The Language of Customer Collection Support, Explained

T1 General
The personal income tax return individuals file with the CRA each year.
T2 Corporate Return
The corporate income tax return every incorporated Canadian business must file.
GST/HST Return
The sales-tax return businesses file to remit GST/HST collected, net of input tax credits.
Customer Collection Support: Our Analysis

Clean, reconciled books are what turn a T2 filing into a review rather than a scramble — and what stands up when the CRA asks for support. Our customer collection support engagement is priced as a low-cost flat fee, so the cost is known before the work starts.

Field Notes: Customer Collection Support

Most write-ups of customer collection support describe the form. These notes describe the file — what a tax consultant checks first and why.

One rule does most of the work here. Accrued but unbilled revenue belongs in income in the year the work was performed. Deferring it to the invoice date understates taxable income and is a standard reassessment adjustment.

Once that is settled, the next question answers itself less often than clients expect. Shareholder loan balances must be repaid within one year of the corporation’s following year-end or the amount is included in the shareholder’s personal income under subsection 15(2). The final point is less about opportunity and more about what happens when a file is challenged: Related-party transactions have to be recorded at fair market value, and a below-market charge between connected companies invites an adjustment on both sides of the transaction.

None of this is exotic — but each point has to be applied to your facts, which is exactly what you are paying a tax filing specialist to do. A productive customer collection support engagement starts with paperwork, and the list below covers what to gather.

You will see the finished work before it goes anywhere — review-before-filing is standard here, not an add-on. The fee is fixed up front, and nothing is payable until the service is done.

Customer Collection Support Tax & Accounting Case Studies

See how our expert Customer Collection Support tax and accounting services have helped Canadian businesses save money and stay compliant.

Case Study 1

Scaled To 82 Staff With $15,500 Of Working Capital Freed — Fitness Studio Group, Kitchener

Growth at a boutique fitness studio group in Kitchener, Ontario had outrun the back office, and capital assets written off in full in the year of purchase, with no fixed-asset schedule behind the deduction broke first. Headcount reached 82 with $15,500 of cash freed.

Case Study 2

Corporate Structure Rebuilt For $72,000 Of Annual Savings — Independent Pharmacy, Calgary

The structure at an independent pharmacy in Calgary, Alberta no longer fitted the business, and a shareholder loan account that had drifted for three years with no supporting entries showed it. Rebuilding it saves $72,000 a year.

Case Study 3

$50,000 Saved By Correcting What Prior Filings Had Missed — Family Wholesale Distributor, London

A second opinion for a family-owned wholesale distributor in London, Ontario found a bank that refused to renew an operating line without compliant statements in prior filings and recovered $50,000 a year.

Case Study 4

Collections Halted And $61,000 Cut From A 7-Year Backlog — Quarterly-Close Practice, Kelowna

Collections had begun against a professional practice that closes its books quarterly in Kelowna, British Columbia over 7 years of unfiled returns. Bringing them current cut $61,000 from the balance.

Case Study 5

$155,000 Of Working Capital Freed From The Tax Cycle — Machine-Shop Owner-Operator, Hamilton

A machine-shop owner-operator in Hamilton, Ontario was profitable and permanently short of cash, with work in progress carried at billing value one year and at cost the next, so neither year was comparable behind the gap. Restructuring the tax cycle freed $155,000.

Case Study 6

Intergenerational Transfer Completed With $845,000 Deferred — Regional Courier Operator, Victoria

A family transfer at a regional courier operator in Victoria, British Columbia would have been fully taxable because of no valuation on file to support the price the parties had agreed. Restructuring deferred $845,000.

Questions Owners Ask About Customer Collection Support

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does Customer Collection Support cost in Canada?

Customer Collection Support starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for Customer Collection Support?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does Customer Collection Support take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We are a cloud-based practice serving every province and territory, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for Customer Collection Support?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes Customer Collection Support different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in Customer Collection Support services?

Our customer collection support services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with Customer Collection Support services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

Is customer collection support something I can catch up on if I have fallen behind?

A tax advisor answers this differently than a search engine, because the rule has edges. A fiscal year-end cannot be changed by simply closing the books on a new date; subsection 249.1(7) requires the CRA’s concurrence. The short transitional period is a tax year in its own right and needs its own return and its own statements. Where your business sits relative to those edges is what we establish in the first meeting.

How is your approach to customer collection support different from doing it through software?

There is a widespread assumption here, and the actual position is worth stating plainly. The CRA requires business records to be kept for six years from the end of the tax year they relate to, in a form that allows the return to be verified. Where records cannot support the return, the CRA is entitled to assess on its own estimate — and the burden of disproving that estimate falls on the taxpayer. If your current setup was built on the assumption instead of the rule, that is fixable — but sooner is better than later.

More Customer Collection Support Questions Canadians Ask

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

Canadian income tax is built up in layers. You total your income for the year, subtract the deductions you qualify for to arrive at taxable income, then apply the federal brackets and your province's brackets to that figure. Each bracket rate applies only to the income sitting inside it, so earning more never retaxes the dollars below. Non-refundable credits, starting with the basic personal amount, come off the tax afterwards. Look up the CRA bracket table for the tax year you are filing.

A tax return is the annual filing that reports your income, deductions and credits to the CRA so the final tax for the year can be settled. Payers withhold tax during the year and the return reconciles that against what you actually owe, producing either a refund or a balance to pay. For 2025 returns filed in 2026, refunds usually arrive in about two weeks for an online return, while a paper return runs on a considerably longer standard because it is handled manually.

For the 2025 tax year, most people had to file and pay by 30 April 2026. If you or your spouse were self-employed, the filing deadline moved to 15 June 2026, but any balance owing was still due 30 April 2026. Corporations work on their own fiscal year: the T2 is due six months after year end, with the balance due two months after year end, or three months for an eligible CCPC claiming the small business deduction.

Most of your options are claims made on the return rather than expenses. Contribute to an RRSP to cut taxable income, use a TFSA for tax-free growth, and open an FHSA if you are saving for a first home. Claim tuition, eligible medical expenses, childcare, donations, and union or professional dues where they apply. Employment expenses are deductible only when your employer certifies them. You can also ask the CRA to reduce the tax withheld from your pay.

A refund is paid as one amount for the return it relates to, not in instalments. With direct deposit it usually arrives about two weeks after an online return is filed. The CRA can reduce or hold it to cover tax you owe for another year, or a debt it collects for another government program. If you file several years at once, each return produces its own separate refund.

Yes. There is one combined GST/HST return, so HST you paid on business purchases is claimed as an input tax credit on the same return where you report the GST and HST you collected. The rate charged does not matter: GST 5%, Ontario HST 13%, Nova Scotia 14% from 1 April 2025, and 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island are all recoverable if the purchase relates to commercial activity. Keep invoices showing the tax and the supplier's registration number.

Tax law is the body of statutes, regulations and court decisions that set who pays tax, on what, and when. In Canada the main pieces are the federal Income Tax Act and the Excise Tax Act, which covers GST/HST, plus each province's own tax statutes. The CRA administers these rules and publishes guides, folios and interpretations explaining its view, while the Tax Court and higher courts settle disputes over what the wording means.

Most issuers no longer mail T5 information returns. The CRA expects them to be filed electronically through its internet filing service, and electronic filing is required once you are over the CRA's slip-count threshold. If you are still filing on paper, send the summary and slips to the information returns processing address shown on the CRA's T5 page, since the destination centre changes from time to time. Keep a copy for six years.

You stay responsible. The CRA assesses penalties and interest against the taxpayer, not the preparer. File as soon as possible to stop the penalty growing, then ask the CRA to cancel or waive the penalties and interest with a taxpayer relief request on form RC4288, explaining what happened. Relief is discretionary and is refused more often where the taxpayer never followed up on the missed deadline. Recovering anything from the preparer is a separate matter between you and them.

Line 23600 is not on the T4. It is a line on the T1 income tax return, where it reports net income after deductions. The T4 gives you employment income in box 14 along with the amounts withheld, and those figures feed into the return that produces line 23600. When a lender, a benefit application or a sponsorship form asks for line 23600, take it from your filed return or your notice of assessment in CRA My Account.

Yes. Rent you receive for a room in your own home is taxable income, reported gross with the related expenses deducted. You can claim only the share tied to the rented space, usually split by floor area or number of rooms, plus that share of shared costs such as heat, insurance and property tax. Renting to a relative below cost means you report the income but no loss. Keep receipts and a written note of how you split the space.

No. A tip is payment for service, not a gift, so it is taxable even when it is voluntary, paid in cash, and recorded by nobody. Genuine personal gifts from family or friends are not taxable in Canada, but money a customer leaves because of work you performed does not qualify. Report tips with your employment or self-employment income; if you were paid in cash, your own daily log is the record.
