Key RRSP Deduction Review Terms, Defined

T1 General

T2 Corporate Return
The corporate income tax return every incorporated Canadian business must file.
GST/HST Return
The sales-tax return businesses file to remit GST/HST collected, net of input tax credits.
RRSP Deduction Review: Our Analysis

CRA reviews are won on documentation: every figure filed should trace to a source document, and deadlines — 90 days for an objection — are unforgiving. T1 returns are due April 30, and June 15 for the self-employed — though any balance owing still accrues interest from April 30. We quote rrsp deduction review as one budget-friendly fixed price — the budget-friendly alternative to hourly billing.

Practitioner Notes on RRSP Deduction Review

Good rrsp deduction review work is mostly about sequencing: which questions to settle before which. These notes lay out the sequence an accountant follows on RRSP Deduction Review engagements.

If you remember one thing from this page, make it this: Charitable donations can be carried forward for up to five years and claimed by either spouse, and the credit rate steps up above the first $200 of total gifts in a year. Small receipts claimed one year at a time sit in the low tier every time.

Layer a second constraint on top and the picture sharpens: Capital losses can be carried back three years against capital gains already reported, which turns a bad year into a refund rather than a carry-forward. One more rule deserves attention, mostly because ignoring it is expensive in ways that only show up later. Moving expenses are deductible where the new home is at least 40 kilometres closer to the new work location, and the deduction is limited to income earned at the new location.

None of this requires you to become an expert — that is what engaging a tax consultant is for. What it does require is recognizing that rrsp deduction review will reward preparation over improvisation. Gathering the following ahead of time turns the first rrsp deduction review conversation from fact-finding into decision-making.

Whatever the file involves, the terms do not change: fixed fee agreed up front, review together before filing, payment after the service.

Case Study 1

$19,500 Cut From The Annual Tax Bill — Student Filer, Red Deer

A full-time student with tuition credits and part-time earnings in Red Deer, Alberta was filing correctly and still overpaying because of years of small donation receipts claimed one at a time instead of pooled onto a single return. Restructuring the position cut $19,500 from the annual bill.

Case Study 2

Filed On Time From A Standing Start, $43,000 Penalty Avoided — Recently Separated Taxpayer, Regina

A recently separated taxpayer in Regina, Saskatchewan was 5 weeks from a deadline while carrying three years of returns filed without the slips that had been mailed to an old address. Filing complete and on time avoided roughly $43,000 in penalties.

Case Study 3

Collections Halted And $46,000 Cut From A 3-Year Backlog — Disability Amount Claimant, Burnaby

Collections had begun against a taxpayer claiming a dependant's transferred disability amount in Burnaby, British Columbia over 3 years of unfiled returns. Bringing them current cut $46,000 from the balance.

Case Study 4

$15,500 Reassessment Reduced To Nil On Review — Multi-Source Retiree, Saskatoon

A $15,500 reassessment was proposed against a retiree drawing from three sources in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan following foreign accounts that had crossed the T1135 threshold two years earlier. The documented response reduced it to nil.

Case Study 5

Remittance Schedule Corrected, $108,000 Refunded — Pension-Splitting Retiree, Surrey

Remittances at a retiree splitting eligible pension income with a spouse in Surrey, British Columbia were chronically late because of employment expenses claimed with no signed T2200 from the employer to support them. Fixing the schedule refunded $108,000.

Case Study 6

Notice Of Objection Allowed In Full, $41,000 Reversed — First-Time Home Buyer, Winnipeg

A $41,000 reassessment landed at a first-time home buyer in Winnipeg, Manitoba, resting on medical expenses claimed on a calendar-year basis when a shifted window was worth far more. The objection was allowed in full.

Questions Owners Ask About RRSP Deduction Review

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does RRSP Deduction Review cost in Canada?

RRSP Deduction Review starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for RRSP Deduction Review?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does RRSP Deduction Review take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We are a cloud-based practice serving every province and territory, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for RRSP Deduction Review?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes RRSP Deduction Review different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in RRSP Deduction Review services?

Our rrsp deduction review services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with RRSP Deduction Review services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

What records should I gather before starting rrsp deduction review?

Let us give you the substance first and the caveats second. Medical expenses can be claimed for any twelve-month period ending in the tax year, so choosing the window deliberately often produces a larger credit than a calendar-year claim. The caveat is simply that facts on your file can shift the outcome, so treat this as the baseline rather than the final word.

What does a tax practitioner actually check during rrsp deduction review?

A tax practitioner answers this differently than a search engine, because the rule has edges. Unused RRSP contribution room carries forward indefinitely, and a contribution made in a high-income year is worth materially more than the same dollar contributed in a low-income year. Where your business sits relative to those edges is what we establish in the first meeting.

Commonly Searched RRSP Deduction Review Questions

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

Online banking is the simplest route: add the CRA as a payee, select the account and tax year precisely, and pay from your chequing account. CRA My Payment takes debit card payments, and pre-authorised debit can be scheduled in My Account or My Business Account for a single amount or a run of instalments. Corporations and GST/HST registrants use the same channels under their business number. Keep the confirmation number and allow several days for the payment to post.

There is no single rate. Federal personal income tax for 2026 runs through five brackets: 14%, then 20.5%, 26%, 29% and 33% on the highest band, and your province's brackets stack on top, so your combined marginal rate is the federal rate plus the provincial one. The 2026 federal basic personal amount is $16,452, tapering to $14,829 as net income rises from $181,440 to $258,482. Capital gains and Canadian dividends are taxed on a different basis.

Rent on your home is not deductible on a Canadian return. Two situations change that. Self-employed people, and employees who meet the work-space-in-the-home conditions, may claim the share of rent tied to the area used for work. Several provinces also run a property tax or rent based credit, applied for on the provincial schedule filed with your T1, where rent paid affects the amount. Keep receipts and your landlord's details either way.

Ontario charges its own graduated personal rates, plus a surtax and the Ontario Health Premium, on top of federal tax, so the combined marginal rate climbs with income. For corporations in 2026 the Ontario small business rate is 3.2%, falling to 2.2% effective 1 July 2026, which gives a combined federal and provincial small business rate of 12.2% falling to 11.2%; a 31 December 2026 year end blends to roughly 11.7%. The Ontario combined general rate for 2026 is 26.5%.

A refund is the difference between the tax already paid on your behalf during the year and the tax you actually owe once income, deductions and credits are totalled on the return. Tax withheld from pay, instalments and refundable credits all count towards the amount paid. Where that total exceeds the tax calculated, the CRA refunds the excess; where it falls short, a balance is payable instead. The notice of assessment sets out the calculation.

Yes. Realty tax, real property tax, real estate tax and municipal tax all describe the same annual charge your city or town levies on assessed property value. A bill often splits it into a municipal portion and an education or school portion, which is why wording differs between notices. It is not land transfer tax, which is a one-time charge on purchase, and not the federal Underused Housing Tax, which is a separate filing regime.

Enter zero only where a line asks for an amount and that amount genuinely is nil; otherwise leave it blank. Software fills lines from your slips and entries, so blank and zero normally produce the same assessment. What matters is that every slip and income line is reported. On paper forms, an empty identification field, election box or signature can delay processing, so complete those even when the figure beside them is nil.

Yes. The lowest federal bracket rate was reduced and sits at 14% for the 2026 tax year. The other federal rates are unchanged at 20.5%, 26%, 29% and 33%, and each province sets its own rates separately. Because most non-refundable credits are calculated at the lowest rate, their value moves with it. Announced measures are not law until passed, so check the CRA's rates page before relying on any further proposal.

If you owe nothing, there is no late-filing penalty, but benefits and credits can be delayed. If you owe, the penalty is 5% of the unpaid balance plus 1% for each full month the return is late, to a maximum of 12 months. Interest also runs on the balance from the day after it was due. Repeat late filers who receive a formal demand face a higher penalty. File as soon as you can, even if you cannot pay.

Before- and after-school care generally counts as a child care expense that lets you work or study, so you claim it as child care expenses on the T1, normally by the spouse with the lower net income. Keep a receipt showing the provider's name and, for an individual caregiver, their social insurance number. Portions that are really tuition, transport or activity fees do not qualify. The amount you can claim is capped by the child's age and your earned income.

Education property tax is the school-support portion of a municipal property tax bill. Manitoba's education property tax credit gave homeowners and renters relief for that portion through the provincial part of the return, and the province has been restructuring this relief, so check Manitoba's current tax credit page for the year you are filing. Only one spouse claims the household's property tax amount. For Ontario's energy and property tax credit only one partner can apply, so compare which claim pays more.

Keep anything that supports a figure on your return: slips, deduction and credit receipts, and for a business every purchase invoice, sales record, bank and credit card statement and mileage log. Records must be kept six years from the end of the last tax year they relate to, so the records behind a 2025 return are kept until the end of 2031. Digital copies are acceptable provided they are legible and complete. Destroying records earlier needs written permission from the CRA.
