Things We've Learned Doing International Tax Services Work

Every week brings another round of international tax services work, and every week the same few issues account for most of the friction. Consider this a working accountant's short list for International Tax Services.

Everything in international tax services hangs off a single anchor. The Canada–US treaty allocates taxing rights, but relief is not automatic. A foreign tax credit or treaty position has to be claimed on a filed return.

Just as important, though far less discussed: Departure from Canada triggers a deemed disposition of most property at fair market value. The resulting gain has to be reported on the final resident return. The third rule is where the real exposure hides. A payment to a non-resident for services performed in Canada is subject to 15 percent withholding under Regulation 105. That applies whether or not the non-resident ends up owing Canadian tax. A waiver has to be applied for before the payment is made, and the payer that withheld nothing is the one assessed.

Taken together, these rules explain why international tax services can rarely be treated as a do-it-once-and-forget exercise. An accountant watches how they interact across your specific facts, which is something no checklist can do. Before the first meeting, it helps to pull together the records that let an accountant see your situation whole.

The fee is fixed and agreed before any work starts, you review every figure, and payment happens only after the work is done.

International Tax Services Tax & Accounting Case Studies

See how our expert International Tax Services tax and accounting services have helped Canadian businesses save money and stay compliant.

Case Study 1

7 Years Filed, $71,000 Removed From The Assessed Balance — Mid-Year Emigrant, Burnaby

7 years of returns were outstanding at an emigrant who left Canada mid-year in Burnaby, British Columbia. That came on top of 25% withholding on gross Canadian rent where a section 216 election would have taxed only the net. Filing on real numbers removed $71,000 of assessed tax.

An emigrant who left Canada mid-year in Burnaby, British Columbia had not filed for 7 years. The CRA had issued arbitrary assessments. The business was carrying 25% withholding on gross Canadian rent where a section 216 election would have taxed only the net. That came on top of a growing interest balance. We started with the oldest year and worked forward so each year's closing balances fed the next. We filed the section 216 election with the supporting rental statements and recovered the excess withholding as a refund. We filed the years in sequence rather than all at once. Every year is now filed and assessed on actual figures. The notional assessments were vacated and $71,000 of the estimated balance came off, with a payment arrangement covering the rest.

Case Study 2

$16,500 Of Penalties And Interest Cancelled On Relief — US LLC Shareholder, Kitchener

A shareholder of a US LLC in Kitchener, Ontario was carrying $16,500 of penalties and interest. The charges arose from winters spent in the United States with the day count kept casually and no residency position documented anywhere. A relief application cancelled that amount.

An assessment of $16,500 landed at a shareholder of a US LLC in Kitchener, Ontario following a desk review. It turned on winters spent in the United States with the day count kept casually and no residency position documented anywhere. The auditor had not seen the records behind it. We restructured the US holding so the Canadian and US characterisations aligned, ending the double taxation going forward. We then set out the legislative basis for the position alongside the documents supporting it. $16,500 of penalties and interest was cancelled under the taxpayer relief provisions, and the underlying assessment was adjusted to match the filed position.

Case Study 3

Second-Province Expansion Handled, $128,000 Of Cash Released — Florida Property Owner, Windsor

A family with a Florida vacation property in Windsor, Ontario expanded into a second province. The file already carried US tax paid but no foreign tax credit claimed on the Canadian return. Every obligation was set up in advance and $128,000 of cash released.

Revenue at a family with a Florida vacation property in Windsor, Ontario was up sharply and cash was tighter than ever. Underneath it sat US tax paid but no foreign tax credit claimed on the Canadian return. We filed the outstanding T1135 disclosures through the Voluntary Disclosures Program, which eliminated the penalty exposure entirely. Every new obligation was set up before it was triggered, not after. That covered registration, remittance frequency and provincial filing. $128,000 of cash was released from the working capital cycle. The expansion completed with every registration and filing obligation covered from day one.

Case Study 4

$33,500 Credit Claim Filed And Accepted Without Adjustment — US Citizen in Canada, Kelowna

A US citizen living in Canada in Kelowna, British Columbia had never tested its work against the eligibility rules. The resulting $33,500 claim was accepted without adjustment.

A US citizen living in Canada in Kelowna, British Columbia assumed the credits did not apply to a business its size. US tax paid but no foreign tax credit claimed on the Canadian return meant they had applied all along. We identified the qualifying activity and built the documentation to support it. Then we aligned the Canadian and US reporting of the same income so the foreign tax credit claim carried support on both returns. $33,500 recovered. Because the eligibility analysis is on file, the same claim can be repeated each year with a fraction of the effort.

Case Study 5

Filed On Time From A Standing Start, $140,000 Penalty Avoided — Non-Resident Landlord, Toronto

A non-resident owning Canadian rental property in Toronto, Ontario was 7 weeks from a deadline. The file also carried dividends paid to a non-resident shareholder with nothing withheld, leaving the payer holding the liability. Filing complete and on time avoided roughly $140,000 in penalties.

A non-resident owning Canadian rental property in Toronto, Ontario came to us 7 weeks before its filing deadline. The file came with dividends paid to a non-resident shareholder with nothing withheld, leaving the payer holding the liability. A late filing would have triggered a penalty of roughly $140,000 before interest. We worked backwards from the deadline. We reconstructed the day count on both sides of the border and documented the residency and treaty position before either revenue authority asked. We prioritised the items that actually gated the filing and deferred everything that did not. The return was filed on time and complete. The $140,000 penalty never arose, and the compliance calendar we set means the next deadline is scheduled rather than discovered.

Case Study 6

Remittance Schedule Corrected, $120,000 Refunded — Canadian on US Payroll, Mississauga

Remittances at a Canadian with a US employer in Mississauga, Ontario were chronically late. It came down to a departure year filed as a normal resident return with no deemed disposition reported. Fixing the schedule refunded $120,000.

Remittances at a Canadian with a US employer in Mississauga, Ontario were consistently late by a few days. That was enough to trigger penalties every quarter. Behind it sat a departure year filed as a normal resident return with no deemed disposition reported. We applied the treaty rate to the dividend withholding, filed the NR4 return, and remitted the shortfall before the CRA assessed the payer for it. Then we moved the remittance dates into a scheduled process rather than a monthly decision. Penalties stopped from the following remittance onwards, and $120,000 of overpaid instalments was refunded.

Answers to Frequent International Tax Services Questions

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does International Tax Services cost in Canada?

International Tax Services starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for International Tax Services?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does International Tax Services take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We serve clients in every province and territory at the same fixed fees, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for International Tax Services?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes International Tax Services different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in International Tax Services?

Our international tax services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with International Tax Services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

How do I know if my business actually needs international tax services?

Here is what the rules actually say, stripped of the folklore: The Canada–US treaty allocates taxing rights, but relief is not automatic. A foreign tax credit or treaty position has to be claimed on a filed return. Our role as your tax practitioner is to apply that cleanly to your situation rather than to a hypothetical one.

What will you need from me to get international tax services started?

We get this one a lot, and the answer is more concrete than people expect. Non-residents earning Canadian rental income face 25% withholding on gross rent unless a section 216 election is filed. The election taxes the net instead. Bring your documents and we will show you where it lands in your numbers.

Commonly Searched International Tax Services Questions

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

File a T1 return for the year, sending it electronically with CRA-certified software or mailing a paper return. Gather your slips and receipts first and check them against the ones listed in My Account. For the 2025 tax year the filing and payment deadline was 30 April 2026, or 15 June 2026 to file if you or your spouse were self-employed, with payment still due 30 April 2026. CRA online filing for 2025 returns closes 29 January 2027.

A tax deduction is an amount subtracted from your income before tax is worked out, so it reduces the income being taxed rather than the tax bill directly. Its worth depends on your marginal rate: the higher the rate, the more the deduction saves. Common examples are RRSP contributions, child care costs, union dues, moving expenses and business expenses. Credits work the other way, reducing the tax calculated on that income.

Work out the tax you actually owe for the year, then compare it with what has already been paid. Total your income, subtract deductions to reach taxable income, apply the federal and provincial brackets, take off your credits, and set the result against the tax withheld on your T4 and other slips plus any instalments. If more was withheld than you owe, the difference is your refund. Tax software approved for NETFILE runs the same arithmetic once your slips are entered.

Canada taxes income in graduated brackets, so only the income above a threshold is taxed at that bracket's higher rate and moving up a bracket never reprices the income below it. There is one federal set of brackets and a separate set for each province and territory, and the thresholds are indexed to inflation every year. Look up the current figures for your province on the CRA rate tables rather than relying on an older list.

Land transfer tax is a closing cost, paid to the province, and to the city as well in Toronto, when the deed changes hands. It is not deductible against income, even on a rental. Instead it is added to the property's adjusted cost base, which lowers the capital gain when you sell. Keep the statement of adjustments from your lawyer, because that cost base matters years later. First-time buyer rebates reduce the amount you actually pay.

Yes. Either spouse can claim the family's eligible medical expenses for a 12-month period ending in the tax year, and you can divide the total between the two returns, but the same expense cannot be claimed twice. Because only the amount above a threshold tied to net income counts, pooling everything on the lower-income spouse's return usually produces the bigger credit. Run it both ways before you file. The CRA medical expenses page lists what qualifies.

Usually yes. Freight charged as part of selling a taxable good is treated as part of that sale, so the same GST or HST applies to the delivery as to the item. Deliver something zero-rated or exempt, such as basic groceries, and no tax applies to the freight either. A stand-alone delivery service you buy on its own is generally taxable in its own right. Provincial sales tax rules differ, so check your province.

Sign in to CRA My Account and open the tax returns section, where assessed returns and notices of assessment for several past years can be viewed and saved as PDFs. The copy the CRA holds reflects what was actually assessed, including any change the agency made. If you cannot sign in, request copies by phone or by mail, or ask whoever prepared the return for their file copy.

Almost anything you receive for work or from capital: employment wages and taxable benefits, self-employment and gig earnings, tips, rental profit, interest, dividends, the taxable portion of capital gains, pension and RRIF withdrawals, EI and most government payments, and spousal support under a written agreement or court order. Payment in cash or cryptocurrency counts the same as an amount on a slip. Lottery winnings, most gifts and inheritances, and TFSA growth do not count.

No. Gross income is everything you received before any deductions. Net income comes next, after amounts such as RRSP contributions, union dues, child care and employment expenses. Taxable income is the final step, after further deductions like carried-forward losses, and it is the figure the rate brackets are applied to. Credits, including the basic personal amount, then reduce the tax calculated on that figure rather than the income itself.

Cost tracks the entity and the state of the records. A sole proprietor filing a T2125 with a personal return is a smaller job than a corporation needing a T2, financial statements, payroll filings and GST/HST returns. Bookkeeping that has to be rebuilt first is the usual reason a quote rises, so a clean set of books keeps the fee down. Our fees are fixed and agreed before work starts, and you pay after the service.

An excise stamp is the marker the Canada Revenue Agency issues to manufacturers and importers holding an excise licence, showing that federal excise duty has been accounted for on a tobacco, vaping or cannabis product. Stamps carry province-specific colouring and security features so enforcement can tell where the product was destined. Product without one is unstamped tobacco, which may be held only in narrow circumstances set out in the excise rules and otherwise attracts a special duty and penalties.
