CRA Appeals Assistance: Our Analysis

CRA reviews are won on documentation: every figure filed should trace to a source document, and deadlines — 90 days for an objection — are unforgiving. A notice of objection is generally due 90 days from the notice of assessment, and individuals have a further year to apply for an extension. Because the fee is fixed and economical, the economics stay predictable whether your file is simple or messy.

CRA Appeals Assistance: Notes From Our Practice

Good cra appeals assistance work is mostly about sequencing: which questions to settle before which. These notes lay out the sequence an income tax specialist follows on CRA Appeals Assistance engagements.

Before anything else, one rule sets the frame. The normal reassessment period runs three years from the original notice of assessment for an individual or a CCPC and four years for other corporations. A waiver signed at an auditor’s request removes that limit for the issue it describes. It stays open until it is revoked.

Layer a second constraint on top and the picture sharpens: Once the CRA confirms an assessment or reassesses following an objection, the next step is an appeal to the Tax Court of Canada within 90 days. An extension has to be applied for rather than assumed, and the merits of the position do not extend the deadline. Ask what a reviewer will want to see, and the answer sits in this rule: A review is won on documentation created at the time, not on explanations offered afterwards. The CRA asks for the source records behind a figure, and an unsupported claim is simply disallowed. Most reassessments we reverse are not the result of a wrong position — they are the result of a correct position with no contemporaneous paper trail behind it.

Taken together, these rules explain why cra appeals assistance can rarely be treated as a do-it-once-and-forget exercise. An income tax specialist watches how they interact across your specific facts, which is something no checklist can do. A productive cra appeals assistance engagement starts with paperwork, and the list below covers what to gather.

The last note is about how we work rather than the rules: every engagement comes with a fixed fee agreed up front, a review with you before filing, and payment after — not before — the service.

CRA Appeals Assistance Tax & Accounting Case Studies

See how our expert CRA Appeals Assistance tax and accounting services have helped Canadian businesses save money and stay compliant.

Case Study 1

Collections Halted And $138,000 Cut From A 3-Year Backlog — Late-Objection Taxpayer, Barrie

Collections had begun against a taxpayer whose objection window has closed in Barrie, Ontario over 3 years of unfiled returns. Bringing them current cut $138,000 from the balance.

By the time a taxpayer whose objection window has closed in Barrie, Ontario called, 3 years were outstanding. The CRA had assessed on estimates. Underneath it sat a net-worth assessment built on unexplained deposits that were actually loan proceeds. We reconstructed the records year by year. We traced each unexplained deposit to its source — loans, transfers between accounts, an insurance settlement — and reduced the net-worth assessment accordingly. Each filing replaced an arbitrary assessment with a real one. The account is current. Filing on real numbers rather than CRA estimates reduced the balance by $138,000, and a relief application addressed part of the accumulated interest.

Case Study 2

Corporate Structure Rebuilt For $23,000 Of Annual Savings — Employer Under Payroll Review, Victoria

The structure at a company facing a payroll trust examination in Victoria, British Columbia no longer fitted the business. An objection deadline that had passed with no extension applied for showed it. Rebuilding it saves $23,000 a year.

The structure at a company facing a payroll trust examination in Victoria, British Columbia dated from years earlier. It had been set up for a business that no longer existed. An objection deadline that had passed with no extension applied for had become expensive. We filed the Tax Court appeal inside the window and resolved the remaining adjustments before a hearing date was needed. The reorganisation used the rollover provisions rather than a taxable transfer, so no tax fell due on the restructuring itself. $23,000 of annual saving, achieved on a tax-deferred basis. The minute book, elections and valuations are all in the file.

Case Study 3

Desk-Review Assessment Of $83,000 Vacated — Long-Term Non-Filer, Regina

A desk review assessed a taxpayer with eight years of unfiled returns in Regina, Saskatchewan $83,000. The dispute was over an audit conducted over the phone, with nothing on file showing what had been provided or when. Producing the records vacated the assessment.

A taxpayer with eight years of unfiled returns in Regina, Saskatchewan was carrying $83,000 of penalties and interest. The charges arose from an audit conducted over the phone, with nothing on file showing what had been provided or when. Much of that amount accumulated during a period the CRA itself had delayed. We filed the disclosure through the Voluntary Disclosures Program before contact, which removed the gross-negligence penalty entirely. We framed the relief application on the specific grounds the CRA guidelines recognise rather than on general hardship. The assessment was vacated. $83,000 came off the account, and the documentation now on file makes the same position straightforward to defend next time.

Case Study 4

$100,000 Late-Filing Penalty Cancelled On Relief Application — Assessed Shareholder, London

A shareholder assessed on a taxable benefit in London, Ontario had already been penalised. The issue was a proposal letter with a 30-day response window and no supporting records assembled. A relief application cancelled $100,000 of that penalty.

A shareholder assessed on a taxable benefit in London, Ontario had already missed one deadline and was about to miss a second. Behind it sat a proposal letter with a 30-day response window and no supporting records assembled. A penalty of $100,000 was accruing. We split the work into what had to happen before the deadline and what could follow it. Then we requested the auditor’s working papers and report to see how the assessment had been built before answering any of it. The outstanding return was accepted as filed, and the taxpayer relief application cancelled $100,000 of the penalty already assessed on the earlier year.

Case Study 5

Month-End Close Cut From 9 Weeks To 6 Days — Family Business Under Review, Surrey

Closing the books at a family business under a related-party review in Surrey, British Columbia took 9 weeks. The cause was a director liability assessment for a corporation that had already stopped operating. It now takes 6 days.

The accounting file at a family business under a related-party review in Surrey, British Columbia had a weak foundation. It was built on a director liability assessment for a corporation that had already stopped operating. The year-end had taken 9 weeks each of the last three years. We answered each query in writing with an indexed document package, so the file showed exactly what the auditor had received and on what date. We also moved the reconciliations into the monthly cycle, so the year-end stopped being a rebuild. The file reconciles. Month-end closes in 6 days instead of 9 weeks, and the year-end is a review rather than a reconstruction.

Case Study 6

Instalments Rebased, $117,000 Of Cash Returned To The Business — Director Facing Assessment, Ottawa

A business owner with a director liability assessment in Ottawa, Ontario was overpaying instalments. The cause was a waiver signed at the counter that kept an otherwise closed year open with no end date. Rebasing them returned $117,000 to the business.

A business owner with a director liability assessment in Ottawa, Ontario was paying instalments calculated on a prior year. That year no longer reflected the business. A waiver signed at the counter that kept an otherwise closed year open with no end date was tying up $117,000 of cash. We rebased the instalments on the current-year estimate rather than the prior-year default. Alongside that, we assembled the contemporaneous records, filed a structured response to each proposed adjustment with the supporting documents indexed, and had the proposal withdrawn. $117,000 of cash stayed in the business, the penalty cycle ended, and the instalment position is reviewed each quarter against actual results.

Common Questions About CRA Appeals Assistance

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does CRA Appeals Assistance cost in Canada?

CRA Appeals Assistance starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for CRA Appeals Assistance?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does CRA Appeals Assistance take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We serve clients in every province and territory at the same fixed fees, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for CRA Appeals Assistance?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes CRA Appeals Assistance different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in CRA Appeals Assistance services?

Our cra appeals assistance services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with CRA Appeals Assistance services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

How is your approach to cra appeals assistance different from doing it through software?

In our files, this is the deciding factor: A review is won on documentation created at the time, not on explanations offered afterwards. The CRA asks for the source records behind a figure, and an unsupported claim is simply disallowed. Most reassessments we reverse are not the result of a wrong position — they are the result of a correct position with no contemporaneous paper trail behind it. A tax services provider applies it to your numbers before submission.

What records should I gather before starting cra appeals assistance?

The short answer comes straight from our working notes: The VDP can waive gross-negligence penalties and part of the interest on unreported income or unfiled returns — but only while the disclosure is genuinely voluntary. The window closes the moment the CRA makes contact about the issue. Acting before that letter arrives is worth real money. How that plays out on your file depends on the specifics, which is exactly what the engagement is for.

Commonly Searched CRA Appeals Assistance Questions

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

Sign in to CRA My Account, or use the CRA's mobile app, where the return shows as received, in process or assessed, and the refund amount and payment date appear once it has been assessed. The CRA also runs an automated telephone service giving the same information. A representative you have authorised through Represent a Client can check it for you. If the status has not moved past the published processing time, the return is probably under review.

If you owe nothing, no penalty applies, but a refund and benefit payments such as the Canada child benefit and the GST/HST credit are held up until the return is processed. If you owe, a late-filing penalty is charged and interest runs on the balance and compounds daily from the day after the due date. For the 2025 tax year the deadline was 30 April 2026. File even if you cannot pay, because the penalty is driven by filing, not payment.

Pay through your bank's online banking by adding the CRA as a payee and choosing the right account and year, through My Payment with a debit card, by pre-authorised debit scheduled in My Account, by credit card through a third-party provider that charges its own fee, or at a bank counter with a remittance voucher. For 2025 personal returns the payment deadline was 30 April 2026, including for the self-employed, and interest runs daily on anything unpaid after that.

Call the enquiry line for your situation, listed by topic on the CRA contact pages at canada.ca, then follow the automated menu to the option for speaking with an agent. Have your social insurance number or business number, your latest return and a recent notice of assessment ready, because the agent must verify you before discussing anything. Waits peak around the filing deadline and early calls connect faster. The CRA runs no walk-in tax counters.

There is no single income floor that triggers a return. Filing is required if you owe tax, if the CRA asks you to file, if you disposed of property, or if you have to repay a benefit. Filing with little or no income is usually still worth doing, because that return is how the GST/HST credit, the Canada child benefit and provincial benefits are calculated, and how RRSP room and unused credits get recorded for later years.

The CRA no longer runs walk-in counters for general tax help, so there is no office you can visit to file or ask questions. Contact is by phone, by mail, or through My Account and My Business Account; in-person help is limited to arranged appointments in specific programs. Mailing addresses differ by centre and by what you are sending, so use the address printed on your CRA letter or on the CRA's website.

For 2026 employees outside Quebec pay Employment Insurance premiums at 1.63% of insurable earnings, up to maximum insurable earnings of $68,900, giving a maximum employee premium of $1,123.07. Quebec employees pay a reduced 1.30%, capped at $895.70, because the province runs its own parental insurance plan. Employers pay 1.4 times the employee amount unless they qualify for a reduced rate. Premiums stop once the annual cap is reached.

The individual and business enquiry numbers, along with their hours, are listed on the CRA contact page. Have your social insurance number or business number and a figure from a recent return ready, because the agent must verify you before discussing anything. Many tasks never need a call: CRA My Account and My Business Account show balances, assessments, slips and instalments, and let you file a dispute, change a return or set up a payment arrangement.

No. Property tax is a municipal levy based on your property’s assessed value, not a charge for a service you consume, so it is not a utility bill even where a city bills water on the same statement. The difference matters when you claim expenses: for a rental or a home office, property tax and utilities are separate lines, each apportioned to the business-use share. Keep the municipal tax bill itself as your record.

Yes. Once eligibility is established the CRA pays the Canada child benefit retroactively, so a late application or a return filed years behind can produce a lump-sum catch-up, though retroactive periods reach back only so far and the oldest months need a written request for relief. Entitlement is recalculated each July from the prior year's returns, and both parents must file for payments to continue. The benefit itself is not taxable, but any overpayment is recovered from future payments.

Sign in to CRA My Account and open the tax year: a filed return shows as received or assessed, and the notice of assessment appears there once processing finishes. Filing software also keeps a confirmation number from the moment it transmitted the return. If nothing appears in My Account and no notice arrived by post, the return was most likely never filed, and it can still be filed now. The CRA's individual enquiries line can confirm what is on record.

No. The fuel charge applies to fuels, not tobacco. Cigarettes carry federal excise duty, a provincial or territorial tobacco tax, and GST or HST on the shelf price, which is why tax makes up most of what you pay. Duty and tobacco tax rates move with budgets and some federal rates are adjusted annually, so check the CRA excise duty rates page and your province's tobacco tax page rather than an older figure.
