St. John's: Our Analysis

St. John's runs Atlantic Canada's offshore-oil head offices next to a real tech and ocean-science cluster. Offshore rotations raise travel and overseas-work questions; startups claim SR&ED and NL's Interactive Digital Media and Green Technology credits; and downtown hospitality manages tips and payroll. Employers watch the 2% HAPSET payroll tax past $2 million of payroll, while the 15% HST files as one combined return with full input tax credits.

A Tax Advisor's Notes on St. John's

What does a tax advisor check first when a St. John's file lands on the desk? The same short list every time — and it starts with the provincial side.

Before anything else, sales tax: Newfoundland and Labrador uses a single 15% HST administered by the CRA, filed on one combined return. It is usually the first correction we make on a new St. John's file.

Newfoundland and Labrador applies a 2.5% small business rate (reduced from 3% in 2024), giving an 11.5% combined rate on the first $500,000. Read that alongside your year-end date and it changes the calculus on when to invoice, when to buy equipment, and how much to leave in the company. Every St. John's file we prepare starts from that reality.

Payroll setup done properly means registration, a remittance calendar, and the provincial levy, in that order. The 2% Health and Post-Secondary Education Tax (HAPSET) applies once annual NL payroll exceeds $2,000,000. We set all of it up together for St. John's employers so nothing surfaces mid-year as a surprise.

Provincial credits are the most commonly unclaimed money we see: NL Manufacturing and Processing Investment Tax Credit, NL Green Technology Tax Credit, NL Interactive Digital Media Tax Credit are all worth a look in an eligible year. St. John's clients feel this one directly on the first return we file together.

A city's tax questions are downstream of its industries. In St. John's that means offshore oil and gas, fisheries, mining, tourism and ocean technology, and it means a tax practitioner here spends most of the year on the filing patterns those sectors produce.

Ready to hand this off? Send your documents from wherever you are in the country — we charge the same fixed fee in every market, and only invoice after you have looked over the completed file. That is the backdrop for every St. John's engagement we take on.

St. John's Tax & Accounting Case Studies

See how our expert St. John's tax and accounting services have helped Canadian businesses save money and stay compliant.

Case Study 1

Books Rebuilt From Source, $17,500 In Unclaimed Input Tax Found — Extended-Stay Hotel, St. John's

The ledger at a small hotel where corporate guests book by the month in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador could not support its own filings. The reason was sector-specific exposure the previous accountant had not seen before. Rebuilding it surfaced $17,500 in unclaimed input tax.

A small hotel where corporate guests book by the month in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador could not answer basic questions about its own numbers. Sector-specific exposure the previous accountant had not seen before sat between the bank statements and the ledger. We assessed and claimed NL Green Technology Tax Credit alongside the federal return. We then documented the process so the work does not depend on any one person remembering how it was done. Records rebuilt and reconciled, $17,500 recovered in input tax credits that the old file could not support, and a documented monthly process now in place.

Case Study 2

Intergenerational Transfer Completed With $755,000 Deferred — Craft Brewery, St. John's

A family transfer at a craft brewery with a taproom in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador would have been fully taxable. The reason was a minute book with no resolutions behind a decade of dividends. Restructuring deferred $755,000.

A generational transfer at a craft brewery with a taproom in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador had been discussed for years without a plan. A minute book with no resolutions behind a decade of dividends meant the transfer as contemplated would have been fully taxable. We registered the provincial payroll account, caught up the outstanding remittances, and applied for relief on the penalty. We sequenced the steps so each one was complete and documented before the next depended on it. $755,000 of tax was deferred through the transfer, and the successor generation took over a corporation whose records stood up to review.

Case Study 3

Instalments Rebased, $127,000 Of Cash Returned To The Business — Bar and Live-Music Venue, St. John's

A bar and live-music venue in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador was overpaying instalments. The cause was instalments still calculated on a year the business had long outgrown. Rebasing them returned $127,000 to the business.

A bar and live-music venue in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador was paying instalments calculated on a prior year. That year no longer reflected the business. Instalments still calculated on a year the business had long outgrown was tying up $127,000 of cash. We rebased the instalments on the current-year estimate rather than the prior-year default. Alongside that, we rebuilt the sales ledger by customer location, applied the correct place-of-supply rate to each stream, and filed the adjusted HST returns. $127,000 of cash stayed in the business, the penalty cycle ended, and the instalment position is reviewed each quarter against actual results.

Case Study 4

Collections Halted And $73,000 Cut From A 5-Year Backlog — Logging Contractor, St. John's

Collections had begun against a logging contractor in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador over 5 years of unfiled returns. Bringing them current cut $73,000 from the balance.

By the time a logging contractor in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador called, 5 years were outstanding. The CRA had assessed on estimates. Underneath it sat a provincial payroll levy that had never been registered for or remitted. We reconstructed the records year by year. We assessed and claimed NL Manufacturing and Processing Investment Tax Credit alongside the federal return. Each filing replaced an arbitrary assessment with a real one. The account is current. Filing on real numbers rather than CRA estimates reduced the balance by $73,000, and a relief application addressed part of the accumulated interest.

Case Study 5

Remuneration Review Saved $14,500 Across Corporate And Personal Returns — B2B SaaS Company, St. John's

A remuneration review at a B2B SaaS company in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador saved $14,500 across the corporate and personal returns. It found 15% HST charged on every sale regardless of where the customer was located.

Nothing was wrong at a B2B SaaS company in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. The filings were on time and accurate. What they were not was planned. 15% HST charged on every sale regardless of where the customer was located had never been reviewed. We recalculated the corporate tax at the 11.5% combined small business rate and rebased the instalments on the current year. We ran the numbers across both the corporate and personal returns, so the saving was real rather than deferred into someone else's hands. $14,500 came off the combined corporate and personal tax bill, and the structure holds for future years without further work.

Case Study 6

Corporate Structure Rebuilt For $65,000 Of Annual Savings — Cybersecurity Firm, St. John's

The structure at a cybersecurity firm in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador no longer fitted the business. Sector-specific exposure the previous accountant had not seen before showed it. Rebuilding it saves $65,000 a year.

The structure at a cybersecurity firm in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador dated from years earlier. It had been set up for a business that no longer existed. Sector-specific exposure the previous accountant had not seen before had become expensive. We assessed and claimed NL Green Technology Tax Credit alongside the federal return. The reorganisation used the rollover provisions rather than a taxable transfer, so no tax fell due on the restructuring itself. $65,000 of annual saving, achieved on a tax-deferred basis. The minute book, elections and valuations are all in the file.

St. John's Tax Filing Questions We Hear Most Often

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does a tax accountant in St. John's cost?

Corporate tax filing starts at $90 and monthly bookkeeping at $10, the same fixed rates we charge nationally. St. John's businesses pay no location premium, and the quote is agreed before work starts. See the full pricing breakdown.

Do I need to meet my St. John's accountant in person?

No. Everything runs through a secure portal with e-signatures, so documents never travel by mail and nothing is lost in transit. Clients across St. John's complete an entire filing without a single in-person meeting, though calls are always available.

Which tax deadlines apply to St. John's businesses?

Corporate T2 returns are due six months after your fiscal year-end, with any balance owing payable within two or three months depending on your CCPC status. Personal T1 returns are due April 30, and June 15 for the self-employed. GST/HST depends on your filing frequency.

Can you handle both my corporate and personal returns?

Yes, and doing both together is where most of the planning value sits. Salary-versus-dividend mix, shareholder loans and RRSP room interact across the two returns, and treating them separately is how owners overpay. Explore all our services.

What if my books are behind by several years?

That is routine work for us. We rebuild the ledger year by year, file the outstanding returns in sequence, and where eligible apply to the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties and interest.

Are you taking on new clients in St. John's?

Yes, we are actively taking on new corporate and personal clients in St. John's, including mid-season transfers from another accountant. Transferring is straightforward and we request the prior files on your behalf.

What industries do you serve in St. John's?

Construction, healthcare and medical practices, restaurants, e-commerce, real estate, transportation, professional services, technology startups and registered non-profits. Each carries a distinct deduction profile. See our industry specialisms.

How do I switch to your firm from my current accountant?

Tell us who currently holds your files and we handle the professional handover, including requesting working papers and prior-year returns. There is no gap in your compliance and no awkward conversation required on your side.

What is the deadline for filing corporate taxes in St. John's?

In St. John's, corporate tax returns (T2) are due within six months of the corporation's fiscal year-end. If you owe tax, the balance must be paid within 2 or 3 months of the year-end.

How much do tax accountants in St. John's charge?

Our personal tax filing services in St. John's start from $25, and corporate tax returns start from $90, offered under our 100% Risk-Free price match guarantee.

Does your accounting firm handle CRA audits for clients in St. John's?

Yes! We provide direct CRA audit defense and representation services for businesses and individuals throughout Newfoundland & Labrador and across Canada.

Do you have an office in St. John's?

We do not have a storefront in St. John's. Documents are exchanged on secure cloud software and everything is signed electronically, and the fee is the same in St. John's as anywhere else in Canada, with no location premium. Our head office is at 381 Front St W, Toronto, and you can reach the team on +1-416-619-0068.

Which sales-tax return does a St. John's business file?

Newfoundland and Labrador uses a single 15% HST administered by the CRA, filed on one combined return. We build every St. John's engagement around that fact.

How is an incorporated business taxed in Newfoundland and Labrador?

Newfoundland and Labrador applies a 2.5% small business rate (reduced from 3% in 2024), giving an 11.5% combined rate on the first $500,000. For a St. John's business, that is the ground floor of the filing.

Rent on your home is not deductible on a Canadian return. Two situations change that. Self-employed people, and employees who meet the work-space-in-the-home conditions, may claim the share of rent tied to the area used for work. Several provinces also run a property tax or rent based credit, applied for on the provincial schedule filed with your T1, where rent paid affects the amount. Keep receipts and your landlord's details either way.

CRA online filing for 2025 returns opened 23 February 2026 and closes 29 January 2027. Most people file between late February and the 30 April 2026 deadline, and that stretch is what tax season refers to. You can gather documents and prepare a return earlier, but it cannot be sent electronically before the system opens. Employment and investment slips such as T4 and T5 are issued by payers early in the year, and the CRA's Auto-fill service can pull the ones it already holds once you have set up My Account.

As the rules stand for the 2025 tax year filed in 2026, the late-filing penalty is 5% of the balance owing plus 1% of that balance for each full month the return is late, to a maximum of 12 months, so 17% at worst. It rises to 10% plus 2% per month for up to 20 months, a 50% maximum, but only where the CRA formally demanded the return and had already charged a late-filing penalty for any of the three preceding tax years. Interest compounds daily.

Taxable income is what is left after you total the income the tax rules include and subtract the deductions you are allowed. Employment and self-employment earnings, most pensions, EI and CPP benefits, interest, dividends, rental profit, the taxable portion of capital gains, RRSP and RRIF withdrawals and most taxable benefits from work all go into the total. Tax is then calculated on that figure and reduced by non-refundable credits such as the basic personal amount.

Canada uses a progressive system, so only the income falling inside a bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate. Moving into a higher bracket never raises the tax on the income below it. You face a federal set of brackets plus a provincial or territorial set, and both are indexed most years. Credits, starting with the basic personal amount, then reduce the calculated tax. Look up the brackets for the specific tax year before planning around them.

Interest on a student loan gives a non-refundable tax credit, not a deduction, and only the interest counts: repaying principal claims nothing. The loan has to come from a federal or provincial government student loan program, so interest on a line of credit, a bank loan or money borrowed from family does not qualify. Interest you cannot use because you owe no tax may be carried forward and claimed in a later year instead of being lost.

Non-taxable income is money you receive that never enters taxable income. Common examples are lottery and most gambling winnings, gifts and inheritances, growth and withdrawals inside a TFSA, the GST/HST credit and Canada child benefit, most life insurance death benefits, and child support under current-rule agreements. A few amounts are reported and then deducted, such as workers' compensation and social assistance, because they still affect benefit calculations, so report anything that arrives on a slip even when no tax results.

No - basic groceries are zero-rated, taxed at 0% in 2026, so bread, milk, vegetables and most unprepared food carry no GST/HST. Zero-rated is not the same as exempt: a grocer selling zero-rated food still claims input tax credits on rent, equipment and other costs, which a supplier of exempt goods cannot. Snack foods, restaurant meals and many prepared items fall outside basic groceries and are taxed at the full rate.

Box 14 is gross employment income, not net. It shows total pay before income tax, CPP and EI were withheld, and it already includes most taxable benefits and any tips the employer controlled and paid out. The amounts withheld sit in their own boxes further along the slip. Net income is something you calculate on the T1 after deductions such as RRSP contributions and union dues, so it will not match box 14.

Slips issued to you, including T5s, appear under tax information slips in CRA My Account once the issuer files them, usually by early March for the prior year. You can also pull them into most certified software with Auto-fill my return. A slip that has not been filed yet will not show, so report the income from your own records if you know the amount. Missing a slip does not excuse leaving the income off.

No GST or HST is charged on long-term residential rent: a lease of a home for a month or more is exempt, which is why your rent has no tax line. Short-term accommodation is different, since stays under a month can be taxable, and a landlord over the $30,000 small-supplier threshold must charge GST/HST on them. Some municipalities also add their own accommodation tax. Provincial sales tax does not apply to residential rent.

Property tax is billed by the municipality, normally as an interim bill early in the year and a final bill once the budget and rate are set. Most municipalities then offer several instalment dates or a monthly pre-authorised plan, and many mortgage lenders collect the tax with the mortgage payment and remit it on your behalf. The number of instalments and the due dates vary by municipality, so work from your own tax bill.
