Frozen Bank Account Tax Support: Our Analysis

The Voluntary Disclosures Program can waive gross-negligence penalties and part of the interest — but only while the CRA has not yet contacted you. Because the fee is fixed and low-cost, the economics stay predictable whether your file is simple or messy.

From the Desk of Your Tax Specialist

These notes are written the way a tax specialist would explain Frozen Bank Account Tax Support across a desk: no theory, just the points that decide real files.

One rule does most of the work here. A notice of objection is generally due 90 days from the date of the notice of assessment. Individuals have a further year to apply for an extension; corporations do not get the same latitude.

The second point is quieter but costs more when missed. The late-filing penalty is 5% of the balance owing plus 1% for each full month late, to a maximum of twelve months. A second late filing within three years doubles both figures. The penalty is calculated on the balance owing, so a late return with nothing owing costs nothing — which is why filing on time matters even when you cannot pay. One more rule deserves attention, mostly because ignoring it is expensive in ways that only show up later. The VDP can waive gross-negligence penalties and part of the interest on unreported income or unfiled returns — but only while the disclosure is genuinely voluntary. The window closes the moment the CRA makes contact about the issue. Acting before that letter arrives is worth real money.

What this means in practice: the rules themselves are public, but applying them to your situation is where a tax specialist earns the fee. Two files can read the same rules and land in very different places. Think of this list as the raw material a tax specialist works from on frozen bank account tax support.

Every frozen bank account tax support engagement carries the same commitments: a fixed fee settled before we begin, your sign-off before anything is filed, and payment only after the service is complete.

Frozen Bank Account Tax Support: Straight Answers to Common Questions

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does Frozen Bank Account Tax Support cost in Canada?

Frozen Bank Account Tax Support starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for Frozen Bank Account Tax Support?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does Frozen Bank Account Tax Support take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We are a cloud-based practice serving every province and territory, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for Frozen Bank Account Tax Support?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes Frozen Bank Account Tax Support different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in Frozen Bank Account Tax Support services?

Our frozen bank account tax support services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with Frozen Bank Account Tax Support services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

How do I know if my business actually needs frozen bank account tax support?

A tax professional answers this differently than a search engine, because the rule has edges. A review is won on documentation created at the time, not explanations offered afterwards. An unsupported claim is simply disallowed, however correct it was. Where your business sits relative to those edges is what we establish in the first meeting.

What will you need from me to get frozen bank account tax support started?

Let us give you the substance first and the caveats second. The Voluntary Disclosures Program can waive gross-negligence penalties and part of the interest, but only while the CRA has not yet contacted the taxpayer about the issue. The caveat is simply that facts on your file can shift the outcome, so treat this as the baseline rather than the final word.

Searched Questions About Frozen Bank Account Tax Support

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

As the rules stand for the 2025 tax year filed in 2026, the late-filing penalty is 5% of the balance owing plus 1% of that balance for each full month the return is late, to a maximum of 12 months, so 17% at worst. It rises to 10% plus 2% per month for up to 20 months, a 50% maximum, but only where the CRA formally demanded the return and had already charged a late-filing penalty for any of the three preceding tax years. Interest compounds daily.

Yes. A prior-year return can be filed at any time, and electronic filing stays open for several past years, so a 2024 return usually still goes through software rather than on paper. If a balance is owing, the late-filing penalty has already run to its twelve-month maximum and interest is still accumulating daily, so there is nothing to gain from waiting. If you cannot pay in full, file anyway and then arrange payment, because the penalty is tied to filing rather than paying.

Yes, and usually you should. A return with no income is how the CRA works out the GST/HST credit, the Canada child benefit and provincial credits, all of which depend on a filed return. It also keeps carryforward amounts such as unused tuition on record and gets back any tax withheld. Skipping a year can pause benefit payments until you file, and there is no penalty for filing a nil return.

Taxpayer information is anything the CRA holds that came from or was prepared about your tax affairs: returns, slips, assessments, balances and correspondence. The Income Tax Act binds the CRA to keep it confidential, so it cannot be released to a spouse, an accountant or a lender without your authorisation. You give that authorisation through My Account or a signed AUT-01. Sharing between the CRA and other government programs happens only where the law allows it.

A review is not an audit. The CRA asks for receipts or documents supporting a claim, gives a date to respond, then either accepts the return as filed or issues a reassessment. Timing depends on the type of review and how fast complete documents arrive; sending everything requested in one package is the fastest route. Track progress in CRA My Account, where the letter and the outcome both appear.

The CRA does not usually move a due date, but you can ask for a payment arrangement that spreads the balance over time. Interest keeps running while you pay. Apply through My Account, My Business Account, or the CRA's debt management call centre. Where interest or penalties arose from circumstances beyond your control, ask for relief using form RC4288. British Columbia's property tax deferment program is a separate provincial scheme with its own application.

It is the mailing address the CRA holds for you, the one shown on your return and used for notices of assessment, benefit letters and cheques. Keep it current: mail sent to an old address still counts as delivered, and benefit payments can be held up when the CRA cannot reach you. Update it in My Account, by phone, or on your next return. A business address is tracked separately from a personal one.

Severance normally arrives on a T4 from your former employer: the taxable portion in employment income, and any retiring allowance shown in its own boxes. Enter the slip amounts on your T1 exactly as issued, including the tax already withheld. An amount transferred directly to an RRSP is reported but offset by the deduction, so it is not taxed this year. Legal fees paid to collect severance may be deductible. Keep the settlement letter with your records.

A tax debt is not reported to the credit bureaus, so owing the CRA does not by itself move your score. It can still reach your credit indirectly. The CRA may register the debt with the court and secure it against property, and that registration is public, so a lender doing a search can find it. Interest compounds daily in the meantime. If you cannot pay in full, ask about a payment arrangement before collection begins.

Employers must issue T4 slips for the previous calendar year by the CRA slip filing deadline in the first months of the following year; canada.ca gives the exact date. Many post them to a payroll portal earlier, and copies appear in CRA My Account once the employer filing is processed, which is what feeds Auto-fill my return. If no slip arrives, ask the employer, then report the income from your pay stubs, since the filing deadline of 30 April 2026 for 2025 returns still stands.

The address depends on where you live and on what you are sending, because the CRA splits the work across several tax centres. The current one is printed in the paper return package and listed on canada.ca under where to mail your return, and any letter from the CRA shows the centre holding your file. Reply to the address on that letter. Filing online removes the question and shortens the assessment time.

Spousal support is normally taxable to the recipient and deductible to the payer, provided the payments are periodic and required by a court order or written agreement. Child support under most current orders is neither taxable nor deductible. Lump-sum settlements, and payments made before any order or agreement exists, usually fail the test. Register the order or agreement with the CRA and keep it available, because support claims are frequently reviewed before a refund is released.
