CRA Garnishment Assistance: Our Analysis

A notice of objection is generally due 90 days from the notice of assessment, and individuals have a further year to apply for an extension. Our cra garnishment assistance engagement is priced as a affordable flat fee, so the cost is known before the work starts.

Practitioner Notes on CRA Garnishment Assistance

After years of preparing cra garnishment assistance files week in and week out, a tax expert starts to see the same handful of decisions shape almost every outcome. These notes cover the ones that matter for CRA Garnishment Assistance.

Ask any tax expert where cra garnishment assistance files go sideways, and the answer usually traces back to this: Collections action can proceed while an objection is outstanding for GST/HST and payroll amounts. That is why a filed objection is not by itself protection against a bank freeze.

That rule rarely travels alone; alongside it sits another: Taxpayer relief applications can cancel penalties and interest arising from CRA delay, serious illness or a natural disaster. The CRA is limited to the ten prior calendar years. Ask what a reviewer will want to see, and the answer sits in this rule: The normal reassessment period runs three years from the original notice of assessment for an individual or a CCPC and four years for other corporations. A waiver signed at an auditor’s request removes that limit for the issue it describes. It stays open until it is revoked.

Think of these rules as the fixed terrain; your circumstances decide the route through it. Mapping that route is the work a tax expert takes off your plate for cra garnishment assistance. Gathering the following ahead of time turns the first cra garnishment assistance conversation from fact-finding into decision-making.

The last note is about how we work rather than the rules: every engagement comes with a fixed fee agreed up front, a review with you before filing, and payment after — not before — the service.

Case Study 1

Desk-Review Assessment Of $80,000 Vacated — Employer Under Payroll Review, Regina

A desk review assessed a company facing a payroll trust examination in Regina, Saskatchewan $80,000. The dispute was over an objection deadline that had passed with no extension applied for. Producing the records vacated the assessment.

A company facing a payroll trust examination in Regina, Saskatchewan was carrying $80,000 of penalties and interest. The charges arose from an objection deadline that had passed with no extension applied for. Much of that amount accumulated during a period the CRA itself had delayed. We answered each query in writing with an indexed document package, so the file showed exactly what the auditor had received and on what date. We framed the relief application on the specific grounds the CRA guidelines recognise rather than on general hardship. The assessment was vacated. $80,000 came off the account, and the documentation now on file makes the same position straightforward to defend next time.

Case Study 2

$87,000 Proposed Adjustment Withdrawn In Full — Late-Objection Taxpayer, Guelph

A taxpayer whose objection window has closed in Guelph, Ontario faced an $87,000 proposed reassessment. It came after six years of unfiled corporate and personal returns and an active collections file. We rebuilt the documentation and the adjustment was withdrawn in full.

A taxpayer whose objection window has closed in Guelph, Ontario received a proposal letter opening a review of CRA garnishment assistance. The CRA had identified six years of unfiled corporate and personal returns and an active collections file. It proposed an adjustment of $87,000, with 30 days to respond. We treated the response as an evidence exercise rather than an argument. We filed the disclosure through the Voluntary Disclosures Program before contact, which removed the gross-negligence penalty entirely. We then indexed every supporting document against the specific line the auditor had questioned. The proposed adjustment was withdrawn in full — all $87,000 of it. The file closed in 11 weeks with no change to the assessed amounts and no penalty.

Case Study 3

Filed On Time From A Standing Start, $48,000 Penalty Avoided — Restaurant Under Net-Worth Audit, Winnipeg

A restaurant under a net-worth audit in Winnipeg, Manitoba was 5 weeks from a deadline. The file also carried an audit conducted over the phone, with nothing on file showing what had been provided or when. Filing complete and on time avoided roughly $48,000 in penalties.

A restaurant under a net-worth audit in Winnipeg, Manitoba came to us 5 weeks before its filing deadline. The file came with an audit conducted over the phone, with nothing on file showing what had been provided or when. A late filing would have triggered a penalty of roughly $48,000 before interest. We worked backwards from the deadline. We traced each unexplained deposit to its source — loans, transfers between accounts, an insurance settlement — and reduced the net-worth assessment accordingly. We prioritised the items that actually gated the filing and deferred everything that did not. The return was filed on time and complete. The $48,000 penalty never arose, and the compliance calendar we set means the next deadline is scheduled rather than discovered.

Case Study 4

Incentive Review Recovered $46,000 Across 5 Open Years — Director Facing Assessment, Kitchener

An incentive review at a business owner with a director liability assessment in Kitchener, Ontario recovered $46,000 across 5 open years. It found an audit conducted over the phone, with nothing on file showing what had been provided or when.

An incentive review at a business owner with a director liability assessment in Kitchener, Ontario started from a simple question: what has never been claimed? The answer ran to 5 years. It was driven by an audit conducted over the phone, with nothing on file showing what had been provided or when. We brought every outstanding return current, then negotiated a payment arrangement that stopped the collections action. We documented eligibility to the standard a reviewer would apply rather than the standard a claim form requires. The credits produced $46,000 across the open years. The tracking now in place means the following year's claim is documented as the work happens rather than reconstructed afterwards.

Case Study 5

Month-End Close Cut From 11 Weeks To 9 Days — Family Business Under Review, Lethbridge

Closing the books at a family business under a related-party review in Lethbridge, Alberta took 11 weeks. The cause was a proposal letter with a 30-day response window and no supporting records assembled. It now takes 9 days.

The accounting file at a family business under a related-party review in Lethbridge, Alberta had a weak foundation. It was built on a proposal letter with a 30-day response window and no supporting records assembled. The year-end had taken 11 weeks each of the last three years. We assembled the contemporaneous records, filed a structured response to each proposed adjustment with the supporting documents indexed, and had the proposal withdrawn. We also moved the reconciliations into the monthly cycle, so the year-end stopped being a rebuild. The file reconciles. Month-end closes in 9 days instead of 11 weeks, and the year-end is a review rather than a reconstruction.

Case Study 6

Share Sale Restructured, $865,000 Less Tax On Closing — Assessed Shareholder, Hamilton

Due diligence at a shareholder assessed on a taxable benefit in Hamilton, Ontario surfaced a minute book with no resolutions behind a decade of dividends. Restructuring the sale saved $865,000 against the original terms.

A shareholder assessed on a taxable benefit in Hamilton, Ontario was preparing to sell. Due diligence surfaced a minute book with no resolutions behind a decade of dividends. That would have reduced the price or killed the deal outright. We cleaned up the historical file. We requested the auditor’s working papers and report to see how the assessment had been built before answering any of it. Then we prepared the due-diligence package the buyer's advisers actually asked for. The deal closed at the agreed price. $865,000 of tax was saved against the structure originally proposed, with no post-closing adjustment.

What Clients Ask Us About CRA Garnishment Assistance

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does CRA Garnishment Assistance cost in Canada?

CRA Garnishment Assistance starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for CRA Garnishment Assistance?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does CRA Garnishment Assistance take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We serve clients in every province and territory at the same fixed fees, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for CRA Garnishment Assistance?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes CRA Garnishment Assistance different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in CRA Garnishment Assistance services?

Our cra garnishment assistance services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with CRA Garnishment Assistance services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

What goes wrong most often with cra garnishment assistance?

The normal reassessment period runs three years from the original notice of assessment for an individual or a CCPC and four years for other corporations. A waiver signed at an auditor’s request removes that limit for the issue it describes. It stays open until it is revoked. That is the part most owners have not heard before they sit down with us, and it usually changes what they do next.

What records do I need before starting cra garnishment assistance?

The short answer comes straight from our working notes: Once the CRA confirms an assessment or reassesses following an objection, the next step is an appeal to the Tax Court of Canada within 90 days. An extension has to be applied for rather than assumed, and the merits of the position do not extend the deadline. How that plays out on your file depends on the specifics, which is exactly what the engagement is for.

Commonly Searched CRA Garnishment Assistance Questions

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

Canada runs three systems. The federal GST is 5% for 2026 and applies nationally. Five participating provinces fold a provincial share into one harmonised rate: 13% in Ontario, 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island, and 14% in Nova Scotia since 1 April 2025. Others add their own tax to the 5% GST, giving 12% in British Columbia and Manitoba, 11% in Saskatchewan and 14.975% in Quebec. Alberta and the territories charge 5% only.

Most enquiries are settled without a phone call in My Account, My Business Account or Represent a Client, where assessments, balances, slips and CRA mail all sit. When you need a person, use the enquiries line for your programme from the contact page on canada.ca, and have your social insurance or business number plus a figure from a recent return ready for identity checks. Written enquiries go to the tax centre named on your notice of assessment.

A return filed online is usually assessed and refunded in about two weeks, as long as your direct deposit details and address are current in CRA My Account and the return is not selected for review. A non-resident return can take up to sixteen weeks. Amounts you owe the CRA or another government program are applied against the refund first. My Account shows the assessment and the refund once issued, which is the quickest way to check.

The CRA charges compound daily interest on an unpaid balance from the day after the payment deadline until the balance is cleared. The charge uses the prescribed rate, which the CRA resets every calendar quarter, so it moves with market rates rather than staying fixed. Arrears interest is not deductible. Look up the current quarter on the CRA's prescribed interest rates page, and pay something against the balance to slow the daily charge.

Yes, tax is withheld from Employment Insurance benefits before the money reaches you, but the amount held back is often less than you end up owing. It is worked out on the benefit alone and ignores the employment or self-employment income you earned in the rest of the year, so a balance is common at filing. You can ask Service Canada to withhold more. Report the full benefit on your T1.

The CRA does not usually move a due date, but you can ask for a payment arrangement that spreads the balance over time. Interest keeps running while you pay. Apply through My Account, My Business Account, or the CRA's debt management call centre. Where interest or penalties arose from circumstances beyond your control, ask for relief using form RC4288. British Columbia's property tax deferment program is a separate provincial scheme with its own application.

The individual and business enquiry numbers, along with their hours, are listed on the CRA contact page. Have your social insurance number or business number and a figure from a recent return ready, because the agent must verify you before discussing anything. Many tasks never need a call: CRA My Account and My Business Account show balances, assessments, slips and instalments, and let you file a dispute, change a return or set up a payment arrangement.

During busy periods the CRA's automated phone system may offer a callback instead of holding. Accept it, then keep the line free and answer when the return call comes. The offer appears only when wait times are long, so you cannot request one on demand. If no callback is offered, try calling early in the week, or use My Account and the online enquiry service, which do not involve a queue at all.

Canadian-source income is income whose origin is in Canada: employment carried out here, a business carried on here, rent from Canadian real property, gains on taxable Canadian property, and Canadian pension, dividend and interest payments. It matters most for non-residents, who are taxed only on Canadian-source amounts, often by withholding at the payer rather than by filing. Residents are taxed on worldwide income instead. A tax treaty can reduce the withholding rate for your country.

Canada does not use tax classes or tax codes the way some other countries do. Your income tax comes from graduated brackets, with federal rates for 2026 running from 14% up to 33% and separate provincial brackets on top, and from the credits you claim on the personal tax credits return you give your employer. In a business setting, tax class usually means a capital cost allowance class, which sets the rate at which you depreciate an asset.

The balance begins accruing compound daily interest from the payment due date, and filing late adds a separate late-filing penalty on top of it. If nothing is paid the file moves to collections, where the CRA can keep refunds and benefit payments, garnish wages or a bank account, and register a lien against property. Filing on time and agreeing a payment arrangement, even a partial one, prevents most of that. Interest runs until the balance reaches zero.

Canada applies graduated federal and provincial rates, and payroll withholds both on top of CPP and EI, so the total deduction looks large before any credits are settled. Payroll also annualises each payment, so a large or irregular cheque is taxed as though every period looked the same. Working two jobs distorts it further, because each payroll applies its own credits. Filing your return reconciles the real amount and refunds anything over-withheld.
