Accounting Process Review: Our Analysis

CRA reviews are won on documentation: every figure filed should trace to a source document, and deadlines — 90 days for an objection — are unforgiving. Compilation engagements now follow CSRS 4200, which sets out the basis-of-accounting note every lender expects to see attached to the statements. We quote accounting process review as one budget-friendly fixed price — the budget-friendly alternative to hourly billing.

From the Desk of Your Tax Professional

If you handle Accounting Process Review once a year, everything looks equally important. Handle it weekly, as a tax professional does, and a clear hierarchy emerges; these notes follow that hierarchy.

One rule does more work than the rest combined, so it goes first. An expense is deductible where it was incurred to earn income and is reasonable in the circumstances. The business-use portion must be supported, which for vehicles means a logbook. The CRA rarely argues that an expense category is wrong; it argues that the proportion claimed was never substantiated.

It would be simpler if the story ended there, but a second rule enters almost immediately. Compilation engagements follow CSRS 4200, which requires a basis-of-accounting note describing exactly how the statements were prepared. Lenders read that note, and an omitted one is the fastest way to have a financing package sent back. One more rule deserves attention, mostly because ignoring it is expensive in ways that only show up later. The CRA expects the trial balance behind a T2 to reconcile to the GIFI schedules filed with it. A statement set that does not tie to the return is the first thing a reviewer notices.

What this means for you depends entirely on facts we have not seen yet — which is the honest answer, and the reason a tax professional starts every accounting process review engagement with questions rather than conclusions. The smoothest files are the ones where the client arrives with these records already assembled.

The last note is about how we work rather than the rules: every engagement comes with a fixed fee agreed up front, a review with you before filing, and payment after — not before — the service.

Questions Accounting Process Review Clients Ask, With Our Answers

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does Accounting Process Review cost in Canada?

Accounting Process Review starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for Accounting Process Review?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does Accounting Process Review take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We are a cloud-based practice serving every province and territory, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for Accounting Process Review?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes Accounting Process Review different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in Accounting Process Review services?

Our accounting process review services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with Accounting Process Review services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

What information will you ask me for once the accounting process review work is underway?

Let us give you the substance first and the caveats second. An expense is deductible where it was incurred to earn income and is reasonable in the circumstances. The business-use portion must be supported, which for vehicles means a logbook. The CRA rarely argues that an expense category is wrong; it argues that the proportion claimed was never substantiated. The caveat is simply that facts on your file can shift the outcome, so treat this as the baseline rather than the final word.

What should I look for when choosing a provider for accounting process review?

A tax consultant answers this differently than a search engine, because the rule has edges. A small corporation still carries the full compliance set: T2, GST/HST, payroll, and the annual return with the incorporating jurisdiction. The annual corporate return is separate from the T2 and is the one most often forgotten, which can lead to administrative dissolution. Where your business sits relative to those edges is what we establish in the first meeting.

What Canadians Search About Accounting Process Review

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

Rent on your home is not deductible on a Canadian return. Two situations change that. Self-employed people, and employees who meet the work-space-in-the-home conditions, may claim the share of rent tied to the area used for work. Several provinces also run a property tax or rent based credit, applied for on the provincial schedule filed with your T1, where rent paid affects the amount. Keep receipts and your landlord's details either way.

CRA online filing for 2025 returns opened 23 February 2026 and closes 29 January 2027. Most people file between late February and the 30 April 2026 deadline, and that stretch is what tax season refers to. You can gather documents and prepare a return earlier, but it cannot be sent electronically before the system opens. Employment and investment slips such as T4 and T5 are issued by payers early in the year, and the CRA's Auto-fill service can pull the ones it already holds once you have set up My Account.

A write-off is simply a deductible expense. You subtract it from the income it helped earn, so the saving equals the expense multiplied by your marginal tax rate, not the full amount spent. To qualify, the cost must be incurred to earn business or employment income, be reasonable in amount, and be backed by a receipt. Purely personal costs never qualify, and mixed-use items such as a vehicle or a home office are split by business-use proportion.

Two different categories carry no tax. Zero-rated supplies are taxed at nil, including basic groceries, prescription drugs, medical devices and most agricultural products, and the seller can still claim input tax credits. Exempt supplies, such as most residential rent, health and dental care and financial services, carry no tax and no input tax credits. Small suppliers below the $30,000 threshold, unchanged for 2025 and 2026, also charge nothing until they register. The CRA lists both categories.

Divide the total by one plus the rate. At Ontario's 13% in 2026, a $113 tax-included total is $113 divided by 1.13, or $100 before tax and $13 of HST. Use 1.14 in Nova Scotia, 1.15 in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island, and 1.05 where only the 5% GST applies. Multiplying the total by 13 over 113 gives the Ontario tax directly.

Not on a Canadian personal return. Net income there is total income minus deductions such as RRSP contributions and union dues, worked out before any tax is applied, and it is the figure used to test income-tested benefits and credits. In everyday payroll language, net pay does mean what reaches your account after tax and other withholdings. For a corporation it depends on the statement: accounting net income is normally after tax, while the return starts from income before tax.

No. Revenue is income you have earned and belongs on the income statement, not among liabilities. Money taken before you deliver the goods or service is different: unearned or deferred revenue is a liability until you perform the work. Sales tax you collect is also a liability rather than revenue. Booking customer deposits straight to sales is a common error that overstates profit and distorts the figures on your GST/HST return.

Usually yes. Digital services, subscriptions and downloads sold to Canadian customers are taxable supplies, so GST/HST applies at the customer’s provincial rate — 5% GST alone in Alberta, or 13% in Ontario, for instance. Non-resident vendors and platforms selling to Canadian consumers generally have to register and charge tax under the simplified regime. If you sell online, the rate follows where your customer is, not where you are. Some provinces add their own sales tax.

Call the CRA's individual enquiries line and ask to have the account unlocked; the number is on the Contact the Canada Revenue Agency page. Accounts lock after repeated failed sign-ins, and the CRA also revokes access itself when it suspects credentials were compromised. The agent verifies you with your social insurance number, date of birth, address and a figure from a recently filed return, so have a copy of it in front of you.

That figure is your payroll deduction rate, not a tax bracket. Canada's federal rates for 2026 start at 14% and rise through 20.5%, 26% and 29% to 33%, and what leaves your cheque blends federal and provincial tax with CPP at 5.95% and EI at $1.63 per $100 of insurable earnings for 2026. Payroll also annualises each cheque, so a bonus or overtime period is taxed as if every period looked the same. Filing squares it up.

There is no single figure, because the amount depends on your income, your province and which taxes are counted. Studies that quote an average usually bundle income tax, payroll contributions, sales tax and property tax together, which is why published numbers differ so widely. For your own position, divide the total tax shown on your notice of assessment by your total income to get your effective rate, then compare that with later years rather than with a national average.
