The Vocabulary Behind Bookkeeping Cleanup Services

T1 General
The personal income tax return individuals file with the CRA each year.
T2 Corporate Return
The corporate income tax return every incorporated Canadian business must file.
GST/HST Return
The sales-tax return businesses file to remit GST/HST collected, net of input tax credits.
Bookkeeping Cleanup Services: Our Analysis

Late-filing penalties start at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, and repeat late filers can see those figures double — catching up through the Voluntary Disclosures Program can cut the penalty side substantially. The CRA requires business records to be kept for six years from the end of the last tax year they relate to. Because the fee is fixed and economical, the economics stay predictable whether your file is simple or messy.

Practitioner’s Notes on Bookkeeping Cleanup Services

Good bookkeeping cleanup services work is mostly about sequencing: which questions to settle before which. These notes lay out the sequence an income tax specialist follows on Bookkeeping Cleanup Services engagements.

The first thing we verify on every engagement: Business records must be kept for six years from the end of the last tax year they relate to, and the CRA can require them in electronic form that it can actually read.

It would be simpler if the story ended there, but a second rule enters almost immediately. An input tax credit is only claimable where the supporting invoice carries the supplier’s GST/HST number — above $150 the invoice also needs the recipient’s name and a description of the supply. And on timing: Bank feeds are not a bookkeeping system. Auto-categorised transactions still need reconciliation to statements, because a duplicated feed entry is indistinguishable from a real expense on the face of the ledger.

What this means for you: the value in bookkeeping cleanup services is not the filing itself, it is having an income tax specialist apply these rules to your numbers before anything is submitted. Nothing slows a file like missing records, so for bookkeeping cleanup services begin with.

Whatever the file involves, the terms do not change: fixed fee agreed up front, review together before filing, payment after the service.

Bookkeeping Cleanup Services: Straight Answers to Common Questions

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does Bookkeeping Cleanup Services cost in Canada?

Bookkeeping Cleanup Services starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for Bookkeeping Cleanup Services?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does Bookkeeping Cleanup Services take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We are a cloud-based practice serving every province and territory, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for Bookkeeping Cleanup Services?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes Bookkeeping Cleanup Services different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in Bookkeeping Cleanup Services?

Our bookkeeping cleanup services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with Bookkeeping Cleanup Services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

What should I look for when choosing a provider for bookkeeping cleanup services?

Cash-basis records are not acceptable for a corporation. Income must be reported on the accrual basis, with receivables and payables recognised when they arise rather than when the money moves. That is the part most owners have not heard before they sit down with us, and it usually changes what they do next.

How do I know if my business actually needs bookkeeping cleanup services?

We get this one a lot, and the answer is more concrete than people expect. Bank feeds are not a bookkeeping system. Auto-categorised transactions still need reconciliation to statements, because a duplicated feed entry is indistinguishable from a real expense on the face of the ledger. Bring your documents and we will show you where it lands in your numbers.

What Canadians Search About Bookkeeping Cleanup Services

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

A tax deduction is an amount subtracted from your income before tax is worked out, so it reduces the income being taxed rather than the tax bill directly. Its worth depends on your marginal rate: the higher the rate, the more the deduction saves. Common examples are RRSP contributions, child care costs, union dues, moving expenses and business expenses. Credits work the other way, reducing the tax calculated on that income.

Canada runs three systems. The federal GST is 5% for 2026 and applies nationally. Five participating provinces fold a provincial share into one harmonised rate: 13% in Ontario, 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island, and 14% in Nova Scotia since 1 April 2025. Others add their own tax to the 5% GST, giving 12% in British Columbia and Manitoba, 11% in Saskatchewan and 14.975% in Quebec. Alberta and the territories charge 5% only.

You can pay through CRA My Business Account or My Payment, through your own financial institution's online banking by adding the CRA GST/HST payment as a payee under your business number, or by pre-authorised debit arranged in My Business Account. Third-party providers accept credit cards for a fee. Payment is due by the deadline for your reporting period, and filing the return does not by itself move the money, so schedule the two separately.

Divide the total by one plus the rate. At Ontario's 13% in 2026, a $113 tax-included total is $113 divided by 1.13, or $100 before tax and $13 of HST. Use 1.14 in Nova Scotia, 1.15 in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island, and 1.05 where only the 5% GST applies. Multiplying the total by 13 over 113 gives the Ontario tax directly.

Contact your municipality’s tax or revenue office and ask for a reissued bill; most cities also let you view and pay it in an online property tax account set up with your roll number. Not receiving the bill does not cancel the obligation or stop late-payment charges, so ask for the amount and due dates straight away. Update your mailing address, and check whether your lender already pays the tax through your mortgage.

No. Revenue is income you have earned and belongs on the income statement, not among liabilities. Money taken before you deliver the goods or service is different: unearned or deferred revenue is a liability until you perform the work. Sales tax you collect is also a liability rather than revenue. Booking customer deposits straight to sales is a common error that overstates profit and distorts the figures on your GST/HST return.

No. Capital is the owner's stake in the business, so it sits in equity, not liabilities. On a balance sheet, assets equal liabilities plus equity, and the capital account belongs on the equity side alongside retained earnings. Money the owner lends the business is different, because the business owes it back, and that is a liability. Keeping owner capital, owner loans and drawings in separate accounts prevents a messy reconciliation at year end.

Rent is not deductible against employment income, so most tenants claim nothing for it directly. It can still matter. Ontario tenants may report rent paid toward the Ontario energy and property tax credit on the provincial benefits schedule, and Quebec and Manitoba have their own renter measures. If you are self-employed or required to work from home, a reasonable share of rent based on workspace area is deductible. Keep receipts, the amounts paid and your landlord's details.

Sign in to CRA My Account and open the section for your returns, where assessed returns, notices of assessment and reassessment notices are held for several years. You can also request a proof of income statement, ask the CRA by phone for copies, or ask whoever prepared the return for their file copy. Keep your own records six years from the end of the last tax year they relate to.

You cannot write off the income itself, but you deduct the costs of earning it. Common current expenses are mortgage interest (not principal), property tax, insurance, utilities you pay, condo fees, advertising, property management, and repairs that maintain the property. Improvements that better the property are capital and depreciated instead. Only the rented portion counts where you also live there. Keep invoices for six years from the end of the tax year they relate to.

Your refund is the tax already withheld or paid minus the tax you actually owe once credits and deductions are applied, so there is no standard amount. Larger refunds usually come from over-withholding at source, RRSP contributions, tuition or medical claims, or a mid-year job change. Your notice of assessment shows the calculation. Online returns are typically processed in about two weeks; a non-resident return can take up to 16 weeks.

No. Care for your own children is a personal cost, so it cannot be deducted on a business statement or through a corporation, even if you work from home or the care is what lets you take on more work. Claim it instead as a child care expense deduction on the personal return of the lower-income spouse. If a corporation pays the bill, the amount is normally treated as a taxable benefit to the employee or shareholder.
