T1 General

CRA Audit Bookkeeping Cleanup: Our Analysis

Late-filing penalties start at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, and repeat late filers can see those figures double — catching up through the Voluntary Disclosures Program can cut the penalty side substantially. The CRA requires business records to be kept for six years from the end of the last tax year they relate to. Our cra audit bookkeeping cleanup engagement is priced as a budget-friendly flat fee, so the cost is known before the work starts.

What We Notice Preparing CRA Audit Bookkeeping Cleanup Files

If you handle CRA Audit Bookkeeping Cleanup once a year, everything looks equally important. Handle it weekly, as a tax professional does, and a clear hierarchy emerges; these notes follow that hierarchy.

The starting point is not a strategy but a constraint: A review is won on documentation created at the time, not on explanations offered afterwards. The CRA asks for the source records behind a figure, and an unsupported claim is simply disallowed. Most reassessments we reverse are not the result of a wrong position — they are the result of a correct position with no contemporaneous paper trail behind it.

It would be simpler if the story ended there, but a second rule enters almost immediately. Once the CRA confirms an assessment or reassesses following an objection, the next step is an appeal to the Tax Court of Canada within 90 days. An extension has to be applied for rather than assumed, and the merits of the position do not extend the deadline. On the record-keeping side, one rule governs what must be kept and what must be shown: The normal reassessment period runs three years from the original notice of assessment for an individual or a CCPC and four years for other corporations. A waiver signed at an auditor’s request removes that limit for the issue it describes. It stays open until it is revoked.

You do not need to hold all of this in your head. You need someone who does — and an accounting firm handling cra audit bookkeeping cleanup week after week keeps these rules current so you do not have to. The smoothest files are the ones where the client arrives with these records already assembled.

You see the completed work before you pay for it — the quote is locked up front and nothing is filed until you approve it.

CRA Audit Bookkeeping Cleanup Tax & Accounting Case Studies

See how our expert CRA Audit Bookkeeping Cleanup tax and accounting services have helped Canadian businesses save money and stay compliant.

Case Study 1

$49,000 Credit Claim Filed And Accepted Without Adjustment — Employer Under Payroll Review, Toronto

A company facing a payroll trust examination in Toronto, Ontario had never tested its work against the eligibility rules. The resulting $49,000 claim was accepted without adjustment.

A company facing a payroll trust examination in Toronto, Ontario assumed the credits did not apply to a business its size. A net-worth assessment built on unexplained deposits that were actually loan proceeds meant they had applied all along. We identified the qualifying activity and built the documentation to support it. Then we filed the Tax Court appeal inside the window and resolved the remaining adjustments before a hearing date was needed. $49,000 recovered. Because the eligibility analysis is on file, the same claim can be repeated each year with a fraction of the effort.

Case Study 2

$61,000 Of Arbitrary Assessments Vacated After 5 Years — Corporation Under GST/HST Review, Calgary

The CRA had assessed a corporation under a GST/HST review in Calgary, Alberta on estimates across 5 unfiled years. Real filings vacated $61,000 of that tax.

5 years of unfiled returns had turned into notional assessments at a corporation under a GST/HST review in Calgary, Alberta. Underneath lay a director liability assessment for a corporation that had already stopped operating. Collections had already started. We kept the waiver narrowed to the issue actually under review and let the remaining years close on the normal reassessment period. We then filed every outstanding year in chronological order so the CRA could vacate the notional assessments cleanly. All 5 years were accepted as filed. $61,000 of arbitrarily assessed tax was vacated, collections action stopped, and the account is current for the first time in 5 years.

Case Study 3

Desk-Review Assessment Of $130,000 Vacated — Restaurant Under Net-Worth Audit, Vancouver

A desk review assessed a restaurant under a net-worth audit in Vancouver, British Columbia $130,000. The dispute was over a proposal letter with a 30-day response window and no supporting records assembled. Producing the records vacated the assessment.

A restaurant under a net-worth audit in Vancouver, British Columbia was carrying $130,000 of penalties and interest. The charges arose from a proposal letter with a 30-day response window and no supporting records assembled. Much of that amount accumulated during a period the CRA itself had delayed. We answered each query in writing with an indexed document package, so the file showed exactly what the auditor had received and on what date. We framed the relief application on the specific grounds the CRA guidelines recognise rather than on general hardship. The assessment was vacated. $130,000 came off the account, and the documentation now on file makes the same position straightforward to defend next time.

Case Study 4

Books Rebuilt From Source, $6,300 In Unclaimed Input Tax Found — Voluntary Disclosure Applicant, Mississauga

The ledger at a business owner considering a voluntary disclosure in Mississauga, Ontario could not support its own filings. The reason was a waiver signed at the counter that kept an otherwise closed year open with no end date. Rebuilding it surfaced $6,300 in unclaimed input tax.

A business owner considering a voluntary disclosure in Mississauga, Ontario could not answer basic questions about its own numbers. A waiver signed at the counter that kept an otherwise closed year open with no end date sat between the bank statements and the ledger. We filed the disclosure through the Voluntary Disclosures Program before contact, which removed the gross-negligence penalty entirely. We then documented the process so the work does not depend on any one person remembering how it was done. Records rebuilt and reconciled, $6,300 recovered in input tax credits that the old file could not support, and a documented monthly process now in place.

Case Study 5

$63,000 Cut From The Annual Tax Bill — Family Business Under Review, Edmonton

A family business under a related-party review in Edmonton, Alberta was filing correctly and still overpaying. The reason was a net-worth assessment built on unexplained deposits that were actually loan proceeds. Restructuring the position cut $63,000 from the annual bill.

A family business under a related-party review in Edmonton, Alberta was compliant but paying more than it needed to. The prior year had been filed correctly. It still left a net-worth assessment built on unexplained deposits that were actually loan proceeds on the table. We modelled the current position against the alternatives before changing anything. Then we traced each unexplained deposit to its source — loans, transfers between accounts, an insurance settlement — and reduced the net-worth assessment accordingly. The change saved $63,000 in the first year and repeats annually. Nothing about the filings became more aggressive. The position is simply the one the rules already allowed.

Case Study 6

$22,000 Reassessment Reduced To Nil On Review — Professional Under Lifestyle Audit, Ottawa

A $22,000 reassessment was proposed against a professional under a lifestyle audit in Ottawa, Ontario. It followed a confirmation letter left in a drawer until the appeal window had closed. The documented response reduced it to nil.

A review notice arrived at a professional under a lifestyle audit in Ottawa, Ontario, covering CRA audit bookkeeping cleanup for two tax years. The auditor's working position was an adjustment of $22,000. It was driven by a confirmation letter left in a drawer until the appeal window had closed. Rather than negotiate, we rebuilt the record. We brought every outstanding return current, then negotiated a payment arrangement that stopped the collections action. We then submitted a point-by-point response that answered each proposed adjustment with the document behind it. The auditor accepted the documented position and closed the review without adjustment, protecting $22,000 and leaving the prior filings undisturbed.

CRA Audit Bookkeeping Cleanup Questions We Hear Most Often

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does CRA Audit Bookkeeping Cleanup cost in Canada?

CRA Audit Bookkeeping Cleanup starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for CRA Audit Bookkeeping Cleanup?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does CRA Audit Bookkeeping Cleanup take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We serve clients in every province and territory at the same fixed fees, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for CRA Audit Bookkeeping Cleanup?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes CRA Audit Bookkeeping Cleanup different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in CRA Audit Bookkeeping Cleanup services?

Our cra audit bookkeeping cleanup services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with CRA Audit Bookkeeping Cleanup services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

What goes wrong most often when owners handle cra audit bookkeeping cleanup themselves?

Let us give you the substance first and the caveats second. The Voluntary Disclosures Program can waive gross-negligence penalties and part of the interest. That relief is available only while the CRA has not yet contacted the taxpayer about the issue. The caveat is simply that facts on your file can shift the outcome, so treat this as the baseline rather than the final word.

What will you need from me to get cra audit bookkeeping cleanup started?

A tax consultant answers this differently than a search engine, because the rule has edges. A review is won on documentation created at the time, not explanations offered afterwards. An unsupported claim is simply disallowed, however correct it was. Where your business sits relative to those edges is what we establish in the first meeting.

What Canadians Search About CRA Audit Bookkeeping Cleanup

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

Paper returns go to the CRA tax centre that serves your province or territory of residence, not to one national address. The correct address is printed in the paper return package and listed on canada.ca under mailing addresses for individual returns, and it differs for non-residents and for business returns. Filing electronically is much faster: for the 2025 tax year the CRA aims to issue a refund on an online return in about two weeks, against a considerably longer standard on paper.

The route depends on the structure. A sole proprietor or partner reports business income on Form T2125 and files it with the personal T1 return; for the 2025 year the self-employed filing deadline was 15 June 2026, while any balance owing was due 30 April 2026. An incorporated business files a separate T2 corporate return for each fiscal year, due six months after that year end, on top of whatever the owner reports personally.

The CRA no longer runs walk-in counters for general tax help, so there is no office you can visit to file or ask questions. Contact is by phone, by mail, or through My Account and My Business Account; in-person help is limited to arranged appointments in specific programs. Mailing addresses differ by centre and by what you are sending, so use the address printed on your CRA letter or on the CRA's website.

It is the line on the T1 where you pay back part of your Employment Insurance benefits or Old Age Security pension because your income for the year was above the threshold set for that year. The return works the amount out from your slips and your net income, then adds it to what you owe. For Old Age Security, the CRA normally recovers it through reduced monthly payments over the following year. Check the CRA's threshold for the year you are filing.

A return filed online is usually assessed and refunded in about two weeks, as long as your direct deposit details and address are current in CRA My Account and the return is not selected for review. A non-resident return can take up to sixteen weeks. Amounts you owe the CRA or another government program are applied against the refund first. My Account shows the assessment and the refund once issued, which is the quickest way to check.

Most account questions are answered faster in My Account or My Business Account, where balances, notices, slips, benefit payments and instalment records are all visible without waiting on hold. For anything the portal will not show, call the individual or business enquiries line published on canada.ca, and have your social insurance or business number, a figure from a recent return and your address ready for the identity checks. An authorised representative can be added with the AUT-01.

The CRA does not usually move a due date, but you can ask for a payment arrangement that spreads the balance over time. Interest keeps running while you pay. Apply through My Account, My Business Account, or the CRA's debt management call centre. Where interest or penalties arose from circumstances beyond your control, ask for relief using form RC4288. British Columbia's property tax deferment program is a separate provincial scheme with its own application.

Taxpayer information is anything the CRA holds that came from or was prepared about your tax affairs: returns, slips, assessments, balances and correspondence. The Income Tax Act binds the CRA to keep it confidential, so it cannot be released to a spouse, an accountant or a lender without your authorisation. You give that authorisation through My Account or a signed AUT-01. Sharing between the CRA and other government programs happens only where the law allows it.

Start with the CRA's own learning material: its Learn about your taxes course walks a first-time filer through income, deductions, credits and filing, and the T1 guide explains each line of the return. Then read the CRA pages for your own situation, such as employment expenses or self-employment, plus your province's credits. Working through last year's return with the guide open teaches more than any summary. Ask for help before a deadline, not after.

Rental income is taxed on a net basis, so the costs of earning it come off first: mortgage interest (not principal), property tax, insurance, utilities you pay, repairs, condo fees, advertising, and property management. Capital cost allowance on the building is optional and can reduce income further, though it is recaptured on sale. A genuine rental loss can offset other income. When you sell, only one-half of a capital gain is taxable for 2025 and 2026.

You cannot write off the income itself, but you deduct the costs of earning it. Common current expenses are mortgage interest (not principal), property tax, insurance, utilities you pay, condo fees, advertising, property management, and repairs that maintain the property. Improvements that better the property are capital and depreciated instead. Only the rented portion counts where you also live there. Keep invoices for six years from the end of the tax year they relate to.

Yes. Every monthly lease payment on a vehicle in Ontario carries 13% HST, and so do the down payment, administration and acquisition fees, excess-kilometre charges and the buyout if you purchase at the end of the term. A registered business can generally claim an input tax credit on the tax in each payment, reduced for personal use and subject to the cost limits for passenger vehicles. Keep the lease agreement and the monthly statements.
