Executor Tax Assistance: Our Analysis

The expanded trust-reporting rules require most trusts to file a T3 with full beneficial-ownership schedules even when no tax is payable. Our executor tax assistance engagement is priced as a affordable flat fee, so the cost is known before the work starts.

What a Tax Advisor Checks First in Executor Tax Assistance

Good executor tax assistance work is mostly about sequencing: which questions to settle before which. These notes lay out the sequence a tax advisor follows on Executor Tax Assistance engagements.

Everything in executor tax assistance hangs off a single anchor. The expanded trust reporting rules require most trusts to file a T3 with a beneficial-ownership schedule listing trustees, beneficiaries and settlors, even where no tax is payable and no income was earned.

It would be simpler if the story ended there, but a second rule enters almost immediately. A deceased taxpayer’s final T1 can be paired with a separate rights-or-things return, which gives a second set of personal credits and often saves real tax. The final point is less about opportunity and more about what happens when a file is challenged: An estate qualifies as a graduated rate estate for its first 36 months, giving access to graduated rates rather than the top marginal rate — but only if the designation is made on the first return.

Taken together, these rules explain why executor tax assistance can rarely be treated as a do-it-once-and-forget exercise. A tax advisor watches how they interact across your specific facts, which is something no checklist can do. To keep the engagement efficient, assemble these records before we begin.

Every file we prepare is reviewed with you before anything is filed, the fee is fixed and agreed up front, and you pay only after the service is delivered. If executor tax assistance is on your list, the conversation costs nothing to start.

Executor Tax Assistance: Straight Answers to Common Questions

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does Executor Tax Assistance cost in Canada?

Executor Tax Assistance starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for Executor Tax Assistance?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does Executor Tax Assistance take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We are a cloud-based practice serving every province and territory, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for Executor Tax Assistance?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes Executor Tax Assistance different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in Executor Tax Assistance services?

Our executor tax assistance services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with Executor Tax Assistance services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

What information will you ask me for once the executor tax assistance work is underway?

There is a widespread assumption here, and the actual position is worth stating plainly. T1 returns are due April 30, and June 15 for the self-employed — but any balance owing is due April 30 regardless, with interest compounding daily from that date. The June deadline misleads a great many self-employed filers into paying two months late without realising it. If your current setup was built on the assumption instead of the rule, that is fixable — but sooner is better than later.

What should I look for when choosing a provider for executor tax assistance?

A tax specialist answers this differently than a search engine, because the rule has edges. Planning has to be in place before the transaction. The salary-versus-dividend mix, the timing of a capital purchase and the choice of year-end all change the outcome, but only prospectively. Almost every planning opportunity we see missed was available and simply not taken in time; very few are recoverable after year-end. Where your business sits relative to those edges is what we establish in the first meeting.

Commonly Searched Executor Tax Assistance Questions

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

Sign in to CRA My Account, or use the CRA's mobile app, where the return shows as received, in process or assessed, and the refund amount and payment date appear once it has been assessed. The CRA also runs an automated telephone service giving the same information. A representative you have authorised through Represent a Client can check it for you. If the status has not moved past the published processing time, the return is probably under review.

A tax deduction is an amount subtracted from your income before tax is worked out, so it reduces the income being taxed rather than the tax bill directly. Its worth depends on your marginal rate: the higher the rate, the more the deduction saves. Common examples are RRSP contributions, child care costs, union dues, moving expenses and business expenses. Credits work the other way, reducing the tax calculated on that income.

Most people file electronically with software the CRA approves for NETFILE, or have a preparer send the return through EFILE. Paper filing is still accepted and takes far longer to process. Before starting, set up My Account, confirm your direct deposit details, and download the slips the CRA already holds so your return matches its records. For the 2025 tax year the deadline was 30 April 2026, with any balance owing due the same day; a 2025 return not yet filed is late, so file it now to stop the late-filing penalty growing.

The landlord pays tax on rent, not the tenant. Rent received is income, reported every year on the owner's return, and the costs of earning it are deductible: mortgage interest, property tax, insurance, utilities you pay, advertising, repairs and condo fees. Improvements are added to the cost of the property and written off over time instead. Rent a tenant pays for a home is not deductible, although some provinces give a housing or occupancy credit on the provincial return.

There is no standard amount. The refund equals tax withheld and instalments paid, less the tax calculated on the return after deductions and credits, so two people on the same salary can end up with very different results. Payroll withholding that ran higher than needed, RRSP deductions, tuition and medical claims and spousal transfers all push the figure up. The notice of assessment confirms the final number once the return is processed.

The CRA does not usually move a due date, but you can ask for a payment arrangement that spreads the balance over time. Interest keeps running while you pay. Apply through My Account, My Business Account, or the CRA's debt management call centre. Where interest or penalties arose from circumstances beyond your control, ask for relief using form RC4288. British Columbia's property tax deferment program is a separate provincial scheme with its own application.

Property tax is an annual charge a municipality levies on real estate to fund local services such as roads, water, policing, fire and schools. A provincial assessment authority values the property, council sets a tax rate in its budget, and the bill is the assessed value multiplied by the rate for your property class. Unpaid amounts stay attached to the property itself. It is separate from income tax, so the city bills it, not the CRA.

Two things: your property's assessed value and the tax rate your municipality sets each year, plus any education levy. Assessment reflects the market value of comparable properties at a set valuation date, so additions, renovations and rising local sale prices push it up. The bill falls when the assessment drops, a rate is cut, or you qualify for a rebate or a seniors or disability deferral. An assessment you believe is wrong can be appealed by the deadline on the notice.

Newfoundland and Labrador charges 15% HST in 2026 on most goods and services, combining the 5% federal GST with the provincial part. Income tax has two layers: the federal rates that apply everywhere, plus the province's own progressive brackets and credits, so your overall rate depends on your taxable income rather than on any single provincial percentage. The bracket thresholds and rates for the year you are filing are on CRA's provincial and territorial tax rates page.

No GST/HST applies. Menstrual products, including pads, tampons, cups and liners, are zero-rated, so neither the federal GST of 5% for 2025 and 2026 nor the provincial part of the HST is charged on them. The provincial sales tax provinces generally exempt them as well, though each keeps its own exemption list. If a receipt shows tax on these items, ask the retailer to correct it and check the CRA's zero-rated guidance.

Canada Student Grants arrive on a T4A and fall under the same scholarship exemption, so a full-time student in a qualifying programme who is eligible for the education amount generally pays no tax on them. Part-time students get a smaller exemption tied to tuition and required materials. Student loans are not income at all, so only the grant portion is ever reportable. Keep the slip even when the exemption reduces the taxable amount to nil.
