoting it.

Divide the total by one plus the tax rate, then subtract that result from the total to get the tax. In Ontario at 13% HST divide by 1.13; in Nova Scotia at 14% from 1 April 2025 divide by 1.14; where only 5% GST applies divide by 1.05. Quebec is layered, because QST of 9.975% applies to the pre-GST price, giving a combined 14.975%, so divide by 1.14975 to reach the pre-tax amount.

Family allowance is the older name for Canada's monthly child benefit. The current federal programme is the Canada Child Benefit, a tax-free monthly payment to the person primarily responsible for a child, with the amount driven by the number and ages of the children and by family adjusted net income. Several provinces add their own child benefit paid in the same deposit, and Quebec pays its Family Allowance separately through Retraite Quebec.

Saskatchewan's provincial sales tax is 6% for 2026, charged alongside the 5% federal GST for a combined 11% on most goods and many services. Both taxes are applied to the same pre-tax amount, so they do not stack. PST here is a retail sales tax rather than a value-added tax, so a business generally cannot claim it back; relief comes from up-front exemptions such as goods bought for resale.

Yes, in substance. The GST is a value-added tax: registrants charge 5% on taxable sales and recover the GST/HST paid on business inputs, so tax lands only on the value added at each stage. In participating provinces it is blended into the HST, at 13% in Ontario, 14% in Nova Scotia since 1 April 2025, and 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island. Quebec runs its own QST of 9.975% alongside the 5% GST.

Net rental income counts as earned income when the CRA works out your RRSP contribution room, so a profitable rental adds to next year's room. Your room is 18% of the prior year's earned income up to the annual dollar limit, $33,810 for 2026 and $32,490 for 2025, less any pension adjustment. Rental losses reduce earned income. Check your latest notice of assessment or CRA My Account for the room actually available.

Sign in to My Account and open the returns section, where you can view and print the assessed figures for past years, download the notice of assessment, and pull every slip the CRA received for you. The prepared return itself stays with whoever filed it, so ask your preparer for the PDF. If you cannot sign in, the CRA will mail you a printout of your return information on request. Keep your own records six years.

Two groups sit outside the tax. Exempt supplies include most health and dental care, residential rent, child care, tuition at qualifying institutions and most financial services: no tax is charged and the supplier claims no input tax credits. Zero-rated supplies are taxed at 0% while credits still apply, covering basic groceries, prescription drugs, many medical devices, agricultural products and exports. Small suppliers below the registration threshold also charge nothing. The CRA guide lists the categories.

Social assistance is reported on a slip and has to be entered on your return, but an offsetting deduction normally means no tax is payable on it. It still counts in net income, so it affects the benefits and credits worked out from your return, which is the main reason to file in a year with no tax owing. Report exactly what the slip shows. Provincial income and disability support payments follow the same treatment.

Treatment turns on whether the activity is investing or a business. Occasional trades in gold, oil or a commodity ETF held for appreciation are usually capital, so one-half of the gain is taxable for 2025 and 2026. Frequent, leveraged, short-horizon trading, or trading tied to your own business, is more likely fully taxable business income, with losses fully deductible. Physical bullion sales, futures and hedges each have their own treatment, so document your intention from the start.

Check CRA My Account or the CRA mobile app first, since most refund questions are answered there without a call at all. If the refund is past the normal processing time, telephone the CRA individual tax enquiries line, whose number is published on canada.ca, with your social insurance number, date of birth and a figure from a recent return to hand. A representative you have authorised can call on your behalf.
