Client Accounting Services: Our Analysis

Compilation engagements now follow CSRS 4200, which sets out the basis-of-accounting note every lender expects to see attached to the statements. Our client accounting services engagement is priced as a economical flat fee, so the cost is known before the work starts.

Observations From Our Client Accounting Services Files

What actually separates a clean client accounting services file from a messy one? A working accountant would point to a short list of rules, and these notes walk through it.

The first thing worth pinning down is this: Capital cost allowance is permissive, not mandatory. A corporation can claim less than the maximum in a low-income year and leave the undepreciated capital cost in the pool for a year when the deduction is worth more, provided the schedule carries that decision forward consistently.

Right behind it comes a rule owners rarely hear about until it bites: A fiscal year-end cannot be changed by simply closing the books on a new date; subsection 249.1(7) requires the CRA’s concurrence. The short transitional period is a tax year in its own right and needs its own return and its own statements. And on timing: The CRA requires business records to be kept for six years from the end of the tax year they relate to, in a form that allows the return to be verified. Where records cannot support the return, the CRA is entitled to assess on its own estimate — and the burden of disproving that estimate falls on the taxpayer.

What this means in practice: the rules themselves are public, but applying them to your situation is where an accountant earns the fee. Two files can read the same rules and land in very different places. To move quickly, have your ledger exports, bank statements and prior filings ready when we start.

You will see the finished work before it goes anywhere — review-before-filing is standard here, not an add-on. The fee is fixed up front, and nothing is payable until the service is done.

Client Accounting Services Frequently Asked Questions

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does Client Accounting Services cost in Canada?

Client Accounting Services starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for Client Accounting Services?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does Client Accounting Services take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We are a cloud-based practice serving every province and territory, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for Client Accounting Services?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes Client Accounting Services different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in Client Accounting Services?

Our client accounting services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with Client Accounting Services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

How do I know if my business actually needs client accounting services?

In our files, this is the deciding factor: The CRA requires business records to be kept for six years from the end of the tax year they relate to, in a form that allows the return to be verified. Where records cannot support the return, the CRA is entitled to assess on its own estimate — and the burden of disproving that estimate falls on the taxpayer. An accounting firm applies it to your numbers before submission.

What will you need from me to get client accounting services started?

The short answer comes straight from our working notes: A fiscal year-end cannot be changed by simply closing the books on a new date; subsection 249.1(7) requires the CRA’s concurrence. The short transitional period is a tax year in its own right and needs its own return and its own statements. How that plays out on your file depends on the specifics, which is exactly what the engagement is for.

Client Accounting Services: The Questions People Search

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

A tax return is the annual filing that reports your income, deductions and credits to the CRA so the final tax for the year can be settled. Payers withhold tax during the year and the return reconciles that against what you actually owe, producing either a refund or a balance to pay. For 2025 returns filed in 2026, refunds usually arrive in about two weeks for an online return, while a paper return runs on a considerably longer standard because it is handled manually.

Taxable income is what is left after you total the income the tax rules include and subtract the deductions you are allowed. Employment and self-employment earnings, most pensions, EI and CPP benefits, interest, dividends, rental profit, the taxable portion of capital gains, RRSP and RRIF withdrawals and most taxable benefits from work all go into the total. Tax is then calculated on that figure and reduced by non-refundable credits such as the basic personal amount.

The federal goods and services tax is 5% in 2026, and has been since it dropped from 6% to 5% on 1 January 2008. You pay the 5% on its own in Alberta, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon. In British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Quebec it sits alongside a separate provincial tax, and in the five participating provinces it is folded into the HST rate.

Divide the total by one plus the tax rate, then subtract that result from the total to get the tax. In Ontario at 13% HST divide by 1.13; in Nova Scotia at 14% from 1 April 2025 divide by 1.14; where only 5% GST applies divide by 1.05. Quebec is layered, because QST of 9.975% applies to the pre-GST price, giving a combined 14.975%, so divide by 1.14975 to reach the pre-tax amount.

A Canadian business can face corporate income tax federally and provincially, GST/HST or provincial sales tax on what it sells, payroll withholding with employer CPP and EI, property tax on premises it owns, and payroll or health levies in some provinces. An unincorporated business reports its profit on a T2125 with the owner's T1 instead of paying corporate tax. Which ones apply depends on structure, where you operate, and whether you have employees.

No. Revenue is income you have earned and belongs on the income statement, not among liabilities. Money taken before you deliver the goods or service is different: unearned or deferred revenue is a liability until you perform the work. Sales tax you collect is also a liability rather than revenue. Booking customer deposits straight to sales is a common error that overstates profit and distorts the figures on your GST/HST return.

Sign in to CRA My Account and open the tax returns and tax information slips sections. Slips your employers, banks and payers filed with the CRA appear there, including T4, T4A and T5, usually by late March for the previous year. You can also download notices of assessment, prior-year returns and your RRSP and TFSA room statements. Slips arrive at different times, so confirm everything you expect is listed before you file.

For your own tax information, ask for a personal information request through the federal ATIP online portal, or submit the government's request form to the CRA's access to information office. Name the years and the type of record - notices of assessment, audit working papers, collections notes - because a narrow request is answered faster. Check CRA My Account first: slips, notices and account balances are already there at no cost.

It is the mailing address the CRA holds for you, the one shown on your return and used for notices of assessment, benefit letters and cheques. Keep it current: mail sent to an old address still counts as delivered, and benefit payments can be held up when the CRA cannot reach you. Update it in My Account, by phone, or on your next return. A business address is tracked separately from a personal one.

A real CRA agent will ask you to confirm identifying details, including your social insurance number, once you have called them or after they reach you about a known file. What the CRA does not do is demand your SIN, banking details or a payment over a call you were not expecting, threaten arrest, or ask for gift cards or crypto. If a call feels wrong, hang up and phone the CRA back on a number from canada.ca.

From 1 October 2026, British Columbia applies 7% PST to several services that were previously untaxed: accounting and bookkeeping, architectural, engineering and geoscience, security and private investigation, and non-residential real estate services. Architectural, engineering and geoscience fees are taxed on 30% of the purchase price rather than the full amount. Providers not already collecting PST must register online, and can do so up to six months before their first taxable sale.

Check your status first. A genuine employee should have income tax, CPP and EI withheld and receive a T4, while an independent contractor gets no withholding and reports the income on a T2125 with their own instalments. If you are an employee and nothing is withheld, raise it with your employer, since the employer is liable for the deductions plus penalties. Either way the tax is still yours to pay, so set money aside rather than facing a large spring balance.
