Student Tax Return: Our Analysis

T1 returns are due April 30, and June 15 for the self-employed — though any balance owing still accrues interest from April 30. Because the fee is fixed and affordable, the economics stay predictable whether your file is simple or messy.

From the Desk of Your Accountant

Every week brings another round of student tax return work, and every week the same few issues account for most of the friction. Consider this a working accountant's short list for Student Tax Return.

If a client remembers only one point from this page, it should be this one: Medical expenses can be claimed for any twelve-month period ending in the tax year, so choosing the window deliberately often produces a larger credit than a calendar-year claim.

Pair that with the next rule and most of the confusion around student tax return disappears: Unused RRSP contribution room carries forward indefinitely, and a contribution made in a high-income year is worth materially more than the same dollar contributed in a low-income year. One more rule deserves attention, mostly because ignoring it is expensive in ways that only show up later. Moving expenses are deductible where the new home is at least 40 kilometres closer to the new work location, and the deduction is limited to income earned at the new location.

So where does that leave you? In most cases, with a decision about whether to work through student tax return alone or hand the moving parts to a tax consultant who tracks them for a living. Gathering the following ahead of time turns the first student tax return conversation from fact-finding into decision-making.

We keep the commercial side simple. The fee is fixed and agreed in advance, the file is reviewed with you before filing, and you pay after the service — in that order, every time.

What Clients Ask Us About Student Tax Return

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does Student Tax Return cost in Canada?

Student Tax Return starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for Student Tax Return?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does Student Tax Return take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We are a cloud-based practice serving every province and territory, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for Student Tax Return?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes Student Tax Return different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in Student Tax Return services?

Our student tax return services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with Student Tax Return services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

What goes wrong most often with student tax return?

In our files, this is the deciding factor: Unused RRSP contribution room carries forward indefinitely, and a contribution made in a high-income year is worth materially more than the same dollar contributed in a low-income year. A tax specialist applies it to your numbers before submission.

What records do I need before starting student tax return?

The honest answer comes down to one rule. Moving expenses are deductible where the new home is at least 40 kilometres closer to the new work location, and the deduction is limited to income earned at the new location. That is the part we verify before anything is filed.

What Canadians Search About Student Tax Return

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

Most people pay through online or telephone banking, adding the CRA as a payee and choosing the exact account and year, such as a personal balance owing or an instalment. The alternatives are CRA My Payment with a debit card, pre-authorised debit scheduled in My Account, a credit card or e-transfer through a third-party provider that charges its own fee, or paying at your bank with a remittance voucher. For the 2025 tax year the balance was due 30 April 2026.

Income tax is tax charged on the income you earn in a year, levied by both the federal government and your province or territory. Rates are graduated, so successive slices of taxable income are taxed at higher rates, and credits such as the basic personal amount reduce the tax calculated. Employment income is taxed through payroll withholding and settled on your T1 return. Quebec residents also file a separate provincial return with Revenu Quebec.

Yes. Most people file electronically through NETFILE using CRA-certified software, which submits the return directly and confirms receipt immediately. Filing online is also what makes a fast refund possible: for 2025 returns filed in 2026 the CRA service standard is about two weeks online, against a considerably longer standard for a paper return, and registering direct deposit removes the cheque step. CRA online filing for 2025 returns opened 23 February 2026 and closes 29 January 2027.

A balance owing means the tax withheld or paid by instalments during the year came to less than the tax your return calculates. Common causes are two employers each withholding as though theirs was your only job, self-employment or gig income with nothing withheld, investment or rental income, an RRSP or RRIF withdrawal where only the base amount was held back, pension and OAS payments taken without deductions, or a benefit you have to repay.

Online filing for the 2025 tax year opened on 23 February 2026 and stays open until 29 January 2027. You can gather documents and prepare the return earlier, but the CRA will not accept an electronic return before it opens, and employer and investment slips are often not all issued until late February or March. The deadline was 30 April 2026, or 15 June 2026 if you or your spouse were self-employed, with payment still due 30 April.

Less than your top bracket suggests. Canada taxes income in bands, so only the income inside each band pays that band's rate. Federal rates for 2026 begin at 14% and rise through 20.5%, 26% and 29% to 33%, with your province adding its own brackets on top. CPP and EI come off employment income as well. The federal basic personal amount shelters a first slice entirely, which is why your average rate stays below the marginal one.

Commodity tax is the practitioner's term for taxes charged on transactions in goods and services rather than on income. In Canada it covers GST at 5% for 2025 and 2026, the HST in participating provinces, provincial sales taxes, Quebec's QST, and excise and fuel levies. The seller collects the tax and remits it to the government, so the business acts as collector while the buyer ultimately bears the cost.

Net rental income counts as earned income when the CRA works out your RRSP contribution room, so a profitable rental adds to next year's room. Your room is 18% of the prior year's earned income up to the annual dollar limit, $33,810 for 2026 and $32,490 for 2025, less any pension adjustment. Rental losses reduce earned income. Check your latest notice of assessment or CRA My Account for the room actually available.

Property tax is municipal, so the bill comes from your city or town rather than the CRA. Most municipalities offer an online property tax account showing bills, balances and payment history, opened with the roll number printed on an earlier bill; otherwise their revenue office will send a copy. Property tax on the home you live in is not deductible, but it is a deductible expense against rental or business income.

Tax preparation fees are deductible when they relate to earning income. A self-employed person or a partner deducts the accounting fee on the business statement, Form T2125, and a rental owner deducts it on the rental statement, Form T776. A salaried employee with a straightforward T1 generally cannot claim it. Fees paid to prepare an objection or an appeal of an assessment are also deductible, and fees for investment advice may qualify as carrying charges.

Zero-rated supplies are taxable at a rate of zero, so you charge no GST/HST but can still claim input tax credits on the costs of making them; basic groceries, prescription drugs and most exports sit here. Exempt supplies are outside the tax entirely: you charge nothing and cannot claim input tax credits on related costs, which covers most residential rent, many health services and financial services. The distinction decides whether the tax on your own purchases is recoverable.

Yes. Diapers are taxable rather than zero-rated groceries, so the federal 5% GST applies across Canada. Ontario runs a point-of-sale rebate that takes the provincial part of the HST off children's diapers, so an Ontario till charges 5% instead of 13%. Provinces with their own sales tax apply their own exemption lists, which differ from one another. The temporary federal break that covered diapers over the 2024 to 2025 holiday period has ended.
