Words That Come Up in Business Number Registration Work

T1 General
The personal income tax return individuals file with the CRA each year.
T2 Corporate Return
The corporate income tax return every incorporated Canadian business must file.
GST/HST Return
The sales-tax return businesses file to remit GST/HST collected, net of input tax credits.
Business Number Registration: Our Analysis

Federal corporations file an annual return with Corporations Canada that is separate from the T2 — missing it can lead to administrative dissolution. Our business number registration engagement is priced as a affordable flat fee, so the cost is known before the work starts.

Things We've Learned Doing Business Number Registration Work

Good business number registration work is mostly about sequencing: which questions to settle before which. These notes lay out the sequence an income tax specialist follows on Business Number Registration engagements.

Ask any income tax specialist where business number registration files go sideways, and the answer usually traces back to this: A federally incorporated corporation has to maintain a register of individuals with significant control, keep it current, and be able to produce it on request. It is a standing obligation rather than a document assembled the week someone asks for it.

It would be simpler if the story ended there, but a second rule enters almost immediately. The tax on split income applies the top marginal rate to dividends paid to a family member who does not meet an excluded-amount test. Adding a spouse or an adult child as a shareholder does not split income by itself, and the test has to be met for the year the dividend is paid. And on timing: Minute books are not optional paperwork. Directors’ resolutions authorising dividends, bonuses and share issuances are what make those transactions stand up on audit.

Think of these rules as the fixed terrain; your circumstances decide the route through it. Mapping that route is the work an income tax specialist takes off your plate for business number registration. The smoothest files are the ones where the client arrives with these records already assembled.

When you are ready, the process is straightforward — we agree a fixed fee up front, prepare the work, walk you through it before filing, and you pay once the service is delivered.

Business Number Registration Questions We Hear Most Often

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does Business Number Registration cost in Canada?

Business Number Registration starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for Business Number Registration?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does Business Number Registration take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We are a cloud-based practice serving every province and territory, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for Business Number Registration?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes Business Number Registration different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in Business Number Registration services?

Our business number registration services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with Business Number Registration services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

What goes wrong most often with business number registration?

There is a widespread assumption here, and the actual position is worth stating plainly. The first fiscal year-end must fall within 53 weeks of incorporation and sets every future filing deadline, so it is worth choosing deliberately rather than defaulting to December 31. If your current setup was built on the assumption instead of the rule, that is fixable — but sooner is better than later.

What does a tax preparation specialist actually check during business number registration?

A federal corporation must file an annual return with Corporations Canada that is entirely separate from its T2. Missing it repeatedly leads to administrative dissolution. We flag this early with every client it touches, because finding it out at filing time leaves you far fewer options than finding it out now.

Commonly Searched Business Number Registration Questions

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

Paper returns go to the CRA tax centre that serves your province or territory of residence, not to one national address. The correct address is printed in the paper return package and listed on canada.ca under mailing addresses for individual returns, and it differs for non-residents and for business returns. Filing electronically is much faster: for the 2025 tax year the CRA aims to issue a refund on an online return in about two weeks, against a considerably longer standard on paper.

A TD1 Personal Tax Credits Return tells your employer which personal credits to build into your income tax withholding, so the right amount comes off each pay. You normally complete a federal TD1 and a provincial or territorial TD1 when you start a job. File a fresh pair whenever your situation changes, for instance a new dependant, tuition, or a second employer, where you should not claim the basic personal amount twice.

About two weeks for a return filed online with direct deposit in place. A non-resident return can take up to sixteen weeks. Those are service targets rather than guarantees: a return selected for review, a missing slip, or a mismatch with what a payer reported will add time. You can follow the status in CRA My Account, and amounts you owe elsewhere may be taken off the refund first.

Payroll deductions are calculated as if your current pay rate continued all year, using the credits you claimed on the personal tax credits form you gave your employer. Deductions look low if you started mid-year, work part-time or irregular hours, over-claimed credits, or hold two jobs where each employer applies the basic personal amount and neither sees the other's pay. Income without withholding, such as self-employment or investments, adds to what you owe at filing.

Rent you receive is taxable. A landlord reports gross rents, deducts expenses such as mortgage interest, property tax, insurance, repairs and a share of utilities, and adds the net figure to income. Rent you pay as a tenant is not deductible federally, although Ontario and some other provinces give a rent-related benefit through the return. Long-term residential rent is exempt from GST/HST, while short-term accommodation generally is not.

Not quite. The business number is the root identifier for your business, and every account you register sits on it with a two-letter program identifier and a reference for that account, so GST/HST, payroll and corporate income tax all share one root. Your GST/HST number is that root plus the GST/HST program identifier. Quote the full account number on returns, remittances and invoices, not just the root, or payments can land in the wrong account.

No. TFSA withdrawals are not taxable and are not reported as income, however much the account has earned, and that is still true for 2026. The amount you take out is added back to your contribution room, but only on 1 January of the following year. Putting it back in the same calendar year without room to cover it creates an excess taxed at 1% per month. Withdrawals do not affect income-tested benefits.

Your business number appears on every CRA notice, statement of account and remittance voucher, on GST/HST and payroll correspondence, and in My Business Account once you sign in. It is also on the confirmation issued when the account was opened, and on incorporation paperwork if the number came with registration. If nothing is to hand, the CRA business enquiries line can confirm it once it verifies that you are authorised to ask.

Yes, but through your municipality rather than the CRA. Cities and towns run their own property tax portals where you can see the account balance, instalment dates and past bills using the roll or account number from your tax bill, and many also show the assessed value from the provincial assessment body. Property tax is not reported on a T1, though it can matter for a home-office claim or a provincial property-tax credit.

Rent paid on your own home is not deductible on the federal return, so most tenants report nothing. Rent does belong on the return in three cases: you are claiming a provincial benefit that is based on rent, such as the Ontario energy and property tax credit or the Manitoba renters tax credit; you are deducting a work-space-in-the-home share as an employee or a self-employed person; or you received rent as a landlord, which is taxable income.

Start with complete expense claims: the business share of vehicle costs backed by a mileage log, home office space, supplies, subcontractors, insurance and professional fees. Business meals and entertainment are only partly deductible, and the restriction applies to the whole bill including tax and tip — record the full amount and apply the limit on the return. Register for GST/HST when the rules require it so input tax credits can be recovered on purchases. Then use RRSP room to level out a strong year, and look at incorporating once profits sit well above what you draw for living costs.

No. CPP retirement, disability and survivor benefits are pension income, not employment income. They are fully taxable and reported from the annual CPP benefit slip, but they build no RRSP contribution room and attract no further CPP contributions. The distinction matters because several amounts, including RRSP room, the Canada employment amount and childcare-related deductions, are tied to employment or earned income rather than pension income.
