Post-Assessment Review Assistance: Our Analysis

CRA reviews are won on documentation: every figure filed should trace to a source document, and deadlines — 90 days for an objection — are unforgiving. The Voluntary Disclosures Program can waive gross-negligence penalties and part of the interest — but only while the CRA has not yet contacted you. We quote post-assessment review assistance as one low-cost fixed price — the budget-friendly alternative to hourly billing.

Observations From Our Post-Assessment Review Assistance Files

The pattern in post-assessment review assistance files repeats often enough that a tax preparation specialist can usually tell early on where a file will need work. What follows is that read, written down for Post-Assessment Review Assistance.

One rule does more work than the rest combined, so it goes first. Taxpayer relief applications can cancel penalties and interest arising from CRA delay, serious illness or a natural disaster. The CRA is limited to the ten prior calendar years.

A related rule tends to get overlooked precisely because the first one draws all the attention: Collections action can proceed while an objection is outstanding for GST/HST and payroll amounts. That is why a filed objection is not by itself protection against a bank freeze. And on timing: A review is won on documentation created at the time, not explanations offered afterwards. An unsupported claim is simply disallowed, however correct it was.

If the rules above feel like they might interact in your situation, that instinct is usually right. Sorting out how is the core of what a tax preparation specialist does on a post-assessment review assistance engagement. Gather whatever records touch the numbers — statements, ledgers, prior-year filings — and we take it from there.

Start whenever suits you; the structure is already set. You will know the fixed fee before work begins, approve the file before it is filed, and pay only once the service is delivered.

Post-Assessment Review Assistance Tax & Accounting Case Studies

Case Study 1

Desk-Review Assessment Of $53,000 Vacated — Voluntary Disclosure Applicant, Kitchener

A desk review assessed a business owner considering a voluntary disclosure in Kitchener, Ontario $53,000. The dispute was over a waiver signed at the counter that kept an otherwise closed year open with no end date. Producing the records vacated the assessment.

A business owner considering a voluntary disclosure in Kitchener, Ontario was carrying $53,000 of penalties and interest. The charges arose from a waiver signed at the counter that kept an otherwise closed year open with no end date. Much of that amount accumulated during a period the CRA itself had delayed. We kept the waiver narrowed to the issue actually under review and let the remaining years close on the normal reassessment period. We framed the relief application on the specific grounds the CRA guidelines recognise rather than on general hardship. The assessment was vacated. $53,000 came off the account, and the documentation now on file makes the same position straightforward to defend next time.

Case Study 2

$63,000 Of Working Capital Freed From The Tax Cycle — Director Facing Assessment, Kelowna

A business owner with a director liability assessment in Kelowna, British Columbia was profitable and permanently short of cash. Behind the gap sat a proposal letter with a 30-day response window and no supporting records assembled. Restructuring the tax cycle freed $63,000.

A business owner with a director liability assessment in Kelowna, British Columbia was profitable on paper and short of cash every month. A proposal letter with a 30-day response window and no supporting records assembled explained most of the gap. We traced each unexplained deposit to its source — loans, transfers between accounts, an insurance settlement — and reduced the net-worth assessment accordingly. We also built a thirteen-week cash view so tax payments stopped competing with payroll for the same dollars. $63,000 was released back into working capital. Remittances have been on time every period since, and the forecast shows the tax outflow before it lands.

Case Study 3

Audit Defence Closed In 7 Weeks, $19,000 Cleared — Assessed Shareholder, Mississauga

A shareholder assessed on a taxable benefit in Mississauga, Ontario was under review. The issue was a director liability assessment for a corporation that had already stopped operating. The file closed in 7 weeks with $19,000 of proposed tax cleared.

A shareholder assessed on a taxable benefit in Mississauga, Ontario was selected for review. A director liability assessment for a corporation that had already stopped operating had shown up in the CRA's automated matching. The proposed adjustment on post-assessment review assistance came to $19,000. We requested the auditor’s working papers and report to see how the assessment had been built before answering any of it. Every figure in the response traced to a source record the auditor could verify without asking a second question. The review closed with no change. $19,000 of proposed tax came off the table, and the documentation now in place makes the next review a short one.

Case Study 4

7 Years Filed, $34,500 Removed From The Assessed Balance — Professional Under Lifestyle Audit, Halifax

7 years of returns were outstanding at a professional under a lifestyle audit in Halifax, Nova Scotia. That came on top of an audit conducted over the phone, with nothing on file showing what had been provided or when. Filing on real numbers removed $34,500 of assessed tax.

A professional under a lifestyle audit in Halifax, Nova Scotia had not filed for 7 years. The CRA had issued arbitrary assessments. The business was carrying an audit conducted over the phone, with nothing on file showing what had been provided or when. That came on top of a growing interest balance. We started with the oldest year and worked forward so each year's closing balances fed the next. We answered each query in writing with an indexed document package, so the file showed exactly what the auditor had received and on what date. We filed the years in sequence rather than all at once. Every year is now filed and assessed on actual figures. The notional assessments were vacated and $34,500 of the estimated balance came off, with a payment arrangement covering the rest.

Case Study 5

Filed On Time From A Standing Start, $86,000 Penalty Avoided — Taxpayer Relief Applicant, Red Deer

A taxpayer applying for relief from penalties and interest in Red Deer, Alberta was 7 weeks from a deadline. The file also carried six years of unfiled corporate and personal returns and an active collections file. Filing complete and on time avoided roughly $86,000 in penalties.

A taxpayer applying for relief from penalties and interest in Red Deer, Alberta came to us 7 weeks before its filing deadline. The file came with six years of unfiled corporate and personal returns and an active collections file. A late filing would have triggered a penalty of roughly $86,000 before interest. We worked backwards from the deadline. We brought every outstanding return current, then negotiated a payment arrangement that stopped the collections action. We prioritised the items that actually gated the filing and deferred everything that did not. The return was filed on time and complete. The $86,000 penalty never arose, and the compliance calendar we set means the next deadline is scheduled rather than discovered.

Case Study 6

$66,000 Cut From The Annual Tax Bill — Employer Under Payroll Review, Guelph

A company facing a payroll trust examination in Guelph, Ontario was filing correctly and still overpaying. The reason was an objection deadline that had passed with no extension applied for. Restructuring the position cut $66,000 from the annual bill.

A company facing a payroll trust examination in Guelph, Ontario was compliant but paying more than it needed to. The prior year had been filed correctly. It still left an objection deadline that had passed with no extension applied for on the table. We modelled the current position against the alternatives before changing anything. Then we filed the Tax Court appeal inside the window and resolved the remaining adjustments before a hearing date was needed. The change saved $66,000 in the first year and repeats annually. Nothing about the filings became more aggressive. The position is simply the one the rules already allowed.

What Clients Ask Us About Post-Assessment Review Assistance

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does Post-Assessment Review Assistance cost in Canada?

Post-Assessment Review Assistance starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for Post-Assessment Review Assistance?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does Post-Assessment Review Assistance take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We serve clients in every province and territory at the same fixed fees, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for Post-Assessment Review Assistance?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes Post-Assessment Review Assistance different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in Post-Assessment Review Assistance services?

Our post-assessment review assistance services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with Post-Assessment Review Assistance services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

What records do I need before starting post-assessment review assistance?

It depends less on opinion than owners assume. Once the CRA confirms an assessment or reassesses following an objection, the next step is an appeal to the Tax Court of Canada within 90 days. An extension has to be applied for rather than assumed, and the merits of the position do not extend the deadline. Once you know that, the practical question becomes timing and documentation — both of which we handle inside the engagement.

How long does post-assessment review assistance usually take from start to finish?

Here is what the rules actually say, stripped of the folklore: A review is won on documentation created at the time, not on explanations offered afterwards. The CRA asks for the source records behind a figure, and an unsupported claim is simply disallowed. Most reassessments we reverse are not the result of a wrong position — they are the result of a correct position with no contemporaneous paper trail behind it. Our role as your accountant is to apply that cleanly to your situation rather than to a hypothetical one.

More Post-Assessment Review Assistance Questions Canadians Ask

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

As the rules stand for the 2025 tax year filed in 2026, the late-filing penalty is 5% of the balance owing plus 1% of that balance for each full month the return is late, to a maximum of 12 months, so 17% at worst. It rises to 10% plus 2% per month for up to 20 months, a 50% maximum, but only where the CRA formally demanded the return and had already charged a late-filing penalty for any of the three preceding tax years. Interest compounds daily.

Several NETFILE certified programs are free to use for straightforward returns, and the CRA publishes the certified list each filing season. If your income is modest and your return is simple, a free volunteer tax clinic can prepare and file it for you. Some people also receive a CRA invitation to file through a simplified phone or digital service. Free tools cover most employment and pension returns; self-employment, rental or foreign income usually needs more.

Check My Account, which shows your current balance, any instalment requirement and the assessment for every year. The notice of assessment for your last filed return also states the balance, and the CRA's individual enquiries line can confirm it once you verify your identity. If returns are missing, the balance is not final until those years are filed. A representative can review it for you once authorised through Represent a Client or form AUT-01.

A tax specialist prepares and files returns, works out how the rules apply to your particular facts, and deals with the CRA on reviews, audits and objections. On the planning side that covers timing income, choosing between salary and dividends, structuring a sale of a business, or correcting a filed year through an adjustment request. Fees vary with complexity, so get the price in writing before work starts and confirm whether CRA follow-up is included.

Revenue Canada is the former name of the Canada Revenue Agency. The CRA is the federal body that administers income tax, GST/HST, payroll deductions and benefit payments such as the Canada child benefit, and it collects provincial income tax for every province except Quebec, which runs its own personal system through Revenu Québec. The old name is still in everyday use, so paying Revenue Canada means paying the CRA, and a letter from either is the same agency.

A laptop is fully taxable at the sales tax rate for the place it is delivered. That means 5% GST in Alberta and the territories, 13% HST in Ontario, 14% in Nova Scotia from 1 April 2025, and 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island. On top of GST, British Columbia adds 7% PST, Saskatchewan 6%, Manitoba 7% RST and Quebec 9.975% QST. Registered businesses can generally recover the GST or HST paid.

Six broad families. Income tax on individuals and corporations. Payroll contributions, meaning CPP and EI. Consumption taxes, meaning GST, HST and provincial sales taxes. Excise duties on fuel, alcohol, tobacco and vaping products. Property and land transfer taxes charged by municipalities and provinces. And tax on gains, including the gains treated as realised on death. Customs duties on imports sit alongside them. Most households only ever deal with the first three.

Almost always, yes. A lump sum from a registered pension, a commuted value, a deferred profit sharing plan or an unlocked locked-in account is income in the year you receive it, and tax is withheld before you get the money. A direct transfer of an eligible amount into an RRSP or RRIF can defer the tax, but it must move plan to plan rather than through your bank account. Ask for the transfer paperwork before the payout is processed.

Each province sets its own top bracket, which sits on top of the federal top bracket, so the highest combined marginal rate depends on where you live, and both rates and thresholds are adjusted each year. Look up the current combined table for your province rather than relying on a single national figure. It is a marginal rate: only the income above the threshold is taxed at it, never your whole income.

A genuine CRA call can show as blocked, private or an unfamiliar number, so the display proves nothing either way. Judge the call by its content. The CRA will not demand payment by gift card, cryptocurrency or e-transfer, will not threaten immediate arrest or deportation, and will not ask for a passport or banking password. Hang up, then call an enquiry line published on canada.ca or check My Account for a real balance.

Canada has no personal exemption in the American sense. The equivalent is the basic personal amount, a non-refundable credit every resident can claim, which cancels federal tax on a first slice of income, and each province has its own version at a different level. The federal amount is indexed annually and is reduced for taxpayers in the top bracket. It is applied automatically when you file, so there is nothing to elect or apply for.
