T1 General

GST/HST Return
The sales-tax return businesses file to remit GST/HST collected, net of input tax credits.
Xero Bookkeeping Services: Our Analysis

The CRA requires business records to be kept for six years from the end of the last tax year they relate to. Our xero bookkeeping services engagement is priced as a affordable flat fee, so the cost is known before the work starts.

A Tax Professional's Notes on Xero Bookkeeping Services

There is a version of xero bookkeeping services that runs smoothly and a version that turns into correspondence. The difference is rarely luck; it comes down to details any tax professional handling these files weekly learns to check first.

Before anything else, one rule sets the frame. Business records must be kept for six years from the end of the last tax year they relate to, and the CRA can require them in electronic form that it can actually read.

Pair that with the next rule and most of the confusion around xero bookkeeping services disappears: A small corporation still carries the full compliance set: T2, GST/HST, payroll, and the annual return with the incorporating jurisdiction. The annual corporate return is separate from the T2 and is the one most often forgotten, which can lead to administrative dissolution. The third rule is where the real exposure hides. Inventory is valued at the lower of cost and net realisable value, applied consistently. Changing method without CRA consent reopens prior years. Obsolete stock carried at cost overstates income, and the write-down is usually taken years after it was justified.

Taken together, these rules explain why xero bookkeeping services can rarely be treated as a do-it-once-and-forget exercise. A tax professional watches how they interact across your specific facts, which is something no checklist can do. Think of this list as the raw material a tax professional works from on xero bookkeeping services.

The last note is about how we work rather than the rules: every engagement comes with a fixed fee agreed up front, a review with you before filing, and payment after — not before — the service.

Xero Bookkeeping Services: Straight Answers to Common Questions

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does Xero Bookkeeping Services cost in Canada?

Xero Bookkeeping Services starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for Xero Bookkeeping Services?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does Xero Bookkeeping Services take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We are a cloud-based practice serving every province and territory, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for Xero Bookkeeping Services?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes Xero Bookkeeping Services different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in Xero Bookkeeping Services?

Our xero bookkeeping services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with Xero Bookkeeping Services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

What records should I gather before starting xero bookkeeping services?

Let us give you the substance first and the caveats second. Personal expenses run through a corporate account are shareholder benefits, taxable to the shareholder personally whether or not they were ever labelled as such. The caveat is simply that facts on your file can shift the outcome, so treat this as the baseline rather than the final word.

How is your approach to xero bookkeeping services different from doing it through software?

A tax consultant answers this differently than a search engine, because the rule has edges. Cash-basis records are not acceptable for a corporation. Income must be reported on the accrual basis, with receivables and payables recognised when they arise rather than when the money moves. Where your business sits relative to those edges is what we establish in the first meeting.

Commonly Searched Xero Bookkeeping Services Questions

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

Multiply the pre-tax price by the rate for the province of supply. On a $100 purchase in 2026 that is $13.00 in Ontario (13%), $14.00 in Nova Scotia (14%), and $15.00 in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador or Prince Edward Island (15%). In the non-participating provinces and the three territories only the 5% GST applies, so $5.00, plus any provincial sales tax billed separately.

Divide the total by one plus the rate. At Ontario's 13% in 2026, a $113 tax-included total is $113 divided by 1.13, or $100 before tax and $13 of HST. Use 1.14 in Nova Scotia, 1.15 in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island, and 1.05 where only the 5% GST applies. Multiplying the total by 13 over 113 gives the Ontario tax directly.

There is no single figure, because your province and your credits change the result. On $43,000 of employment income for 2026, the federal rate on the lowest bracket is 14%, and the federal basic personal amount of $16,452 removes tax on the first part of your income. Provincial tax and CPP and EI deductions apply on top. Run your own numbers through the CRA's payroll deductions online calculator.

Most housing support is not taxable. Rent supplements, rent-geared-to-income subsidies and one-time housing top-ups are benefit payments rather than income, and there is normally no slip and nothing to report. Social assistance that happens to include a shelter component is different: it comes on a slip, goes into income and is then deducted, which affects benefit calculations but not tax. If you received a slip, report it; if not, check that program's own page.

Municipal property tax is billed by your city and is separate from income tax. The bill is your assessed value multiplied by the local rate, so the lever you control is the assessment: read your assessment notice, compare it against similar nearby properties, and file a request for reconsideration or an appeal with your provincial assessment authority inside its deadline. Also check local programs, such as senior, low-income or disability deferrals and rebates, and confirm the property class is right.

Yes, where the underlying expense is deductible for the business. A tip on a client meal follows the meals and entertainment rule, so only a portion of the total, tip included, is deductible. A tip on a deductible taxi, delivery or hotel charge is deductible in full as part of that cost. Keep the receipt showing the amount and note the business purpose, since cash tips with no record are the first thing a reviewer removes.

No. Insurance premiums are an exempt financial service, so no GST/HST appears on them and there is no input tax credit to claim. Provinces levy their own taxes on certain premiums, and Ontario applies retail sales tax to some group benefit and insurance premiums, which is why an invoice can still show a tax line. The premium itself stays deductible as a business expense where the coverage relates to earning income.

Yes, but the payments stop until your return is assessed. The credit is calculated from the filed return, so a missing year pauses the quarterly deposits; once the return is processed the CRA recalculates and normally pays the missed quarters retroactively. Several prior years can be picked up if you catch up on old returns. File even with no income, and keep your address and marital status current, because both change the amount.

Double taxation is lawful, and relief comes through credits and treaties rather than exemption. A Canadian resident taxed abroad on foreign income normally claims a foreign tax credit, while Canada's tax treaties cap withholding and decide which country taxes first. Inside Canada, corporate profits paid out as dividends carry a gross-up and dividend tax credit so the combined burden approximates a single level of tax. US LLCs are a common trap, since Canada usually treats one as a corporation.

Ontario's employer health tax is provincial, so it goes to the Ontario Ministry of Finance rather than the CRA. Register with the province, then file the annual return and pay online through ONT-TAXS, at your financial institution, or by mail. Eligible private-sector employers receive an exemption on payroll up to a set amount, and employers above a higher payroll level must make monthly instalments during the year. The current exemption and instalment thresholds are on Ontario's employer health tax page.

Yes, in part. The rate applied to the lowest federal bracket was cut part-way through 2025, so the 2025 return uses a blended rate for that bracket and the full reduction applies from 2026 onward. Bracket thresholds and most credit amounts were also indexed. Separately, the proposed increase to the capital gains inclusion rate was never enacted, so one-half remains the inclusion rate for the 2025 and 2026 tax years. CRA's federal tax rates page gives the exact percentages per year.
