Input Tax Credit Review: Our Analysis

CRA reviews are won on documentation: every figure filed should trace to a source document, and deadlines — 90 days for an objection — are unforgiving. Input tax credits can generally be claimed up to four years back for smaller registrants, but the documentation the CRA demands scales with invoice size. We quote input tax credit review as one low-cost fixed price — the budget-friendly alternative to hourly billing.

What the Paperwork Teaches Us About Input Tax Credit Review

Clients often arrive treating input tax credit review as a form-filling exercise. In practice, a tax preparation specialist spends more time on judgment calls than on data entry — and those calls are what these notes cover.

The starting point is not a strategy but a constraint: Input tax credits generally have a four-year claim window for smaller registrants, but the documentation the CRA requires scales with the invoice amount.

From there, the file turns on a second question, and the rule behind it reads as follows. Place-of-supply rules decide the rate: for most services it follows the customer’s address on file. A supplier in a 5% GST province can therefore owe 15% HST on a sale to Atlantic Canada. The last of the major rules is about when, not what. Registration becomes mandatory once taxable supplies exceed $30,000 in a single calendar quarter or over four consecutive quarters. Exceeding it in one quarter makes the sale that crossed it taxable. Over four quarters, you stop being a small supplier at the end of the month after the fourth quarter.

You do not need to hold all of this in your head. You need someone who does — and a tax expert handling input tax credit review week after week keeps these rules current so you do not have to. Before the first meeting, it helps to pull together the records that let a tax preparation specialist see your situation whole.

No surprises is the operating principle: the fee is agreed and fixed before we start, you review everything before it is filed, and payment comes after the work, not before.

Case Study 1

Collections Halted And $99,000 Cut From A 4-Year Backlog — Mixed-Supply Practice, Hamilton

Collections had begun against a professional practice with exempt and taxable supplies in Hamilton, Ontario over 4 years of unfiled returns. Bringing them current cut $99,000 from the balance.

By the time a professional practice with exempt and taxable supplies in Hamilton, Ontario called, 4 years were outstanding. The CRA had assessed on estimates. Underneath it sat management fees between two related registrants carrying tax that only ever went out and came back. We reconstructed the records year by year. We self-assessed the tax on the real property acquisition in the correct reporting period and claimed the offsetting input tax credit in the same return. Each filing replaced an arbitrary assessment with a real one. The account is current. Filing on real numbers rather than CRA estimates reduced the balance by $99,000, and a relief application addressed part of the accumulated interest.

Case Study 2

18 Months Reconciled And $8,500 Of Input Tax Recovered — US-Bound Exporter, Kelowna

18 months of records at a manufacturer exporting to the US in Kelowna, British Columbia had never been reconciled. That left a commercial property purchase closed on the assumption no tax applied because the vendor was not registered. Rebuilding recovered $8,500.

Nothing reconciled at a manufacturer exporting to the US in Kelowna, British Columbia. Every filing started with 18 months of cleanup. The file was carrying a commercial property purchase closed on the assumption no tax applied because the vendor was not registered. We rebuilt from source rather than correcting on top of the existing file. We rebuilt the sales ledger by customer province and applied the correct place-of-supply rate to each stream. We filed corrected returns before the CRA opened a review. Then we set the routine that keeps it clean. 18 months reconciled to the bank. The close now takes 7 days, and $8,500 of previously unclaimable input tax was recovered in the process.

Case Study 3

$97,000 Proposed Adjustment Withdrawn In Full — Freight Brokerage, London

A freight brokerage in London, Ontario faced a $97,000 proposed reassessment. It came after nil periods left unfiled, which held up the refund on the one period that mattered. We rebuilt the documentation and the adjustment was withdrawn in full.

A freight brokerage in London, Ontario received a proposal letter opening a review of input tax credit review. The CRA had identified nil periods left unfiled, which held up the refund on the one period that mattered. It proposed an adjustment of $97,000, with 30 days to respond. We treated the response as an evidence exercise rather than an argument. We assembled the export documentation, restored zero-rating on the qualifying sales, and reduced the proposed assessment. We then indexed every supporting document against the specific line the auditor had questioned. The proposed adjustment was withdrawn in full — all $97,000 of it. The file closed in 5 weeks with no change to the assessed amounts and no penalty.

Case Study 4

Corporate Structure Rebuilt For $69,000 Of Annual Savings — Restaurant Group, Calgary

The structure at a restaurant group in Calgary, Alberta no longer fitted the business. HST charged at the home-province rate on sales into four different provinces showed it. Rebuilding it saves $69,000 a year.

The structure at a restaurant group in Calgary, Alberta dated from years earlier. It had been set up for a business that no longer existed. HST charged at the home-province rate on sales into four different provinces had become expensive. We brought the nil and missing periods current so the account was clean before the refund claim was filed. The reorganisation used the rollover provisions rather than a taxable transfer, so no tax fell due on the restructuring itself. $69,000 of annual saving, achieved on a tax-deferred basis. The minute book, elections and valuations are all in the file.

Case Study 5

$150,000 Of Working Capital Freed From The Tax Cycle — Used-Equipment Dealer, Kitchener

A used-equipment dealer in Kitchener, Ontario was profitable and permanently short of cash. Behind the gap sat a registration threshold crossed nine months before anyone registered. Restructuring the tax cycle freed $150,000.

A used-equipment dealer in Kitchener, Ontario was profitable on paper and short of cash every month. A registration threshold crossed nine months before anyone registered explained most of the gap. We backdated the registration to the date the business stopped being a small supplier, remitted the tax owing, and applied for relief on the penalty portion. We also built a thirteen-week cash view so tax payments stopped competing with payroll for the same dollars. $150,000 was released back into working capital. Remittances have been on time every period since, and the forecast shows the tax outflow before it lands.

Case Study 6

$59,000 Credit Claim Filed And Accepted Without Adjustment — Interprovincial Marketing Agency, Ottawa

A marketing agency billing outside its home province in Ottawa, Ontario had never tested its work against the eligibility rules. The resulting $59,000 claim was accepted without adjustment.

A marketing agency billing outside its home province in Ottawa, Ontario assumed the credits did not apply to a business its size. Input tax credits claimed on the exempt side of a mixed-supply business meant they had applied all along. We identified the qualifying activity and built the documentation to support it. Then we filed the section 156 election for the related registrants, so supplies between them stopped carrying tax that served no purpose but cash-flow drag. $59,000 recovered. Because the eligibility analysis is on file, the same claim can be repeated each year with a fraction of the effort.

Before You Call: Input Tax Credit Review FAQs

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does Input Tax Credit Review cost in Canada?

Input Tax Credit Review starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for Input Tax Credit Review?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does Input Tax Credit Review take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We serve clients in every province and territory at the same fixed fees, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for Input Tax Credit Review?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes Input Tax Credit Review different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in Input Tax Credit Review services?

Our input tax credit review services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with Input Tax Credit Review services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

What records should I gather before starting input tax credit review?

An income tax specialist answers this differently than a search engine, because the rule has edges. Input tax credits generally have a four-year claim window for smaller registrants, but the documentation the CRA requires scales with the invoice amount. Where your business sits relative to those edges is what we establish in the first meeting.

How is your approach to input tax credit review different from doing it through software?

There is a widespread assumption here, and the actual position is worth stating plainly. Place-of-supply rules decide the rate: for most services it follows the customer’s address on file. A supplier in a 5% GST province can therefore owe 15% HST on a sale to Atlantic Canada. If your current setup was built on the assumption instead of the rule, that is fixable — but sooner is better than later.

People Also Ask About Input Tax Credit Review

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

CRA online filing for 2025 returns opened 23 February 2026 and closes 29 January 2027. Most people file between late February and the 30 April 2026 deadline, and that stretch is what tax season refers to. You can gather documents and prepare a return earlier, but it cannot be sent electronically before the system opens. Employment and investment slips such as T4 and T5 are issued by payers early in the year, and the CRA's Auto-fill service can pull the ones it already holds once you have set up My Account.

Nova Scotia charges HST, a single combined tax covering the federal and provincial parts, collected and reported on one GST/HST return. Residents also pay Nova Scotia income tax in graduated brackets on top of federal tax, and property tax is set by the municipality rather than the province. The provincial share of the HST rate has been changed in recent years, so confirm the current combined rate on canada.ca before quoting it.

Canada has no joint return. Each spouse or common-law partner files a separate T1, and there is no option to file as a couple. You must still report your marital status and your partner's net income on your own return, because benefits and several credits are worked out on combined family income. An inaccurate partner figure is a common cause of benefit reassessments later, so prepare the two returns together even though they remain separate filings.

The HST is a single sales tax blending the federal 5% GST with a participating province's own sales tax, collected and administered by the CRA. For 2026 it is 13% in Ontario, 14% in Nova Scotia since 1 April 2025, and 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island. A registrant charges HST on taxable supplies, claims input tax credits on its purchases, and remits the difference on one return. Elsewhere you charge the 5% GST plus any separate provincial tax.

HST in Nova Scotia is 14% in 2026. The province cut it from 15% on 1 April 2025 by lowering its own component from 10% to 9%; the federal 5% GST part was unchanged. Nova Scotia is the only jurisdiction at 14%, so the Atlantic provinces are no longer on one rate. Under the transitional rules, amounts that became payable before 1 April 2025 were still subject to 15%.

The business number is the single identifier the CRA uses for your business, with a separate programme account opened under it for each obligation: GST/HST, payroll deductions, corporate income tax, import and export. Register through Business Registration Online, by phone or by mail, or receive one automatically when you incorporate federally. You need it before you can remit payroll or file GST/HST. Provincial registration is separate in some provinces, notably Quebec, where Revenu Québec administers its own accounts.

Line 23600 is net income on the T1 return, being total income less deductions such as RRSP contributions, union dues, childcare and support payments. It sits above taxable income, which is calculated further down after additional deductions. Net income matters because the CRA uses it to test income-tested benefits and credits, including the Canada Child Benefit and the GST/HST credit. You will find the figure on the return itself and on your notice of assessment.

No. Filing is triggered by circumstances, not by an income floor. You must file if you owe tax, if the CRA asks you to, if you had self-employment income, if you disposed of property, or if benefits have to be repaid. Even with no income at all, filing is usually worth it: the GST/HST credit, Canada child benefit, provincial benefits and your RRSP room all depend on an assessed return for that year.

Yes, prepared food and drinks are taxable. Ontario runs a point-of-sale rebate that removes the provincial part of the HST on qualifying prepared food and beverages sold at or below a set price limit, so those orders are taxed at 5% instead of 13%. Combos and larger orders above the limit carry the full 13%. The rebate is applied per sale, which is why two similar items can be taxed differently. Ontario's point-of-sale rebate page gives the current limit.

There is no single percentage. Canada applies graduated federal rates plus a provincial or territorial rate, and each bracket taxes only the income falling inside it, so the marginal rate on your last dollar is higher than the average rate you actually pay. Credits such as the basic personal amount cut the result further. Check the federal and provincial brackets for the year you are filing on the CRA site, since they are indexed annually.

Taxable income covers employment income and taxable benefits, self-employment and side income, tips, pensions and registered plan withdrawals, EI and most government support payments, interest, dividends, the taxable part of capital gains, rental profit, and foreign income earned while resident here. Residents report worldwide income, and the absence of a slip does not make an amount exempt. Taxable income is what remains after the deductions you qualify for, and the rates apply to that figure.

Yes. Posted pump prices in Canada already include the federal excise tax, the provincial or territorial fuel tax, any local transit levy and GST or HST, so the displayed price is what you pay per litre. Fuel receipts normally show the GST or HST portion separately, which matters if you are registered and claiming input tax credits on business fuel. Keep the receipts themselves rather than relying on a card statement, which does not break out the tax.
