Price match Yes, on written quotes Rarely
CRA audit support Included Billed extra
Typical turnaround 3-5 business days 2-4 weeks

Words That Come Up in Wave Accounting Support Work

T1 General
The personal income tax return individuals file with the CRA each year.
T2 Corporate Return
The corporate income tax return every incorporated Canadian business must file.
GST/HST Return
The sales-tax return businesses file to remit GST/HST collected, net of input tax credits.
Wave Accounting Support: Our Analysis

Monthly reconciliation is what keeps input tax credits claimable — unmatched receipts are the first thing disallowed in a GST/HST review. Our wave accounting support engagement is priced as a low-cost flat fee, so the cost is known before the work starts.

Field Notes: Wave Accounting Support

These notes are written the way a tax services provider would explain Wave Accounting Support across a desk: no theory, just the points that decide real files.

One rule does more work than the rest combined, so it goes first. Bank feeds are not a bookkeeping system. Auto-categorised transactions still need reconciliation to statements, because a duplicated feed entry is indistinguishable from a real expense on the face of the ledger.

From there, the file turns on a second question, and the rule behind it reads as follows. Cash-basis records are not acceptable for a corporation. Income must be reported on the accrual basis, with receivables and payables recognised when they arise rather than when the money moves. The last of the major rules is about when, not what. Personal expenses run through a corporate account are shareholder benefits, taxable to the shareholder personally whether or not they were ever labelled as such.

So where does that leave you? In most cases, with a decision about whether to work through wave accounting support alone or hand the moving parts to a tax filing specialist who tracks them for a living. Before the first meeting, it helps to pull together the records that let a tax services provider see your situation whole.

When you are ready, the process is straightforward — we agree a fixed fee up front, prepare the work, walk you through it before filing, and you pay once the service is delivered.

Case Study 2

Filed On Time From A Standing Start, $69,000 Penalty Avoided — Mobile Pet-Grooming Company, Hamilton

A mobile pet-grooming company in Hamilton, Ontario was 7 weeks from a deadline while carrying meals and entertainment coded at full cost with the input tax credit claimed on the whole amount. Filing complete and on time avoided roughly $69,000 in penalties.

Case Study 3

Second-Province Expansion Handled, $110,000 Of Cash Released — Wedding Photography Studio, Mississauga

A wedding photography studio in Mississauga, Ontario expanded into a second province carrying three years of returns filed off numbers nobody could trace back to a bank statement. Every obligation was set up in advance and $110,000 of cash released.

Case Study 4

3 Years Filed, $52,000 Removed From The Assessed Balance — Dental Hygiene Clinic, Lethbridge

3 years of returns were outstanding at a dental hygiene clinic in Lethbridge, Alberta, on top of eighteen months of unreconciled transactions and a shoebox of receipts. Filing on real numbers removed $52,000 of assessed tax.

Case Study 5

Books Rebuilt From Source, $10,500 In Unclaimed Input Tax Found — Owner-Operated Trades Business, Moncton

The ledger at an owner-operated trades business in Moncton, New Brunswick could not support its own filings because of sales recorded from bank deposits, so processor fees, chargebacks and refunds appeared nowhere in the ledger. Rebuilding it surfaced $10,500 in unclaimed input tax.

Case Study 6

$88,000 Proposed Adjustment Withdrawn In Full — Residential Cleaning Franchise, Kitchener

A residential cleaning franchise in Kitchener, Ontario faced a $88,000 proposed reassessment after a bookkeeping file where owner draws, payroll and supplier payments all landed in the same account. We rebuilt the documentation and the adjustment was withdrawn in full.

Before You Call: Wave Accounting Support FAQs

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does Wave Accounting Support cost in Canada?

Wave Accounting Support starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for Wave Accounting Support?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does Wave Accounting Support take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We are a cloud-based practice serving every province and territory, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for Wave Accounting Support?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes Wave Accounting Support different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in Wave Accounting Support services?

Our wave accounting support services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with Wave Accounting Support services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

How do you price wave accounting support for a small business?

You are asking the right question, and it has a real answer. An expense is deductible where it was incurred to earn income and is reasonable in the circumstances. The business-use portion must be supported, which for vehicles means a logbook. The CRA rarely argues that an expense category is wrong; it argues that the proportion claimed was never substantiated. What we add on top of that is the paperwork discipline that makes the answer stand up if anyone ever asks you to prove it.

What happens during the first meeting about wave accounting support?

Our answer starts where the legislation starts. The CRA requires business records to be kept for six years from the end of the tax year they relate to, in a form that allows the return to be verified. Where records cannot support the return, the CRA is entitled to assess on its own estimate — and the burden of disproving that estimate falls on the taxpayer. From there it is a matter of applying it to your year — and that application, not the rule itself, is where a tax services provider earns the fee.

People Also Ask About Wave Accounting Support

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

The refund is normally released with the assessment itself, so a direct deposit follows soon after the notice appears in My Account, and a cheque takes longer because it travels by post. If nothing arrives, read the notice: the CRA may have applied the refund against an outstanding balance, family support arrears or another government debt, or held it while the return is reviewed or an earlier year remains unfiled. My Account shows the payment date once it is issued.

No. The GST, HST, PST or QST you charge is not your revenue. You collect it as an agent and remit it, so it belongs in a liability account and revenue is recorded net of tax. Including it overstates sales and distorts every margin you calculate. Input tax credits work the same way in reverse, against that liability rather than as an expense. Payment processors deposit tax-included amounts, which is why bank totals never equal revenue.

Tax legislation is the written law that imposes and administers tax: federally the Income Tax Act and the Excise Tax Act, plus each province's own statutes and the municipal bylaws behind property tax. A change usually begins as a budget announcement, is drafted into a bill, passes Parliament and takes effect on royal assent. Regulations and CRA guidance sit beneath the statutes and explain administration without replacing them. Some proposals are administered before they pass, and a few never do.

The CRA publishes its numbers on the Contact the Canada Revenue Agency page, with separate lines for individual enquiries, business enquiries and benefits. We do not quote them here because they change and vary by service. Have your social insurance number or business number, a recent return and your postal code ready, since the agent will verify your identity before discussing your account. Automated self-service handles balances, and My Account answers many questions without a call.

Federally, no. Employer contributions to a private health services plan covering medical, dental and hospital care are not a taxable benefit, so they do not show up in your income. Quebec taxes them provincially, which is why a Quebec slip can show an amount the federal one does not. Premiums you pay yourself, including the employee share deducted from pay, can count as medical expenses on your T1. Group life and some wage-loss plans are treated differently.

Yes. GST and HST are one federal tax, so a registrant claims tax paid anywhere in Canada on the same return, at whatever rate applied where the supply was made. An Alberta business billed 13% HST on an Ontario hotel stay recovers the full 13%, as long as the expense relates to commercial activity and the invoice shows the tax. Provincial retail taxes are different: British Columbia PST, Saskatchewan PST and Manitoba RST are costs, not credits.

A write-off is an expense deducted from income so that tax applies to a smaller amount. It is not a refund of what you spent: the saving equals the expense multiplied by your marginal rate. Employees may deduct very little, while a business or self-employed person can deduct reasonable costs incurred to earn income, though categories such as meals and entertainment, vehicles and home office are restricted. Keep receipts, because the CRA can ask for them years later.

No. Interest and late-payment charges on an overdue account are not payment for a separate supply, so no GST/HST is added, even though the original invoice carried tax. A charge that is really payment for something you actually supply, such as a re-delivery, a restocking service or an administrative service, is taxable on its own terms. Where the amount is purely a penalty for paying late, bill it without tax.

The Guaranteed Income Supplement is tested on the income you reported for the previous calendar year, plus your spouse income if you have one. Old Age Security pension itself does not count. Employment and self-employment earnings get a partial exemption, while most other taxable income counts in full, including RRSP and RRIF withdrawals, workplace pensions, CPP, and investment income. If your income drops because you retired, ask Service Canada to use an estimate for the current year.

There is no single national start date. Each participating province harmonised its own sales tax with the GST at a different time, and some later changed course, one province reversing harmonisation entirely and returning to a separate provincial sales tax. The Atlantic provinces harmonised first and Ontario followed years afterwards. Because the answer depends on the province, check the CRA page on GST/HST rates and participating provinces, which sets out the rate history for each.

It depends on the province, and for 2026 the rates are: Alberta and the territories 5% GST only; Ontario 13% HST; New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island 15%; Nova Scotia 14% since 1 April 2025. British Columbia adds 7% PST and Saskatchewan 6% PST on top of the 5% GST, Manitoba adds 7% RST, and Quebec charges 9.975% QST on the pre-GST price, 14.975% combined. Basic groceries are untaxed.

No. Public transit fares are exempt from GST and HST, so GO Train and GO Bus tickets, Presto loads, monthly passes and municipal transit fares carry no tax. The exemption covers scheduled local and commuter service, not charter buses, sightseeing tours or intercity coach and rail tickets, which are taxable. Taxi and airport shuttle trips are taxable as well. An employer-paid transit pass has its own treatment as a taxable benefit on a T4.
