Personal Tax Audit Support: Our Analysis

CRA reviews are won on documentation: every figure filed should trace to a source document, and deadlines — 90 days for an objection — are unforgiving. A notice of objection is generally due 90 days from the notice of assessment, and individuals have a further year to apply for an extension. We quote personal tax audit support as one economical fixed price — the budget-friendly alternative to hourly billing.

From the Desk of Your Tax Filing Specialist

A few notes from the files we actually work on, because personal tax audit support is decided by details that never make it into a brochure.

First, the rule that sorts straightforward files from complicated ones: Capital losses can be carried back three years against capital gains already reported, which turns a bad year into a refund rather than a carry-forward.

There is a companion rule that changes how the first one plays out in practice: Charitable donations can be carried forward for up to five years and claimed by either spouse. The credit rate steps up above the first $200 of total gifts in a year. Small receipts claimed one year at a time sit in the low tier every time. One more, because it surfaces in reviews constantly: A disposition of a principal residence has to be reported and the designation made, even where the entire gain is exempt. The exemption is not lost by silence, but a late designation carries its own penalty. The CRA now has the sale data from other sources.

The common thread in these rules is that they punish assumptions and reward verification. Engaging a tax filing specialist for personal tax audit support is, at bottom, a way of replacing assumptions with checked answers. To move quickly, have your ledger exports, bank statements and prior filings ready when we start.

The fee is fixed and agreed before any work starts, you review every figure, and payment happens only after the work is done.

Personal Tax Audit Support Tax & Accounting Case Studies

See how our expert Personal Tax Audit Support tax and accounting services have helped Canadian businesses save money and stay compliant.

Case Study 1

Scaled To 43 Staff With $25,000 Of Working Capital Freed — Commissioned Salesperson, Burnaby

Growth at a commissioned salesperson in Burnaby, British Columbia had outrun the back office. A rental property reported without any capital cost allowance analysis broke first. Headcount reached 43 with $25,000 of cash freed.

A commissioned salesperson in Burnaby, British Columbia was growing fast, with headcount reaching 43 in eighteen months. The back office had not kept up. A rental property reported without any capital cost allowance analysis was the first thing to break. We carried the capital loss back against gains reported in the prior three years and generated a refund rather than a carry-forward balance. We built the compliance calendar for the size the business was becoming rather than the size it had been. The business reached 43 staff with no missed remittance and no late filing. $25,000 of working capital was freed in the process.

Case Study 2

Remittance Schedule Corrected, $25,000 Refunded — First-Year Physician, Red Deer

Remittances at a physician in their first year of practice in Red Deer, Alberta were chronically late. It came down to RRSP room accumulated over eight years and never used in a high-income year. Fixing the schedule refunded $25,000.

Remittances at a physician in their first year of practice in Red Deer, Alberta were consistently late by a few days. That was enough to trigger penalties every quarter. Behind it sat RRSP room accumulated over eight years and never used in a high-income year. We pooled the carried-forward donation receipts onto the higher-income spouse’s return so the whole claim sat above the low-rate first tier. Then we moved the remittance dates into a scheduled process rather than a monthly decision. Penalties stopped from the following remittance onwards, and $25,000 of overpaid instalments was refunded.

Case Study 3

$120,000 Of Arbitrary Assessments Vacated After 4 Years — Self-Employed Consultant, Barrie

The CRA had assessed a self-employed consultant in Barrie, Ontario on estimates across 4 unfiled years. Real filings vacated $120,000 of that tax.

4 years of unfiled returns had turned into notional assessments at a self-employed consultant in Barrie, Ontario. Underneath lay foreign accounts that had crossed the T1135 threshold two years earlier. Collections had already started. We pulled the full slip history from the CRA record, refiled the affected years by adjustment request, and recovered the credits that had been missed. We then filed every outstanding year in chronological order so the CRA could vacate the notional assessments cleanly. All 4 years were accepted as filed. $120,000 of arbitrarily assessed tax was vacated, collections action stopped, and the account is current for the first time in 4 years.

Case Study 4

$21,000 Saved By Correcting What Prior Filings Had Missed — Employee with Foreign Accounts, Toronto

A second opinion for an employee with foreign investment accounts in Toronto, Ontario recovered $21,000 a year. It found a home sale never reported on the basis that the gain was exempt anyway in prior filings.

An employee with foreign investment accounts in Toronto, Ontario asked for a second opinion on personal tax audit support. That followed three years of rising tax. The review found a home sale never reported on the basis that the gain was exempt anyway. We built the comparison first: current structure against two alternatives. Then we filed the outstanding T1135 disclosures under the voluntary disclosure route before the CRA raised them. First-year saving of $21,000, with the same benefit recurring. Every position taken is documented and supported in the file.

Case Study 5

Holding Structure Added, $25,500 Saved Annually — Pension-Splitting Retiree, Edmonton

A retiree splitting eligible pension income with a spouse in Edmonton, Alberta needed a holding structure. It had to deal with years of small donation receipts claimed one at a time instead of pooled onto a single return. The reorganisation was tax-neutral and removed $25,500 of annual exposure.

The structure at a retiree splitting eligible pension income with a spouse in Edmonton, Alberta needed fixing. The file was carrying years of small donation receipts claimed one at a time instead of pooled onto a single return. Every option for fixing it ran through a reorganisation that had to be done without triggering tax. We worked with the client's lawyer. Together, we obtained the signed T2200 and rebuilt the employment-expense claim on the prescribed form with the supporting records attached to the file. We also prepared the elections, resolutions and valuations the structure needed to stand up. The structure now matches the business. Annual saving of $25,500, and the reorganisation itself was tax-neutral.

Case Study 6

$51,000 Of Penalties And Interest Cancelled On Relief — Multi-Source Retiree, Surrey

A retiree drawing from three sources in Surrey, British Columbia was carrying $51,000 of penalties and interest. The charges arose from employment expenses claimed with no signed T2200 from the employer to support them. A relief application cancelled that amount.

An assessment of $51,000 landed at a retiree drawing from three sources in Surrey, British Columbia following a desk review. It turned on employment expenses claimed with no signed T2200 from the employer to support them. The auditor had not seen the records behind it. We reset the medical expense claim window, transferred credits between spouses, and applied the tuition and disability amounts to the return that used them. We then set out the legislative basis for the position alongside the documents supporting it. $51,000 of penalties and interest was cancelled under the taxpayer relief provisions, and the underlying assessment was adjusted to match the filed position.

Personal Tax Audit Support Frequently Asked Questions

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does Personal Tax Audit Support cost in Canada?

Personal Tax Audit Support starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for Personal Tax Audit Support?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does Personal Tax Audit Support take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We serve clients in every province and territory at the same fixed fees, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for Personal Tax Audit Support?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes Personal Tax Audit Support different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in Personal Tax Audit Support services?

Our personal tax audit support services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with Personal Tax Audit Support services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

Is personal tax audit support something I can catch up on if I have fallen behind?

Let us give you the substance first and the caveats second. Moving expenses are deductible where the new home is at least 40 kilometres closer to the new work location. The deduction is limited to income earned at the new location. The caveat is simply that facts on your file can shift the outcome, so treat this as the baseline rather than the final word.

How is your approach to personal tax audit support different from doing it through software?

A tax services provider answers this differently than a search engine, because the rule has edges. Capital losses can be carried back three years against capital gains already reported, which turns a bad year into a refund rather than a carry-forward. Where your business sits relative to those edges is what we establish in the first meeting.

Rent on your home is not deductible on a Canadian return. Two situations change that. Self-employed people, and employees who meet the work-space-in-the-home conditions, may claim the share of rent tied to the area used for work. Several provinces also run a property tax or rent based credit, applied for on the provincial schedule filed with your T1, where rent paid affects the amount. Keep receipts and your landlord's details either way.

If you owe nothing, no penalty applies, but a refund and benefit payments such as the Canada child benefit and the GST/HST credit are held up until the return is processed. If you owe, a late-filing penalty is charged and interest runs on the balance and compounds daily from the day after the due date. For the 2025 tax year the deadline was 30 April 2026. File even if you cannot pay, because the penalty is driven by filing, not payment.

The basic personal amount is a non-refundable credit that shelters a base level of income from federal tax, so income below it carries no federal tax. The amount is indexed every year, and the enhanced portion is phased out across the second-highest federal bracket, so taxpayers in the top bracket receive only the base amount. Each province and territory sets its own version. On Form TD1 you claim it so your employer withholds less; claim it with one employer only, or too little tax is withheld.

Ontario charges its own graduated personal rates, plus a surtax and the Ontario Health Premium, on top of federal tax, so the combined marginal rate climbs with income. For corporations in 2026 the Ontario small business rate is 3.2%, falling to 2.2% effective 1 July 2026, which gives a combined federal and provincial small business rate of 12.2% falling to 11.2%; a 31 December 2026 year end blends to roughly 11.7%. The Ontario combined general rate for 2026 is 26.5%.

A return filed online is usually assessed within about two weeks, and the notice of assessment appears in My Account as soon as that happens. Some returns are held for a review of slips, receipts or credits, which adds time without meaning anything is wrong. A non-resident return can take up to sixteen weeks. Register for My Account and email notifications so you see the notice the day it issues.

Payments for hosting a student are taxable where they exceed what you spend on that student's room, meals and utilities and the arrangement is run for profit. Where the fee only covers your costs, the CRA generally treats it as cost recovery with nothing to report and nothing to deduct. Keep a record of the fee and of what you spent, because the answer turns on those figures rather than on the label homestay.

The simplest route is your bank’s online bill payment, choosing the CRA payee that matches the tax type and year. The CRA’s My Payment service takes Interac Online and Visa Debit, and you can set up a pre-authorized debit inside My Account. Third-party card processors work but charge a fee. Select the correct account and period so the money is not applied elsewhere, and pay by the deadline, since interest runs from the day after.

No. You can file a late return at any time, and you should. For the 2025 tax year the deadline was 30 April 2026, so a return filed now is late: interest runs on any unpaid balance and the penalty is 5% of the balance owing plus 1% for each full month the return is outstanding, to twelve months. If you are owed a refund there is no penalty. Online filing for 2025 stays open until 29 January 2027.

Manitoba charges 7% retail sales tax (RST) on most goods and many services, and the federal GST of 5% applies as well, so a Manitoba buyer usually pays 12% in total (2026). RST is administered by the province rather than the CRA, so registration and RST returns go through Manitoba Finance while your GST/HST return goes to the CRA. Manitoba also sets its own personal and corporate income tax rates.

Only if you are authorised first. The CRA will not discuss an account with anyone who is not on file as a representative, even a spouse or adult child. The taxpayer can add you online through My Account, or you can submit an AUT-01 with their signature. For someone who cannot sign, the CRA needs legal documents such as a power of attorney or estate paperwork. Authorisation can be limited to view-only access.

A true operating lease is deducted as a current expense over the period it covers. An arrangement that is really a financed purchase is capitalised instead, and you claim capital cost allowance on the asset plus the interest portion of the payments. Passenger vehicle and some equipment leases face separate deduction limits. Accounting standards may put a lease on the balance sheet even where tax still treats it as rent, so the two figures differ. Check the CRA's business expense guidance.

A balance owing is the tax the CRA assessed for the year less what you already paid through withholding and instalments; a credit balance is a refund. Assessed tax owing is that unpaid amount, and compound daily interest runs on it from the payment deadline until it clears. Check the figures against your own return, since a reassessment may have changed a claim. You can pay online, ask for a payment arrangement, or file a T1-ADJ if the assessment is wrong.
