The sales-tax return businesses file to remit GST/HST collected, net of input tax credits.
SR&ED Audit Support: Our Analysis

CRA reviews are won on documentation: every figure filed should trace to a source document, and deadlines — 90 days for an objection — are unforgiving. The Voluntary Disclosures Program can waive gross-negligence penalties and part of the interest — but only while the CRA has not yet contacted you. Our sr&ed audit support engagement is priced as a pocket-friendly flat fee, so the cost is known before the work starts.

Practitioner’s Notes on SR&ED Audit Support

No two sr&ed audit support files are identical, but the rules that govern them are stable. A tax services provider who works with SR&ED Audit Support weekly keeps returning to the same anchors, and they are set out below.

There is no way around the opening fact, so it may as well come first. Once the CRA confirms an assessment or reassesses following an objection, the next step is an appeal to the Tax Court of Canada within 90 days. An extension has to be applied for rather than assumed, and the merits of the position do not extend the deadline.

A related rule tends to get overlooked precisely because the first one draws all the attention: The normal reassessment period runs three years from the original notice of assessment for an individual or a CCPC and four years for other corporations. A waiver signed at an auditor’s request removes that limit for the issue it describes. It stays open until it is revoked. Calendars matter more than most people expect in sr&ed audit support, and this is the rule that proves it: Taxpayer relief applications can cancel penalties and interest arising from CRA delay, serious illness or a natural disaster. The CRA is limited to the ten prior calendar years.

You do not need to hold all of this in your head. You need someone who does — and a tax filing specialist handling sr&ed audit support week after week keeps these rules current so you do not have to. Nothing slows a file like missing records, so for sr&ed audit support begin with.

The last note is about how we work rather than the rules: every engagement comes with a fixed fee agreed up front, a review with you before filing, and payment after — not before — the service.

SR&ED Audit Support Tax & Accounting Case Studies

See how our expert SR&ED Audit Support tax and accounting services have helped Canadian businesses save money and stay compliant.

Case Study 1

Holding Structure Added, $18,500 Saved Annually — Professional Under Lifestyle Audit, Mississauga

A professional under a lifestyle audit in Mississauga, Ontario needed a holding structure. It had to deal with six years of unfiled corporate and personal returns and an active collections file. The reorganisation was tax-neutral and removed $18,500 of annual exposure.

The structure at a professional under a lifestyle audit in Mississauga, Ontario needed fixing. The file was carrying six years of unfiled corporate and personal returns and an active collections file. Every option for fixing it ran through a reorganisation that had to be done without triggering tax. We worked with the client's lawyer. Together, we brought every outstanding return current, then negotiated a payment arrangement that stopped the collections action. We also prepared the elections, resolutions and valuations the structure needed to stand up. The structure now matches the business. Annual saving of $18,500, and the reorganisation itself was tax-neutral.

Case Study 2

$775,000 Sheltered By The Lifetime Capital Gains Exemption — Corporation Under GST/HST Review, Halifax

A corporation under a GST/HST review in Halifax, Nova Scotia was preparing to sell. However, passive assets sitting inside the operating company, disqualifying the shares disqualified the shares. Purification sheltered $775,000 under the exemption.

A corporation under a GST/HST review in Halifax, Nova Scotia had an offer on the table and 30 months to close. The shares did not qualify for the capital gains exemption. Passive assets sitting inside the operating company, disqualifying the shares was part of the reason. We purified the corporation so the shares met the qualifying tests. We requested the auditor’s working papers and report to see how the assessment had been built before answering any of it. All of it was done well ahead of the closing date. The sale closed on schedule with $775,000 sheltered by the lifetime capital gains exemption across the shareholders.

Case Study 3

Audit Defence Closed In 6 Weeks, $98,000 Cleared — Contractor Facing Reassessment, Kitchener

A contractor facing a proposed reassessment in Kitchener, Ontario was under review. The issue was a net-worth assessment built on unexplained deposits that were actually loan proceeds. The file closed in 6 weeks with $98,000 of proposed tax cleared.

A contractor facing a proposed reassessment in Kitchener, Ontario was selected for review. A net-worth assessment built on unexplained deposits that were actually loan proceeds had shown up in the CRA's automated matching. The proposed adjustment on SR&ED audit support came to $98,000. We kept the waiver narrowed to the issue actually under review and let the remaining years close on the normal reassessment period. Every figure in the response traced to a source record the auditor could verify without asking a second question. The review closed with no change. $98,000 of proposed tax came off the table, and the documentation now in place makes the next review a short one.

Case Study 4

$67,000 Cut From The Annual Tax Bill — Taxpayer Relief Applicant, Kelowna

A taxpayer applying for relief from penalties and interest in Kelowna, British Columbia was filing correctly and still overpaying. The reason was an audit conducted over the phone, with nothing on file showing what had been provided or when. Restructuring the position cut $67,000 from the annual bill.

A taxpayer applying for relief from penalties and interest in Kelowna, British Columbia was compliant but paying more than it needed to. The prior year had been filed correctly. It still left an audit conducted over the phone, with nothing on file showing what had been provided or when on the table. We modelled the current position against the alternatives before changing anything. Then we filed the disclosure through the Voluntary Disclosures Program before contact, which removed the gross-negligence penalty entirely. The change saved $67,000 in the first year and repeats annually. Nothing about the filings became more aggressive. The position is simply the one the rules already allowed.

Case Study 5

Month-End Close Cut From 8 Weeks To 7 Days — Voluntary Disclosure Applicant, Edmonton

Closing the books at a business owner considering a voluntary disclosure in Edmonton, Alberta took 8 weeks. The cause was a director liability assessment for a corporation that had already stopped operating. It now takes 7 days.

The accounting file at a business owner considering a voluntary disclosure in Edmonton, Alberta had a weak foundation. It was built on a director liability assessment for a corporation that had already stopped operating. The year-end had taken 8 weeks each of the last three years. We traced each unexplained deposit to its source — loans, transfers between accounts, an insurance settlement — and reduced the net-worth assessment accordingly. We also moved the reconciliations into the monthly cycle, so the year-end stopped being a rebuild. The file reconciles. Month-end closes in 7 days instead of 8 weeks, and the year-end is a review rather than a reconstruction.

Case Study 6

Notice Of Objection Allowed In Full, $57,000 Reversed — Importer Under Audit, Saskatoon

A $57,000 reassessment landed at an importer under a customs and GST audit in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. It rested on a confirmation letter left in a drawer until the appeal window had closed. The objection was allowed in full.

An importer under a customs and GST audit in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan had been reassessed for $57,000. 13 days were left on the objection deadline. The reassessment rested on a confirmation letter left in a drawer until the appeal window had closed. We filed the objection inside the deadline with a complete submission rather than a placeholder. Alongside it, we assembled the contemporaneous records, filed a structured response to each proposed adjustment with the supporting documents indexed, and had the proposal withdrawn. The appeals officer allowed the objection in full. $57,000 was reversed and the account returned to a nil balance.

Common Questions Before Starting SR&ED Audit Support Work

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does SR&ED Audit Support cost in Canada?

SR&ED Audit Support starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for SR&ED Audit Support?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does SR&ED Audit Support take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We serve clients in every province and territory at the same fixed fees, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for SR&ED Audit Support?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes SR&ED Audit Support different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in SR&ED Audit Support services?

Our sr&ed audit support services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with SR&ED Audit Support services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

What should I look for when choosing a provider for sr&ed audit support?

You are asking the right question, and it has a real answer. The VDP can waive gross-negligence penalties and part of the interest on unreported income or unfiled returns — but only while the disclosure is genuinely voluntary. The window closes the moment the CRA makes contact about the issue. Acting before that letter arrives is worth real money. What we add on top of that is the paperwork discipline that makes the answer stand up if anyone ever asks you to prove it.

How do I know if my business actually needs sr&ed audit support?

Our answer starts where the legislation starts. A review is won on documentation created at the time, not on explanations offered afterwards. The CRA asks for the source records behind a figure, and an unsupported claim is simply disallowed. Most reassessments we reverse are not the result of a wrong position — they are the result of a correct position with no contemporaneous paper trail behind it. From there it is a matter of applying it to your year — and that application, not the rule itself, is where a tax services provider earns the fee.

More SR&ED Audit Support Questions Canadians Ask

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

For individuals the tax year is the calendar year, 1 January to 31 December, and the return covering it is filed the following spring. The 2025 return was due 30 April 2026, or 15 June 2026 where you or your spouse were self-employed, though any balance owing was still payable by 30 April 2026. Corporations work differently: a corporation chooses its own fiscal year end and files a T2 six months after it.

Call the individual or business tax enquiries line listed on the CRA's Contact us page, then work through the automated menu to reach an agent. Have your social insurance number or business number, your date of birth and a line amount from your last assessed return ready, because the agent cannot discuss your file without them. Wait times are longest right after the filing deadline. My Account answers many questions without a call.

Pay through your bank's online bill payment, CRA My Payment, pre-authorised debit set up in My Account, a credit card through a third-party provider, or at a Canadian financial institution with a remittance voucher. Interest runs daily on an unpaid balance from the due date, so pay what you can even if you cannot clear it all. If you cannot pay in full, call the CRA to arrange a payment plan; penalty and interest relief is requested on form RC4288.

Call the CRA's individual or business enquiries line, both listed on the Contact the CRA page at canada.ca. Have your social insurance number or business number, your date of birth, and a line amount from a recent return ready, because the agent verifies you before discussing anything. Lines are quietest early in the morning and outside filing season. You can also authorise someone to call on your behalf using form AUT-01.

No. Filing and paying are legal obligations, not choices. What is voluntary is the self-assessment design: you report your own income and calculate the tax, and the CRA verifies afterwards. Ignoring the obligation leads to penalties, compounding interest, an assessment raised without your figures, and collection action such as garnishing wages. Arguments that income tax does not apply to individuals have failed in court every time. If you have unfiled years, ask about the CRA's voluntary disclosure route before it contacts you.

A refund is paid as one amount for the return it relates to, not in instalments. With direct deposit it usually arrives about two weeks after an online return is filed. The CRA can reduce or hold it to cover tax you owe for another year, or a debt it collects for another government program. If you file several years at once, each return produces its own separate refund.

All of it, at your own marginal rate rather than a special tip rate. Tips are added to your other income, so the tax depends on the bracket that income falls into: federal rates for 2026 start at 14% and rise through 20.5%, 26% and 29% to 33%, with provincial tax on top. Controlled tips paid through payroll already have income tax, CPP and EI withheld; tips received directly you report yourself.

The parent who paid the child care and had the child living with them claims it for that period. If you separated during the year, each parent claims what they paid while the child was in their care. Where parents live apart for the whole year and share the child, each claims their own payments, and the usual rule that the lower-income spouse must claim does not apply. Keep receipts showing the caregiver's name and social insurance number.

Daycare and preschool fees are deductible as child care expenses when the care allows a parent to work, run a business or study. The deduction normally goes to the lower-income spouse and is limited by the child's age and by a share of that spouse's earned income. Preschool counts as child care rather than education, so it qualifies; kindergarten inside a school system does not. Ask for receipts showing the provider's name, and their SIN for an individual carer.

There is no single cut-off. The Canada Child Benefit starts from a maximum per child and is reduced once adjusted family net income passes a first threshold, at a reduction rate that depends on how many children you have, with a different rate applying above a second threshold. A family with several children can still receive something at a fairly high income, while a one-child family phases out sooner. The CRA's child benefit calculator gives your own figure.

Yes. Dividends reinvested through a dividend reinvestment plan are taxed exactly like dividends taken in cash, in the year they are credited, and you get a T5 or T3 reporting them even though no money reached your bank account. Each reinvestment also adds to the adjusted cost base of your holding, which reduces the capital gain when you eventually sell, so keep every statement. Inside a TFSA, RRSP or FHSA there is nothing to report.

Have each new employee complete federal and provincial TD1 forms, then use the CRA payroll deductions online calculator or payroll software to work out income tax, CPP and EI for every pay period; a Quebec employee also needs Revenu Québec's calculator for Quebec provincial tax, QPP and QPIP, remitted to Revenu Québec and reported on an RL-1 alongside the T4. Remit the employee withholding together with the employer share by your assigned remitter due date, and report the totals on T4 slips after the calendar year ends. Late or short remittances attract penalties and interest.
