T1 General

GST/HST Return
The sales-tax return businesses file to remit GST/HST collected, net of input tax credits.
Victoria: Our Analysis

Victoria layers the provincial government's contractor ecosystem over a real tech cluster and a heavyweight tourism season. Consultants to government watch personal services business risk; startups claim SR&ED and BC's venture capital investor tax credit; and hospitality operators manage tip reporting and seasonal staffing. Greater Victoria sits fully inside the speculation and vacancy tax area, and BC's Employer Health Tax starts at $1,000,000 of payroll.

What We Notice Preparing Victoria Files

Practice notes from a tax specialist who prepares returns for Victoria businesses every week — what actually trips owners up here, and what to sort out before filing season arrives.

The first thing a Victoria business must get right is the sales-tax regime. BC charges 5% GST plus a separate 7% PST. These are filed with two different authorities on different schedules, and PST is not recoverable as an input tax credit the way GST is.

Every year we run the same exercise with incorporated Victoria clients: hold the provincial rate picture up against the draft numbers. BC applies a 2% small business rate, producing an 11% combined rate — among the lowest in Canada. The planning window closes with the fiscal year, so the review has to happen while there is still time to act.

There is a provincial side to payroll that the payroll software will not explain to you. BC Employer Health Tax applies once annual BC payroll exceeds $1,000,000. Getting it registered and remitted correctly is part of what proper payroll setup means in Victoria.

British Columbia runs its own incentive programs — BC Small Business Venture Capital Tax Credit, BC Scientific Research and Experimental Development Tax Credit, BC Clean Buildings Tax Credit among them — and a year-end review is the only way to know which apply. It shapes how we scope every Victoria file.

Local knowledge in tax work is really sector knowledge. Victoria runs on technology, film and television, natural resources, tourism and real estate, so that is where a tax professional's pattern recognition gets built — and where it pays off on your return.

The thing your postal code will never change is our price. We serve all of Canada at the same fixed fee — no location premium — and payment only happens after you have reviewed the finished work. It is the first thing we walk Victoria owners through.

Victoria Tax & Accounting Case Studies

See how our expert Victoria tax and accounting services have helped Canadian businesses save money and stay compliant.

Case Study 1

$745,000 Sheltered By The Lifetime Capital Gains Exemption — Bakery and Cafe, Victoria

A bakery and cafe in Victoria, British Columbia was preparing to sell. However, a single shareholder holding every share, with no room to multiply the exemption disqualified the shares. Purification sheltered $745,000 under the exemption.

A bakery and cafe in Victoria, British Columbia had an offer on the table and 27 months to close. The shares did not qualify for the capital gains exemption. A single shareholder holding every share, with no room to multiply the exemption was part of the reason. We purified the corporation so the shares met the qualifying tests. We assessed and claimed BC Small Business Venture Capital Tax Credit alongside the federal return. All of it was done well ahead of the closing date. The sale closed on schedule with $745,000 sheltered by the lifetime capital gains exemption across the shareholders.

Case Study 2

$98,000 Of Penalties And Interest Cancelled On Relief — Family-Run Inn, Victoria

A family-run inn with a licensed dining room in Victoria, British Columbia was carrying $98,000 of penalties and interest. The charges arose from input tax credits claimed against BC provincial tax, which is not recoverable the way GST is. A relief application cancelled that amount.

An assessment of $98,000 landed at a family-run inn with a licensed dining room in Victoria, British Columbia following a desk review. It turned on input tax credits claimed against BC provincial tax, which is not recoverable the way GST is. The auditor had not seen the records behind it. We registered the provincial payroll account, caught up the outstanding remittances, and applied for relief on the penalty. We then set out the legislative basis for the position alongside the documents supporting it. $98,000 of penalties and interest was cancelled under the taxpayer relief provisions, and the underlying assessment was adjusted to match the filed position.

Case Study 3

Instalments Rebased, $143,000 Of Cash Returned To The Business — Mobile App Studio, Victoria

A mobile app studio in Victoria, British Columbia was overpaying instalments. The cause was provincial sales tax collected but never remitted on the separate BC return. Rebasing them returned $143,000 to the business.

A mobile app studio in Victoria, British Columbia was paying instalments calculated on a prior year. That year no longer reflected the business. Provincial sales tax collected but never remitted on the separate BC return was tying up $143,000 of cash. We rebased the instalments on the current-year estimate rather than the prior-year default. Alongside that, we recalculated the corporate tax at the 11% combined small business rate and rebased the instalments on the current year. $143,000 of cash stayed in the business, the penalty cycle ended, and the instalment position is reviewed each quarter against actual results.

Case Study 4

$103,000 Reassessment Reduced To Nil On Review — Residential Rental Portfolio, Victoria

A $103,000 reassessment was proposed against a residential rental portfolio in Victoria, British Columbia. It followed instalments still calculated on a year the business had long outgrown. The documented response reduced it to nil.

A review notice arrived at a residential rental portfolio in Victoria, British Columbia, covering its BC tax and accounting file for two tax years. The auditor's working position was an adjustment of $103,000. It was driven by instalments still calculated on a year the business had long outgrown. Rather than negotiate, we rebuilt the record. We separated the federal GST and BC provincial sales tax streams, reconciled both to the sales ledger, and filed the corrected provincial returns. We then submitted a point-by-point response that answered each proposed adjustment with the document behind it. The auditor accepted the documented position and closed the review without adjustment, protecting $103,000 and leaving the prior filings undisturbed.

Case Study 5

$123,000 Of Arbitrary Assessments Vacated After 3 Years — Bar and Live-Music Venue, Victoria

The CRA had assessed a bar and live-music venue in Victoria, British Columbia on estimates across 3 unfiled years. Real filings vacated $123,000 of that tax.

3 years of unfiled returns had turned into notional assessments at a bar and live-music venue in Victoria, British Columbia. Underneath lay sector-specific exposure the previous accountant had not seen before. Collections had already started. We assessed and claimed BC Scientific Research and Experimental Development Tax Credit alongside the federal return. We then filed every outstanding year in chronological order so the CRA could vacate the notional assessments cleanly. All 3 years were accepted as filed. $123,000 of arbitrarily assessed tax was vacated, collections action stopped, and the account is current for the first time in 3 years.

Case Study 6

$14,000 Late-Filing Penalty Cancelled On Relief Application — Seasonal Cabin Motel, Victoria

A seasonal motel with a row of housekeeping cabins in Victoria, British Columbia had already been penalised. The issue was a provincial payroll levy that had never been registered for or remitted. A relief application cancelled $14,000 of that penalty.

A seasonal motel with a row of housekeeping cabins in Victoria, British Columbia had already missed one deadline and was about to miss a second. Behind it sat a provincial payroll levy that had never been registered for or remitted. A penalty of $14,000 was accruing. We split the work into what had to happen before the deadline and what could follow it. Then we assessed and claimed BC Small Business Venture Capital Tax Credit alongside the federal return. The outstanding return was accepted as filed, and the taxpayer relief application cancelled $14,000 of the penalty already assessed on the earlier year.

Victoria Tax Filing Frequently Asked Questions

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does a tax accountant in Victoria cost?

Corporate tax filing starts at $90 and monthly bookkeeping at $10, the same fixed rates we charge nationally. Victoria businesses pay no location premium, and the quote is agreed before work starts. See the full pricing breakdown.

Do I need to meet my Victoria accountant in person?

No. Everything runs through a secure portal with e-signatures, so documents never travel by mail and nothing is lost in transit. Clients across Victoria complete an entire filing without a single in-person meeting, though calls are always available.

Which tax deadlines apply to Victoria businesses?

Corporate T2 returns are due six months after your fiscal year-end, with any balance owing payable within two or three months depending on your CCPC status. Personal T1 returns are due April 30, and June 15 for the self-employed. GST/HST depends on your filing frequency.

Can you handle both my corporate and personal returns?

Yes, and doing both together is where most of the planning value sits. Salary-versus-dividend mix, shareholder loans and RRSP room interact across the two returns, and treating them separately is how owners overpay. Explore all our services.

What if my books are behind by several years?

That is routine work for us. We rebuild the ledger year by year, file the outstanding returns in sequence, and where eligible apply to the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties and interest.

Are you taking on new clients in Victoria?

Yes, we are actively taking on new corporate and personal clients in Victoria, including mid-season transfers from another accountant. Transferring is straightforward and we request the prior files on your behalf.

What industries do you serve in Victoria?

Construction, healthcare and medical practices, restaurants, e-commerce, real estate, transportation, professional services, technology startups and registered non-profits. Each carries a distinct deduction profile. See our industry specialisms.

How do I switch to your firm from my current accountant?

Tell us who currently holds your files and we handle the professional handover, including requesting working papers and prior-year returns. There is no gap in your compliance and no awkward conversation required on your side.

What is the deadline for filing corporate taxes in Victoria?

In Victoria, corporate tax returns (T2) are due within six months of the corporation's fiscal year-end. If you owe tax, the balance must be paid within 2 or 3 months of the year-end.

How much do tax accountants in Victoria charge?

Our personal tax filing services in Victoria start from $25, and corporate tax returns start from $90, offered under our 100% Risk-Free price match guarantee.

Does your accounting firm handle CRA audits for clients in Victoria?

Yes! We provide direct CRA audit defense and representation services for businesses and individuals throughout British Columbia and across Canada.

Do you have an office in Victoria?

We do not have a storefront in Victoria. Documents are exchanged on secure cloud software and everything is signed electronically, and the fee is the same in Victoria as anywhere else in Canada, with no location premium. Our head office is at 381 Front St W, Toronto, and you can reach the team on +1-416-619-0068.

What sales tax does a Victoria business charge?

BC charges 5% GST plus a separate 7% PST. These are filed with two different authorities on different schedules, and PST is not recoverable as an input tax credit the way GST is. It is usually the first correction we make on a new Victoria file.

What corporate tax rates apply to a Victoria corporation?

BC applies a 2% small business rate, producing an 11% combined rate — among the lowest in Canada. That is the backdrop for every Victoria engagement we take on.

People Also Ask About Victoria

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

Sales tax in British Columbia totals 12% for 2026: the 5% federal GST plus 7% provincial sales tax. BC is not harmonised, so the two run separately, with GST registered and filed with the CRA and PST with the province. A $100 taxable sale carries $5 GST and $7 PST. PST has its own exemptions, including most food for human consumption, so some sales take the 5% GST only.

A TD1 Personal Tax Credits Return tells your employer which personal credits to build into your income tax withholding, so the right amount comes off each pay. You normally complete a federal TD1 and a provincial or territorial TD1 when you start a job. File a fresh pair whenever your situation changes, for instance a new dependant, tuition, or a second employer, where you should not claim the basic personal amount twice.

The route depends on the structure. A sole proprietor or partner reports business income on Form T2125 and files it with the personal T1 return; for the 2025 year the self-employed filing deadline was 15 June 2026, while any balance owing was due 30 April 2026. An incorporated business files a separate T2 corporate return for each fiscal year, due six months after that year end, on top of whatever the owner reports personally.

Federal income tax is the share of income tax that goes to the federal government, calculated on taxable income using federal brackets and then reduced by federal credits. Your province or territory levies its own income tax on the same income, which is why a paycheque outside Quebec shows one blended deduction rather than two. Employers estimate both when withholding. For your own figure, read the federal tax line on your assessed T1 rather than a rate table.

Some services only. BC's 7% PST reaches legal services, telecommunication services, accommodation, and work performed on goods such as repair, maintenance and installation. Many other services, including most professional and consulting fees, fall outside PST, though the 5% GST still applies to them. Because the list is specific rather than general, check the province's PST bulletin for your line of work before you register, charge tax or price a quote.

Yes, where you owe. The late-filing penalty is 5% of the unpaid balance plus 1% for each full month the return is late, up to 12 months. It rises to 10% plus 2% a month, to 20 months, only where the CRA formally demanded the return and charged you a late-filing penalty in one of the three preceding years. Compound daily interest runs on the balance as well. With nothing owing, there is no penalty.

Sometimes. When a BC seller ships taxable goods to a buyer in the province, PST at 7% applies to the delivery or freight charge as part of the price of those goods. If the goods themselves are exempt, the related delivery charge is exempt too. Freight billed separately by an arm's-length carrier for a transportation service is not subject to PST. GST applies to the freight either way. Check the province's PST bulletin on delivery charges.

There is no age or milestone at which refunds stop. A refund only means more tax was withheld or paid by instalments during the year than the return finally calculates, so it turns on your income mix each year. Retirees often stop seeing refunds because pension, RRIF and investment income tends to be under-withheld, which produces a balance owing instead. You can ask a payer to withhold more, or pay instalments, to change that.

Your refund is the tax already withheld or paid minus the tax you actually owe once credits and deductions are applied, so there is no standard amount. Larger refunds usually come from over-withholding at source, RRSP contributions, tuition or medical claims, or a mid-year job change. Your notice of assessment shows the calculation. Online returns are typically processed in about two weeks; a non-resident return can take up to 16 weeks.

GST at 5% applies to paid parking in British Columbia. BC PST is not charged on parking, because parking is a service rather than a taxable good, so you should not see a 7% provincial line on the receipt. Metro Vancouver adds its own regional tax on parking rights, which is normally built into the posted price rather than shown as a sales tax. Compare the receipt with the operator's fee schedule if the total looks wrong.

Other income is the catch-all line on the T1 for taxable amounts that fit nowhere else: certain retiring allowances, death benefits, some scholarship, bursary or grant income, and various payments reported on a T4A that have no dedicated line of their own. It is ordinary income taxed at your marginal rate. Tax is often not withheld on these amounts, so they can leave a balance owing. Match the slip's box number to the CRA guide before choosing a line.

Sometimes. Many lenders collect property tax along with the mortgage payment, hold it in a tax account and remit it to the municipality for you, which is common on high-ratio insured mortgages. Other lenders leave you to pay the municipality directly. Your mortgage statement shows whether a tax portion is being collected. Where the lender pays, do not also set up a municipal plan, and review the tax account yearly for a shortfall.
