Norfolk County: Our Analysis

Norfolk County is Ontario's garden: ginseng, berries, apples and vegetables on the Lake Erie sand plain, with some of the province's largest seasonal agricultural worker programs. Grower files manage SAWP payroll, housing benefits and T4 coding precisely; ginseng's multi-year crop cycle complicates inventory and income timing; and land succession uses the qualified farm property capital gains exemption. Sales stay largely zero-rated with full HST input tax credits.

Norfolk County: Notes From Our Practice

We file for Norfolk County businesses week in, week out, and the same handful of questions keeps arriving in our inbox. What follows are the working notes a tax filing specialist keeps for exactly those questions.

Ask a tax filing specialist where Norfolk County businesses stumble earliest, and the answer is registration and remittance. Ontario uses a single 13% HST administered by the CRA, so you file one combined return rather than separate federal and provincial ones. Getting the mechanics right at the outset is far cheaper than correcting them later.

For incorporated businesses the provincial layer matters at year-end. Ontario applies a 3.2% small business rate on the first $500,000 of active business income, giving a 12.2% combined federal-provincial rate. Most Norfolk County owners meet this rule for the first time at their first year-end with us.

Budgeting a new hire? Price in the province, not just the paycheque. Employer Health Tax (EHT) applies above a $1,000,000 annual payroll exemption for eligible employers. A tax filing specialist will fold this into your per-employee cost so the number you plan with is the real one. It is usually the first correction we make on a new Norfolk County file.

The provincial layer is not only obligations — it also carries programs like Ontario Innovation Tax Credit, Ontario Made Manufacturing Investment Tax Credit, Ontario Regional Opportunities Investment Tax Credit. We make no promises about which of them fit your situation; we do say that not looking is how money gets left behind. It is usually the first correction we make on a new Norfolk County file.

Sector shapes the return. With finance, professional services, manufacturing, technology and healthcare anchoring the Norfolk County economy, the files a tax consultant sees most often share the same pressure points — revenue recognition, expense categories, and sector-specific compliance questions.

Pricing that changes with your postal code has no place here, and ours doesn't: a single fixed fee across Canada, with the return in your hands for review before you pay. We build every Norfolk County engagement around that fact.

Norfolk County Tax & Accounting Case Studies

See how our expert Norfolk County tax and accounting services have helped Canadian businesses save money and stay compliant.

Case Study 1

$880,000 Sheltered By The Lifetime Capital Gains Exemption — Financial Planning Practice, Norfolk County

A financial planning practice in Norfolk County, Ontario was preparing to sell. However, a shareholder loan balance that would have been picked up as income on closing disqualified the shares. Purification sheltered $880,000 under the exemption.

A financial planning practice in Norfolk County, Ontario had an offer on the table and 16 months to close. The shares did not qualify for the capital gains exemption. A shareholder loan balance that would have been picked up as income on closing was part of the reason. We purified the corporation so the shares met the qualifying tests. We recalculated the corporate tax at the 12.2% combined small business rate and rebased the instalments on the current year. All of it was done well ahead of the closing date. The sale closed on schedule with $880,000 sheltered by the lifetime capital gains exemption across the shareholders.

Case Study 2

Collections Halted And $61,000 Cut From A 4-Year Backlog — Plastics Moulder, Norfolk County

Collections had begun against a plastics moulder in Norfolk County, Ontario over 4 years of unfiled returns. Bringing them current cut $61,000 from the balance.

By the time a plastics moulder in Norfolk County, Ontario called, 4 years were outstanding. The CRA had assessed on estimates. Underneath it sat out-of-province sales billed at the ON rate instead of the customer’s. We reconstructed the records year by year. We registered the provincial payroll account, caught up the outstanding remittances, and applied for relief on the penalty. Each filing replaced an arbitrary assessment with a real one. The account is current. Filing on real numbers rather than CRA estimates reduced the balance by $61,000, and a relief application addressed part of the accumulated interest.

Case Study 3

Reorganisation Completed Tax-Deferred, $45,000 Saved Each Year — Family Medicine Clinic, Norfolk County

A family medicine clinic in Norfolk County, Ontario had outgrown its structure. The visible cost was a provincial payroll levy that had never been registered for or remitted. The reorganisation completed tax-deferred and saves $45,000 a year.

A family medicine clinic in Norfolk County, Ontario had outgrown the structure it started with. A provincial payroll levy that had never been registered for or remitted was the immediate problem. The longer-term one was that the structure blocked the next step. We mapped the current structure and modelled the target. Then we assessed and claimed Ontario Innovation Tax Credit alongside the federal return. The tax-deferred elections were filed on time and the supporting valuations documented. The reorganisation completed without triggering tax, and the new structure saves approximately $45,000 a year while removing the exposure the old one carried.

Case Study 4

Desk-Review Assessment Of $130,000 Vacated — Boutique Law Firm, Norfolk County

A desk review assessed a boutique law firm in Norfolk County, Ontario $130,000. The dispute was over sector-specific exposure the previous accountant had not seen before. Producing the records vacated the assessment.

A boutique law firm in Norfolk County, Ontario was carrying $130,000 of penalties and interest. The charges arose from sector-specific exposure the previous accountant had not seen before. Much of that amount accumulated during a period the CRA itself had delayed. We assessed and claimed Ontario Made Manufacturing Investment Tax Credit alongside the federal return. We framed the relief application on the specific grounds the CRA guidelines recognise rather than on general hardship. The assessment was vacated. $130,000 came off the account, and the documentation now on file makes the same position straightforward to defend next time.

Case Study 5

9-Week Turnaround Beat The Deadline And Saved $124,000 — B2B SaaS Company, Norfolk County

A 9-week rebuild at a B2B SaaS company in Norfolk County, Ontario got the filing in with 20 days to spare. That avoided $124,000 in penalties.

A B2B SaaS company in Norfolk County, Ontario was weeks away from the deadline for its ON tax and accounting file. Behind that sat instalments still calculated on a year the business had long outgrown. The exposure if the date slipped was around $124,000. We rebuilt the sales ledger by customer location, applied the correct place-of-supply rate to each stream, and filed the adjusted HST returns. The filing went in complete rather than provisional, so there was no amended return to follow. Filed with 20 days to spare. $124,000 in late-filing penalties avoided, and the working papers are ready for the following year.

Case Study 6

Month-End Close Cut From 6 Weeks To 4 Days — Home-Care Nursing Agency, Norfolk County

Closing the books at a home-care nursing agency in Norfolk County, Ontario took 6 weeks. The cause was 13% HST charged on every sale regardless of where the customer was located. It now takes 4 days.

The accounting file at a home-care nursing agency in Norfolk County, Ontario had a weak foundation. It was built on 13% HST charged on every sale regardless of where the customer was located. The year-end had taken 6 weeks each of the last three years. We recalculated the corporate tax at the 12.2% combined small business rate and rebased the instalments on the current year. We also moved the reconciliations into the monthly cycle, so the year-end stopped being a rebuild. The file reconciles. Month-end closes in 4 days instead of 6 weeks, and the year-end is a review rather than a reconstruction.

Common Questions Before Starting Norfolk County Tax Filing Work

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does a tax accountant in Norfolk County cost?

Corporate tax filing starts at $90 and monthly bookkeeping at $10, the same fixed rates we charge nationally. Norfolk County businesses pay no location premium, and the quote is agreed before work starts. See the full pricing breakdown.

Do I need to meet my Norfolk County accountant in person?

No. Everything runs through a secure portal with e-signatures, so documents never travel by mail and nothing is lost in transit. Clients across Norfolk County complete an entire filing without a single in-person meeting, though calls are always available.

Which tax deadlines apply to Norfolk County businesses?

Corporate T2 returns are due six months after your fiscal year-end, with any balance owing payable within two or three months depending on your CCPC status. Personal T1 returns are due April 30, and June 15 for the self-employed. GST/HST depends on your filing frequency.

Can you handle both my corporate and personal returns?

Yes, and doing both together is where most of the planning value sits. Salary-versus-dividend mix, shareholder loans and RRSP room interact across the two returns, and treating them separately is how owners overpay. Explore all our services.

What if my books are behind by several years?

That is routine work for us. We rebuild the ledger year by year, file the outstanding returns in sequence, and where eligible apply to the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties and interest.

Are you taking on new clients in Norfolk County?

Yes, we are actively taking on new corporate and personal clients in Norfolk County, including mid-season transfers from another accountant. Transferring is straightforward and we request the prior files on your behalf.

What industries do you serve in Norfolk County?

Construction, healthcare and medical practices, restaurants, e-commerce, real estate, transportation, professional services, technology startups and registered non-profits. Each carries a distinct deduction profile. See our industry specialisms.

How do I switch to your firm from my current accountant?

Tell us who currently holds your files and we handle the professional handover, including requesting working papers and prior-year returns. There is no gap in your compliance and no awkward conversation required on your side.

What is the deadline for filing corporate taxes in Norfolk County?

In Norfolk County, corporate tax returns (T2) are due within six months of the corporation's fiscal year-end. If you owe tax, the balance must be paid within 2 or 3 months of the year-end.

How much do tax accountants in Norfolk County charge?

Our personal tax filing services in Norfolk County start from $25, and corporate tax returns start from $90, offered under our 100% Risk-Free price match guarantee.

Does your accounting firm handle CRA audits for clients in Norfolk County?

Yes! We provide direct CRA audit defense and representation services for businesses and individuals throughout Ontario and across Canada.

Do you have an office in Norfolk County?

We do not have a storefront in Norfolk County. Documents are exchanged on secure cloud software and everything is signed electronically, and the fee is the same in Norfolk County as anywhere else in Canada, with no location premium. Our head office is at 381 Front St W, Toronto, and you can reach the team on +1-416-619-0068.

What do Norfolk County businesses need to know about sales tax?

Ontario uses a single 13% HST administered by the CRA, so you file one combined return rather than separate federal and provincial ones. Most Norfolk County owners meet this rule for the first time at their first year-end with us.

What does Ontario’s corporate rate structure mean for a Norfolk County company?

Ontario applies a 3.2% small business rate on the first $500,000 of active business income, giving a 12.2% combined federal-provincial rate. That single point drives more Norfolk County conversations than any other.

Still have questions? View our FAQ page or contact us.

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

No. Ontario folded its former retail sales tax into the harmonised sales tax, so a single HST replaces the old GST plus PST pair on most sales, and registered businesses charge it, remit it and claim input tax credits on their own purchases. A narrow provincial retail sales tax still applies in a few places, notably certain insurance premiums and benefit plans and private vehicle sales between individuals. Those are administered by Ontario rather than the CRA.

The Ontario HST rate is 13% for 2026, and it has been 13% since 1 July 2010. That single rate carries a 5% federal component and an 8% Ontario component, and the CRA collects and administers all of it. Place-of-supply rules decide which province's rate applies, so goods delivered in Ontario take 13% and a delivery into Nova Scotia takes 14%. Basic groceries are zero-rated at 0%, while exempt supplies such as most long-term residential rent carry no HST and no input tax recovery.

Call the individual or business enquiries line published on the CRA contact page at canada.ca. Have your social insurance number or business number, your date of birth and a figure from a recent return ready, because the agent verifies your identity before discussing anything. Lines are busiest just after filing season opens and near deadlines, so early morning usually connects faster. You can also send a secure message from My Account, or authorise a representative to call on your behalf.

No single legal definition exists. The CRA does not publish a low-income line; instead each benefit and credit has its own income test, and payments such as the GST/HST credit, the Canada workers benefit and the Ontario Trillium Benefit phase out as family net income rises. Statistics Canada's low-income measures vary by household size and community. File a return even on very little income, because those benefits are calculated from the return.

The business number is the single identifier the CRA uses for your business, with a separate programme account opened under it for each obligation: GST/HST, payroll deductions, corporate income tax, import and export. Register through Business Registration Online, by phone or by mail, or receive one automatically when you incorporate federally. You need it before you can remit payroll or file GST/HST. Provincial registration is separate in some provinces, notably Quebec, where Revenu Québec administers its own accounts.

If you are incorporated, you can take salary, dividends, or a mix of both. Salary is deductible to the corporation, builds RRSP room and CPP entitlement, and requires payroll registration and regular remittances. Dividends need no payroll but come out of after-tax corporate income and create no RRSP room. Sole proprietors and partners simply draw money and pay tax on the business profit. The right mix depends on your cash needs and the corporation's tax position, so model both.

In your bank's bill payment screen, search the payee list for the Canada Revenue Agency and pick the entry that matches the debt: personal income tax owing, personal instalments, GST/HST, corporation tax, or payroll source deductions. The account number is your social insurance number for personal tax, or your business number with the correct program identifier for a business account. Paying the wrong payee parks the money in the wrong account while interest runs, so ask the CRA to transfer it.

Usually yes. Severance, retiring allowances, bonuses, back pay, commuted pensions and RRSP withdrawals are taxable in the year received, and the payer withholds at a flat lump-sum rate that may be higher or lower than your real marginal rate, so a refund or balance can appear at filing. A qualifying retroactive lump sum covering earlier years can be spread back over them on request. Amounts transferred directly to an RRSP defer the tax.

Get a social insurance number, then gather every slip, including T4, T4A, T5, tuition and rent receipts, and file a T1 return for the year. Tax software approved by the CRA for electronic filing can send it, and a first-time filer can usually file online, though the CRA sometimes requires a paper return until it has a record of you. For the 2025 year the deadline was 30 April 2026, or 15 June for self-employment with payment still due 30 April.

Federal tax for 2026 starts at 14% on the lowest bracket and rises through 20.5%, 26% and 29% to 33% on the highest, and your province adds its own bracketed rate on top. Only the income above each threshold is taxed at that higher rate. The federal basic personal amount of $16,452 for 2026 shelters the first slice, tapering for high earners. Sales tax, CPP and EI are charged separately.

There is no legal way to opt out of property tax on a taxable property; it funds municipal services and is owed by the registered owner. Relief is what actually exists. Seniors and low-income or disabled owners can defer payment or claim rebates in several provinces, farm and managed forest land can be taxed in a lower class, and a successful assessment appeal reduces the bill. Programmes differ, so apply through your municipality or province.

Yes. For an unpaid tax debt the CRA can issue a requirement to pay straight to your employer, bank or a client who owes you money, without a court order, and the recipient must send part of what they owe you to the CRA until the debt clears. The CRA is expected to try to reach you first. Once it is issued, the way out is to pay the balance, file any outstanding returns, or negotiate a payment arrangement.
