Bankruptcy Tax Return Assistance: Our Analysis

What We Notice Preparing Bankruptcy Tax Return Assistance Files

What follows is the working view of a tax specialist who prepares bankruptcy tax return assistance week in, week out — the points that decide real files.

Ask any tax specialist where bankruptcy tax return assistance files go sideways, and the answer usually traces back to this: Medical expenses can be claimed for any twelve-month period ending in the tax year. Choosing the window deliberately often produces a larger credit than a calendar-year claim.

A related rule tends to get overlooked precisely because the first one draws all the attention: Unused RRSP contribution room carries forward indefinitely. A contribution made in a high-income year is worth materially more than the same dollar contributed in a low-income year. The final point is less about opportunity and more about what happens when a file is challenged: Moving expenses are deductible where the new home is at least 40 kilometres closer to the new work location. The deduction is limited to income earned at the new location.

Think of these rules as the fixed terrain; your circumstances decide the route through it. Mapping that route is the work a tax specialist takes off your plate for bankruptcy tax return assistance. Gathering the following ahead of time turns the first bankruptcy tax return assistance conversation from fact-finding into decision-making.

When you are ready, the process is straightforward — we agree a fixed fee up front, prepare the work, walk you through it before filing, and you pay once the service is delivered.

Bankruptcy Tax Return Assistance Tax & Accounting Case Studies

See how our expert Bankruptcy Tax Return Assistance tax and accounting services have helped Canadian businesses save money and stay compliant.

Case Study 1

$82,000 In Credits Claimed That Prior Filings Had Missed — Disability Amount Claimant, Halifax

4 years of filings at a taxpayer claiming a dependant's transferred disability amount in Halifax, Nova Scotia had never claimed the incentives the work qualified for. The review recovered $82,000.

A taxpayer claiming a dependant's transferred disability amount in Halifax, Nova Scotia had been filing for 4 years. In that time, the incentives its activity qualified for were never claimed. Behind that sat RRSP room accumulated over eight years and never used in a high-income year. We tested each activity against the eligibility criteria rather than the description on the invoice. Then we recalculated the instalments on the current year’s expected income rather than the prior year’s, which stopped the instalment interest from growing. $82,000 in credits claimed, with the open prior years adjusted as well. The claim passed review without adjustment.

Case Study 2

$112,000 Late-Filing Penalty Cancelled On Relief Application — US-Dividend Investor, Saskatoon

A taxpayer with US-source dividends in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan had already been penalised. The issue was a rental property reported without any capital cost allowance analysis. A relief application cancelled $112,000 of that penalty.

A taxpayer with US-source dividends in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan had already missed one deadline and was about to miss a second. Behind it sat a rental property reported without any capital cost allowance analysis. A penalty of $112,000 was accruing. We split the work into what had to happen before the deadline and what could follow it. Then we reported the disposition and filed the principal residence designation for the year of sale, closing the late-designation exposure before the CRA raised it. The outstanding return was accepted as filed, and the taxpayer relief application cancelled $112,000 of the penalty already assessed on the earlier year.

Case Study 3

$128,000 Proposed Adjustment Withdrawn In Full — Gig-Economy Driver, London

A gig-economy driver in London, Ontario faced a $128,000 proposed reassessment. It came after a home sale never reported on the basis that the gain was exempt anyway. We rebuilt the documentation and the adjustment was withdrawn in full.

A gig-economy driver in London, Ontario received a proposal letter opening a review of bankruptcy tax return assistance. The CRA had identified a home sale never reported on the basis that the gain was exempt anyway. It proposed an adjustment of $128,000, with 30 days to respond. We treated the response as an evidence exercise rather than an argument. We reset the medical expense claim window, transferred credits between spouses, and applied the tuition and disability amounts to the return that used them. We then indexed every supporting document against the specific line the auditor had questioned. The proposed adjustment was withdrawn in full — all $128,000 of it. The file closed in 8 weeks with no change to the assessed amounts and no penalty.

Case Study 4

$115,000 Of Penalties And Interest Cancelled On Relief — First-Time Home Buyer, Burnaby

A first-time home buyer in Burnaby, British Columbia was carrying $115,000 of penalties and interest. The charges arose from three years of returns filed without the slips that had been mailed to an old address. A relief application cancelled that amount.

An assessment of $115,000 landed at a first-time home buyer in Burnaby, British Columbia following a desk review. It turned on three years of returns filed without the slips that had been mailed to an old address. The auditor had not seen the records behind it. We obtained the signed T2200 and rebuilt the employment-expense claim on the prescribed form with the supporting records attached to the file. We then set out the legislative basis for the position alongside the documents supporting it. $115,000 of penalties and interest was cancelled under the taxpayer relief provisions, and the underlying assessment was adjusted to match the filed position.

Case Study 5

15 Months Reconciled And $7,500 Of Input Tax Recovered — Recently Separated Taxpayer, Brampton

15 months of records at a recently separated taxpayer in Brampton, Ontario had never been reconciled. That left RRSP room accumulated over eight years and never used in a high-income year. Rebuilding recovered $7,500.

Nothing reconciled at a recently separated taxpayer in Brampton, Ontario. Every filing started with 15 months of cleanup. The file was carrying RRSP room accumulated over eight years and never used in a high-income year. We rebuilt from source rather than correcting on top of the existing file. We filed the outstanding T1135 disclosures under the voluntary disclosure route before the CRA raised them. Then we set the routine that keeps it clean. 15 months reconciled to the bank. The close now takes 10 days, and $7,500 of previously unclaimable input tax was recovered in the process.

Case Study 6

Holding Structure Added, $10,500 Saved Annually — Two-Income Landlord Household, Regina

A two-income household with rental property in Regina, Saskatchewan needed a holding structure. It had to deal with years of small donation receipts claimed one at a time instead of pooled onto a single return. The reorganisation was tax-neutral and removed $10,500 of annual exposure.

The structure at a two-income household with rental property in Regina, Saskatchewan needed fixing. The file was carrying years of small donation receipts claimed one at a time instead of pooled onto a single return. Every option for fixing it ran through a reorganisation that had to be done without triggering tax. We worked with the client's lawyer. Together, we pulled the full slip history from the CRA record, refiled the affected years by adjustment request, and recovered the credits that had been missed. We also prepared the elections, resolutions and valuations the structure needed to stand up. The structure now matches the business. Annual saving of $10,500, and the reorganisation itself was tax-neutral.

What Clients Ask Us About Bankruptcy Tax Return Assistance

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does Bankruptcy Tax Return Assistance cost in Canada?

Bankruptcy Tax Return Assistance starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for Bankruptcy Tax Return Assistance?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does Bankruptcy Tax Return Assistance take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We serve clients in every province and territory at the same fixed fees, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for Bankruptcy Tax Return Assistance?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes Bankruptcy Tax Return Assistance different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in Bankruptcy Tax Return Assistance services?

Our bankruptcy tax return assistance services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with Bankruptcy Tax Return Assistance services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

How do you price bankruptcy tax return assistance for a small business?

Medical expenses can be claimed for any twelve-month period ending in the tax year. Choosing the window deliberately often produces a larger credit than a calendar-year claim. We flag this early with every client it touches, because finding it out at filing time leaves you far fewer options than finding it out now.

What goes wrong most often when owners handle bankruptcy tax return assistance themselves?

The honest starting point is this: Unused RRSP contribution room carries forward indefinitely. A contribution made in a high-income year is worth materially more than the same dollar contributed in a low-income year. Everything else we would tell you is tailoring, and tailoring requires seeing your file.

Searched Questions About Bankruptcy Tax Return Assistance

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

Most people pay through online or telephone banking, adding the CRA as a payee and choosing the exact account and year, such as a personal balance owing or an instalment. The alternatives are CRA My Payment with a debit card, pre-authorised debit scheduled in My Account, a credit card or e-transfer through a third-party provider that charges its own fee, or paying at your bank with a remittance voucher. For the 2025 tax year the balance was due 30 April 2026.

Paper returns go to the CRA tax centre that serves your province or territory of residence, not to one national address. The correct address is printed in the paper return package and listed on canada.ca under mailing addresses for individual returns, and it differs for non-residents and for business returns. Filing electronically is much faster: for the 2025 tax year the CRA aims to issue a refund on an online return in about two weeks, against a considerably longer standard on paper.

Rent on your home is not deductible on a Canadian return. Two situations change that. Self-employed people, and employees who meet the work-space-in-the-home conditions, may claim the share of rent tied to the area used for work. Several provinces also run a property tax or rent based credit, applied for on the provincial schedule filed with your T1, where rent paid affects the amount. Keep receipts and your landlord's details either way.

For the 2026 tax year, federal rates are 14% on the first $58,523 of taxable income, 20.5% from there to $117,045, 26% to $181,440, 29% to $258,482, and 33% above that. Each rate applies only to the income inside its own band, so moving into a higher bracket does not raise the tax on the income below it. Provincial or territorial tax is added on top.

EI benefits are taxable income. Service Canada withholds income tax before each payment reaches you, and the total benefits plus the tax withheld appear on your T4E for the year. That withholding follows a basic calculation rather than your full marginal rate, so people who also worked during the year often end up with a balance owing at filing. Asking Service Canada to withhold more, or setting money aside yourself, avoids a surprise. Higher-income claimants can also have to repay part of their regular benefits through the return.

The usual reasons are a return picked for review, a slip or receipt the CRA is still waiting on, a first return or an adjustment, or a paper filing, which runs on a considerably longer standard than the roughly two weeks for an online return. A non-resident return can run to sixteen weeks. Check My Account for the return status and for any letter asking for documents, then answer it promptly, since the file stays open until you do.

There is no standard amount. The refund equals tax withheld and instalments paid, less the tax calculated on the return after deductions and credits, so two people on the same salary can end up with very different results. Payroll withholding that ran higher than needed, RRSP deductions, tuition and medical claims and spousal transfers all push the figure up. The notice of assessment confirms the final number once the return is processed.

Your employer projects your pay over the full year, applies the federal brackets to that annualised figure, subtracts the credits you claimed on your TD1 forms, and withholds a proportional share each pay period. The same is done for your province, so one deduction line reflects both. Employers use the CRA payroll deductions calculator or its published tables. Where large deductions mean too much is being withheld, Form T1213 can reduce it; processing takes several weeks, so the request should go in during the autumn before the year it is meant to apply to.

To add tax, multiply the price by one plus the rate: in Ontario, $100 times 1.13 gives $113 with 13% HST. To find the tax alone, multiply by the rate itself. To strip tax out of a tax-included total, divide by that same figure, so $113 divided by 1.13 returns $100. Quebec is a two-step case, since GST at 5% and QST at 9.975% both apply to the pre-GST price.

Both sides do. The employee pays income tax, CPP contributions and EI premiums, all withheld from each pay and remitted by the employer. The employer pays its own share on top: for 2026, CPP of 5.95% matching the employee's up to the $74,600 ceiling with a $3,500 basic exemption, plus EI at 1.4 times the employee's rate of $1.63 per $100 of insurable earnings. The employer remits everything and reports it on a T4.

Premiums on a personal life insurance policy are not deductible, even when you are self-employed and the policy exists to protect the business. CRA treats the cost as personal. The narrow exception is a policy a lender requires as collateral for a business loan, where part of the premium may be deductible while that loan is outstanding. Health, dental and disability coverage follow separate rules and can sometimes be claimed, so review them apart.

Most of them are. Financial services such as account fees, transfers, overdraft charges and loan interest are exempt supplies, so no GST/HST is charged and there is no input tax credit to claim on them. A few related items, safety deposit boxes and certain administrative or advisory services among them, can be taxable, so read the statement rather than assuming. Bank charges on a business account remain deductible as a business expense either way.
