The Language of Regina Tax Filing, Explained

T1 General

T2 Corporate Return
The corporate income tax return every incorporated Canadian business must file.
GST/HST Return
The sales-tax return businesses file to remit GST/HST collected, net of input tax credits.
Regina: Our Analysis

Regina stacks the provincial government, potash head offices, steel and a growing ag-tech scene. Corporate files manage Saskatchewan's separate 6% PST — which, unlike GST, applies to many services and returns no input credits — while claiming the 1% small business rate on the province's distinctive $600,000 limit. Ag-tech startups add SR&ED claims and the Saskatchewan Technology Start-up Incentive for their investors.

Things We've Learned Doing Regina Work

What does an accountant check first when a Regina file lands on the desk? The same short list every time — and it starts with the provincial side.

Sales tax comes first, before anything else on the file. Saskatchewan charges 5% GST plus 6% PST filed separately with the province. PST applies to some services that are GST-exempt, which is a common source of assessment errors. A Regina business that sets this up wrong at the start is usually still unwinding it years later.

Saskatchewan applies a 1% small business rate on the first $600,000 of active business income — a higher threshold than the federal $500,000 limit. Read that alongside your year-end date and it changes the calculus on when to invoice, when to buy equipment, and how much to leave in the company. Every Regina file we prepare starts from that reality.

Payroll setup done properly means registration, a remittance calendar, and the provincial levy, in that order. Saskatchewan levies no employer health tax. We set all of it up together for Regina employers so nothing surfaces mid-year as a surprise.

There is a standing list we run every Saskatchewan client through at year-end: Saskatchewan Technology Start-up Incentive, Saskatchewan Manufacturing and Processing Exporter Tax Incentive. Most items will not apply to most businesses — but the ones that do apply tend to have been missed for years. It is the first thing we walk Regina owners through.

A city's tax questions are downstream of its industries. In Regina that means agriculture, potash and uranium mining, energy and manufacturing, and it means a tax consultant here spends most of the year on the filing patterns those sectors produce.

Ready to hand this off? Send your documents from wherever you are in the country — we charge the same fixed fee in every market, and only invoice after you have looked over the completed file. That is the backdrop for every Regina engagement we take on.

Case Study 1

Scaled To 81 Staff With $70,000 Of Working Capital Freed — Electronics Assembler, Regina

Growth at an electronics assembler in Regina, Saskatchewan had outrun the back office. Payroll obligations from another province applied to local staff by an out-of-province provider broke first. Headcount reached 81 with $70,000 of cash freed.

An electronics assembler in Regina, Saskatchewan was growing fast, with headcount reaching 81 in eighteen months. The back office had not kept up. Payroll obligations from another province applied to local staff by an out-of-province provider was the first thing to break. We assessed and claimed Saskatchewan Technology Start-up Incentive alongside the federal return. We built the compliance calendar for the size the business was becoming rather than the size it had been. The business reached 81 staff with no missed remittance and no late filing. $70,000 of working capital was freed in the process.

Case Study 2

Filed On Time From A Standing Start, $91,000 Penalty Avoided — Mining Services Supplier, Regina

A mining services supplier in Regina, Saskatchewan was 4 weeks from a deadline. The file also carried provincial sales tax collected but never remitted on the separate SK return. Filing complete and on time avoided roughly $91,000 in penalties.

A mining services supplier in Regina, Saskatchewan came to us 4 weeks before its filing deadline. The file came with provincial sales tax collected but never remitted on the separate SK return. A late filing would have triggered a penalty of roughly $91,000 before interest. We worked backwards from the deadline. We assessed and claimed Saskatchewan Manufacturing and Processing Exporter Tax Incentive alongside the federal return. We prioritised the items that actually gated the filing and deferred everything that did not. The return was filed on time and complete. The $91,000 penalty never arose, and the compliance calendar we set means the next deadline is scheduled rather than discovered.

Case Study 3

$715,000 Sheltered By The Lifetime Capital Gains Exemption — Furniture Manufacturer, Regina

A furniture manufacturer in Regina, Saskatchewan was preparing to sell. However, no valuation on file to support the price the parties had agreed disqualified the shares. Purification sheltered $715,000 under the exemption.

A furniture manufacturer in Regina, Saskatchewan had an offer on the table and 34 months to close. The shares did not qualify for the capital gains exemption. No valuation on file to support the price the parties had agreed was part of the reason. We purified the corporation so the shares met the qualifying tests. We separated the federal GST and SK provincial sales tax streams, reconciled both to the sales ledger, and filed the corrected provincial returns. All of it was done well ahead of the closing date. The sale closed on schedule with $715,000 sheltered by the lifetime capital gains exemption across the shareholders.

Case Study 4

Remuneration Review Saved $54,000 Across Corporate And Personal Returns — Oilfield Services Company, Regina

A remuneration review at an oilfield services company in Regina, Saskatchewan saved $54,000 across the corporate and personal returns. It found input tax credits claimed against SK provincial tax, which is not recoverable the way GST is.

Nothing was wrong at an oilfield services company in Regina, Saskatchewan. The filings were on time and accurate. What they were not was planned. Input tax credits claimed against SK provincial tax, which is not recoverable the way GST is had never been reviewed. We recalculated the corporate tax at the 10% combined small business rate and rebased the instalments on the current year. We ran the numbers across both the corporate and personal returns, so the saving was real rather than deferred into someone else's hands. $54,000 came off the combined corporate and personal tax bill, and the structure holds for future years without further work.

Case Study 5

Notice Of Objection Allowed In Full, $127,000 Reversed — Plastics Moulder, Regina

A $127,000 reassessment landed at a plastics moulder in Regina, Saskatchewan. It rested on instalments still calculated on a year the business had long outgrown. The objection was allowed in full.

A plastics moulder in Regina, Saskatchewan had been reassessed for $127,000. 20 days were left on the objection deadline. The reassessment rested on instalments still calculated on a year the business had long outgrown. We filed the objection inside the deadline with a complete submission rather than a placeholder. Alongside it, we assessed and claimed Saskatchewan Technology Start-up Incentive alongside the federal return. The appeals officer allowed the objection in full. $127,000 was reversed and the account returned to a nil balance.

Case Study 6

$25,500 Credit Claim Filed And Accepted Without Adjustment — Dairy Operation, Regina

A dairy operation in Regina, Saskatchewan had never tested its work against the eligibility rules. The resulting $25,500 claim was accepted without adjustment.

A dairy operation in Regina, Saskatchewan assumed the credits did not apply to a business its size. Saskatchewan incentives claimed by competitors and never by this business meant they had applied all along. We identified the qualifying activity and built the documentation to support it. Then we assessed and claimed Saskatchewan Manufacturing and Processing Exporter Tax Incentive alongside the federal return. $25,500 recovered. Because the eligibility analysis is on file, the same claim can be repeated each year with a fraction of the effort.

Regina Tax Filing Questions We Hear Most Often

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does a tax accountant in Regina cost?

Corporate tax filing starts at $90 and monthly bookkeeping at $10, the same fixed rates we charge nationally. Regina businesses pay no location premium, and the quote is agreed before work starts. See the full pricing breakdown.

Do I need to meet my Regina accountant in person?

No. Everything runs through a secure portal with e-signatures, so documents never travel by mail and nothing is lost in transit. Clients across Regina complete an entire filing without a single in-person meeting, though calls are always available.

Which tax deadlines apply to Regina businesses?

Corporate T2 returns are due six months after your fiscal year-end, with any balance owing payable within two or three months depending on your CCPC status. Personal T1 returns are due April 30, and June 15 for the self-employed. GST/HST depends on your filing frequency.

Can you handle both my corporate and personal returns?

Yes, and doing both together is where most of the planning value sits. Salary-versus-dividend mix, shareholder loans and RRSP room interact across the two returns, and treating them separately is how owners overpay. Explore all our services.

What if my books are behind by several years?

That is routine work for us. We rebuild the ledger year by year, file the outstanding returns in sequence, and where eligible apply to the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties and interest.

Are you taking on new clients in Regina?

Yes, we are actively taking on new corporate and personal clients in Regina, including mid-season transfers from another accountant. Transferring is straightforward and we request the prior files on your behalf.

What industries do you serve in Regina?

Construction, healthcare and medical practices, restaurants, e-commerce, real estate, transportation, professional services, technology startups and registered non-profits. Each carries a distinct deduction profile. See our industry specialisms.

How do I switch to your firm from my current accountant?

Tell us who currently holds your files and we handle the professional handover, including requesting working papers and prior-year returns. There is no gap in your compliance and no awkward conversation required on your side.

What is the deadline for filing corporate taxes in Regina?

In Regina, corporate tax returns (T2) are due within six months of the corporation's fiscal year-end. If you owe tax, the balance must be paid within 2 or 3 months of the year-end.

How much do tax accountants in Regina charge?

Our personal tax filing services in Regina start from $25, and corporate tax returns start from $90, offered under our 100% Risk-Free price match guarantee.

Does your accounting firm handle CRA audits for clients in Regina?

Yes! We provide direct CRA audit defense and representation services for businesses and individuals throughout Saskatchewan and across Canada.

Do you have an office in Regina?

We do not have a storefront in Regina. Documents are exchanged on secure cloud software and everything is signed electronically, and the fee is the same in Regina as anywhere else in Canada, with no location premium. Our head office is at 381 Front St W, Toronto, and you can reach the team on +1-416-619-0068.

What do Regina businesses need to know about sales tax?

Saskatchewan charges 5% GST plus 6% PST filed separately with the province. PST applies to some services that are GST-exempt, which is a common source of assessment errors. Every Regina file we prepare starts from that reality.

How is an incorporated business taxed in Saskatchewan?

Saskatchewan applies a 1% small business rate on the first $600,000 of active business income — a higher threshold than the federal $500,000 limit. For a Regina business, that is the ground floor of the filing.

What Canadians Search About Regina

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

File a T1 return for the year, sending it electronically with CRA-certified software or mailing a paper return. Gather your slips and receipts first and check them against the ones listed in My Account. For the 2025 tax year the filing and payment deadline was 30 April 2026, or 15 June 2026 to file if you or your spouse were self-employed, with payment still due 30 April 2026. CRA online filing for 2025 returns closes 29 January 2027.

Most people file electronically with software the CRA approves for NETFILE, or have a preparer send the return through EFILE. Paper filing is still accepted and takes far longer to process. Before starting, set up My Account, confirm your direct deposit details, and download the slips the CRA already holds so your return matches its records. For the 2025 tax year the deadline was 30 April 2026, with any balance owing due the same day; a 2025 return not yet filed is late, so file it now to stop the late-filing penalty growing.

As the rules stand for the 2025 tax year filed in 2026, the late-filing penalty is 5% of the balance owing plus 1% of that balance for each full month the return is late, to a maximum of 12 months, so 17% at worst. It rises to 10% plus 2% per month for up to 20 months, a 50% maximum, but only where the CRA formally demanded the return and had already charged a late-filing penalty for any of the three preceding tax years. Interest compounds daily.

Pay through your bank's online banking by adding the CRA as a payee and choosing the right account and year, through My Payment with a debit card, by pre-authorised debit scheduled in My Account, by credit card through a third-party provider that charges its own fee, or at a bank counter with a remittance voucher. For 2025 personal returns the payment deadline was 30 April 2026, including for the self-employed, and interest runs daily on anything unpaid after that.

EI benefits are taxable income. Service Canada withholds income tax before each payment reaches you, and the total benefits plus the tax withheld appear on your T4E for the year. That withholding follows a basic calculation rather than your full marginal rate, so people who also worked during the year often end up with a balance owing at filing. Asking Service Canada to withhold more, or setting money aside yourself, avoids a surprise. Higher-income claimants can also have to repay part of their regular benefits through the return.

Gather your slips and receipts, then use NETFILE certified software and its auto-fill feature to pull in the slips the CRA already holds. Add what the CRA cannot see, such as self-employment income, medical expenses, donations and child care, review the summary line by line, and file electronically. For the 2025 tax year the deadline was 30 April 2026, or 15 June 2026 where you or your spouse were self-employed, with any balance still due 30 April 2026.

An online return is normally assessed in about two weeks, and a non-resident return can take up to 16 weeks. Past that, the usual causes are a review asking you for receipts, slips that do not match what the CRA holds, a return filed on paper, direct deposit details that no longer work, or the refund being applied against a balance you owe. CRA My Account shows the assessment date and where the money went.

Federal income tax is the share of income tax that goes to the federal government, calculated on taxable income using federal brackets and then reduced by federal credits. Your province or territory levies its own income tax on the same income, which is why a paycheque outside Quebec shows one blended deduction rather than two. Employers estimate both when withholding. For your own figure, read the federal tax line on your assessed T1 rather than a rate table.

Commonly a tax preparer, tax accountant or tax specialist. Titles are not standardised in Canada: some preparers hold an accounting designation, others are bookkeepers, tax technicians or lawyers who focus on tax. What matters more than the label is that the person is registered with the CRA to file electronically for clients, carries a business number, quotes the fee in writing, and signs the return as preparer where required.

Yes. Licensed daycare, nursery school, day camp and after-school care generally qualify as child care expenses, deducted from income rather than claimed as a credit. The lower-income spouse normally has to make the claim, and the deduction is capped by the child's age and by that spouse's earned income. You need receipts showing the provider's name and, for an individual caregiver, their social insurance number. The CRA's child care expenses page carries the current limits.

Gross annual income is what you earn before any deduction. On a salary, use the yearly figure in your employment agreement. Paid hourly, multiply your rate by the hours you work in a week, then by the weeks you work in the year. Paid by period, multiply gross pay per period by the number of pay periods in the year. Self-employed, use total revenue before expenses. Then add tips, bonuses, interest, rental income and support payments.

Yes. Your return asks for your spouse or common-law partner's name, social insurance number and net income, even when that income is nil and even when they file a return of their own. The CRA uses the combined figure to calculate income-tested credits and benefits and to check claims such as the spouse or common-law partner amount. Their income is not added to yours as taxable income; it is disclosed on the identification page only.
