Internal Audit Support: Our Analysis

CRA reviews are won on documentation: every figure filed should trace to a source document, and deadlines — 90 days for an objection — are unforgiving. A review engagement under CSRE 2400 delivers limited assurance at a fraction of audit cost — often exactly what a bank covenant requires. Our internal audit support engagement is priced as a pocket-friendly flat fee, so the cost is known before the work starts.

Reading Between the Lines on Internal Audit Support

No two internal audit support files are identical, but the rules that govern them are stable. An accounting firm who works with Internal Audit Support weekly keeps returning to the same anchors, and they are set out below.

Before anything else, one rule sets the frame. Comparative figures matter: a restated prior year needs disclosure of the restatement, and lenders read the comparatives as closely as the current year.

The detail that surprises most owners comes next. Bonding companies and lenders typically want statements within 90 to 120 days of year-end. Late statements cost capacity even when the numbers are good. A file is only as strong as what backs it up, which brings us to the next rule: Only an audit gives an opinion on whether the statements are free of material misstatement. A review provides limited assurance and a compilation provides none, and which one is needed is set by the user of the statements, not by whoever prepares them.

None of this requires you to become an expert — that is what engaging an accountant is for. What it does require is recognizing that internal audit support will reward preparation over improvisation. Gather whatever records touch the numbers — statements, ledgers, prior-year filings — and we take it from there.

We keep the commercial side simple. The fee is fixed and agreed in advance, the file is reviewed with you before filing, and you pay after the service — in that order, every time.

Internal Audit Support: Straight Answers to Common Questions

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does Internal Audit Support cost in Canada?

Internal Audit Support starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for Internal Audit Support?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does Internal Audit Support take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We are a cloud-based practice serving every province and territory, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for Internal Audit Support?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes Internal Audit Support different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in Internal Audit Support services?

Our internal audit support services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with Internal Audit Support services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

How is your approach to internal audit support different from doing it through software?

It depends less on opinion than owners assume. Under CSRS 4200 the practitioner has to consider whether the compiled information is misleading and cannot issue it where it is. An unusual revenue or inventory policy has to be described plainly in the basis-of-accounting note rather than left for the reader to infer. Once you know that, the practical question becomes timing and documentation — both of which we handle inside the engagement.

What records should I gather before starting internal audit support?

Here is what the rules actually say, stripped of the folklore: A CCPC files its T2 within six months of year-end, with the balance due two months after (three where the small business deduction is claimed). The 9% federal small business rate applies to the first $500,000 of active business income. The filing and payment deadlines differ, and interest runs from the payment date. Filing on time while paying late still costs money. Our role as your accountant is to apply that cleanly to your situation rather than to a hypothetical one.

Searched Questions About Internal Audit Support

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

For 2025 returns filed in 2026, most online returns are processed in about two weeks, and a non-resident return can take up to sixteen weeks. A paper return runs on a considerably longer standard because it is handled manually. Those timeframes assume a complete return that is not pulled for review. Register direct deposit and track progress in CRA My Account rather than waiting on a posted cheque.

As the rules stand for the 2025 tax year filed in 2026, the late-filing penalty is 5% of the balance owing plus 1% of that balance for each full month the return is late, to a maximum of 12 months, so 17% at worst. It rises to 10% plus 2% per month for up to 20 months, a 50% maximum, but only where the CRA formally demanded the return and had already charged a late-filing penalty for any of the three preceding tax years. Interest compounds daily.

Canada taxes income in graduated brackets, so only the income above a threshold is taxed at that bracket's higher rate and moving up a bracket never reprices the income below it. There is one federal set of brackets and a separate set for each province and territory, and the thresholds are indexed to inflation every year. Look up the current figures for your province on the CRA rate tables rather than relying on an older list.

A non-refundable credit reduces the tax you owe to zero but no further, so any unused part is lost, carried forward, or transferred to a spouse or parent where the rule allows it. A refundable credit is paid to you even when no tax is owed, which is how benefit-style payments reach people with little or no income. Most personal credits on the federal return, including the basic personal amount, are non-refundable.

Because several layers stack on the same income. Federal tax and provincial tax both apply to your taxable income at progressive rates, CPP or QPP and EI come off on top, and GST/HST and provincial sales or fuel taxes apply again when you spend. A bonus, a second job or a lump-sum withdrawal often looks punishing because withholding is calculated as if that payment were your only income. Property tax is separate, set by municipalities on assessed value.

The CRA does call, usually about an unfiled return, a balance owing, a payment arrangement, a benefit review or an audit. A real agent gives a name and office and can point to correspondence already in My Account, and will never demand payment by e-transfer, gift card or cryptocurrency, threaten arrest, or ask for a password. If a call feels wrong, hang up, check My Account, then call the CRA back on a number from its own website.

A laptop is fully taxable at the sales tax rate for the place it is delivered. That means 5% GST in Alberta and the territories, 13% HST in Ontario, 14% in Nova Scotia from 1 April 2025, and 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island. On top of GST, British Columbia adds 7% PST, Saskatchewan 6%, Manitoba 7% RST and Quebec 9.975% QST. Registered businesses can generally recover the GST or HST paid.

Taxable value is the amount a tax is actually calculated on, after the exemptions and adjustments that apply to that particular tax. For property tax it is the assessed value your assessment authority sets. For sales tax it is the price charged for the supply, though Quebec applies QST of 9.975% to the pre-GST price. For income tax the equivalent is taxable income. Where a value has to be estimated, the usual standard is fair market value on the relevant date.

Personal and living costs never are: your own groceries, everyday clothing, commuting between home and a regular workplace, and home costs without a qualifying work space. In a business, capital purchases are written off over time through capital cost allowance rather than expensed, club dues and most memberships are denied, only a portion of meals and entertainment is allowed, and fines, penalties and interest charged by the CRA are not deductible. Political contributions and donations give credits, not expense deductions.

Usually yes, but read it with the date beside it. The balance shown in CRA My Account is what that account owes as of that date, including interest charged to that point. It moves afterwards: interest compounds daily on an unpaid balance, and a payment, a reassessment or a credit transferred from another account changes the figure. Instalment, payroll and GST/HST accounts are shown separately, so confirm you are looking at the right one.

Life insurance premiums are generally not deductible, whether you pay them personally or through your corporation. The main exception is where a lender requires a policy as collateral on money borrowed to earn business income, in which case part of the premium may be deductible. Group life coverage an employer provides for staff is usually deductible to the business but becomes a taxable benefit to the employee. Confirm the treatment before claiming anything.

Add up every taxable source for the year: CPP, Old Age Security, pension payments, the RRIF minimum plus any extra withdrawal, and investment income held outside registered plans. Apply that year's federal and provincial brackets to the total, then subtract credits such as the basic personal, age and pension amounts. Adjust for pension splitting with a spouse and for Old Age Security recovery if income is high. Tax already withheld on your slips is credited against the result.
