A Short Glossary for QuickBooks Setup and Support Clients

T1 General
The personal income tax return individuals file with the CRA each year.
T2 Corporate Return
The corporate income tax return every incorporated Canadian business must file.
GST/HST Return
The sales-tax return businesses file to remit GST/HST collected, net of input tax credits.
QuickBooks Setup and Support: Our Analysis

Monthly reconciliation is what keeps input tax credits claimable — unmatched receipts are the first thing disallowed in a GST/HST review. Because the fee is fixed and cheap, the economics stay predictable whether your file is simple or messy.

Practitioner Notes on QuickBooks Setup and Support

Clients often arrive treating quickbooks setup and support as a form-filling exercise. In practice, a tax preparation specialist spends more time on judgment calls than on data entry — and those calls are what these notes cover.

One rule does more work than the rest combined, so it goes first. A small corporation still carries the full compliance set: T2, GST/HST, payroll, and the annual return with the incorporating jurisdiction. The annual corporate return is separate from the T2 and is the one most often forgotten, which can lead to administrative dissolution.

The next point is the one a tax preparation specialist checks before quoting any timeline: Inventory is valued at the lower of cost and net realisable value, applied consistently. Changing method without CRA consent reopens prior years. Obsolete stock carried at cost overstates income, and the write-down is usually taken years after it was justified. Where clients most often get hurt is not the calculation but the follow-through, and the rule reads plainly. An expense is deductible where it was incurred to earn income and is reasonable in the circumstances. The business-use portion must be supported, which for vehicles means a logbook. The CRA rarely argues that an expense category is wrong; it argues that the proportion claimed was never substantiated.

What this means for you depends entirely on facts we have not seen yet — which is the honest answer, and the reason a tax preparation specialist starts every quickbooks setup and support engagement with questions rather than conclusions. Think of this list as the raw material a tax preparation specialist works from on quickbooks setup and support.

No surprises is the operating principle: the fee is agreed and fixed before we start, you review everything before it is filed, and payment comes after the work, not before.

Before You Call: QuickBooks Setup and Support FAQs

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does QuickBooks Setup and Support cost in Canada?

QuickBooks Setup and Support starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for QuickBooks Setup and Support?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does QuickBooks Setup and Support take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We are a cloud-based practice serving every province and territory, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for QuickBooks Setup and Support?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes QuickBooks Setup and Support different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in QuickBooks Setup and Support services?

Our quickbooks setup and support services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with QuickBooks Setup and Support services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

How do you price quickbooks setup and support for a small business?

We get this one a lot, and the answer is more concrete than people expect. Bank feeds are not a bookkeeping system. Auto-categorised transactions still need reconciliation to statements, because a duplicated feed entry is indistinguishable from a real expense on the face of the ledger. Bring your documents and we will show you where it lands in your numbers.

What goes wrong most often when owners handle quickbooks setup and support themselves?

Cash-basis records are not acceptable for a corporation. Income must be reported on the accrual basis, with receivables and payables recognised when they arise rather than when the money moves. That is the part most owners have not heard before they sit down with us, and it usually changes what they do next.

People Also Ask About QuickBooks Setup and Support

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

Canadian income tax is built up in layers. You total your income for the year, subtract the deductions you qualify for to arrive at taxable income, then apply the federal brackets and your province's brackets to that figure. Each bracket rate applies only to the income sitting inside it, so earning more never retaxes the dollars below. Non-refundable credits, starting with the basic personal amount, come off the tax afterwards. Look up the CRA bracket table for the tax year you are filing.

For the 2026 tax year, federal rates are 14% on the first $58,523 of taxable income, 20.5% from there to $117,045, 26% to $181,440, 29% to $258,482, and 33% above that. Each rate applies only to the income inside its own band, so moving into a higher bracket does not raise the tax on the income below it. Provincial or territorial tax is added on top.

Multiply the pre-tax price by the rate for the province of supply. On a $100 purchase in 2026 that is $13.00 in Ontario (13%), $14.00 in Nova Scotia (14%), and $15.00 in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador or Prince Edward Island (15%). In the non-participating provinces and the three territories only the 5% GST applies, so $5.00, plus any provincial sales tax billed separately.

A write-off is simply a deductible expense. You subtract it from the income it helped earn, so the saving equals the expense multiplied by your marginal tax rate, not the full amount spent. To qualify, the cost must be incurred to earn business or employment income, be reasonable in amount, and be backed by a receipt. Purely personal costs never qualify, and mixed-use items such as a vehicle or a home office are split by business-use proportion.

No. The federal adoption expense credit is non-refundable, so it reduces tax you owe and cannot by itself create a refund. If your tax payable is already nil, the credit produces nothing. Eligible expenses are claimed in the tax year the adoption is finalised, and two adoptive parents can split one claim up to the annual maximum. Some provinces offer a separate credit of their own. The CRA's adoption expenses page lists what qualifies and the current limit.

HST in Newfoundland and Labrador is 15% in 2026: the 5% federal GST plus a 10% provincial component. It increased from 13% to 15% on 1 July 2016 and has stayed there. Sellers charge it on most goods and services supplied into the province, including businesses based outside it. Basic groceries are zero-rated and long-term residential rent is exempt, so neither carries the 15%.

If you are registered for GST/HST, record expenses net of the tax and claim the tax portion as an input tax credit on your GST/HST return. Deducting it as an expense as well would claim the same amount twice. If you are not registered, the tax you paid is simply part of the cost and is deducted with it. Keep supplier invoices showing the tax and the supplier's registration number, because the CRA can ask for them.

Yes. Wine, beer and spirits are taxable, so GST/HST applies at the rate for the province, 13% in Ontario. Alcohol also carries federal excise duty and, in most provinces, a provincial markup or liquor levy, which are built into the shelf price before sales tax is calculated. In Quebec, QST at 9.975% applies on the pre-GST price alongside a specific alcohol levy. Restaurant and bar alcohol is taxable the same way.

Telecommunications services are taxable, so the bill carries 5% GST plus whatever provincial tax applies where the service is supplied: 7% PST in British Columbia, 6% in Saskatchewan, or the provincial part folded into HST at 13% in Ontario and 14% in Nova Scotia since 1 April 2025. Alberta and the territories see only the 5% GST. A business can recover the GST or HST portion as an input tax credit; PST is not recoverable.

The TFSA dollar limit is $7,000 for 2026, and it was also $7,000 for 2025 and 2024. The limit is indexed to inflation and rounded to the nearest $500, so it can rise in later years. You need to be 18 or older with a valid social insurance number, and room accumulates for each year from the year you turn 18 in which you are resident in Canada, whether or not you file a return or open an account — years in which you were not a resident of Canada add no room.

Unpaid property tax is not normally reported to Canadian credit bureaus, so paying it late does not usually show up in your score on its own. The risk is different: a municipality can add interest, register the arrears against title and eventually start a tax sale, and if you borrow to clear the bill that loan does affect your credit. Check your municipality's tax collection page for its arrears process.

Double taxation is lawful, and relief comes through credits and treaties rather than exemption. A Canadian resident taxed abroad on foreign income normally claims a foreign tax credit, while Canada's tax treaties cap withholding and decide which country taxes first. Inside Canada, corporate profits paid out as dividends carry a gross-up and dividend tax credit so the combined burden approximates a single level of tax. US LLCs are a common trap, since Canada usually treats one as a corporation.
