Brant: Our Analysis

Brant County's boom around Paris mixes manufacturing spillover from Brantford with working farms and a wave of new-build construction. Manufacturers claim the Ontario Made Manufacturing Investment Tax Credit and accelerated capital cost allowance; farm families plan around the $1,000,000+ lifetime capital gains exemption on qualified farm property; and builders run T5018 subcontractor chains under Ontario's 13% HST.

What a Tax Preparation Specialist Checks First in Brant

A return prepared in Brant carries Ontario rules on top of the federal ones, and the provincial layer is where corners get cut. These notes exist so yours don't.

What must a Brant business get right first? In our files, the answer is nearly always the same. Ontario uses a single 13% HST administered by the CRA, so you file one combined return rather than separate federal and provincial ones. Charge it correctly, track it separately, remit it on time — in that order.

Every year we run the same exercise with incorporated Brant clients: hold the provincial rate picture up against the draft numbers. Ontario applies a 3.2% small business rate on the first $500,000 of active business income, giving a 12.2% combined federal-provincial rate. The planning window closes with the fiscal year, so the review has to happen while there is still time to act.

Hiring in Brant adds one more line to the payroll setup. Employer Health Tax (EHT) applies above a $1,000,000 annual payroll exemption for eligible employers.

Do any of Ontario Innovation Tax Credit, Ontario Made Manufacturing Investment Tax Credit, Ontario Regional Opportunities Investment Tax Credit touch your business? The honest answer: it depends entirely on your circumstances. What we can say from the files we see is that Ontario owners far more often skip the question than receive a no. Every Brant file we prepare starts from that reality.

Local knowledge in tax work is really sector knowledge. Brant runs on finance, professional services, manufacturing, technology and healthcare, so that is where a tax expert's pattern recognition gets built — and where it pays off on your return.

The thing your postal code will never change is our price. We serve all of Canada at the same fixed fee — no location premium — and payment only happens after you have reviewed the finished work. That single point drives more Brant conversations than any other.

Brant Tax & Accounting Case Studies

See how our expert Brant tax and accounting services have helped Canadian businesses save money and stay compliant.

Case Study 1

Intergenerational Transfer Completed With $745,000 Deferred — Specialty Chemicals Producer, Brant

A family transfer at a specialty chemicals producer in Brant, Ontario would have been fully taxable. The reason was a minute book with no resolutions behind a decade of dividends. Restructuring deferred $745,000.

A generational transfer at a specialty chemicals producer in Brant, Ontario had been discussed for years without a plan. A minute book with no resolutions behind a decade of dividends meant the transfer as contemplated would have been fully taxable. We assessed and claimed Ontario Innovation Tax Credit alongside the federal return. We sequenced the steps so each one was complete and documented before the next depended on it. $745,000 of tax was deferred through the transfer, and the successor generation took over a corporation whose records stood up to review.

Case Study 2

$18,000 Of Penalties And Interest Cancelled On Relief — Veterinary Hospital, Brant

A veterinary hospital in Brant, Ontario was carrying $18,000 of penalties and interest. The charges arose from instalments still calculated on a year the business had long outgrown. A relief application cancelled that amount.

An assessment of $18,000 landed at a veterinary hospital in Brant, Ontario following a desk review. It turned on instalments still calculated on a year the business had long outgrown. The auditor had not seen the records behind it. We rebuilt the sales ledger by customer location, applied the correct place-of-supply rate to each stream, and filed the adjusted HST returns. We then set out the legislative basis for the position alongside the documents supporting it. $18,000 of penalties and interest was cancelled under the taxpayer relief provisions, and the underlying assessment was adjusted to match the filed position.

Case Study 3

$92,000 Of Working Capital Freed From The Tax Cycle — Boutique Law Firm, Brant

A boutique law firm in Brant, Ontario was profitable and permanently short of cash. Behind the gap sat out-of-province sales billed at the ON rate instead of the customer’s. Restructuring the tax cycle freed $92,000.

A boutique law firm in Brant, Ontario was profitable on paper and short of cash every month. Out-of-province sales billed at the ON rate instead of the customer’s explained most of the gap. We registered the provincial payroll account, caught up the outstanding remittances, and applied for relief on the penalty. We also built a thirteen-week cash view so tax payments stopped competing with payroll for the same dollars. $92,000 was released back into working capital. Remittances have been on time every period since, and the forecast shows the tax outflow before it lands.

Case Study 4

Audit Defence Closed In 6 Weeks, $129,000 Cleared — Millwork Shop, Brant

A millwork shop in Brant, Ontario was under review. The issue was sector-specific exposure the previous accountant had not seen before. The file closed in 6 weeks with $129,000 of proposed tax cleared.

A millwork shop in Brant, Ontario was selected for review. Sector-specific exposure the previous accountant had not seen before had shown up in the CRA's automated matching. The proposed adjustment on its ON tax and accounting file came to $129,000. We assessed and claimed Ontario Made Manufacturing Investment Tax Credit alongside the federal return. Every figure in the response traced to a source record the auditor could verify without asking a second question. The review closed with no change. $129,000 of proposed tax came off the table, and the documentation now in place makes the next review a short one.

Case Study 5

$87,000 Of Arbitrary Assessments Vacated After 6 Years — Optometry Practice, Brant

The CRA had assessed an optometry practice in Brant, Ontario on estimates across 6 unfiled years. Real filings vacated $87,000 of that tax.

6 years of unfiled returns had turned into notional assessments at an optometry practice in Brant, Ontario. Underneath lay 13% HST charged on every sale regardless of where the customer was located. Collections had already started. We recalculated the corporate tax at the 12.2% combined small business rate and rebased the instalments on the current year. We then filed every outstanding year in chronological order so the CRA could vacate the notional assessments cleanly. All 6 years were accepted as filed. $87,000 of arbitrarily assessed tax was vacated, collections action stopped, and the account is current for the first time in 6 years.

Case Study 6

3-Week Turnaround Beat The Deadline And Saved $69,000 — Wealth Management Practice, Brant

A 3-week rebuild at a wealth management practice in Brant, Ontario got the filing in with 13 days to spare. That avoided $69,000 in penalties.

A wealth management practice in Brant, Ontario was weeks away from the deadline for its ON tax and accounting file. Behind that sat a provincial payroll levy that had never been registered for or remitted. The exposure if the date slipped was around $69,000. We assessed and claimed Ontario Innovation Tax Credit alongside the federal return. The filing went in complete rather than provisional, so there was no amended return to follow. Filed with 13 days to spare. $69,000 in late-filing penalties avoided, and the working papers are ready for the following year.

Before You Call: Brant Tax Filing FAQs

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does a tax accountant in Brant cost?

Corporate tax filing starts at $90 and monthly bookkeeping at $10, the same fixed rates we charge nationally. Brant businesses pay no location premium, and the quote is agreed before work starts. See the full pricing breakdown.

Do I need to meet my Brant accountant in person?

No. Everything runs through a secure portal with e-signatures, so documents never travel by mail and nothing is lost in transit. Clients across Brant complete an entire filing without a single in-person meeting, though calls are always available.

Which tax deadlines apply to Brant businesses?

Corporate T2 returns are due six months after your fiscal year-end, with any balance owing payable within two or three months depending on your CCPC status. Personal T1 returns are due April 30, and June 15 for the self-employed. GST/HST depends on your filing frequency.

Can you handle both my corporate and personal returns?

Yes, and doing both together is where most of the planning value sits. Salary-versus-dividend mix, shareholder loans and RRSP room interact across the two returns, and treating them separately is how owners overpay. Explore all our services.

What if my books are behind by several years?

That is routine work for us. We rebuild the ledger year by year, file the outstanding returns in sequence, and where eligible apply to the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties and interest.

Are you taking on new clients in Brant?

Yes, we are actively taking on new corporate and personal clients in Brant, including mid-season transfers from another accountant. Transferring is straightforward and we request the prior files on your behalf.

What industries do you serve in Brant?

Construction, healthcare and medical practices, restaurants, e-commerce, real estate, transportation, professional services, technology startups and registered non-profits. Each carries a distinct deduction profile. See our industry specialisms.

How do I switch to your firm from my current accountant?

Tell us who currently holds your files and we handle the professional handover, including requesting working papers and prior-year returns. There is no gap in your compliance and no awkward conversation required on your side.

What is the deadline for filing corporate taxes in Brant?

In Brant, corporate tax returns (T2) are due within six months of the corporation's fiscal year-end. If you owe tax, the balance must be paid within 2 or 3 months of the year-end.

How much do tax accountants in Brant charge?

Our personal tax filing services in Brant start from $25, and corporate tax returns start from $90, offered under our 100% Risk-Free price match guarantee.

Does your accounting firm handle CRA audits for clients in Brant?

Yes! We provide direct CRA audit defense and representation services for businesses and individuals throughout Ontario and across Canada.

Do you have an office in Brant?

We do not have a storefront in Brant. Documents are exchanged on secure cloud software and everything is signed electronically, and the fee is the same in Brant as anywhere else in Canada, with no location premium. Our head office is at 381 Front St W, Toronto, and you can reach the team on +1-416-619-0068.

How does sales tax work for businesses in Brant?

Ontario uses a single 13% HST administered by the CRA, so you file one combined return rather than separate federal and provincial ones. Brant clients feel this one directly on the first return we file together.

What corporate tax rates apply to a Brant corporation?

Ontario applies a 3.2% small business rate on the first $500,000 of active business income, giving a 12.2% combined federal-provincial rate. We build every Brant engagement around that fact.

Searched Questions About Brant

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

Sales tax in Ontario is 13% HST for 2026, made up of the 5% federal GST and an 8% provincial share, and it has applied at that rate since 1 July 2010. There is no separate Ontario retail sales tax on top, and the CRA administers the whole 13%. Basic groceries and prescription drugs are zero-rated, so they carry nothing. Income tax is a separate calculation with its own federal and Ontario brackets.

Paper returns go to the CRA tax centre that serves your province or territory of residence, not to one national address. The correct address is printed in the paper return package and listed on canada.ca under mailing addresses for individual returns, and it differs for non-residents and for business returns. Filing electronically is much faster: for the 2025 tax year the CRA aims to issue a refund on an online return in about two weeks, against a considerably longer standard on paper.

Personal income tax deadlines are federal, so Ontario residents follow the same dates as everyone else: 30 April 2026 for the 2025 return and any balance owing, and 15 June 2026 to file if you are self-employed, with payment still due 30 April 2026. Property tax is a separate matter, set and billed by your municipality on its own instalment schedule, so check your city or town for those dates.

You can file a Canadian personal return at no cost using CRA-certified free tax software, which sends the return through NETFILE. Volunteer clinics run by community organisations also prepare simple returns free of charge for people with modest income. Paper filing costs only postage. Free software suits straightforward employment and pension income; self-employment, rental or foreign property usually needs a preparer. CRA online filing for 2025 returns opened 23 February 2026 and closes 29 January 2027.

Ontario's sales tax is 13% HST, the figure on almost every receipt. Income tax is layered: federal brackets for 2026 start at 14% and climb through 20.5%, 26% and 29% to 33%, with Ontario's own bracket rates and surtax added on top, so your combined marginal rate is higher than either government's alone. Corporations face an Ontario combined general rate of 26.5%, and a provincial small business rate of 3.2% that drops to 2.2% from 1 July 2026.

Yes. Tips and gratuities are taxable income in Ontario, whether they arrive through payroll, a card terminal, a tip pool or straight cash. Where your employer controls and distributes them, they are normally run through payroll with income tax, CPP and EI withheld. Tips paid to you directly are yours to report on your own return. Keep a running daily record, because unreported tips are a common focus of CRA review in hospitality.

A GST cheque is the GST/HST credit, a tax-free quarterly payment from the CRA that offsets sales tax for people with modest incomes. You do not apply for it: filing your T1 return is the application, and the CRA works out entitlement from your family net income, marital status and number of children. Payments arrive in July, October, January and April, by direct deposit or cheque. File every year even with no income, or the payments stop.

Payroll deductions are calculated as if your current pay rate continued all year, using the credits you claimed on the personal tax credits form you gave your employer. Deductions look low if you started mid-year, work part-time or irregular hours, over-claimed credits, or hold two jobs where each employer applies the basic personal amount and neither sees the other's pay. Income without withholding, such as self-employment or investments, adds to what you owe at filing.

Not alone. A municipal council sets the property tax rate when it votes the annual budget and levy, and the mayor holds one vote, though a few provinces give mayors added budget powers that council can still override. Your bill is the assessed value of the property multiplied by that rate, plus an education portion the province sets. Assessments come from a provincial assessment body, not from the mayor.

For 2026 an employer matches CPP at 5.95% on earnings between $3,500 and $74,600, up to $4,230.45 per employee, plus CPP2 at 4% on earnings between $74,600 and $85,000, up to $416. Employment Insurance costs 1.4 times the employee premium, which is 2.282% of insurable earnings up to $68,900, a maximum of $1,572.30. Provincial payroll or workers' compensation levies sit on top of that.

MAT stands for Municipal Accommodation Tax, a local levy some Canadian municipalities charge on short-term accommodation such as hotel stays and short-term rentals. The operator collects it and remits it to the city or its tourism partner, which is why it sits as a separate line beside GST or HST on your bill. Rates and what counts as covered accommodation are set municipality by municipality, so check that city's own accommodation tax page.

Medical expenses cannot be carried forward to a future year the way tuition or a capital loss can. What you can do is choose the period the claim covers, and that period does not have to match the calendar year, so expenses from late in the previous year can be grouped with this year's and clear the income-based threshold once instead of twice. Pick the period that captures the largest total, then claim all of it on one return.
