CRA Program Account Setup: Our Analysis

The first fiscal year-end must fall within 53 weeks of incorporation and sets every future filing deadline, so it is worth choosing deliberately. We quote cra program account setup as one cheap fixed price — the budget-friendly alternative to hourly billing.

From the Desk of Your Tax Consultant

CRA Program Account Setup can look routine from the outside. Sit on the practitioner's side of the desk for a while and you learn which parts genuinely are routine — and which parts reward a tax consultant's full attention.

Start with the rule that decides most files: The tax on split income applies the top marginal rate to dividends paid to a family member who does not meet an excluded-amount test. Adding a spouse or an adult child as a shareholder does not split income by itself, and the test has to be met for the year the dividend is paid.

The second point is quieter but costs more when missed. A federally incorporated corporation has to maintain a register of individuals with significant control, keep it current, and be able to produce it on request. It is a standing obligation rather than a document assembled the week someone asks for it. Then there is the matter of timing, which forgives very little: The first fiscal year-end must fall within 53 weeks of incorporation and sets every filing deadline that follows. Share structure decided at incorporation governs who can receive dividends later. Year-one choices are cheap to make and expensive to undo. Restructuring share classes after value has accrued triggers its own tax consequences.

None of this is exotic — but each point has to be applied to your facts, which is exactly what you are paying an accountant to do. Before the first meeting, it helps to pull together the records that let a tax consultant see your situation whole.

When you are ready, the process is straightforward — we agree a fixed fee up front, prepare the work, walk you through it before filing, and you pay once the service is delivered.

Case Study 2

5 Years Filed, $90,000 Removed From The Assessed Balance — New Program Registrant, Vancouver

5 years of returns were outstanding at a corporation registering its CRA program accounts in Vancouver, British Columbia, on top of a corporation dissolved administratively for missed annual returns while still operating. Filing on real numbers removed $90,000 of assessed tax.

Case Study 3

Case Study 4

Scaled To 61 Staff With $15,000 Of Working Capital Freed — Pre-Investment Startup, Barrie

Growth at a startup preparing for its first investment round in Barrie, Ontario had outrun the back office, and dividends paid for three years with no directors’ resolutions behind them broke first. Headcount reached 61 with $15,000 of cash freed.

Case Study 5

$126,000 Of Working Capital Freed From The Tax Cycle — New Professional Corporation, Victoria

Your CRA Program Account Setup Questions, Answered

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does CRA Program Account Setup cost in Canada?

CRA Program Account Setup starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for CRA Program Account Setup?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does CRA Program Account Setup take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We are a cloud-based practice serving every province and territory, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for CRA Program Account Setup?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes CRA Program Account Setup different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in CRA Program Account Setup services?

Our cra program account setup services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with CRA Program Account Setup services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

Is cra program account setup something I can catch up on if I have fallen behind?

The honest answer comes down to one rule. A federal corporation must file an annual return with Corporations Canada that is entirely separate from its T2. Missing it repeatedly leads to administrative dissolution. That is the part we verify before anything is filed.

What information will you ask me for once the cra program account setup work is underway?

Our answer starts where the legislation starts. A CCPC files its T2 within six months of year-end, with the balance due two months after (three where the small business deduction is claimed). The 9% federal small business rate applies to the first $500,000 of active business income. The filing and payment deadlines differ, and interest runs from the payment date. Filing on time while paying late still costs money. From there it is a matter of applying it to your year — and that application, not the rule itself, is where an accounting firm earns the fee.

Searched Questions About CRA Program Account Setup

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

Paper returns go to the CRA tax centre that serves your province or territory of residence, not to one national address. The correct address is printed in the paper return package and listed on canada.ca under mailing addresses for individual returns, and it differs for non-residents and for business returns. Filing electronically is much faster: for the 2025 tax year the CRA aims to issue a refund on an online return in about two weeks, against a considerably longer standard on paper.

A refund is the tax already paid minus the tax actually owed. Add the income tax withheld on your slips to any instalments you paid, work out tax payable on your total income after deductions and credits, and the difference comes back if the first figure is larger. Large refunds usually trace to over-withholding on employment income, RRSP contributions, or credits transferred to you. Run the numbers through the CRA's or a commercial estimator before you file.

As the rules stand for the 2025 tax year filed in 2026, the late-filing penalty is 5% of the balance owing plus 1% of that balance for each full month the return is late, to a maximum of 12 months, so 17% at worst. It rises to 10% plus 2% per month for up to 20 months, a 50% maximum, but only where the CRA formally demanded the return and had already charged a late-filing penalty for any of the three preceding tax years. Interest compounds daily.

Income tax starts once taxable income passes the basic personal amount, and a separate provincial or territorial amount applies on top, so the break-even point shifts every year with indexation and differs by where you live. Look up the current amounts on the CRA site or in the year's return package. Credits for tuition, disability, pension income or dependants push the point higher. Filing can still be worthwhile or required with no tax owing, for benefits and credits.

The business number is the single identifier the CRA uses for your business, with a separate programme account opened under it for each obligation: GST/HST, payroll deductions, corporate income tax, import and export. Register through Business Registration Online, by phone or by mail, or receive one automatically when you incorporate federally. You need it before you can remit payroll or file GST/HST. Provincial registration is separate in some provinces, notably Quebec, where Revenu Québec administers its own accounts.

A return filed online is usually assessed within about two weeks, and the notice of assessment appears in My Account as soon as that happens. Some returns are held for a review of slips, receipts or credits, which adds time without meaning anything is wrong. A non-resident return can take up to sixteen weeks. Register for My Account and email notifications so you see the notice the day it issues.

Sign in to CRA My Account and open the tax returns and tax information slips sections. Slips your employers, banks and payers filed with the CRA appear there, including T4, T4A and T5, usually by late March for the previous year. You can also download notices of assessment, prior-year returns and your RRSP and TFSA room statements. Slips arrive at different times, so confirm everything you expect is listed before you file.

The balance begins accruing compound daily interest from the payment due date, and filing late adds a separate late-filing penalty on top of it. If nothing is paid the file moves to collections, where the CRA can keep refunds and benefit payments, garnish wages or a bank account, and register a lien against property. Filing on time and agreeing a payment arrangement, even a partial one, prevents most of that. Interest runs until the balance reaches zero.

Your business number appears on every CRA notice, statement of account and remittance voucher, on GST/HST and payroll correspondence, and in My Business Account once you sign in. It is also on the confirmation issued when the account was opened, and on incorporation paperwork if the number came with registration. If nothing is to hand, the CRA business enquiries line can confirm it once it verifies that you are authorised to ask.

Match what is withheld to what you will owe. Ask your employer to deduct extra tax if you have a second job, a pension, or investment income with nothing taken off, and review the credits you claimed on the personal tax credits return you filed with them. Self-employed people should set money aside each month and pay instalments when the CRA asks. RRSP contributions made before the annual contribution deadline early in the next year also cut the balance.

Ornamental plants are taxable. Cut flowers, houseplants, shrubs, trees and potted arrangements all carry GST or HST at your province's rate. Plants and seeds that produce food for people are treated as basic groceries and are zero-rated, which covers vegetable seedlings and garden seed for edible crops, and some bulk agricultural seed and nursery stock sold to farmers is zero-rated as well. A garden centre applies both rules, so one bill can be part taxed.

Some are. Unused tuition, disability, age and pension income amounts can be transferred to a spouse, parent or grandparent within limits, and tuition not transferred carries forward for the student indefinitely. Most other non-refundable credits only reduce tax to zero and are then lost, because they cannot be refunded. Donations and student loan interest carry forward for a limited number of later years, and CRA's page for each credit states its transfer and carry-forward rules. Refundable credits are paid even with no tax payable.
