Childcare Expense Tax Review: Our Analysis

CRA reviews are won on documentation: every figure filed should trace to a source document, and deadlines — 90 days for an objection — are unforgiving. CRA interest on unpaid balances compounds daily at the prescribed rate plus 4%, which is why filing on time matters even when you cannot pay yet. Our childcare expense tax review engagement is priced as a low-cost flat fee, so the cost is known before the work starts.

A Accounting Firm's Notes on Childcare Expense Tax Review

What follows is the working view of an accounting firm who prepares childcare expense tax review week in, week out — the points that decide real files.

First, the rule that sorts straightforward files from complicated ones: Medical expenses can be claimed for any twelve-month period ending in the tax year, so choosing the window deliberately often produces a larger credit than a calendar-year claim.

A related rule tends to get overlooked precisely because the first one draws all the attention: T1 returns are due April 30 — June 15 for the self-employed — but any balance owing accrues interest from April 30 regardless of which filing deadline applies. Then there is the matter of timing, which forgives very little: The late-filing penalty is 5% of the balance owing plus 1% for each full month late, to a maximum of twelve months. A second late filing within three years doubles both figures. The penalty is calculated on the balance owing, so a late return with nothing owing costs nothing — which is why filing on time matters even when you cannot pay.

The common thread in these rules is that they punish assumptions and reward verification. Engaging an accounting firm for childcare expense tax review is, at bottom, a way of replacing assumptions with checked answers. Before the first meeting, it helps to pull together the records that let an accounting firm see your situation whole.

You see the completed work before you pay for it — the quote is locked up front and nothing is filed until you approve it.

Childcare Expense Tax Review Frequently Asked Questions

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does Childcare Expense Tax Review cost in Canada?

Childcare Expense Tax Review starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for Childcare Expense Tax Review?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does Childcare Expense Tax Review take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We are a cloud-based practice serving every province and territory, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for Childcare Expense Tax Review?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes Childcare Expense Tax Review different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in Childcare Expense Tax Review services?

Our childcare expense tax review services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with Childcare Expense Tax Review services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

How long does childcare expense tax review usually take from start to finish?

We get this one a lot, and the answer is more concrete than people expect. Charitable donations can be carried forward for up to five years and claimed by either spouse, and the credit rate steps up above the first $200 of total gifts in a year. Small receipts claimed one year at a time sit in the low tier every time. Bring your documents and we will show you where it lands in your numbers.

What records do I need before starting childcare expense tax review?

Capital losses can be carried back three years against capital gains already reported, which turns a bad year into a refund rather than a carry-forward. That is the part most owners have not heard before they sit down with us, and it usually changes what they do next.

Searched Questions About Childcare Expense Tax Review

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

File a T1 return for the year, sending it electronically with CRA-certified software or mailing a paper return. Gather your slips and receipts first and check them against the ones listed in My Account. For the 2025 tax year the filing and payment deadline was 30 April 2026, or 15 June 2026 to file if you or your spouse were self-employed, with payment still due 30 April 2026. CRA online filing for 2025 returns closes 29 January 2027.

For 2025 returns filed in 2026, most online returns are processed in about two weeks, and a non-resident return can take up to sixteen weeks. A paper return runs on a considerably longer standard because it is handled manually. Those timeframes assume a complete return that is not pulled for review. Register direct deposit and track progress in CRA My Account rather than waiting on a posted cheque.

Work out the tax you actually owe for the year, then compare it with what has already been paid. Total your income, subtract deductions to reach taxable income, apply the federal and provincial brackets, take off your credits, and set the result against the tax withheld on your T4 and other slips plus any instalments. If more was withheld than you owe, the difference is your refund. Tax software approved for NETFILE runs the same arithmetic once your slips are entered.

Most tax saving comes from a short list of levers: contributing to an RRSP or a spousal RRSP, holding investments inside a TFSA, FHSA or RESP so growth is sheltered, claiming every deduction and credit you actually qualify for, and splitting income where the rules allow, such as pension income splitting. Business owners add expense timing and salary versus dividend planning. Order matters, so decide before year end rather than at filing time.

Multiply the pre-tax price by the combined sales tax rate for the province where the sale takes place, then add that amount to the price. In HST provinces it is one rate; elsewhere GST and the provincial tax are applied separately, and in Quebec the QST is calculated on the price before GST rather than on a GST-included amount. Zero-rated and exempt items get nothing added. The place of supply decides the rate, not where your business is based.

You can file a Canadian personal return at no cost using CRA-certified free tax software, which sends the return through NETFILE. Volunteer clinics run by community organisations also prepare simple returns free of charge for people with modest income. Paper filing costs only postage. Free software suits straightforward employment and pension income; self-employment, rental or foreign property usually needs a preparer. CRA online filing for 2025 returns opened 23 February 2026 and closes 29 January 2027.

A spouse or common-law partner can transfer the unused part of several non-refundable credits: the age amount, the pension income amount, the disability amount and the tuition amount, once the person entitled to them has reduced their own tax to nil. Charitable donations and medical expenses are not transferred but can be claimed by either partner, which often favours the lower-income one for medical. The CRA's page on amounts transferred from your spouse sets out the limits.

Yes. Tips are taxable income to whoever ends up with them, whether paid in cash, added to a card or shared through a pool. Controlled tips that the employer collects and hands out are treated as employment income and run through payroll with the usual withholdings. Direct tips passed straight from customer to server are reported by the server on their T1. An owner includes any tips retained by the business in business income.

The CRA publishes a benefit payment calendar each year. The Canada child benefit and CPP and OAS pensions are paid monthly, while the GST/HST credit is paid quarterly. Direct deposit lands on the scheduled day; a cheque takes longer to arrive. Check the CRA's benefit payment dates page for the exact days, and My Account for your own next payment. Payments stop if your return is not filed, so file every year even with no income.

Ottawa is in Ontario, so sales tax is 13% HST, the federal GST harmonised with the provincial part, charged on most goods and services in 2025 and 2026. There is no separate city sales tax. Some items are zero-rated or exempt, such as basic groceries, and a few carry a point-of-sale rebate of the provincial part. Ottawa property tax is a different tax, set by the city on your assessed value.

No. Public transit fares are exempt from GST and HST, so GO Train and GO Bus tickets, Presto loads, monthly passes and municipal transit fares carry no tax. The exemption covers scheduled local and commuter service, not charter buses, sightseeing tours or intercity coach and rail tickets, which are taxable. Taxi and airport shuttle trips are taxable as well. An employer-paid transit pass has its own treatment as a taxable benefit on a T4.

All of it. No threshold lets cash go unreported: tips, side jobs, weekend work and cash sales are income the moment you earn them, and the CRA can reassess unreported amounts with penalties and interest. Keep a log of dates, amounts and payers, and deposit takings so records reconcile. Self-employed cash earnings go on Form T2125 with your T1 return; cash tips earned as an employee are employment income, not business income, and belong on the other-employment-income line of the T1 instead.
