CRA Tax-Debt Assistance: Our Analysis

The Voluntary Disclosures Program can waive gross-negligence penalties and part of the interest — but only while the CRA has not yet contacted you. Because the fee is fixed and low-cost, the economics stay predictable whether your file is simple or messy.

CRA Tax-Debt Assistance: Notes From Our Practice

Most write-ups of cra tax-debt assistance describe the form. These notes describe the file — what a tax services provider checks first and why.

One rule does more work than the rest combined, so it goes first. A review is won on documentation created at the time, not explanations offered afterwards. An unsupported claim is simply disallowed, however correct it was.

The second point follows directly from the first. The Voluntary Disclosures Program can waive gross-negligence penalties and part of the interest. That relief is available only while the CRA has not yet contacted the taxpayer about the issue. The documentation side matters just as much. A notice of objection is generally due 90 days from the date of the notice of assessment. Individuals can instead object up to one year after the filing due date if that is later; corporations have only the 90 days. Any taxpayer who misses the deadline can apply for an extension within the following year.

If the rules above feel like they might interact in your situation, that instinct is usually right. Sorting out how is the core of what a tax services provider does on a cra tax-debt assistance engagement. Before the first meeting, it helps to pull together the records that let a tax services provider see your situation whole.

The fee is fixed and agreed before any work starts, you review every figure, and payment happens only after the work is done.

Case Study 1

Audit Defence Closed In 10 Weeks, $29,000 Cleared — Taxpayer Relief Applicant, Brampton

A taxpayer applying for relief from penalties and interest in Brampton, Ontario was under review. The issue was a director liability assessment for a corporation that had already stopped operating. The file closed in 10 weeks with $29,000 of proposed tax cleared.

A taxpayer applying for relief from penalties and interest in Brampton, Ontario was selected for review. A director liability assessment for a corporation that had already stopped operating had shown up in the CRA's automated matching. The proposed adjustment on CRA tax-debt assistance came to $29,000. We filed the disclosure through the Voluntary Disclosures Program before contact, which removed the gross-negligence penalty entirely. Every figure in the response traced to a source record the auditor could verify without asking a second question. The review closed with no change. $29,000 of proposed tax came off the table, and the documentation now in place makes the next review a short one.

Case Study 2

Holding Structure Added, $31,000 Saved Annually — Director Facing Assessment, Hamilton

A business owner with a director liability assessment in Hamilton, Ontario needed a holding structure. It had to deal with a proposal letter with a 30-day response window and no supporting records assembled. The reorganisation was tax-neutral and removed $31,000 of annual exposure.

The structure at a business owner with a director liability assessment in Hamilton, Ontario needed fixing. The file was carrying a proposal letter with a 30-day response window and no supporting records assembled. Every option for fixing it ran through a reorganisation that had to be done without triggering tax. We worked with the client's lawyer. Together, we traced each unexplained deposit to its source — loans, transfers between accounts, an insurance settlement — and reduced the net-worth assessment accordingly. We also prepared the elections, resolutions and valuations the structure needed to stand up. The structure now matches the business. Annual saving of $31,000, and the reorganisation itself was tax-neutral.

Case Study 3

Instalments Rebased, $160,000 Of Cash Returned To The Business — Importer Under Audit, Calgary

An importer under a customs and GST audit in Calgary, Alberta was overpaying instalments. The cause was a waiver signed at the counter that kept an otherwise closed year open with no end date. Rebasing them returned $160,000 to the business.

An importer under a customs and GST audit in Calgary, Alberta was paying instalments calculated on a prior year. That year no longer reflected the business. A waiver signed at the counter that kept an otherwise closed year open with no end date was tying up $160,000 of cash. We rebased the instalments on the current-year estimate rather than the prior-year default. Alongside that, we brought every outstanding return current, then negotiated a payment arrangement that stopped the collections action. $160,000 of cash stayed in the business, the penalty cycle ended, and the instalment position is reviewed each quarter against actual results.

Case Study 4

$132,000 Credit Claim Filed And Accepted Without Adjustment — Restaurant Under Net-Worth Audit, Moncton

A restaurant under a net-worth audit in Moncton, New Brunswick had never tested its work against the eligibility rules. The resulting $132,000 claim was accepted without adjustment.

A restaurant under a net-worth audit in Moncton, New Brunswick assumed the credits did not apply to a business its size. A waiver signed at the counter that kept an otherwise closed year open with no end date meant they had applied all along. We identified the qualifying activity and built the documentation to support it. Then we assembled the contemporaneous records, filed a structured response to each proposed adjustment with the supporting documents indexed, and had the proposal withdrawn. $132,000 recovered. Because the eligibility analysis is on file, the same claim can be repeated each year with a fraction of the effort.

Case Study 5

Desk-Review Assessment Of $53,000 Vacated — Professional Under Lifestyle Audit, Regina

A desk review assessed a professional under a lifestyle audit in Regina, Saskatchewan $53,000. The dispute was over a confirmation letter left in a drawer until the appeal window had closed. Producing the records vacated the assessment.

A professional under a lifestyle audit in Regina, Saskatchewan was carrying $53,000 of penalties and interest. The charges arose from a confirmation letter left in a drawer until the appeal window had closed. Much of that amount accumulated during a period the CRA itself had delayed. We requested the auditor’s working papers and report to see how the assessment had been built before answering any of it. We framed the relief application on the specific grounds the CRA guidelines recognise rather than on general hardship. The assessment was vacated. $53,000 came off the account, and the documentation now on file makes the same position straightforward to defend next time.

Case Study 6

Remuneration Review Saved $58,000 Across Corporate And Personal Returns — Late-Objection Taxpayer, Surrey

A remuneration review at a taxpayer whose objection window has closed in Surrey, British Columbia saved $58,000 across the corporate and personal returns. It found an objection deadline that had passed with no extension applied for.

Nothing was wrong at a taxpayer whose objection window has closed in Surrey, British Columbia. The filings were on time and accurate. What they were not was planned. An objection deadline that had passed with no extension applied for had never been reviewed. We filed the Tax Court appeal inside the window and resolved the remaining adjustments before a hearing date was needed. We ran the numbers across both the corporate and personal returns, so the saving was real rather than deferred into someone else's hands. $58,000 came off the combined corporate and personal tax bill, and the structure holds for future years without further work.

Before You Call: CRA Tax-Debt Assistance FAQs

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does CRA Tax-Debt Assistance cost in Canada?

CRA Tax-Debt Assistance starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for CRA Tax-Debt Assistance?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does CRA Tax-Debt Assistance take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We serve clients in every province and territory at the same fixed fees, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for CRA Tax-Debt Assistance?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes CRA Tax-Debt Assistance different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in CRA Tax-Debt Assistance services?

Our cra tax-debt assistance services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with CRA Tax-Debt Assistance services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

What records do I need before starting cra tax-debt assistance?

Once the CRA confirms an assessment or reassesses following an objection, the next step is an appeal to the Tax Court of Canada within 90 days. An extension has to be applied for rather than assumed, and the merits of the position do not extend the deadline. We flag this early with every client it touches, because finding it out at filing time leaves you far fewer options than finding it out now.

How long does cra tax-debt assistance usually take from start to finish?

The honest starting point is this: A review is won on documentation created at the time, not on explanations offered afterwards. The CRA asks for the source records behind a figure, and an unsupported claim is simply disallowed. Most reassessments we reverse are not the result of a wrong position — they are the result of a correct position with no contemporaneous paper trail behind it. Everything else we would tell you is tailoring, and tailoring requires seeing your file.

People Also Ask About CRA Tax-Debt Assistance

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

There is no single percentage. Your employer applies the federal withholding table plus the table for your province or territory, using pay frequency, your annual rate of pay and the amounts claimed on your federal and provincial TD1 forms, then adds CPP contributions and EI premiums until the annual maximums are met. Pension contributions, union dues and benefit premiums come off separately. The CRA's Payroll Deductions Online Calculator reproduces the exact figures shown on your stub.

Pay through your bank's online banking by adding the CRA as a payee and choosing the right account and year, through My Payment with a debit card, by pre-authorised debit scheduled in My Account, by credit card through a third-party provider that charges its own fee, or at a bank counter with a remittance voucher. For 2025 personal returns the payment deadline was 30 April 2026, including for the self-employed, and interest runs daily on anything unpaid after that.

With direct deposit registered the refund is paid straight to the bank account on file, and about two weeks is the usual CRA standard for a 2025 return filed online. An out-of-date account is a common cause of delay, so update it in My Account before you file. A paper return runs on a considerably longer standard before any payment is issued at all.

There are three routes: file online yourself through NETFILE certified software, have a preparer transmit it by EFILE, or mail a paper return to your CRA tax centre. Online filing returns a confirmation number straight away, and that number is your proof of filing. For 2025 returns the CRA opened online filing on 23 February 2026 and closes it on 29 January 2027 for its annual changeover; when the system reopens in February 2027 a 2025 return can still be transmitted electronically, because NETFILE and EFILE accept the current tax year plus the three preceding years.

The CRA charges compound daily interest on an unpaid balance from the day after the payment deadline until the balance is cleared. The charge uses the prescribed rate, which the CRA resets every calendar quarter, so it moves with market rates rather than staying fixed. Arrears interest is not deductible. Look up the current quarter on the CRA's prescribed interest rates page, and pay something against the balance to slow the daily charge.

The CRA does not usually move a due date, but you can ask for a payment arrangement that spreads the balance over time. Interest keeps running while you pay. Apply through My Account, My Business Account, or the CRA's debt management call centre. Where interest or penalties arose from circumstances beyond your control, ask for relief using form RC4288. British Columbia's property tax deferment program is a separate provincial scheme with its own application.

Call the CRA's individual or business enquiries line, both listed on the Contact the CRA page at canada.ca. Have your social insurance number or business number, your date of birth, and a line amount from a recent return ready, because the agent verifies you before discussing anything. Lines are quietest early in the morning and outside filing season. You can also authorise someone to call on your behalf using form AUT-01.

Register in Represent a Client from the CRA sign-in page; the RepID is issued straight away once your identity is confirmed. A RepID identifies you personally, a group identifier covers a team, and a business number is used where a firm acts. The identifier alone opens nothing: each client must then authorise you online from their own CRA account, or sign an AUT-01 for the CRA to process, before you can see their information.

Yes. GST/HST you charge customers is collected on the government's behalf, so it sits as a liability until you remit it. Input tax credits on your purchases reduce that balance, and the net amount is what the GST/HST return reports. Record the tax in its own account at the point of sale; treating collected tax as revenue overstates sales and hides what you owe. Reconcile the account every filing period against the return.

Yes. Cash tips are taxable income even when no employer records them and no slip is issued, and they are reported as other employment income on your T1 for the year received. Keep a simple daily log, because the CRA can estimate tips from sales, hours and industry patterns if it reviews your return. Reporting tips also builds CPP contributions, which raises the pension you eventually collect.

Residents are taxed on worldwide income, self-assessed on a return you file yourself. Add up income, subtract deductions to reach taxable income, apply the federal and provincial brackets in steps, then reduce the result by non-refundable credits and by tax already withheld or paid by instalment. The difference is your refund or balance owing, which the CRA confirms on a notice of assessment and can later review or reassess.

Yes, in part. The rate applied to the lowest federal bracket was cut part-way through 2025, so the 2025 return uses a blended rate for that bracket and the full reduction applies from 2026 onward. Bracket thresholds and most credit amounts were also indexed. Separately, the proposed increase to the capital gains inclusion rate was never enacted, so one-half remains the inclusion rate for the 2025 and 2026 tax years. CRA's federal tax rates page gives the exact percentages per year.
